ammu (p. 21) கிறேன், அம்மினேன், வேன், அம்ம, v. n. To dissemble on hearing a thing spoken of by seeming to know nothing of it, to act with reserve and duplicity wanting ingenuousness, மாரீசம் பண்ண. 2. கிறது, அம்மினது, ம், அம்ம. [prov. impr. for பம்பு.] To cover thickly as a mass of motionless clouds, overspreading the heavens, obscuring the rays of the sun, &c., மூட. 3. To feel the sensation of weight in the head, as the effect of cold, தலைகனக்க. அம்முக்கள்ளன், s. A cheat, a fraudulent fellow, one who is void of honest principles, one that is a rogue within. 33)

aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. To make odd gestures, as children, &c., mimic, mock by gestures, கரகஞ்செய்ய. (c.) அழகுத்தேமல், s. A beauty spot. See தேமல். 35)

ākku (p. 36) கிறேன், ஆக்கினேன், வேன், ஆக்க, v. a. To cause to be, create, effect, make, உண்டாக்க. 2. To cook, to mature. to accomplish, சமைக்க. 3. To raise one from obscurity, want, distress, danger, கைதூக்கிவிட. It is frequently joined with nouns to form compound verbs, as குண மாக்குதல், &c.; [ex ஆ, v.] ஆக்கல்--ஆக்குகை--ஆக்குதல், v. noun. Making, creating, &c., உண்டாக் குகை. 15) *

āḷ (p. 43) s. A person, grown man, ஆண் மகன். 2. A man of property, power, influence, consequence, &c., ஆடவன். 3. A servant, slave, அடிமை. 4. A laborer, messenger, கூலியாள். 5. A devotee, தொண்டன். 6. The common termination of the third person singular feminine, பெண்பாற்படர்க்கை யொருமைவிகுதி. ஆளானான். He has attained to manhood, has become a person of consequence. அவனதற்காளோ? Is he competent for that? மரங்களாளாய்ப்போயின. The trees have arrived at maturity. ஆட்காட்டி, s. The forefinger, சுட்டுவிரல். 2. A bird, the lapwing, which screeches on the approach of a person by night, ஓர்பறவை. ஆட்கூலி, s. The hire of a workman. ஆட்கொல்லி, s. A murderer, manslayer, homicide, assassin, கொலை காரன். 2. (fig.) Gold, money, பணம். ஆட்கொள்ள, inf. To employ as a servant, admit as a worshipper, devotee, &c.--used in reference to the deity, or a great person--implying grace or condescension in the receiver, and benefit to the person taken, அடிமைகொள்ள. ஆட்பட, inf. To become a servant, devotee, &c., commonly to a deity. 2. [prov.] To rise from obscurity, become a man of some property, or consequence. 3. To come to manhood. 4. To regain strength, &c., after sickness. அவனென்னாலேயாட்பட்டான். He became eminent by me. ஆட்படுத்த, inf. To adopt one as a devotee, servant, &c. 2. To raise a person from obscurity. 3. To rear, bring up a person from a child to a man, cherish, nourish. ஆட்பார்க்க, inf. To seek another. 2. To watch as a thief, guard himself against detection. 3. To look for persons for any bad purpose--as a prostitute, &c.--as Yama the god of death. ஆட்பார்த்துழலுமருளில்கூற்றுண்மையால். Since Yama the merciless god of death, who goes about looking for his victims, does actually exist. (நாலடி). ஆளரி, s. Vishnu in his incarnation as a lion. ஆளன்கீழப்பெண்சாதி, s. A wife. ஆளானவன், s. One who is arrived at the state of manhood. 2. One who is become eminent, or exalted over others. ஆளொட்டி--ஆளொதுங்கி, s. A hiding place, மறைவு. 2. A sentry-box, காவற்கூடு. ஆளோட்டி, s. A slave-driver, task-master, overseer of workmen, ஆளை வேலைகொள்வோன். ஆள்தேறுதல், v. noun. Recovering strength or stoutness. ஆள்த்திட்டம்--ஆட்டிட்டம், s. Depth, capacity of a person. 2. Marks for recognizing a person, recognizance. ஆள்வணங்கி, s. A tree, Ficus, L. ஆள்வினை, s. Energy, alacrity, diligence, application, exertion, perseverance, an enterprise, முயற்சி. 2. Bravery, உற்சாகம். (p.) ஆள்வினையுடைமை, s. The possession of energy. (p.) வீட்டாள், s. A house-servant. சிற்றாள், s. A servant boy. 58)

