A mental appropriation or the assignment of various parts of the body to tutelary divinities, by touching the several parts, and applying sacred ashes, accompanied with incantations, according to the usual mode of Hindu worship; ex. நியாஸ, arrangement. Double meaning, ambiguity in words or language, இருபொருள். Wils. p. 162. UBHAYARTHAM. உபயமாதம், s. [in astrology.] The four months in which the sun is in the உபயவிராசி, equivocal or intermediate signs, viz.: march, June, September, and December, being of medial influence, உபயவிராசிமாதங்கள். உபயராசி, s. Every third sign of the zodiac considered in astrology as auspicious for building, &c. See இராசி. உபயவாதிகள், s. The plaintiff and defendant in a lawsuit, வாதிபிரதிவாதி கள். 2. The originator and defender of a controversy, தருக்கவாதியும்பிரதிவாதியும். 3. Persons secretly leaning to both parties or sides, இருதிறத்தாரையுஞ்சார்ந்துநிற்போர். உபயவோசை, s. An imitative, reiterated sound--as மடமடெனக்குடிக்கி றான், he drinks with a gurgling sound. 20) *

uluppai (p. 66) s. (For.) Presents of fruits, grain, &c., made to a temple, a wedding house, &c., கோயில்முதலியவற்றிற்கனுப்புங்காணிக் கை. 2. Supplies of fruits, rice, &c., furnished to a great person on his journey, பெரியவர்க்களிக்குமூண்பண்டம். 3. Supplies of vegetables, &c. to a dependant, அடைந்தோ ர்க்களிக்குமூண்பண்டம். உம்பர்கோன்வைத்தஉலுப்பையென. As the present of fruits offered by the king of the Devas-- (வருணகுலா.) உலுப்பைகட்ட, inf. To send a present to a great person in order to gain his favor. உலுப்பைகொடுக்க, inf. To give a supply to an inferior. உலுப்பைப்பை, s. A bag containing provisions to be conveyed to a superior person. 23)

ulai (p. 66) s. A smith's forge, or furnace, கொல்லனுலை. 2. A fireplace for cooking, a hearth, நெருப்புள்ளவடுப்பு. 3. A pot of water set on the fire, or fireplace for cooking, பாகஞ்செய்யவைக்குநீருலை. உலைகட்ட, inf. To decorate the top of a pot with mango leaves and set it on the fireplace with water to receive the rice that is to be boiled and distributed among religious mendicants, or offered in the temple, பொங்கற்பானைக்குமா விலைசெருகியகயிறுகட்ட. உலைகாயவைக்க, inf. To set the rice-pot on the fire filled with water to be heated. உலைகொதிக்க, inf. To boil as water when placed on the fire for cooking, &c. உலைக்களம், s. A smith's forge, கொல்லனுலையிடம். உலைக்குறடு, s. A smith's tongs, இரும்பெடுக்குங்குறடு. உலைத்தண்ணீர்--உலைநீர், s. Water set over the fire for cooking, பாகஞ்செய்ய வைக்குந்தண்ணீர். 2. Water used by the smith in the work of the forge, இரும்பு தோய்க்குநீர். உலைத்துருத்தி, s. A smith's bellows, உலையூதுந்துருத்தி. உலைமுகம், s. A smith's furnace or the centre of the forge, கொல்லனுலையி டம். உலைமூக்கு, s. The hole in the forge in which the bellows are inserted, கொல் லனுலைநாசி. உலைமூடி, s. The cover of a pot used for heating water, உலைப்பானையின் மேல்மூடி. ஊரைவாய்மூடவுலைமூடியில்லை. There is no lid that will cover the country. உலைமூட்ட, inf. To construct a forge and make it ready for work, கொல்லனுலையாயத்தம்பண்ண. 2. To make a fire in the smith's forge, கொல்லனுலை யில்நெருப்புமூட்ட. 3. To make a fire for cooking, அடுப்புமூட்ட. உலைமூட்டினாலுண்டுலகு. If the smith construct the forge, the world will stand. உலையாணிக்கோல், s. A smith's poker, beak-iron, உலையிருப்புக்கோல். 2. A branding-iron, சுட்டுக்கோல். உலையில்வெந்தவிரும்பு, s. Iron well burnt in a smith's forge. உலையேற்ற--உலைவைக்க, inf. To set a pot on the fire, உலைப்பானையையடுப்பி லேவைக்க. அவன்என்தலைக்குஉலைவைக்கிறான். He puts a rice-pot on the fire for my head; i. e. he meditates my ruin. இன்னமுலைவைக்கவில்லை. The rice-pot has not yet been set on the fire. 28)

