அக்கினி
akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. When the 9th or 11th occurs on Saturday. 6. When the 12th occurs on Sunday. 18) *
அடு
aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். She is a suitable woman for him. ஒரு சொல்லிரண்டுமூன்று நான்கெல்லை முறைய டுக்கும். The same word will be repeated twice, thrice, or four times. (Nun.) அடாதது, appel. n. That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To reiterate. அடுத்ததண்டனை, s. Deserved punishment. அடுத்ததின்றன்மையான்மாவாகும். The associations of the soul determine its character. (In வீராகமம்.) அடுத்தவீடு, s. The next house. அடுத்தார், s. Adherents, relations, சேர்ந்தார். அடுத்தாற்போலே. Very high, next to, near. அடுத்திருந்து கழுத்தறுக்க, inf. To kill one by treachery. அடுத்துவர, inf. To follow closely, come immediately after, in time or place, நெருங்கிவர. 9)

atikam (p. 10) s. Much, மிகுதி. 2. Abundance, plenty, பொலிவு. Wils. p. 22. AD'HIKA. 3. Pre-eminence, மேன்மை. 4. (p.) Gain, profit, இலாபம். 5. Name of a tree, குருக்கத்தி. 6. Army, படை. அதிகப்பட, inf. To exceed, surpass, excel, be above mediocrity, predominate, increase, மிஞ்ச. See படு. அதிகப்படுத்த, inf. To promote, enhance, aggravate, further, facilitate, மிகச்செய்ய. அதிகப்பற்று, s. What is taken in excess. அதிகப்பிரசங்கம், s. Talking proudly, extravagantly or too much. 2. Sauciness, sulkiness. 3. Insubordinate talk. அதிகப்பிரசங்கி, s. A mischievous person. அதிகமாதம், s. An intercalated month, occurring once in six years. அதிகன், s. A chief personage. 2. God the Supreme Being. 48) *

To be aggravated, excessive, superior, (in rank, quality, authority, learning, &c.) to preponderate, predominate, விசேஷிக்க. 3. To be the theme of a section or chapter, சிறக்க; ex அதிகாரம். வியாதியதிகரிக்கிறது. The sickness increases. அதிகரிக்கை--அதிகரிப்பு, v. noun. Increasing, improvement, surpassing, &c., மிகுகை. 49)

Disposition, nature, பண்பு; ex அதி, et காரம். அதிகாரஞ்செல்ல, inf. To extend authority. 2. To take effect. அதிகாரத்தலைவன், s. A chief, ruler. அதிகாரப்புறனடை, s. Explanatory notes on a chapter in a literary work. அதிகாரவுரை, s. One of the fourteen subdivisions of விருத்தியுரை. அதிகாரன்--அதிகாரி, s. Superintendent, director, ruler, master, one in authority, a superior, மேல்விசாரணைக் காரன். அதிகாரி--அதிகாரிகன் s. [in grammar.] One of the eleven subjects treated of in the introduction of a book, கற் போன். (See பாயிரம்.) 2. [in philosophy, literature, &c.] The persons, for whom a work is written, as it regards competency, eligibility, worthiness, &c., as the ஞானநூல் for such as act up to the prescribed rules. The persons are three, கருமகாண்டி, பத்திகாண்டி, ஞானகாண்டி, who are the principal, and the following eight who are subordinates, கருமி, முமூட்சு, அப்பியாசி, அனுபவி, ஆரூடன், விவேகி, விரத்தன், தேவகதியன். 54) *

appiyācam (p. 18) s. Exercise, practice, application, custom, பரீட்சை. Wils. p. 58. AB'HYASA. எனக்கப்பியாசமில்லை, I have no practice, no experience. அப்பியாசமாய்போதல், v. noun. Becoming acquainted, accustomed, habituated. அப்பியாசி, s. A practiser, one who accustoms himself to any exercise, பயிற்சியுள்ளோன். அப்பியாசிக்க, inf. To practise, exercise one's self, பழக. amr (p. 19) s. War, fighting, strife, with all the din of war, போர். 2. Wall around a fort, மதில். 3. Rage, fury, crisis of a disease, the violence or paroxysm of a fever, delirium, உக்கிரம். (p.) அமரர், s. Foes, enemies, பகை வர். (p.) அமராட--அமரியற்ற, inf. To fight, war. See ஆடு and இயற்று. அமராபரணன், s. An undaunted hero, one who considers his wounds received in close action as ornaments. (நன்னூல்.) அமர்க்களம், s. [impr. அமக்களம்.] Field of battle, போர்க்களம் 2. A confused noise, stir, bustle, tumult, agitation, conviviality, ஆரவாரம். விருந்தமர்க்களம், s. Stir and bustle, as talking, cooking, going out and coming in. வேளாண்மையமர்க்களம், s. Stir and bustle of harvest. 21)

arngku (p. 22) கிறேன், அரங்கினேன், வேன், அரங்க, v. n. To become depressed, lowered, pressed down, அழுந்த. (p.) அரங்க, inf. [used adverbially.] Thoroughly, entirely. (p.) மரத்தையரங்கத்தறி. Prune the tree thoroughly. நூலரங்கக்கற்றோர். Those who are well versed in a science. அரங்கல், v. noun. Becoming depressed, lowered, pressed down. 41)