iruḷ (p. 51) s. Darkness, obscurity, அந் தகாரம். 2. A dark color, black, blackness, கறுப்பு. 3. (p.) Ignorance, mental delusion, stupor, உன்மத்தம். 4. An elephant, யானை. 5. Hell, நரகம். ஓவென்ற இருளாயிருக்கின்றது. There is total, absolute darkness. இந்தவீடிருளடைந்துகிடக்கிறது. This house is become dark; i. e. ruined. இருட்படலம், s. Wide-spread darkness. இருட்பரப்பு, s. iruḷ (p. 51) --இருளு, கிறது--இருண் டது--இருளும்--இருள, v. n. To become dark --as clouds before rain, to darken, இருட்ட. 2. To grow dark--as at the close of the day; to become obscure--as a heavenly or luminous body, மங்க. 3. To become dark or dim in color, ஒளிமழுங்க. 4. To become obscure or dark--as when over-spread with clouds, இருப்பட. 5. To darken or be dark, as the mind, be in ignorance, illusion, doubt, &c., மருள. மனமிருண்டுபோயிற்று. The mind is obscured or is under the power of illusion. வானமிருண்டது. The heavens grew black. இருண்டகாடு, s. A dark forest. இருண்டசிவப்பு, s. Dark red, red mixed with black. இருண்டமனம், s. A mind that conceals dark and diabolical designs. இருட்சி, v. noun. Darkness, obscurity, cloudiness, gloom, becoming dark, இருள்கை. 2. Mental darkness, ignorance of spiritual things, மருளுகை. 5)

Sun-rise and sun-set, the rising and setting of the sun, moon, or other heavenly body. உதயாத்தமனபரியந்தம், s. From sun-rise to sun-set, from rising to setting of a heavenly body. பொழுதுதயம், s. The rising of the sun. வெள்ளியுதயம், s. The appearing of Venus in the rising sign. 2. The rising of a star. நிலவுதயம், s. The rising of the moon. 144) *

urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2. aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. A name of Skanda, முருகன். 2. Verapattra, வீரபத் திரன். (p.) ஐங்கலம், s. Sixty marcals. ஐங்காதம், s. Five leagues. ஐங்காயம், s. The five kinds of காயம். (See காயம்.) 2. Other five kinds are used in witchcraft, viz.: 1. மிளகு, pepper. 2. வெந்தயம், dill. 3. ஓமம், cardamom. 4. வெள்ளுள்ளி, garlic. 5. பெருங் காயம், assaf&oe;tida. ஐங்காயத்தூள்--ஐங்காயவுண்டை, s. Powders of five ingredients given to women after child-birth, ஓர்மருந்து. ஐங்குரவர், s. The five superiors, ஐம்பெரியோர், viz.: King, அரசன்; guru, குரு; father, பிதா; mother, மாதா and elder brother, தமயன். In some classifications, உபாத்தியாயன் is placed instead of மாதா. ஐங்குழு, s. The five confidential servants of a king, அரசர்க்குக்குழு, viz.: 1. மந்தியர், ministers. 2. புரோகிதர், priests. 3. சேனாபதியர், generals. 4. தூதர், ambassadors. 5. சாரணர், spies. ஐங்கோணம், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. Indra, the god of the celestials, is a living monument of the wonderful power of those who control the five senses. (குறள்.) ஐந்தனுருபு, s. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations. I hate the very sight of him. 2. Even the sight of it is injurious; i. e. prejudicial--spoken where mutual animosity exists--as in the kite and snake, &c. 3. (p.) It will not appear to the eye. கண்ணிலேகுத்துகிறதோ. Does it hurt your eyes? why do you envy me, &c. கண்ணுக்கின்பமானபொருள். That which is delectable to the eye. கண்ணுக்குக்கண்ணானவன். A watchman. கண்காணஞ்செலுத்த--கண்காணம் பண்ண, inf. To superintend, watch. கண்காணம்வைக்க, inf. To appoint an inspector, to set a watch. கண்காணி, s. An inspector, an overseer, a supervisor, an agent, மேல்வி சாரிப்புக்காரன். 2. One who looks after the subordinates in a government office, சிரே ஷ்டாதிகாரி. 