The irrational monkey which ate the pungent pepper-கடியரமகளிர்க்கேகைவிளக்காகி. Serving as a portable lamp to the timid sirens-கடியுண்கடவுட்கிட்டசெழுங்குரல். The red millet offered in rich profusion to the god who feeds upon it-கடிவினைமுடுகி. The wedding approaching-பழுமரக்கடியுட்புக்கான். He entered the grove of banyan trees. புதிதுண்கலவிக்கடிமகிழ்ந்தே. Rejoicing in recent conjugal pleasures- கைவளைபலியொடுங்கடியுட்சோர்ந்தவால். The bracelets (of the ascetic virgins) dropped into the beggar's bowls along with the rice. எம்மம்புகடிவிடுதும். We will soon despatch our arrows. கண்ணாடியன்னகடிமார்பன். One whose breast glitters like a crystal-கடிநகர், s. A city surrounded by guards. கடிமாலை, s. A fragrant flowergarland. கடிமுரசு, s. The sounding drum. கடிமுனைப்பகழி, s. A sharp-pointed arrow. விழாக்கடி, s. The splendid scene of the festival. 45) *

kiṭai (p. 109) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To be obtained, to come to one, to be realized, found; to come into one's possession, to turn to account, அடைய. With the agent in the dative, and the object in the nominative--as எனக்கொருபுஸ்்தகங்கிடைத்தது; lit. a book has come to me; i.e. I have obtained a book. 2. To encounter, to be confronted with--as warriors; to oppose, எதிர்க்க. In the first sense, the verb is commonly used in the neuter gender. எனக்குப்பாக்கியங்கிடைத்தது. I have become rich or happy. I have had prosperity. வழுக்கிவிழுகையில் ஊன்றுகோல்போல் நீ கிடைத் தாயே. You have offered yourself to me as a prop--as a walking-stick to one who slips and is ready to fall. 18)

kirakam (p. 109) s. A house, a mansion, or palace, வீடு, Wils. p. 295. GRUHA. 2. A planet, கோள். Wils. p. 34. GRAHA. The planets in the Hindu system are nine, called நவக் கிரகம், viz.: 1. ஆதித்தன் or ஞாயிறு, the sun. 2. சோமன் or திங்கள், the Moon. 3. அங்காரகன் or செவ்வாய், Mars. 4. புதன், Mercury. 5. பிரகற்பதி--பிரகஸ்பதி or வியாழன், Jupiter. 6. சுக்கிரன் or வெள்ளி, Venus. 7. சனி, Saturn. 8. இராகு, Caput draconis. 9. கேது, Cauda draconis. The last two are considered visible in eclipses of the sun and moon, இராகு being, black, and கேது red. (See under கோள்.) 3. Relation in the order of time between a vocal and an instrumental sound -- the one immediately preceding or immediately following the other; one of the ten தாளப்பிரமாணம். அவனைக்கிரகம்பிடித்தாட்டுகிறது. An evil planet is exerting its influence on him. கிரகக்கழிப்பு, v. noun. Dispelling the evil influences of planets by appropriate ceremonies, கிரகசாந்தி. கிரகங்கழிக்க, inf. To perform a ceremony to dispel disease, &c., supposed to be induced by a malignant planet, in which clay images, made for the occasion representing the planets to be appeased, are worshipped, offerings of fruits, &c., being presented, and then all cast out in a cross road, கிரகசாந்திசெய்ய. கிரகசாத்திரம், s. Science of the planets. கிரகசாந்தி, s. A ceremony to counteract or mitigate the malignant effects of planets on one's person or affairs, கிரகக் கழிப்பு. கிரகசாந்திபண்ண, inf. To perform ceremonies for counteracting the evil effects of planets. கிரகசாரம்--கிரககதி, s. Planetary motion. 2. Planetary ephemeris. 3. The phenomena of the planets in their process. 4. Ill luck (Rott.) அவனைப்பிடித்தகிரகசாரவேளைஅப்படிப்பண்ணிற் று. He acted according to his ill fate. கிரகசெபம், s. Incantations offered to the planets deprecating their bad influences, கிரகத்துக்குச்செய்யுஞ்செபம். கிரகசித்திரம், s. Private family affairs, family troubles, &c., வீட்டுக்காரியம். கிரகச்சுற்று, s.
