cāttāṉi (p. 176) --சாத்தானியன், s. Among the Vaishnuvas, one of mixed or low caste, as a flower gatherer, a minstrel or an itinerant mendicant, ஓர்சாதிப்பிரஷ்டன். (c.) 30)

cāttu (p. 176) கிறேன், சாத்தினேன், வேன், சாத்த, v. a. To daub, smear, anoint--as sandal, or other unguents, சந்தனமுதலியஅப்ப. 2. To put a cloth, an ornament, or flowers on an idol, a holy personage, &c., ஆடைமுதலிய அ ணிய. 3. To slap, strike, tap, beat, அடிக்க. 4. To shut, put to, to close--as a door, &c., கதவுமுதலியமூட. 5. (impr. for சார்த்து.) To place against, ஒன்றின்மேற்சார்த்த. (c.) சாத்தாதவர், s. (pl.) Those who do not wear the sacred thread, or the tuft of hair. A mixed class of Vaishnuvas--opposed, to சாத்தினவர். They have their principal occupation, as flower-gatherers, minstrels or mendicants. (R.) Compare சாத்தானியன். சாத்திக்கழிக்க, inf. To adorn the idol with flower or garlands, and afterwards remove them. சாத்திக்கொள்ள, inf. [prov.] To dress one's self with garlands, costly attire, &c., in contempt. சாத்துப்படி--சாத்துகாப்பு, s. Flowers, jewels and vestments as the attire of an idol. 2. [in burlesque.] A good drubbing, நல்லடி. சாத்துக்கவி, s. A poem prefixed or affixed to a work, by a different hand. சாத்துநாற்று--சாத்துநாறு, s. Young plants planted in the place of those which have died. (R.) திருக்கடைக்காப்புச்சாத்த, inf. To shut the door of the temple, கோயிற்கதவுமூட. 2. To finish a poem addressed to a deity by making the last verse. See under திரு. வில்வஞ்சாத்த, inf. To cast the fragrant leaves of the வில்வம் tree at the feet of the idol. See வில்வம். 41) *

mākatam (p. 348) s. That which belongs to, or is produced in the kingdom of Magadha, or south Behar, மகதசம்பந்தம்; [ex மகதம்.] W. p. 654. MAGAD'HA. மாகதர், s. [pl.] The inhabitants of Magadha, as மகதர். 2. A particular tribe said to spring from a Kshatrya, or kingly, mother, and a Vaisya, or servile, father. Their profession is that of minstrels, who sing the praises and chivalrous exploits of sovereigns, and attend on the march of an army. They are still numerous in the west of India under the name of Bhauts. மாகதி, s. Long-pepper. See திப்பிலி. 2. A kind of jasmine, முல்லைக்கொடி, Jasminum fricotomum. (Rott.) 3. The language of Maga'dha, a dialect of Sanscrit; a Prakrit--nearly the same as the Pali of the Buddhas and Jainas. See Sa. Magadha. 6) *

yāẕ (p. 370) s. A musical instrument, the lute, வீணை. 2. The first lunar mansion, as அச்சு வினி. 3. The sixth lunar mansion, திருவா திரை. 4. Gemini in the Zodiac, மிதுனவிராசி. (சது.) யாழோர்கூட்டம், s. Marriage by mutual consent, synonymous with காந்தருவமணம். யாழ்த்திறம், s. Different lutes, peculiar to the different soils, as குறிஞ்சி, நெய்தல், மருதம், பாலை, முல்லை. யாழ்நரம்பு, s. The strings of musical instruments. யாழ்ப்பாணம், s. Jaffna. யாழ்ப்பாணநாயனார், s. A blind minstrel of the Chola country, who being favored by the Singalese king, obtained possession of Jaffoa, then uninhabited, and introduced there a colony of Tamil people. யாழ்ப்பாணர், s. The people of Jaffna. 2. Players on the lute, யாழ்வாசிப்போர். (p.) யாழ்வகை, s. The different species of lute. They are four. 1. பேரியாழ். 2. சகோ டயாழ். 3. மகரயாழ். 4. செங்கோட்டியாழ், which see. யு தேவம், which resembles the Greek Theos and Latin Deus. 2. A Yoke, commonly நுகம். 3. A couple, a pair. See உகம்.
