சேவகம்
cēvakam (p. 208) s. (Sa. S'evaka.) Service, servitude, ministry, the office of a soldier, peon or other servant, சேவகத்தொழில். 2. Valor, bravery, heroism, வீரம். 3. Elephant's sleeping place, யானைத்துயிலிடம். (சது.) உன்சேவகத்தையடக்கு. Keep down your valor, be patient. சுவாமீசேவகம். Homage to thee, my Lord. சேவகஞ்செய்ய--சேவகம்பண்ண--சே வகம்பார்க்க, inf. To serve, do service, minister. சேவகத்தனம்--சேவகத்திராணி, s. The character or capacity of a soldier, peon, &c. சேவகத்திலமர, inf. To be settle in employment--as a servant, &c. சேவகத்திலமர்த்த, inf. trumm (p. 225) --தர்மம்--தன்மம், s. Justice, right, equity, law, நீதி. 2. Virtue, moral and religious merit according to the Shastras, ஒழுக்கம். 3. Charity, any charitable or meritorious act from which future good is expected --as alms-giving; building or endowing temples, contributing to the support of life, human or brute, or the maintenance of religion, or religious establishments. (See அறம்) (c.) 4. Peculiar or prescribed duty, occupation, &c., according to the different ranks and classes in society--as giving alms, &c., by the house-holder; administering justice, by kings; piety and performing rites by brahmans; courage, bravery in the solider; shaving in the barber, சாதிக்குரிய கருமம். 5. Nature, instinct, characteristic, property or action in animals--as humming in bees, barking in dogs, இயல்பு. 6. Inherent and peculiar qualities in plants, as fragrance in flowers; flavors in fruits, குணம். W. p. 439. DHARMMA.--Note. The negative of the above is அதர்மம், injustice, &c. தருமந்தலைகாக்கும். Burying, or burning the deceased poor, அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடு தல். தருமசாட்சி, s. King's evidence, witnesses cited by the king. தருமசாதனப்பட்டையம்--தருமசாத னம், s. A deed of endowment inscribed on copper. See சாதனம். தருமசாது, s. A very mild, patient and benevolent person, தருமிஷ்டி. தருமசாத்திரம், s. Code of laws, especially the Smriti; rules of justice; ethics, moral philosophy; jurisprudence, ஸ்மிருதி. See கலைஞானம். தருமசாலி, s. A person famed for charity; [ex சாலி.] தருமசாலை, s. An almonry, or place, where any, or all, of the thirty-two charitable acts are performed. தருமசிந்தை--தருமசிந்தனம், s. A charitable or virtuous disposition, motive, intention, object, &c. தருமசிவாசாரி, s. A name of the gurus of the mercantile caste. தருமசீலன், s. (fem. தருமசீலி.) A charitable person piously disposed. தருமசூட்சுமம், s. A nice and difficult point in pleading. தருமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To do charitable and virtuous acts. தருமதானம், s. Beneficence, charitable gifts. தருமதேவதை, s. The goddess of virtue born from the right breast of Brahma, அம்பாலிகை. 2. The vehicle of Siva in the form of a bull, நந்தி. 3. (fig.) A good woman, உத்தமி.--Note. The goddess is described as placing four feet on the earth in the golden age; three in the next, or silver age; two in the brazen; and only one in the iron age. தருமநடை, s. Combat between two champions of equal powers, with the same kind of weapons, and taking no improper advantage. தருமவட்டி, s. Lawful interest. (c.) தருமவாடி, s. An enclosure from which alms are given. தருமவாட்டி--தருமவதி, s. A charitable female. தருமவாளி--தருமவான்--தருமவந்தன், s. A charitable and pious man. (c.) தருமாசனத்தார், s. Judges. தருமாசனம், s. tīrttam (p. 243) s. (Sa. Teertha.) Ceremonial purity, சுத்தம். 