aṭai (p. 8) s. Resort, attaining to, அ டுத்தல். 2. A kind of cake, wafer, ஓர்பணிகா ரம். 3. Cake or bread in general அப்பவருக் கம். 4. Incubation, அவயம். 5. A leaf, இலை. 6. Gravity, weight, கனம். 7. A slight support or prop, தாங்கி. 8. [in grammar.] A prefix, qualifying word, or clause, adjunct, accompaniment, அடைமொழி. In this meaning it includes உரிச்சொல் or adjectives and adverbs. (p.) 9. A pledge, கொதுவை. 1. Tribute, the king's proportion of the produce of the land whether one-sixth or one-tenth, or otherwise, நிலவிறை. (c.) அடைகாக்க--அடைகிடக்க, inf. To sit on eggs, incubate. அடைகாய், s. Betel and areca nut. அடைகொடுக்க, inf. To render the kings's share of the produce. அடைகோழி, s. A hen that sits on eggs. அடைக்காய், s. Areca nut. அடைக்குத்தகை, s. [prov.] Revenue from grain as farmed out by government. அடைச்சீட்டு, s. [prov.] Receipt for the payment of tithe or tax. அடைப்பை, s. A betel pouch, வெற் றிலைப்பை. அடைப்பைக்காரன், s. The servant who carries the betel pouch, &c. of a great person. அடையடுத்தவாகுபெயர், s. A species of metonymy, as, மருக்கொழுந்துநட் டான், he planted a twig of the absinthium, that is, the plant itself. 19)

aẕi (p. 32) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், அழிய, v. n. To decay, degenerate, perish, be corrupted, ruined, wasted, blighted, effaced, obliterated, abolished, demolished, annihilated, கெட. 2. To fail (as a promise), be frustrated as a hope, &c., be refuted, தவற. அழிகரு, s. Abortion, கருவழிவு. அழிகுட்டி, s. A miscarriage, an abortion applied chiefly to brutes--the casting of the young, வயிற்றில்மரித்தது. அழிந்தோரைநிறுத்தல், v. noun. One of the eight constituent parts of virtue, அறத்துறுப்பு. அழிபுண், s. A foul ulcer, ஆறாப் புண். (M. Dic.) அழிமதி, s. Waste, extravagance, malicious intention, கெடுபுத்தி. அழிமுதல், s. Waste of property, as of capital, principal, &c. முதலழிவு. அழிம்பு, s. [vul.] The nin-payment of a debt or the non-restoration of another's property from dishonest motives, புரட்டு. 2. Ruin, devastation, injury, damage, கேடு. என்னுடையமைக்கழிம்புபேசுகிறான். He talks of destroying my property. அழிம்புசெய்ய, inf. To damage a thing. 2. To debauch a woman. அழிம்பன், s. [vul.] A spendthrift, a profligate, ஊதாரி. 2. One who makes excuses for not paying debts, restoring property, &c., புரட்டன். அழியாதபத்தினி, s. A name of D'hurupary, the wife of the Pandu princes. அழியாமுதல், s. Property devoted or entailed in perpetuity to a temple or other charity, நிலையான ