akttiṇai (p. 2) s. Rules for amatory poems, &c. opp. to புறத்திணை. 2. Mental delectation, especially in love, அகத்துநிகழொழுக் கம். See அகப்பொருள். (p.) அகத்திணைப்புறம், s. as அகப்புறப் பொருள் or கைக்கிளையும் பெருந்திணையும். Voluptuous desire on the part of one only in sexual intercourse. (p.) 4) *
அகத்தியன்
akattiyaṉ (p. 2) --அகஸ்தியன், s. A poet and sage celebrated in the Ramayanam, Skandam and other works of antiquity. He is regarded as the former of the Tamil language which he is said to have learned of Skanda the son of Siva. He is also the reputed author of several works, still extant, in whole or in part, in the Tamil language; such as, a Grammar, Materia Medica, a work on Astrology, Astronomy, and several essays on the unity of the divine being, as opposed to the popular system of polytheism, &c. He is regarded as the son of both Mythra and Varuna by Urvasi; is represented to be of very short stature, and to have been born in a water jar. He is famed for having compressed and swallowed the ocean, for the sake of the celestials. Other wonderful stories are also told of him, and received with undoubted credence. He is considered as the regent of the star Canopus, குறுமுனி. Wils. p. 5. AGASTYA. அகத்தியர்குழம்பு, s. A famous compound cathartic. See குழம்பு. 6)
அகப்பாட்டுறுப்பு
akppāṭṭuṟuppu (p. 2) s. The twelve members of அகப்பொருள் or அகத்திணை, viz. 1. இயல்பகத்திணை. Method of defining a thing or showing its nature, quality, &c. 2. வகையகத்திணை. Amplification, or detailing at large what has been said briefly. 3. பொதுவகத்திணை. The rule for summing up or recapitulating. 4. சிறப்பகத்திணை. The rule for discriminating, or explaining the difference of things. 5. உவமவகத்திணை. The rule for illustrating a subject by metaphors, comparisons, &c. 6. புறநிலையகத்திணை. The rule for exemplifying a subject by examples. 7. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை. The rule for elucidating a circumstance by its opposite. 8. காரண or கருவியகத்திணை. Showing the condition or quality of a thing by its orginal cause. 9. காரியவகத்திணை. Proving a thing by its effects. 1. காரகவகத்திணை. The rule for relating an action, event, &c., to which belong the following:-- 1. செய்பவன், who. 2. செய்தொழில், what. 3. கருவிகள், by what helps. 4. பயன், why. 5. இடம் or நிலம், where. 6. காலம், when. 7. திறன், in what manner or how. 11. முன்னவையகத்திணை. The rule for foretelling events from signs. 12. பின்னவையகத்திணை. The rule for foretelling the consequences of any action. (p.) 17)

akm (p. 2) s. Interior, inside, within, உள். அகக்கணு, s. In anatomy, inner tuberosity, அந்தப்பர்வகம். அகக்காழ்--அகங்காழ், s. The inside, solid part of timber, the heart of a tree. அகதேசி, s. [vul. அரதேசி.] A religious mendicant in his own country-used in opposition to பரதேசி. அகநிலை, s. The self-existent God, கடவுள். 2. Inside, உள்நிலை. அகவிதழ், s. Inner petals as found in the lotus and some other flowers; ex இதழ். (p.) 25)

akm (p. 2) s. House, dwelling, மனை. அகத்தடியாள்--அகவாட்டி, s. A wife. 2. A female domestic. அகத்தார், s. Those of one's own family friends, relatives; opp. to புறத்தார். அகமுடையான், s. A householder. 2. A landholder. 3. A caste man. அகம்படியார், s. A caste among the Hindus formerly employed as servants in the palace and in temples. 26)

akam (p. 2) s. Mind, heart, will, one's self, மனம். அகத்துறுப்பு, s. Qualities of the mind of heart, as kindness, mercy. 2. Internal organs, &c., opp. to புறத்து றுப்பு. (p.) அகமகிழ்ச்சி--அகமலர்ச்சி, s. Pleasure, joy, inward happiness, expansion of the mind. அகம்பிரமம், s. Self-importance, self-will. 2. Pride. 28) *
அக்கினி
akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. A kind of arrow, ஓரத்திரம், (c.) அக்கினியோகம், s. An inauspicious conjunction of the days of the week with the tithi திதி, as follows: 1. When the 5th or 11th tithi, Lunar day (திதி) occurs on Monday. 2. When the 5th tithi occurs on Wednesday. 3. When the 6th or 9th occurs on Thursday. 4. When the 8th or 1th occurs on Friday. 5. When the 9th or 11th occurs on Saturday. 6. When the 12th occurs on Sunday. 18) *

acā (p. 6) s. Weakness, faintness, த ளர்ச்சி. (p.) அசாஅத்தானுற்றவருத்தம், distress from lassitude. (In நாலடி, சுற்றந்தழால்.) அசாவாமை, s. Vigor as opposed to faintness, as தளர்ச்சியின்மை. 13) *
அஞ்சு
añcu (p. 7) கிறேன், அஞ்சினேன், வேன், அஞ்ச, v. a. [used with the dative, sometimes with the accusative.] To fear, dread, பயப்பட, as அவனுக்கஞ்சுகிறேன், I fear him; அவனையஞ்சினான். He feared him. அஞ்சல், v. noun. Fearing, dreading, பயப்படல், Also the optative, வியங் கோண்முற்று. 2. Defeat, தோல்வி. அஞ்சாப்பட்டயம், s. [prov.] A certificate from the king, formerly inscribed on metal, clearing a man from the charge of guilt and re-establishing his rights as a citizen; a writ of authority, a security against oppression or ill-treatment. 3. A passport or writ of protection in passing through a country, தத்துவபரிபாலனபத்திரம். அஞ்சாமை, neg. v. noun. Fearlessness, கலங்காமை. 44)

aṭr (p. 7) s. Closeness, crowdedness, செறிவு. 2. Pressing, oppressing, urging, நெருக்குகை. 3. A thin and flat plate of metal, &c., தகடு. (p.) அடரடிபடரடி, s. Close onset, desperate fighting, hard scuffle--some falling and others treading on them, &c.; confusion as from trees beaten down in a storm, முற்றுமழிக்கை. 66)

aṭr (p. 7) --அடரு, கிறேன், அடர்ந் தேன், வேன், அடர, v. n. To be close together, thick, crowded--as trees, stones, men, &c., நெருங்க. 2. To fight with, பொர. 3. To follow in close succession, நெருங்கித்தொடர. (p.) அடரார், s. Foes, பகைவர். (p.) அடர்ச்சி, v. noun. [impr. அடர்த்தி.] Closeness of trees, the hair, the threads in linen, the lines in a book, &c., நெருக்கம். அடர்த்திப்பலகை, s. [prov.] A thick plank. அடர்ந்தேற்றம்--அடர்ந்தேற்றி, s. [prov.] Great vigor, oppression, force, violence, கொடுமை. அடர்பு--அடர்வு, v. noun. Thickness, closeness, நெருக்கம். 2. Thinness, flatness, being the qualities of a plate of metal, ஐமை. 3. Thin plate of metal, &c., அச்சத்தகடு. 4. Close succession, நெருங்கித் தொடர்கை. அடர்ப்பம், s. [prov.] Thickness, closeness, நெருக்கம். 67)
