A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. aḷvu (p. 33) s. Measure, degree, proportion, quantity, magnitude, size, capacity, bound, limit, compass, number, standard, வரையறை. 2. The proper or required measure, the complement number, size, weight, &c., மட்டு. 3. With உம், it expresses a limited extent of measure, time, distance, &c., as அவ்வளவும், only so far, even so much. 4. Suffixed to participles, it means when, as soon as--as பார்க்குமளவில், as soon as seen. 5. A measure or thing to measure with, அளவுகருவி. There are four kinds of measurement; viz.: 1. எண்ணல், computation. 2. எடுத் தல், weight, measurement by balance. 3. முகத்தல், measurement of capacity--as dry of fluid measure. 4. நீட்டல், measurement of extension, a long measure and land measure.--Some add a fifth தெறித்தல், jerking with finger. இராசா அளவிற்கேறிற்று. It has gone up to (the limit of) the king; i. e. it is too late now to adopt measures to prevent it. காரியத்தளவிலேயொன்றுமில்லை. There is no importance in the thing--it matters not. குலத்தளவேயாகுங்குணம். According to the caste will be the disposition. அவன்வருமளவும். Till he comes. மேகமண்டலமளவும். As high as, or as far as the region of the clouds. என்னளவிலேயிப்படிநடந்தது. It has so happened to me; at least in my case, &c. தன்னளவிலே கொண்டாடிக்கொண்டான். He limited the feast to his own circle. அளவடி, s. A line containing four metrical feet, நாற்சீரால்வருமடி. அளவடிவிருத்தம், s. A விருத்தம் verse of four lines, each of which contains four feet, நேரடிவிருத்தம். அளவழித்தாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். அளவறுக்க, inf. To find out, ascertain a number and decide, வரையறுக்க. அளவற்றது--அளவில்லாதது. appel. n. That which is beyond number, measure, weight, &c. அளவாக, inf. [used adverbially.] Moderately, to a limited extent, according to. அளவிட, inf. To estimate, calculate. 2. To guess, conjecture. 3. To measure, explore, fathom. 4. Estimation, calculation, guess, மதிப்பிடுகை. 3. s. Weight, நிறை. 4. Capacity, extent of one's power. நிருவாகம். சத்துருவையளவிடைபார். Estimate an enemy's power. அளவியற்றாண்டகம், s. A kind of poem. அளவிறக்க, inf. To exceed the measure, the appointed limit, &c., எல் லைகடக்க. 2. To transgress, violate a rule, மீற. 3. To exceed all bounds, be immeasurable, inconceivable, எண்ணிறக்க. அளவிறந்தபொருள், s. Immense property beyond the power of calculation, a thing incomprehensible, a mystery. அளவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Immeasurableness, countlessness, immensity. அளவுகோல், s. A land measurer's rod. அளவுநாழி, s. A stamped measure. அளவுபடுத்த, inf. To measure, ascertain, to limit. அளவெடுக்க, inf. To take a measure, dimensions, &c., of a thing. அவ்வளவு--இவ்வளவு, s. So much, so many. அவ்வளவும், Even so much, only of far, that is all. எவ்வளவு, s. How much, how many. நேற்றளவு. Up to or till yesterday, in the course of yesterday. நேற்றையளவிலேசெய்தியிப்படி. The news were so up to yesterday. இன்றளவும். Until this day, in the course of to-day. 14)

