aṟu (p. 33) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To cut off, part asunder, cut or break off as a string, வெட்ட. 2. To reap, நென்முதலியனவரிய. 3. To disjoin by cutting or untying--as the marriage string, to separate, sever, நீக்க. 4. To extirpate, exterminate, வேரோடழிக்க. 5. To saw asunder, வாளாலறுக்க. 6. To kill by severing the wind-pipe of beasts, &c., to slay, கழுத் தறுக்க. 7. To burrow, excavate, form subterraneous passages, வளைதோண்ட. 8. To mould bricks, செங்கல்லறுக்க. 9. with கண க்கு.] To settle accounts, தீர்க்க. 1. [with வகை.] To explain, define things clearly, finish a dispute, தீர்மானிக்க. (c.) அறுத்தகோழி துடிக்குமாப்போல். Agitated (with sorrow, anxiety, &c.,) as a fowl with its throat cut. அறுத்தறுத்தப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks distinctly. 2. He speaks decisively. 3. He uses cutting words. தடையறுத்துக்கொடுப்பேன். I will remove the obstacles, obviate objections, break the enchantments which prevent success --as in fishing, &c. வீரனுமவன்றலையறுத்தான். And Veeran cut off his head. இருளறுத்தெழுங்கதிர். The rising sun which exterminates the darkness. அறுமணை, s. An instrument for cutting vegetables, fish, &c. 2. A slut, slatterer. 3. A woman ugly or deformed in features. (c.) அறுவடை, v. noun. The act of reaping the corn. அறுவரி, s. A tax paid at fixed times. அறுவிதி, s. Decision. வழக்கறுக்க, inf. To decide a case. ஆடறுக்க, inf. To slay sheep. அறுப்பு, v. noun. Sundering, separating, cutting a part, reaping, &c., அரிகை. 2. A piece, section, அறுத்ததுண்டு. 3. An imprecation of widowhood--in allusion to the sundering of the marriage ornament at the death of the husband, தாலியறுக்கை. 4. The opening of a wound, an open cut, &c., அறுவாய். 5. The opening made in sawing a piece of timber, மரமுதலியவையினறுவாய். 6. Confutation, refutation of another's arguments, ஆட்சேபிக்கை. அறுப்புக்காலம், s. The time of harvest. அறுப்புண்க, inf. Machine, engine, any piece of mechanism; mechanism of the body or otherwise; the spring in a machine; that which gives impulse, momentum, effect, &c.--as the helm of the ship, the lock of a gun, &c., இயந்திரம். 2. Ingenious contrivance, puzzle, சூட்சவேலை. 3. Stratagem, artifice, artful trick, உபாயம். 4. Point, gist, hinge, substance of a thing, அரும்பொருளடக்கம். 5. A secret, a mystery, இரகசியம். 6. Rule, canon, definition, precept, axiom, formula. இலக்கணசூத்திரம். 7. W. p. 94. SOOTRA. Guide, clue, directory, key, index, குறிப்பு. 8. Proposition, doctrine, predicated dogma, கொள்கைச்சூத்திரம். 9. Thread, yarn, twine, line, cord, பஞ்சிநூல். --Note. Rules in Garmmar or other works are of six kinds: 1. பிண்டச்சூத்திரம், the opening of a subject by giving an abstract of the work. 2. தொகைச்சூத்திரம், a synopsis, the divisions in brief, their number, &c., a general rule. 3. வகைச்சூத்திரம், an analysis with general divisions; particular rules. 4. குறிச்சூத்திரம், definitions, &c., demonstrative rules. 5. செய்கைச்சூத்திரம், directory, as in grammar, for permutation, elision, &c., connective rules. 6. புறனடைச்சூத்திரம், supplementary rules to obviate objections; give reasons, explanations, &c., respective rules. Thess are sometimes reduced to two, குறிச்சூத்திரம் and செய்கைச்சூத்திரம். சாத்திரத்தைச்சுட்டுச் சதுமறையைப் பொய்யாக்கி சூத்திரத்தைக்கண்டுசுகம்பெறுவதெக்காலம். When shall the shastras be burnt, the four Vedas proved false, and I through a knowledge of the mystery, be made happy? சூத்திரக்காரன், s. An ingenious or curious artist, an engineer, சூட்சவேலைக்காரன். 