camayam (p. 162) s. A convenient, suitable or proper time; leisure, convenience, opportunity, தருணம். 2. Time, season, occasion, juncture of time; emergency, extremity, காலம். 3. Any religious persuasion, faith or system, மார்க்கம். (c.) W. p. 894. SAMAYA. --Note.. There are twelve principal religious systems, of which six are approved and six rejected by the Saiva sect. 1. உட் சமையம், or the six systems considered orthodox by the Saivas are. 1. வைரவம், making Bhairava supreme. 2. வாமம், regarding the female principle in nature, as the primeval form of deity, and teaching the worship of the generative female organ. 3. காளாமுகம், similar to the வாமம். 4. மாவிரதம், teaching that the deity is a pure spirit. 5. பாசுபதம், similar to மாவிரதம். 6. சைவம், Saivism, which teaches that the deity is both spirit and matter; assuming forms for accomplishing his purposes. II. புறச்சமயம், or the six heterodox systems; viz.:-- 1. உலகாயதம். A species of Atheism regarding sensual gratifications as the chief good, as taught by the atheistical school of Charvaka. 2. புத் தம். Bhuddism, which rejects the notion of a Supreme being, maintains that all material existences proceed from a fortuitous combination of the four primitive elements, (earth, water, fire, and air,) and that mental phenomena are the mere results of organization. It regards Bhudd as a deified teacher and object of worship. 3. சமணம். The Jaina system which is a modification of Bhuddism, and regards Argha as the deified preceptor and object of worship. 4. மீமாஞ்சை. A system that regards Brahm as the soul of the universe. 5. பாஞ்சாரத்திரம். A system taught by Vishnu, during five successive nights. 6. பாட்டாசாரியம். The system of Battacharya whose followers regard the Vedas as god, and consider that virtuous actions of themselves result in felicity. III. Other systems derived from these twelve or in some respects similar to them are very numerous, some of them are கபாலம், சவுத்திராந்திகம், யோகசாரணம், ஆத்துமிகம், வைபாடிகம், நிகண்டவா தம், நையாயிகம், வைசேஷிகம், பதஞ்சலியம், சாங்கியம், சித்தாந்தம், வேதாந்தம், &c. The six orthodox systems among the Vaishnuvas are 1. யாதவம், that of Yádava Misra. 2. மாயாவாதம், that by Sankarachárya. 3. இரணியகர்ப்பம், that by Hiranyagarbha. 4. இராமானுசீயம், that by Rámánuja. 5. பாஸ்கரம், that by Bhaskara. 6. தத்துவவாதம், that by Mádhavácharya. சமயகருமம், s. Constancy or firmness in a religion. சந்நியாசிக்குஞ் சாதிமானஞ் சமயமானம்விடாது.... The ascetic who has relinquished every thing will not relinquish his caste or sect. சமயவாதம், s. Religious controversy. சமயவாதி, s. A disputant for religion. 2. A professor of religion. சமயாசாரம், s. The rites and ceremonies, of a religion according to a prescribed institute. 2. Religious practice, observance of rites. (c.) சமயாதீதன், s. The supreme Being-as transcending all religions, சமயங்கடந்த கடவுள். (p.) சமயி, s. pāṣaṇṭam (p. 307) s. [also பாசண்டம்.] Heresy, non-conformity to the orthodox doctrines of the Hindu faith, பாகியம். W. p. 532. PASHAN'DA. பாஷண்டன்--பாஷண்டி, s. [pl. பா ஷண்டர், பாஷண்டிகள்.] A heretic, male or female. 2. (R.) A vira- Saiva, வீர சைவன். 26) *

makā (p. 338) adj. Great, high, exalted, dignified, noble, honorable, பெருமையான. 2. Immense, prodigious, stupendous, monstrous, extreme, அளவற்ற. 3. Superior, greater, paramount, superlative, உயர்ந்த. 4. Intense, மிகுந்த.--Note. This particle is sometimes repeated to express intensity, as மகாமகாப் பட்ட, the greatest. (Beschi.) Also sometimes contracted to மக, and மா, as மகராசா, மாசனங்கள்; [ex மகத்து.] அதுமகாஅரிது. It is very difficult. அதுமகாஅபூர்வம். It is very rare. மகராசன், s. A king, அரசன். 2. A rich or great or good man, சீமான். மகராசா, s. The king, the sovereign. மகராசி, s. A rich or benevolent lady; (lit.) a queen. மகரிஷி, s. An exalted Rishi, மகாரிஷி. மகாஅவதானி, s. A person who has excellent memory. மகாகருவம்--மகாகர்வம், s. Much arrogance. 2. Ten billions. மகாகற்பம், s. The great Kalpa, consisting of a vast period, probably the life time of Bramha, or 155,52,,, solar years, after which there will be a universal destruction.--Note. By analogy it would be only 1 கற்பம் of 4,32,, each or 43,2,, years; but கற்பம் is used very indefinitely. மகாகாசம்--மகாகாயம், s. The air, or ether at large; as distinguished from கடாகாசம், or air in a pot, the atmosphere, பெருவெளி. மகாகாலம், s. A great and long period of time, sometimes used for eternity, நெடுங்காலம். மகாகிதி--மகாக்ஷிதி, s. A certain number, one thousand trillions. மகாகோணி--மகாக்ஷோணி, s. Ten trillions. மகாகோரம், s. A division of hell, or Tartarus, நரகத்தினோரிடம். மகாசகை, s. A plant bearing an unfading flower, Gomphr&oe;na globosa, வாடா மல்லிகை. W. p. 652. MAHASAHA. மகாசங்கம், s. A hundred billions. 2. A class of souls of a superior order, consisting of seventy-five millions. Of these, thirty-five millions attain liberation when the work of creation is finished. மகாமந்திரி, s. The prime minister. மகாமாயி--மகாமாரி, s. [com. மகமாயி.] A name of Durga, துர்க்கை. மகாமாயை, s. Mother of the king of the Asuras, சூரபன்மன்தாய். 2. As மாமாயை. மகாமிருகம், s. The great Meru, or golden mountain, thought to be in the middle of the Central continent. மகாயக்கியம்--மகாயாகம், s. The first order of sacrifices. It is of five kinds; 1. பிரமம், or வேதமோதல், reading and learning Vedas; 2. தெய்வம், or ஓமம்வ ளர்த்தல், kindling a sacrificial fire; 3. பூதம், or பலியீதல், fragments of food left at an oblation; 4. பிதிர், or தர்ப்பணமுடித் தல், presenting water to the manes of persons deceased; 5. மானுடம், or இரப் போர்க்குணவீதல், gifts to beggars. மகாயுகம், s. The great age, the aggregate of the four ages, 4,32, years. மகாயோசனை, s. A large number. மகாரணியம், s. A very large forest, பெருங்காடு; [ex ஆரணியம்.] மகாரதன்--மாரதன், s. [in astron.] The moment of the sun's entering Aries, the vernal equinox, but varying several days from the European computation, மேடத்திற்சூரி யன்வருகை. W. p. 651. MAHAVISHUVA. மகாவியாகிருதி, s. The three mystical words, Bhur, Bhuva and Swer, the essential part with ஓம், of the Gayatri of the Brahmans, in their daily incantations, காயத்திரிமந்திரம். மகாவிந்தம், s.