iṇai (p. 45) s. Union, conjunction, communion, fellowship, இசைவு. 2. Comparison, parallel, similitude, resemblance, ஒப்பு. 3. (p.) Two things of a kind, a pair, couple, brace, துணை. 4. A companion, associate, partner, escort, protector, துணைவன். 5. Desire, இச்சை. 6. Women's hair, கூந்தல். இணையினெஞ்சமே. O! mind, debased beyond comparison. (வைராக்.) இறைகழலிணைமேவியவிமலர். Holy men who unite themselves to the feet of the Supreme Being. இணைக்கயல், s. A couple of carpfish, figures of which in gold, silver, &c., form one of the eight auspicious articles placed on special occasions as good omens, also as pleasing to the gods, அட் டமங்கலத்தொன்று. 2. One of the emblems of royalty, அரசசின்னத்தொன்று. இணைக்கல்லை, s. Two leaf-plates --as set before a religious mendicant or pandarum, while feeding him. இணைக்குப்போக, inf. [prop. இணை யாகப்போக.] To walk with another, to walk abreast. இணைக்குறளாசிரியப்பா, s. A kind of ஆசிரியப்பா, some of whose middle lines are shorter than the first or last line. இணைமணிமாலை, s. A poem consisting either of the kind of verses called வெண்பா and அகவல், or வெண்பா and கலித்துறை, in hundred verses and composed in accordance with the rule of அந்தாதி--one of the பிரபந்தம். இணைமுரண்டொடை, s. [in poetry.] A kind of ryhme where the first two feet in a line are opposed to each other either in word or meaning, ஓர்தொடை-as சீறடிப்பேரகலல்குல். இணைமோனைத்தொடை, s. A species of rhyme in which the first letters of each of the first two feet are the same. See தொடை. இணையசை, s. A compound metrical syllable, நிரையசை. இணையடி or கழலிணை, s. The two feet. இணையடிசூட, inf. To adorn, crown one's self with the feet (of the deity or guru) regarding them as flowers.--Note. To place the feet of another on one's head, is a figurative form for expressing great reverence, devotedness, respect, &c. இணையளபெடைத்தொடை, s. A verse in which the first letter of the first two feet is protracted. இணையிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To compare one thing with another. இணையியைபுத்தொடை, s. The repetition of the same letter in the last two feet of any line. See தொடை. இணையெதுகைத்தொடை, s. [in poetry.] The rhyming of the second letters of the first two feet in each line. இணையெழுத்து, s. ēntu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏந்தினேன், வேன், ஏந்த, v. a. To sustain, support, hold up, to carry in the hand--as a weapon, &c., to endure, to sustain a character, reputation, &c.; to support--as a beam, pillars, &c., தாங்க. 2. To raise or spread out hands --as a beggar; to raise a thing with the hands spread, கையேந்த. 3. To catch or receive in the hands or arms, to receive as flowing water, rain, &c., with the hands or with a vessel in the hands, பாத்திரமுதலி யவற்றையேந்த. 4. The harmony of sounds peculiar to வெண்பா verses composed of வெண்சீர் வெண்டளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசைத்துள்ளல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to கலி verses of கலித் தளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசைத்தூங்கல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to வஞ்சி verses of ஒன்றியவஞ்சித்தளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திசையகவல், s. The harmony of sounds peculiar to அகவல் verses of நேர்நேரியற்றளை; also, a verse of that harmony. ஏந்திழையார், s. Women, the adorned, பெண்கள். (p.) ஏந்துகொம்பு, s. The tusks of an elephant, curved upward and terminating horizontally, யானைக்கொம்பு. 2. A curved palankeen pole, or pole for carrying a load, தாங்குகொம்பு. ஏந்தெழில், s. A poem in which the same words are repeated for the purposes of clearness and strength, ஓர்சந்தம். ஏந்தானம், s. [prop. ஏந்துதானம்.] A hanging shelf, a rack, grate, shelf to set things on, தூக்கங்கள். 2. The hands, or arms extended forward or locked with another's, to carry a child, a thing, &c., கையிலேந்துகை. ஏந்தானத்திலேகொண்டுபோகிறது. To carry on the hands so extended. ஏந்தி, s. A bearer, supporter, one invested with, கையேந்துபவன்--used in combination only. 23)

kruviḷm (p. 96) s. A winding creeper, காக்கணங்கொடி. 2. [in poetry.] A technical word applied to a foot consisting of two நிரை, கருவிளங்கனி. (See சீர்.) 3. A technical term in poetry applied to a foot that contains three நிரையசை. கருவிளங்காய், s. [in poetry.] A technical word applied to a foot consisting of two நிரையசை, and one நேரசை. கருவிளநறுநிழல், s. [in poetry.] A word applied to a foot of four நிரையசை. கருவிளநறும்பூ, s. A term applied to a metrical foot of four syllables, the last being நேரசை. கருவிளந்தண்ணிழல், s. A term applied to a metrical foot for four அசை, the third அசை being நேர். கருவிளந்தண்பூ, s. A term applied in poetry to a foot of four அசை; the two first being நிரை, and the others நேர். 167)