2. A man of fine parts, of quick perception, ready wit, &c., சூட்சபுத்தியுள்ளவன். 3. A man of good tact, management, economy, கெட்டிக்காரன். சூத்திரக்கயிறு, s. The concealed strings of a puppet. 2. The strings of a purse, a bag, &c. (Compare சூட்சக்க யிறு.) 3. Any thing that puts a machine in motion. 4. The unseen line or spring of creature action, as moved by the divine hand in every event of life, கடவுளது சூட்சம். சூத்திரதாரி, s. The man who manages the springs, strings. &c., of a puppet, பதிமையாட்டி. 2. God--as moving all things, கடவுள். (p.) சூத்திரநிலை, s. The arrangement of rules in grammar, or other scientific or literary works; being of four kinds: 1. ஆற்றொழுக்கு, rules following each other in a regular order. (See ஆறு.) 2. சிங்க நோக்கு, rules having reference to those preceding and following. (See சிங்கம்.) 3. தவளைப்பாய்த்து, a rule referring to the next but one preceding or succeeding. (See தவளை.) 4. பருந்தின்வீழ்வு, a rule referring to several other rules distant from each other. See பருந்து. சூத்திரப்பா, s. [com. நூற்பா.] A simple, easy kind of metre, a species of அகவல். being of a didactic or prosaic metre, adapted to treatises of instruction. The நன்னூல், திவாகரம், பிங்கலந்தை and other works are written in this style. சூத்திரப்பதிமை--சூத்திரப்பாவை--சூத் திரப்பிரதிமை, s. A puppet moved by springs, strings, &c. 2. Creatures--human especially--as influenced by the Supreme Being in all their actions. சூத்திரப்பதிமையாட்டுகிறவன், appel. n. A puppet player. 2. (fig.) A subordinate who having gained the mind of his superior directs it at his own pleasure. சூத்திரப்புறனடை, s. Note appended to a rule, &c., ina literary or scientific work. சூத்திரப்பெட்டி, s. A box whose lock is a puzzle. சூத்திரமாட்ட, inf. To put the machine in operation. (c.) சூத்திரமாயிருக்க, inf. To be in the form of a rule, a text, a mystery or contrivance. சூத்திரமானகனவு, s. Ingenious theft, artful fraud. சூத்திரர், s. Artificers, mechanics, engineers, architects, carpenters, &c., தச்சர் முதலானோர். 2. See சூத்திரன். சூத்திரம்வைக்க, inf. To contrive plans. சூத்திரவேலை, s. An ingenious piece of mechanism. See சூட்சமானவேலை. சூத்திரவிருத்தி, s. An explanation of a part of the தொல்காப்பியம். சூத்திரி, s. A mechanist. (p.) 20)

tṭai (p. 222) s. Hinderance, obstacle, impediment, interruption, விக்கினம். 2. Objection, விரோதம். 3. Mail, coat of mail, கவசம். 4. A check, whatever restrains or keeps things in their place, or prevents them from running off--as a linch pin, a catch. &c., பிடிப்பு. 5. A bar or bolt of a door or gate, a guard, watch, &c., அடைப்பு. 6. A weight to balance the vessel containing what is to be weighed, தடையம். (c.) தடைகட்ட, inf. To restrain, check, &c., by magical incantations--as a cobra. 2. To put the தடை weight in the scale. தடைசெய்ய, inf. To stop, to hinder, to restrain. 2. To confine, to arrest. தடைசொல்ல, inf. To object to, to protest against. தடைதீர்க்க--தடைநீக்க, inf. To clear away obstacles. தடைபட, inf. To be hindered, to be detained or retarded. தடைபண்ண--தடைபடுத்த, inf. To interpose obstacles, to hinder. 