3. The hot sensation of the eyes caused by neglecting to bathe, by disease, &c., கண் ணெரிவு. கண்காரர், s. Persons who sit before a conjurer, looking at the magical paint without winking, and to whom the discoveries are made, அஞ்ச னம்பார்ப்போர். கண்குத்திபாம்பு, s. A bright green snake that is said to strike at the eye, the eye-snake; a whip-snake. கண்குவளை, s. The socket of the eye, கட்குழி. கண்குழிதல், v. noun. Sinking of the eyes by disease, emaciation, &c. கண்குளிரப்பார்க்க, inf. To refresh the eyes by viewing a pleasing object--as a dear child, &c., to feast the eyes. கண்குளிர்ச்சி, v. noun. Refreshing, gratifying, pleasing to the sight. கண்குறிப்பு, s. A significant expression of the eye, கண்சமிக்கை. கண்கூச, inf. To see obscurely from the eyes being dazzled. 2. To be weak-sighted, tender-eyed. கண்கூடு, s. Socket of the eye, கண்குவளை. 2. A thing in sight, ocular demonstration, பிரத்தியட்சம். கண்கூடாய், adv. Evidently, demonstrably. கண்கூர்மை, s. Sharpness of sight. கண்கூலி, s. A present for finding a thing lost. கண்கெட, inf. To be struck blind. 2. adv. In spite of one's own sight, to the destruction of one's own eyes, &c. கண்கெடச்செய்ய, inf. To do what one knows to be wrong--as presenting defiled food to an idol, friend, &c. கண்கெடப்பேச, inf. To falsify the evidence of one's own eyes in delivering testimony, &c. கண்கெட்டதெய்வம், s. The blind deity--a profane and familiar phrase among the vulgar used in seasons of distress. கண்கொள்ளாக்காட்சி, s. A great or wonderful object, a thing over-powering to the sight, அதிசயக்காட்சி. கண்சமிக்கை, s. A wink with the eyes. கண்சாடை, s. A winking at, taking faint notice of, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பு, s. A side-look in displeasure. 2. Connivance. 3. Partiality, favor shown by a wink, &c. கண்சாய்ப்பாய்ப்பார்க்க, inf. To look jealously, to have an evil eye. கண்சாய்ப்பாயிருக்க, inf. To overlook, be partial in judgment, to connive. கண்சிமிட்ட, inf. To make a signal with the eye. 2. To wink, to twinkle through weakness of eyes. கண்சிமிட்டு, s. A signal of the eye. கண்சுருட்ட, inf. To entice one by uncommon beauty, lustre, &c., to cantivate, to fascinate. கண்செருகல்--கண்சொருகல், v. noun. Rolling up of the eyes--as in swoons, fits, death-bed, and sometimes in sleep. கண்ணஞ்ச, inf. To fear, dread, as excited by the sight of a superior, lightning, &c. கண்ணஞ்சனம், s. Collyrium, the ointment used to blacken the eye-lashes. 2. Blue vitriol. கண்ணடைக்க, inf. To choke, stop up--as the orifice of a spring, a nipple, துவாரமடைக்க. கண்ணடைய, inf. Giddiness, dizziness, கண்மயக்கம். கண்ணாம்பூச்சியாட, inf. To run about in play with the eyes covered, or with the eyelid doubled over. கண்ணாம்பொத்தி, s. [prop. கண் பொத்தி.] A game, children's play, hideand-seek. கண்பொத்திவிளையாட, inf. To play at hide-and-seek. கண்ணாயிரம், s. The argus of the Hindus. கண்ணாயிருக்க, inf. The blight of the eyes, an unlucky look supposed to cause sickness, &c., திட்டி தோஷம். விண்ணேறுதப்பினாலுங்கண்ணேறுதப்பாது. One may escape a thunderbolt, but to escape an evil eye is impossible. மதன்கண்ணேறெய்தலுங்கழிந்ததோ. (Has the waist) become so attenuated through the influence of kama's eyes? கண்ணூறுகழிக்க, inf. To look intently, gaze, to eye, see, look upon, பார்க்க. கண்ணோக்கு, v. noun. Gaze, glance, கண்பார்வை. கண்ணோட, inf. To run out--as the sight on an object of desire, to look at with desire, cast wistful or lustful glances, விருப்பமாகப்பார்க்க. 2. To watch, look after, inspect, superintend, பார்வை யிட. 3. To examine cursorily--as a book, writing, &c., மேலெழுச்சியாய்ப்பார்க்க. 4. To be kind, benignant, gracious, to treat kindly, be indulgent, தயவாயிருக்க. 5. To be partial, to have the mind biased toward one, to yield to feelings of compassion, தாட்சிணியஞ்செய்ய.--Note. All the meanings have reference to sight as prompting to passion and action. உடையவன்கண்ணோடாப்பயிர், s. Growing corn not looked after by the owner. கண்ணோட்டம், s. A glance, a look, the scope of the sight, கடைக்கண்பா ர்வை. 