kli (p. 96) s. Noise, clamor, sound, ஒலி. 2. The கலிப்பா. species of verse and its varieties. (See பா.) 3. Sea, ocean, கடல். 4. Battle, war, போர். 5. Deceit, fraud, வஞ்சகம். 6. Strength, force, வலி. (p.) 7. Misery, misfortune, disaster, calamity-also misery, personified as a deity, சிறுமை. 8. The fourth age of the world or that of vice, misery, deterioration, &c. See கலியுகம். கலிக்குப்புதுமையானகாரியமாயிருக்கிறது. It is a strange thing in this age. கலிகாலம், s. A time of misery, bad times--as resulting from the present age, கொடுமையானகாலம். கலிதீர்த்தான். He who put an end to misery. கலித்தளை, s. Mode of connexion of metrical feet in கலிப்பா. See தளை. கலித்தாழிசை, s. A class of verse, கலிப்பாவினத்திலொன்று. கலித்துருமம், s. The தான்றிமரம்-A tree yielding a nut much used in medicines, it is said in நைடதம் that Kali, the god of the iron age, once concealed himself in the fruit of this tree, Terminalia bellerica. (p.) கலித்துறை, s. A class of verse including several species, கலிப்பாவினத்தி லொன்று. கட்டளைக்கலித்துறை, s. A class of கலித்துறை verse. கலிப்பா, s. A verse of which there are ten kinds, viz.: 1. நேரிசை ஒத்தாழிசைக் கலிப்பா. 2. அம்போதரங்க ஒத்தாழிசைக்கலிப்பா. 3. தரவு கொச்சக்கலிப்பா. 4. தரவிணைக்கொச்சக் கலிப்பா. 5. சிஃறாழிசைக்கொச்சக்கலிப்பா. 6. பஃறாழிசைகொச்சக்கலிப்பா. 7.மயங்கிசைக்கொ ச்சக்கலிப்பா. 8. ஒருபோகு கொச்சக்கலிப்பா. 9. வண்ணக ஒத்தாழிசைக்கலிப்பா. 1. வெண் கலிப்பா. கட்டளைக்கலிப்பா, s. A species of கலிப்பா verse. கலியர், s. Soldiers, warriors, combatants, படைவீரர். 2. The poor, destitute, தரித்திரர். (p.) கலியாத்தம்--கலியாப்தம், s. Any year of the கலிவருஷம். கலியுகம்-கடையுகம்-நாலாம்யுகம், s. The present iron age being the last of the four Yugas or great ages of the world. Wils. p. 22. KALIUGA.--Note. Its commencement is placed about three-hundred years anterior to the Christian era. Its years are four hundred and thirty-two thousand, at the expiration of which the golden age returns. கலிவிருத்தம், s. A class of verse, கலிப்பாவினத்திலொன்று. கலிவெண்பா, s. A kind of வெண் பா. 239)

kāy (p. 104) s. Unripe fruits, fruits, that do not grow mellow by ripening--as grains, nuts, &c., கனிக்காய். 2. (c.) A callous tumour, an excrescence, a wart, a corn, a cicatrice from a wound, காய்ப்பு. 3. An unripe boil, &c., காய்ப்பரு. 4. A piece at chess, a die, சொக்கட்டான்காய். கட்டியின்னங்காயாயிருக்கிறது. The tumour is not yet ripe. காயவியல், s. A curry carelessly prepared with unripe fruits. காய்கறி, s. Fruits, vegetables and the like for preparing curry. காய்காய்க்க, inf. To form as a fruit; to produce fruit, to bear fruit. காய்காய்க்கிறமரம், s. A tree that bears fruit, not a barren tree. காய்க்கடுக்கன், s. [prov.] An ear-ring with a sacred seed fastened in it, for a bead, from which, if water fall on the body, in bathing, &c., it is deemed very meritorious, உருத்திராட்டக்கடுக்கன். காய்க்குலை, s. A bunch of unripe fruits. காய்ச்சீர், s. [in prosody.] Any of the four metrical feet ending in காய்காய்; also, a metrical foot equivalent in measure to a foot in காய். See சீர். காய்த்தானியம், s. The nine kinds of grains, called முதிரை, நவதானியம். 2. A shrub, கம்பளிகொண்டான், Morus Indica. காய்பறிக்க, inf. To pluck unripe fruits. காய்மடி, s. The thick, hard udder of a cow unfit for milk. காய்மடை, s. [prov.] An offering of fruits, commonly to a ferocious deity, கனிவர்க்கநிவேதனம். காய்ம்பனை, s. [prov.] A fruit-bearing palmyra tree, as distinguished from young trees and males, காய்க்கும்பனை. காய்வள்ளி, s. See வள்ளி. காய்வெட்டிக்கள், s. [prov]. Toddy from a Palmyra tree, the young fruits of which are cut off that the juice may flow from the stalk, காயைவெட்டி இறக்குங்கள். கருக்காய், s. Grain almost ripe. கருங்காய், s. Dark betel-nuts, not yet turned red. செங்காய், s. Fruits or grain turning yellow when ripening. பசுங்காய்--இளங்காய், s. Fruits just formed, tender grain. 2. immature fruit or grain. 90)