2. Sacred rivers, or waters at a place of pilgrimage, or as brought from such place, புண்ணியதீர்த்தம். 3. Consecrated water used for washing an idol, which is afterward brought out and given to the people, especially on the last day of the festival, either to be drunk by them, or taken home for the sick to dispel diseases, திருமஞ்சனநீர். 4. Water consecrated for the sick, ஓதியிறைக்கும்நீர். 5. The merit of bathing on an auspicious day, புண்ணியகாலஸ்நா னசுத்தம். 6. A temple festival of procession, திருவிழா. 7. Water in common. நீர். 8. [pl. of தேவன்.] Gods, celestials, deities, objects of worship, gods of Swerga or any other inferior class, சுரர். 2. Honorable persons, as a guru or priest, உயர்ந்தோர்.--Note. According to the Saiva sect the superior gods, or forms of the first order assumed by the Deity are five, viz.: 1. Brahma, பிரமா. 2. Vishnu, விட்டுணு. 3. Rudra or Siva, உருத்திரன். 4. Mayesvara, மயேச்சுரன். 5. Sathasiva, சதாசிவன், These are called, பஞ்சமூர்த்திகள்; the five Murtis, or பஞ்சகர்த்தாக்கள்; five lords. தேவர்கோயில், s. A temple, தேவால யம். தேவர்கோன்--தேவேந்திரன், s. Indra. தேவர்க்காடல், v. noun. Demoniac possession, dancing after certain sacrifices to devils, as சன்னதம், which see. தேவர்வகை, s. The gods of Swerga, 33,,, are divided into four classes, with a chief for each கோடி, or 1,,, as follows. 1.துவாதசாதித்தர், the twelve Adityas. ஆதித்தர், (lit.) the twelve suns, chiefs of their class numbering with them, 12,,, 2. ஏகாதசருத்திரர், the eleven Rudras. உருத்திரர், lords of their companies. comprising in all, 11,,, 3. அஷ்டவசுக்கள், the eight Vasus. their classes, including themselves, containing 8,,. 4. மருத்துவர், the two Asvinis, அச்சுவினிகள், the two physicians, the whole class being 2,,. தேவலகன், s. A brahman who attends on an idol, அர்ச்சகப்பிராமணன். W. p. 423. DEVALAKA. தேவலோகம், s. World of the gods, Swerga, the third of the secven upper worlds, of which Indra is king, the lowest heaven of mortals, who assume the form of gods for a residence in it. The enjoyments are all sensual, and the period of their continuance depends on the merit of the persons while on earth. When this is exhausted, they return for another period of probation; or go to a place of suffering for the expiration of previous demerit. This is the only heaven presented to the hope of the multitude, and generally the highest bliss they anticipate, சுவர் க்கம். தேவவசனம்--தேவவாக்கு, s. The word of God, the divine, word, கடவுள்வாக்கு. தேவவசீகரம், s. [R. Cathol. usage] Transubstantiation. See வசீகரணம். தேவவருஷம்--தேவவருடம், s. A year of the gods. See தேவாண்டு. தேவவிரதன், s. (St.) Bishma, வீடுமன். 2. A pious or religious person, கடவுளைவழி படுவோன். W. p. 434. DEVAVRUTA. தேவவிருட்சம், s. Any of the five species of trees in Swerga, பஞ்சதரு. W. p. 424. DEVAVRUKSHA. தேவவெளிப்படுத்தல், s. (Chirs. usage.) Divine revelation. தேவவைத்தியம், s. Superior medical preparations requiring a knowledge of chemistry, and regarded as of divine origin. See வைத்தியம். தேவன், s. A Deity, a god, a divine being, கடவுள். W. p. 421. DEVA. 2. A title given to அகம்படியர் caste. 3. A title given to some among Maravars. 4. (சது.) The name of Argha, அருகன். தேவாங்கம், s. Silk cloth, பட்டுச்சீலை. தேவாசனம், s. [in chris. usage.] The throne of god, an altar, கடவுளிருக்கை. தேவாசுவம்--தேவாஸ்வம், s. The horse of Indra, இந்திரன்பரி; [ex அசுவம்.] தேவாண்டு--தேவஆண்டு, s. A year of the gods of Swerga, being three hundred and sixty-five yaers of mortals, திவ்வியவருஷம். தேவாதாயம்--தேவதாயம், s. Allowance for the support of heathen temples. தேவாதி, s. God, கடவுள், (சது.) தேவாதிதேவன், s. The God of gods. தேவாதியர், s. [com.