2. Regard to persons, either in a good or bad sense, kindness as prompted at the moment, partiality, favoritism, glow of kind feelings toward a friend, reluctance to deny his request, &c., கடாட்சம். 3. Civility, complaisance, regard, மரியாதை. 4. Discerning by the eye, close examination, scrutiny, பார்வை யிடுகை. இவனவனிடத்திற்கண்ணோட்டம்வைத்தான். He was very kind to him. கண்திட்டம்--கண்மதிப்பு, s. A glance. கண்பார்க்க, inf. To examine precious stones, elephants, horses, &c., for sale, பரீட்சிக்க. 2. To cast a benignant look on one, கடாட்சிக்க. 3. To pity or compassionate, இரங்க. கண்பிடி, s. [prov.] A small jackfruit or a small bunch of palmyra or other fruit attached to a larger one. கண்புகைச்சல், v. noun. A disease of the eye. ஓர்நோய். 2. Dimness of sight from age, disease, கண்மங்கல். கண்புதைக்க. inf. To cover the eyes, to hoodwink, கண்பொத்த. (p.) 2. To weaken or prevent the sight--as dust, &c. கண்பூத்தல், v. noun. Ardent spirits consume the liver. ஆளைக்கருக்கிப்போட்டார்கள். They have greatly harassed the person by reproofs. பத்தியத்துக்குகருக்கிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To fry or cook (food) and give it to a patient-as a proper diet. மனதைக்கருக்க, inf. To wound the feelings, to offend. கருக்கல், v. noun. The act of blackening. 2. kiruttiyam (p. 111) s. Act, actions, performances, operation, தொழில். 2. Moral actions good or bad, involving future retributions, கன்மக்கிரியை. 3. A course of conduct, நடக்கை. 4. Work, business, employment, லௌகிகவேலை. 5. Religious rules, prescribed duties, கடமை. 6. Rites, ceremonies, &c., religious acts or practice, சடங்கு. 7. The operations of the deity--popularity in the characters of creator, preserver and destroyer; but in the mystic parts of the Agama system, the works of obscuring and enlightening the soul are superadded. Wils. p. 243. KRUTYA. தன்கிருத்தியந்தான்பார்க்கவேண்டும். Each one must perform his appropriate duties, personal, social, relative, civil, &c. கிருத்தியகர்த்தா, s. An operating deity, or a god who performs either of the five great operations in the universe. கிருத்தியகர்த்தாக்கள், s. (pl.) Agents who carry on operations in the universe; also, those of the விஞ்ஞானகலர் and பிர ளயாகலர் class of souls that have advanced so as to be cleansed from மலம், and permitted to be operative. கிருத்தியப்பிழை, s. Misdeeds, misbehaviour. 2. Failure or transgression in the performance of prescribed rites, ceremonies or other duties. கிருத்தியமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not practise the rites of the religion. ஒருகிருத்தியமுமில்லாதவன். One unemployed. கிருத்தியமுடிக்க, inf. To perform prescribed duties--as religious rites, ceremonies, &c. கிருத்தியம்பண்ண--கிருத்தியம்நடத்த inf. To perform the works of creation, &c..--as a deity, ஐந்தொழில்செய்ய. The direct object of this work is fancied to be; 1. To cleanse the soul from its moral defilements. 2. To cause it to experience the fruit of former actions. 3. To give it a temporary rest. 4. To produce an equilibrium between the good and evil actions of the soul. 5. To emancipate it from the பாசம் entanglements. (சிவ. சி.) 2. To perform works, rites, &c., சடங்குசெய்ய. 3. To perform the duties of one's calling, தொழில்செய்ய. 4. To perform the funeral rites for a deceased ancestor, உத்தரகிரியைசெய்ய. பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், s. The five operations of deity under various names, forms and modifications, viz.: 1st. சிருட்டி or படை த்தல், the work of creating or transforming matter, evolving it from the primitive Maya, producing words, furnishing the soul with its appropriate body, according to its actions in a previous birth, &c. In the popular system, this office is ascribed to Brahma. 