kuṟḷ (p. 132) s. Shortness, conciseness, abridgment, சிறுமை. 2. An imp or goblin, பூதம். (நிக.) 3. A metrical line of two feet. இருசீரடி. 4. A distish, or couplet of short lines, the first of four, and the second of three feet of இயற்சீர் and வெண்சீர், குறள்வெண்பா. 5. A celebrated poetical work by திருவள்ளுவர், in three parts; viz.: அறத்துப்பால், பொருட்பால், காமத்துப்பால். 6. Shortness in stature, dwarfishness குள்ளம்; [ex குறு.] குறளடி, s. A line consisting of two metrical feet. குறளடிவஞ்சிப்பா, s. A kind of வஞ்சி verse, consisting of three or more lines of two metrical feet each, together with a detached foot and an அகவற்சுரித கம். குறள்வெண்பா--குறட்பா, s. A distich of two metrical lines. See குறள். குறள்வெண்செந்துறை, s. A verse consisting of two equal metrical lones of four or more feet each. குறட்டரழிசை--குறளினத்தாழிசை, s. A verse of two unequal metrical lines of five or more feet each. குறளன், s. A short person, a dwarf. குறளி, s. A dwarfish woman. 2. A short, wicked shrew. 3. A kind of devil. 4. (Rott.) A prostitute. குறளிவித்தை, s. Magical tricks, legerdemain, juggling. 16)

kuẕippu (p. 129) s. (See under the verb, குழி.) A peculiar harmonic rhythm in verse, in which the மோனை rhyming of the metrical feet are discarded, but the correspondence of the letters, or syllables, ending each foot and beginning the next forms a pleasing hormony--as in the following: அணியுடன்றபரி, பரியுடன்றகரி, கரியுடன்றகொடி, யணியுதேர்--மணியுடன்றதனு, தனுவுடன்றகணை, கணை யுடன்றகரை, மலிதாப் பிணியுடன்றவம, ரமருடன்றவு ட, லுடலுடன்றவுயிர், பிரிதாப்--பணியுடன்றகுய, வுய ருடன்றபடை, படையுடன்றமறை, யாசனால். The horses chafed on their bits--The elephants were rendered impetuous by the horses--The cars, decked with flags, were violently propelled by the elephants--The bows tinkled with their bells--The arrows were shot forth from the bows--The blood gushed from the arrows' wounds--The battle fiercely raged--The bodies were sore smitten in the battle--The souls separated and fled from the bodies. Thus the pious chief (Joshua), high raised on his jewel-decked chariot, vanquished the opposing hosts. Here, the feet are not regarded, but குழிப்பு forms the harmony. The variety used is தனதனந்ததன--தனதனந்ததன--தனதனந்த தன--தனதனா. (Besch. Shen. Tam. Gram.) 2)

kūviḷm (p. 136) s. The வில்வம் flower tree. 2. [in prosody] A term for a certain metrical foot. See சீர். கூவிளம்பத்திரி, s. The leaf of the கூவி ளம் tree. 4)

cangkalitam (p. 155) s. Blending, intermixture, கலப்பு. 2. [in arith.] Addition, aggregation; also summation, எண்கூட்டுகை. W. p. 88. SANKALITA. (சது.) 3. One of the treatises on jurisprudence and ethics, தருமநூலி லொன்று. 4. [in arith.] Progression; series of numbers, or quantities increasing or decreasing according to some mathematical law, also their sum, எண்களின்தொடர். The principal series are--1st. நற்சங்கலிதம். The series of numbers in their natural order--as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, &c., an arithmetical series, 2d. வர்க்கசங்கலிதம். The series of the squares of the successive numbers in நற்சங்கலிதம்--as 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, &c., 3d. கனசங்கலிதம். The series of the cubes of the successive numbers in நற்சங்கலிதம்--as 1, 8, 27, 64, 125, &c., 4th. வி யன்சங்கலிதம். The series of odd numbers-as 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, &c. 5th. சமன்சங்கலிதம். The series of even numbers--as 2, 4, 6, 8, 1, &c. 6th. வியன்சமன்சங்கலிதம். The series of odd numbers in an even number of terms --as 1 2 3 4/1,3,5,7 &c. 7th. வியன் வியன் சங்கலிதம். The series of odd number of terms--as 1,2,3,4,5/1,3,5,7,9 &c. 8th. சமன்வியன்சங்கலிதம். The series of even number in an odd number of terms--as 1,2,3,4,5/2,4,6,8,1, 9th. சமன் சமன்சங்கலி தம். The series of even number in an even number of terms--as 1,2,3,4/2,4,6,8,1, &c. 1th. அதி சங்கலிதம். The geometrical series whose first term is 1 and whose ratio is 2.--as 1,2,4,8,16,32, &c. 11th. சங்கலிதசங்கலிதம். The series whose respective terms are the summation of the corresponding number of terms in the natural series--as 1 2 3 4/1,3,6,1, 5 6/15, 21, &c. 12th. இலாடசங்கலிதம். 13th. வர்க்க லாடசங்கலிதம்.
