aṉṟu (p. 34) s. That day, then, any time but the present, அந்நாள். 2. (The third person masc. sing. of the defective verb, அல்.) It is not (that, but something else), அல்லது. 3. An expletive, அசைச் சொல்--as, ஆயதன்றே; for ஆயது, it happened. 4. [in poetry.] அன்று, is used for அன்றி--as, நாளன்றுபோகி, for நாளன்றிப்போகி. அன்றன்று. Daily, every day.-Note. In the high dialect, words which imply time and end in று or டு, are made adjectives by changing the preceding ன், or ண், into ற், or ட், and உ, into ஐ--as அன்று, is made அற்றை, இன்றுஇற்றை; also ஆண்டு-ஆட்டை, yearly. அன்றாடம், adv. āṟṟu (p. 43) கிறேன், ஆற்றினேன், வேன், ஆற்ற, v. a. To cool, refresh, குளிரச்செய்ய. 2. To assuage, appease, alleviate, soothe, console, compose, lull, mitigate, தணிக்க. 3. To slack, loosen what is tied or twisted, முறுக்குத்தளர்த்த. (c.) 4. (p.) To do, act, perform a duty, செய்ய. 5. To bear a weight, தாங்க. 6. To carry, or sustain a burden or calamity, பொறுக்க.--Note. This verb is sometimes used impersonally--as இந்த வழியென்னாலேயாற்றாது. I cannot get along this road. ஆற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Greatly, exceedingly, மிகுதியாய். அமிழ்தினுமாற்றவினிதே. One who perversely persists in application for aid through poverty, one past shame, an insatiable wretch. ஆற்றாத்தனம், s. Insatiableness. ஆற்றாப்பட்சம், s. What cannot be borne, intolerableness--as ஆற்றாமை. ஆற்றாமை, neg. v. noun. Inability to bear--as excessive hunger, pain, &c., சகிக்கக்கூடாமை. 2. Impatience, பொறா மை. 3. Voracity, voraciousness, insatiableness, திருத்தியின்மை. ஆற்றார், s. Foes, opponents, rivals, those who envy one, பகைவர். 2. The poor, the afflicted, தரித்திரர். (p.) ஆற்றிக்கொடுக்க, inf. ikẕ (p. 45) --இகழு, கிறேன், இகழ்ந்தே ன், வேன், இகழ, v. a. To contemn, scorn, defame, reproach, revile, disdain, நிந்திக்க. இகழாவிகழ்ச்சி, v. noun. Irony, satire. இகழ்வார், s. Scorners, gain-sayers, revilers, opponents, நிந்திப்பவர். இகழ்ச்சி, v. noun. Dispraise, censure, contumely, defamation, நிந்தை. 2. Meanness, baseness, inferiority, இழிவு. 3. An equal, that which is in opposition as a rival, a competitor, an opponent, the opposite party in games or trials of ability or strength, எதிரி. 3. Distinguishing marks or signs, அசாதாரணதருமம். 4. Direction, course, tendency, குறிப்பு. 5. Intention, purpose, the object in view, motive, எண்ணம். 6. Means, ability, expedient, contrivance, ஏது. 7. Seasonable opportunity, convenient time, சமயம். (c.) அவ்விடம்போக உனக்கிலக்குச்சொல்லுவேன். I will give you some marks by which you may find your way there. உனக்கிவனேயிலக்கு. He is a match for you. இலக்குப்பார்க்க, inf. To take aim, இலட்சியம்பார்க்க. இலக்குவைக்க, inf. To take aim in shooting. 2. (fig.) To wait for opportunity--generally to do evil. 3. To act covertly through another in doing evil to any one, making him appear as the principal.

iḷkkri (p. 56) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To relax, become inattentive, weary, or negligent in action, duty, &c., to slacken, தளர. 2. To yield before an opponent or rival, to lose in a race or trial of strength, தாழ. 3. To become dispirited, disheartened, &c., எளிமையாக. 4. To become intimidated, to fear, அஞ்ச. (c.) 3)

To chatter, to babble, to jabber, to talk in vain, பிதற்ற. 4. To roar, முழங்க. கத்திக்கத்தித்தொண்டையடைத்துப்போயிற்று. I am grown hoarse by talking so much. நாய்க்குப்பயந்துகுரங்குகத்துகிறது. The monkey chatters for fear of the dog. காக்கைகத்துகின்றது. The crow caws. அவன்கழுதைபோலேகத்துகிறான். He brays like an ass. அணில்கத்துகிறபடியால்சமீபத்திலேபாம்பிருக்கவே ண்டும். The screaching of the squirrels indicates the proximity of a snake. மாரித்தவளைபோலேயேன்கத்துகிறாய். Why do you croak like a frog in the rainy season? --said of one who talks too much, or importunes unceasingly. கத்து, v. noun. Crying, bawling, கூப்பிடுகை. 2. Chattering, unmeaning or idle talk, vain babbling, nonsense, mere declamation, பிதற்றுகை.--Note. Exalted devotees use this term concerning the opinions, &c., of other sects or of those of the same sects, but inferior to themselves. சமயக்கத்து, s. The arguments or wrangling of religious disputants. 2. Religious tenets exclusive of the sublimer or experimental parts. In both meanings the usage is sarcastic, spoken by opponents or by those who have arrived at an exalted degree. பொய்ந்நூலாம்அச்சமயக்கத்தினாராதரிக்கத்தெய்வ ங்கள்வைச்சமயக்கத்தினார்வாழ்வு. (Tiruvancadum) is the residence of Vishnu who appointed various gods to please wrangling fanatics. (திருவேங்.) வீண்கத்து, s. Vain, insignificant words, prating. 22) *