2d.திதி or காத்தல், the work of preserving, usually ascribed to Vishnu. 3d. சங்காரம் or அழித்தல், the work of destroying, or of reducing the universe to the primitive Maya, through numerous involutions, --as earth into water, water into fire, &c. This office is ascribed to உருத்தி ரன், who by his worshippers is identified with Siva whom they consider supreme. 4th. திரோபவம் or மறைத்தல், the work of obscuration, or the veiling of the soul in moral darkness, and beclouding the understanding, so that the divine being cannot be perceived, while the mind attracted and illuded by visible and sensual objects, is excited to the performance of new actions, by which absolute liberation from பாசம் entanglements is prevented, and connection with Maya and its consequent transmigrations--except where the sanchita (சஞ்சிதம்) of former births is exhausted --is indefinitely prolonged. This is ascribed to மயேச்சுரன். 5th. அனுக்கிரகம் or அருளல், this is a work of benevolence as exerted for the benefit of the soul in furnishing it with appropriate bodies by which to expiate the guilt of former actions, though obscuring it with திரோ பவம், while it is thus working itself clear, at length withdrawing the veil and showing it that all visible and sensual objects are illusory and deceptive; also annihilating the passions and exciting disgust toward the objects of sense, and utter indifference to all mundane affairs, and thus causing entire cessation from physical and moral actions, and maturing it for final emancipation, and union with the Supreme. It is ascribed to சதாசிவம். சமுசாரகிருத்தியம், s. Domestic affairs, household business. 10) *

kiḷmpu (p. 111) கிறேன், கிளம்பினேன், வேன், கி ளம்ப, v. n. To rise in the air or water, to ascend, to get up; to rise above the level, to emerge, to rise to the surface, எழும்ப. 2. To emerge from obscurity, to become illustrious, to rise to, or gain eminence; to prosper, to be elevated, மேலோ ங்க. 3. To grow up, வளர. 4. To be built up, சுவர்முதலியனகிளம்ப. 5. To be excited, agitated, roused, மூண்டெழும்ப. 6. To be enraged, exasperated, irritated, சினத்தெ ழும்ப. 7. To be raised upon one side, பக்கத்திற்கிளம்ப. 8. To turn up, to occur, to happen; to come up in sight, to appear; to come up in discourse, dispute, &c., உண்டாக. 9. To set out, to start, to leave for another place, புறப்பட. 1. To increase; to exceed, to surpass, to excel, மேலெழும்ப. 11. To become loose, detached--as a brick, &c., that still adheres; to scale off, to flake, to peel off--as mortar, &c., எடுபட. அவனுடையபேர்கிளம்பிற்று. His fame has spread abroad. பயணங்கிளம்பினார்கள். They set out on a journey. மணங்கிளம்பிற்று. Odor was diffused. கிளம்பியாட, inf. To be stirred up with anger. 2. To act insubordinately, self-willedly, &c. கிளம்பிவிட, inf. [prov.] To agree though reluctantly; to be ultimately persuaded. 2. To leave--as a family for another house, village, &c. கிளம்பினஆள், s. A grown-up person. கிளம்பினவேலை, s. (Little used.) கீழ்ப்பாறை, s. A subterranean cell or cavern, கீழறை. (Rott.) 2. An understratum of rock, கீழிருக்கும்பாறை. கீழ்ப்புறம், s. The lower side, the underside, கீழ்ப்பக்கம். 2. The leeward or the leaning side of a vessel, தாழ்ந்தபக்கம். கீழ்மகன், s. A person of low caste, a mean person, இழிந்தோன். 