akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. AGNI. அக்கினிகணம், s. The same as தீக்கணம், an inauspicious measure. See கணம். (p.) அக்கினிகர்ப்பம், s. A spark. 2. A crystal with fabulous qualities. 3. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. To tread on fire, one of the thirty-two kinds of selftorture. அக்கினிமூலை, s. The south-east region. அக்கினியாதேயம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம், sacrifices. அக்கினியாஸ்திரம், s. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

aṟm (p. 33) --அறன், s. Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. A charitable man. 2. A sage, an anchorite. 3. A Brahman. 4. Argha. இல்லறம், s. Domestic life. துறவறம், s. Religious or ascetic life. ஈரறம், s. The two species of life above-mentioned. 47)

A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. A poetic contraction of ஆறு, way or manner--as, யான்வந்தவாசென்றியம்புதியேல், if you will go and give information of my arrival. 16. A poetic name of the ஆச்சாமரம். 17. One of the letters on which to exercise the voice in singing, running through the notes of the octave--a musical mode, இசையிலோசை. 18. A prefix to Sanscrit words--as, ஆகன் னம், ஆசட்சு. ஆ கெட்டேன். Ah! I am undone. ஆ கொடுப்பாய். Oh! thou wouldst give thyself--i. e. thyself and thy family--to Yama the god of death; [vul.] generally used by women. ஆதீண்டுகுற்றி--ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, s. A rubbing post or stone for cows, erected as a meritorious deed of charity. ஆப்பி--ஆமயம், s. Cow-dung, கோமயம். காட்டா, s. A wild cow. காரா, s. Buffalo, (lit.) a black cow or ox. 16)

uṭai (p. 59) s. Wealth, செல்வம். 2. Owning, belonging to, being owned, possessed, உடைமை. This word is conjugated as a symbolic verb, in the various inflections of which, or in the abstract form உடைமை, it chiefly obtains; when used as a qualifying prefix in its simple form, except as a participle, it requires the reduplication of the hard letters. பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன், s. The patron of a poem to whom it is addressed. 2. The hero of a poem. உடைப்பெருஞ்செல்வர், s. Those possessed of great wealth. உடைத்து. Third person sing. neut. of a symbolic verb often used appellatively with ஆகுதல். It has, possesses, belongs to, is subject to. இது அவற்குடைத்து. This belongs to him. மகிமையுடைத்தானமோட்சம். Glorious bliss. அச்சாணியன்னாருடைத்து. (The world) possessing persons as important (to society) as the linch pin is to a chariot. (குறள்.) யாக்கைஅழிவுடைத்தாயிருக்கின்றது. The body is perishable. உடைத்தானவன், s. A proprietor, possessor, one subject to.--Note. This form, though a solecism, is allowed. உடைய. The participle of the verb, (1) used as a form of the sixth or possessive case, ஆறாம்வேற்றுமைச்சொல்லுரு பு--as என்னுடையபொருள், my property. 2. Affixed to nouns it governs the accusative case expressed or understood--as மரத்தையுடையவன், the owner of the tree. Sometimes it is annexed to the dative --as பொருளுக்குடையவன், an heir. என்னுடையது. It is mine. மணமுடையபூ, s. A fragrant flower. மரத்தினுடையகொம்பு, s. The branch of a tree. உடையவன்--உடையான், (third pers. masc. sing.) He has, he possesses, (often used appellatively). 2. appel. n. He who has, he who possesses. (a) the owner, the possessor, (b) the Supreme Being, (c) a rich man, (d) a king, a lord, (e) the master of the house. உடையார், s. The rich, the wealthy, the opulent. 2. [prov.] A district officer. 3. A title among some tribes of Hindus. உடையார்முன்னில்லார்போல். Like the poor in the presence of the wealthy. ஆஸ்திக்குடையவன், s. An heir. மண்ணுடையான், s. A potter, குயவன். ஆஸ்தியுடையவன், s. A proprietor. ஊருடையார், s. A district officer, a registrar of land, &c. வீட்டுடையான், s. The master of a house, the husband. 99)

uttamam (p. 60) s. Perfection, virtue, excellence, goodness, நன்மை. 2. The chief, principal, or best of the kind--whether persons or things; eminence, superiority, nobleness, uprightness, sincerity, மேன்மை. Wils. p. 141. UTTAMA. உத்தமஞானம், s. The knowledge of good and the soul. உத்தமதானம், s. Reward of merit, gifts of the highest kind--as gifts obtained in the paths and virtue and bestowed on the meritorious, நல்லோர்க்கீ கை. See தானம். உத்தபட்சம், s. First rate, kind, class, &c., முதற்பட்சம். உத்தமபரி, s. The கொத்துமல்லி plant, Coriandrum sativum, L. 2. A present, a gift, உபகாரம். உபயகுலம், s. Two castes, two tribes, one born of two castes. உபயகுலசுத்தம், s. Purity in both the ancestral lines. உபயகோமுகி, s. A cow in the act of calving, the donation of which to a Brahman, when the moon is south of the equator, is regarded as very meritorious (lit.) two-faced, or looking both ways, கன்றின்றலையுதயமாய்நிற்கும்பசு. உபயாத்தம்--உபயார்த்தம், s. [in astrology.] The four months in which the sun is in the உபயவிராசி, equivocal or intermediate signs, viz.: march, June, September, and December, being of medial influence, உபயவிராசிமாதங்கள். உபயராசி, s. Every third sign of the zodiac considered in astrology as auspicious for building, &c. See இராசி. உபயவாதிகள், s. The plaintiff and defendant in a lawsuit, வாதிபிரதிவாதி கள். 2. The originator and defender of a controversy, தருக்கவாதியும்பிரதிவாதியும். 3. Persons secretly leaning to both parties or sides, இருதிறத்தாரையுஞ்சார்ந்துநிற்போர். உபயவோசை, s. uẕai (p. 67) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [col. for உழத்து.] To earn, gain by labor, procure by industry, to acquire, வருந்தியீட்ட. 2. v. n. To labor hard, toil, strive, drudge, ply, வேலையிற்பிர யாசப்பட. 3. (p.) To sound--as talk, buzz, clamor, இரைய. 4. To suffer, endure hardships, to be afflicted, துன்பமுற. கல்வியிலேமிகவுமுழைக்கிறான்.