தேவாதிகள்.] The gods of Swerga and other celestials. தேவாதீனம், s. Properties, peculiar rights, prerogative, &c., of a deity. 2. Divine providence. See தெய்வாதீனம். தேவாத்திரம்--தேவாஸ்திரம், s. A divine missile-weapon from the gods. தேவாமிர்தம்--தேவாமுதம், s. The ambrosia of the gods, the food of immortality, தேவருணவு. தேவாரம், s. Divine praises, songs, &c., chanted by an assistant of the priest others, after the performance of the puja in the Saiva temples. They were made by the three celebrated servants of Siva, அப்பர், சம்பந்தர் and சுந்தரர், and are called the Tamil Vedas, being considered divine. தேவாலயம், s. A temple, a place of worship, any sacred shrine, கோயில். W. p. 424. DEVALAYA. 2. (சது.) The golden mountain Naha Meru, as the favorite resort of the gods, மேருகிரி. See ஆலயம். தேவாலயத்தினுடைமை, s. Durga, துர்க்கை. 4. Kali. காளி. 5. A queen, the wife of a prince, or nobleman, a term of respect to a married women, சீமாட்டி. 6. A wife, மனைவி--as அண்ணன்தேவி. elder brother's wife. தேவிகோட்டம், s. A wedding-badge, தாலிநூல். 8. Carpenter's or mason's line, எற்றுநூல்.--In combination it takes grammatical changes like நால். Of நூல் or sacred learning there are நூ three: 1. முதனூல், an original scientific work regarded as divine, the Vedas; 2. வழிநூல், a work derived from and agreeing with the original, being an enlargement, as the Vedanta; 3. சார்புநூல், a work following the original, secondary, but differing in some particulars; collateral writings, as the Adwitta. நூற்பலகல். The author of a work. நூலாதாரம், s. A primer or first book; the alphabet; [ex ஆதாரம்.] நூலாமாலை, s. Craft, artifice, devices. (R.) நூலாய்வோர், appel. n. Moral of legal rules. நூலியாப்பு, s. The composition of a work, being of four kinds: 1. தொகுத்தல், substance in brief, compendium, synopsis; 2. விரித்தல், detail, amplification; 3. தொகைவிரி, compendium and detail; 4. மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, translation. நூலிழந்தவள், appel. n. A widow; a woman divested of her wedding-badge, தாலியறுத்தவன். நூலிழை, s. A single thread. நூலிழைக்க, inf. To reel yarn, to disentangle yarn from the skein and wind it on the reel, to unwind yarn. நூலுண்டை, s. A ball of thread, yarn, cotton, &c., நூலுருண்டை. 2. A weaver's bobbin with the yarn, தார்க்கெண்டை. நூலுத்தி, s. The proper arrangement of words, as தந்திரவுத்தி. நூலுந்தாலியும். The wedding string and badge. நூலுரைப்போன், appel. n. A teacher. நூலுரையுணர்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Learned men, கற்றோர். நூலுறிஞ்சி, appel. n. A weaver. (in contempt.) நூலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a treatise. See உறுப்பு. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To buy thread as a weaver. 2. See எடு, v. நூலேணி, s. A rope-ladder, கயிற்றேணி. 2. [in mythol.] Fancied threads or strings, as a guide, by which to pass and repass through the sky, to and from the world of the celestials. 3. [prov.] The shrouds of a vessel, பாய்மரத்தேணி. நூலோடுதல், v. noun. Warping for the loom, பாவோடுதல். நூலோட்ட, inf. To sew or stitch loosely, to haste. நூலோர், s. [pl.] Brahmans as wearing the sacred thread, பார்ப்பார். 2. The learned, the literati, அறிவுடையோர். 3. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். (சது.) நூல்கேட்க, inf. To learn a science under a teacher. Twisting broken threads together. நூல்நிமிண்டுகிறபேச்சு. Unconnected talk. நூல்போடுதல், v. noun. Marking with a thread, as a carpenter, &c., குறிபோடு தல். 2. Putting on the thread of the Brahman or other caste, பூணூல்போடுதல். நூல்போட்டுப்பிளத்தல், v. noun. Marking and cleaving, as timber. 2. Making an exact division, commonly into halves. 3. [in irony.]Administering strict or rigid justice. நூல்வலை, s. A fisherman's net. நூல்வல்லோர், s. [pl.] The learned, the literati, கல்விமான்கள். 2. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். நூல்வழக்கு, s. The sentiments or theory of a work, நூலினேற்பாடு. நூல்வழிநிற்றல், v. noun. Acting up to the moral precepts of a book. நூல்விடுதல், v. noun. Spinning a thread and letting itself down, as a spider, or caterpillars. நூல்விதி, s. Injunction, prescription or rule laid down in books. நூல்விரிவு, s. Amplification or detail of a work. நூற்கயிறு, s. String made of thread. நூற்கருத்து, s. The sentiments of an author. See கருத்து. 2. The author's meaning of any given passage. நூற்சுழி, s. A skein of thread. நூற்குச்சு, s. A tassel of cotton thread. நூற்குஞ்சம், s. A number of threads composing the warp in a loom. See குஞ்சம். 2. A skein. நூற்குற்றம், s. The ten faults or defects in a literary composition. See under குற்றம். நூற்சரடு, s. Cotton thread for stringing beads. நூற்சார்பு, s. Sentiments inculated in a work, &c. See சார்பு. நூற்சுருள்--நூற்சுருணை, s. A skein or clew of thread. நூற்பகந்திரம், s. A venereal ulcer on the peritoneum. See பகந்திரம். நூற்படுகு, s. A weaver's warp. நூற்பந்து, s. A ball of thread. நூற்பயன், s. The general ends or objects of literature. See நாற்பொருள். நூற்பழக்கம், v. noun. Acquaintance with science, literature, &c. நூற்பா, s. A kind of அகவல் verse, commonly employed by lexicographers, சூத்திரப்பா. 2. Warp in weaving, தறியிற் பிணைக்கும்பா. நூற்பாவகவல், s. The நூற்பா verse. நூர்புலவர், s. [pl.] Persons of accomplished or distinguished learning. நூற்புறத்திணை, s. Proof from established authority; a term used by Beschi in Tonnool. நூற்புறனடை, s. Notes of an explanatory character given at the end of a work. See புறனடை. நூற்பொருள், s. Subjects treated of or inculcated in a book. 2. Contents of a book, நூலட்டவணை. நூற்றீட்சை, s. vāṉm (p. 387) s. The atmosphere, firmament, heaven, ஆகாயம். [improp. மானம்.] 2. Rain, மழை; [ex Sa. Vana, water.] 3. [prov.] One of the ornamental lines in a tower, கோபுரத்தினோருறுப்பு. வானஞ்சுருங்கில். If rain be wanting.--see under சுருங்கு. வானசாஸ்திரம், s. Astronomy. வானசோதிகள், s. Heavenly bodies. வானம்பாடி, appel. n. A sky-lark. வானவரம்பன், s. A title of the Sera kings as having a lofty boundary, சேரன்; [ex வரம்பு.] (சது.) வானவர், s. Gods, celestials. வானவருறையுள், s. The nine orders in heaven according to Romanists: 1. பத்திச்சுவாலிகர், seraphs; 2. ஞானாதிக்கர், cherubim; 3. பத்திராசனர், those who surround the throne of God --These are considered to be invested with, dignity of the first order; 4. நாத கிருத்தியர், those employed on gracious errands, messengers; 5. சத்துவகர் or சத்தி கர், celestial powers; 6. பலத்தவர், those averting evils--These are considered as invested with dignity of the second order; 7. பிதாத்மிகர், principalities or princes of earthly kingdoms; 8. அதிதூதர், archangels; 9. தூதர், angels, ministering spirits.