2. To arrest, to confine. 3. To stop, to exclude, as a porter. 4. To interdict possession --as a owner. தடைபோட, inf. To put a catch, a pin, a bolt, &c., to prevent a thing from falling. தடைமோதிரம், s. A narrow ring worn on the finger, as a defence to a larger. தடையற--தடையில்லாமல், [adverbially.] Freely, without hinderance, without objection, at liberty. தடையறுக்க, inf. To dissolve magic spells on fish, &c., by counter charms, &c., 2. To obviate or remove difficulties. தடையுண்ண, inf. To be hindered. தடைவிடுவிக்க, inf. To remove a check or restraint by magic spells. 21)

tīr (p. 243) கிறது, ந்தது, தீரும், தீர, v. n. To end, terminate, he consummated, completed, முடிய. 2. To cease as pain or disease; terminate as a curse or its effects, நீங்க. 3. To be determined, decided, settled, as a law-suit or quarrel; to be passed as a sentence, தீர்மானமாக. 4. To be performed or completed as a duty; to be perfected, finished, நிறைவேற. 5. To leave, quit, cease, pass way, ஓய. 6. To be long, remote, to extend, நீள. 7. To be exhausted, used up, consumed, அற. 8. To expire as the allotted punishment for past deeds by the suffering and enjoyment of the soul, to be expiated as sin; to end as transmigration by absorption in the deity, ஊழொழிய. 9. v. a. (கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், தீர.) To polish or grind gems, clean gems, சா ணைதீர. 1. To fire off a cannon or musket, வெடிதீர. 11. To dye, stain, tinge, imbue with color, சாயந்தீர. 12. To finish, as the interlude between the stanzas in singing, playing, dancing, beating time, &c., தாளந் தீர. 13. To levy duty, assess a tax, &c. சுங்கந்தீர. 14. To solve a problem or make any mathematical calculation, கணக் குத்தீர. (c.) 15. (R.) To draw out in a line, as பார்தீர, to draw out troops in ranks. எனக்குவரத்தீராது. I cannot come. அவர்கள் பலவந்தம்செய்ததனால் தீராதென்று கொடு டுக்கவேண்டியிருந்தது. By their pressing (he said) it will not cease; it is necessary to give--Note தீராது, in such cases has a peculiar meaning. தாளந்தீர்ந்தான். He finished a tune. அதற்குவர்ணந்தீர்ந்தான். He painted it. இவன்தீர்ந்தசாமி. He is a brave fellow; (lit.) a brave god. (In irony.) தீர்கடை, s. The last end of a thing, termination, conclusion, முடிவு. 2. Absoluteness, entireness, முழுமை. தீர்ந்தகணக்கு. A settled account. தீர்ந்தகள்ளன், s. A finished rogue, a thorough villain, desperate thief. தீர்ந்தசரக்கு, s. (neg. தீராதசரக்கு.) Goods on which duty is paid. 2. Goods bargained for. தீர்ந்தபட்சம், s. The final settlement of accounts, disputes, &c. தீர்ந்தவன், s. A skilful, experienced man; an adept. (Commonly in a bad sense.) தீர்ந்தவேலை, s. A finished work. பட்டைதீர, inf. To give sides to a gem, to a piece of timber, or to a stone, in cutting or polishing. சாயந்தீர்கிறவன், s. A dyer. நவைதீருமாகமம், s. The faultless Agamas. (p.) தீர, inf. [used adv.] Altogether, entirely, perfectly, absolutely, thoroughly, completely, முழுவதும். தீரப்படித்தவனொருவனுமில்லை. There is none perfect in his studies. தீரமறக்க, inf. To forget entirely, altogether. தீராமை, v. noun. (neg.) That which cannot be obviated. தீராநோய்--தீராவியாதி, s. An incurable disease. தீராப்பழி, s. An unpardonable injury. 2. Implacable enmity. தீராவழக்கு, s. A law-suit or dispute which cannot be settled easily. தீராவழக்குக்குத்தெய்வமேசாட்சி.