2. The planet saturn, சனி. கீழ்மக்கள், s. Inferiors, low-caste people, the base, the vulgar, the ignorant, இழிந்தோர். கீழ்மாரி--கீழ்வாரி, s. Rain or thunder in the distance, towards the horizon. கீழ்மாரிகொள்ளுகிறது. It thunders at a distance. கீழ்மாரிகொண்டுமுழங்க, inf. To thunder near the horizon. கீழ்வயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, abdomen, அடிவயிறு. கீழ்க்கதுவாயளபெடை, s. [in prosody.] One of the eight அளபெடைத்தொடை, in which the first letter of every foot in a line, except the penultimate, is prolonged in sound. கீழ்க்கதுவாயியைபு, s. [in prosody.] A rhyme in which the last letter of every foot of a line, except the second, is the same ஒரியைபுத்தொடை. கீழ்க்கதுவாயெதுகை, s. [in prosody.] A rhyme or தொடை, in which the second letter, of every foot of a line, but the penultimate, is the same, ஓரெதுகைத்தொ டை. கீழ்க்கதுவாய், s. [in prosody.] Rhyming or தொடை in every foot but the penultimate; and in இயைபுத்தொடை, in every foot but the second, கதுவாய்த்தொ டையினொன்று. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்முரண், s. [in prosody.] A rhyme or தொடை, in which the first word in every foot of a line, except the penultimate, has different meanings, முரண் டொடை. கீழ்க்கதுவாய்மோனை, s. [in prosody.] A rhyme or தொடை in which the first letter of every foot of a line, but the penultimate, is the same, ஓர்மோனைத்தொடை. கீழ்மை, v. noun. Lowness, meanness, inferiority, baseness, இழிவு. 2. Submissiveness, humbleness, தாழ்மை. கீழண்டை, s. [vul.] East. கீழைத்தெரு, s. The eastern street. கீழைப்புறம், s. The eastern side, part. கீழ்ச்சீமை, s. the eastern country. கீழ்வாடை, s. The worst side of a thing, cloth, &c., the unpolished, undressed, unfinished side, குருட்டுப்பக்கம். 4. A blind or ignorant fellow (in contempt), புத்தியீனன். குருட்டுநாட்டுக்கொள்ளி. A fire-brand in a country of blind people; i. e. a light among the illiterate. குருட்டுப்பூனைவிட்டத்திற்பாய்ந்தாற்போல. As a blind cat attempted to jump at the beam. குருட்டுமாட்டைத்தெய்வங்காக்கிறது--மேய்க்கிறது. The deity tends the blind cow. கோல்எடுத்தபிள்ளைகுருட்டுப்பிள்ளை. That child playing with the sticks is a blind child; i. e. is likely to hurt itself. குருடன், s. A blind person. 2. A name of Venus; lit. the squint-eyed, சுக்கிரன். (சது.) 3. Dhrutarashtra--as congenitally blind, திருதராட்டிரன். குருடன்பெண்டிரைஅடித்தாற்போல. Like the blind man striking his wife; i. e. attempting, but hitting another object. குருடாக்க, inf. To blind; to stupefy. குருடி, s. A blind female, கண்ணில் லாள். குருட்டுக்கண், s. Blind eye. 2. Blindness of the sight. பிறவிக்குருடன், s. A person born blind. மனக்குருடு, s. Mental blindness; ignorance, illusion. குருட்டாட்டம்--குருட்டுத்தனம், s.. Blindness; absence of mind, infatuation. குருட்டாட்டமாடுகிறான். He plays blindman's buff. குருட்டாட்டமாய்ப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks foolishly, without understanding. குருட்டுத்தீர்ப்பு, s. Foolish judgment; judgment passed by an ignorant man. குருட்டுநியாயம், s. Wrong reasoning; wrong judgment. குருட்டுப்பத்தி, s. Superstition, blind zeal, bigotry. குருட்டுமுத்து, s. A dim, defective pearl. குருட்டுக்கல்லு, s. A turbid, dim gem. குருட்டுச்சாயம், s. Faint colors, in dying, மங்கற்சாயம். குருட்டுப்பக்கம், s. [prov.] Blind side, the wrong side of a printed cloth, &c. குருட்டுமைப்பட--குருட்டுமையாக, inf. To be dim or obscure--as the writing on olas, by wiping the coloring off before it is dry. 2. To become obscure--as writing to an aged person. குருடுதடவ, inf. To grope, to search and be unable to find, as if blind (said in reproach). குருட்டடி, s. Success, attained at random; a blind hit. குருட்டடியாய்ச்சொல்லிப்போட்டான். He spoke rightly at random. குருட்டடியடிக்க, inf. To speak at random, yet, commonly, to the point. குருட்டுவாக்கு, s. Acting at random --as a blind man; rashness, temerity, thoughtlessness; random success, a fortuitous hit, &c. குருட்டெழுத்து, s. Dimness of writing, &c., to an aged person. குருட்டுக்கொக்கு, s.
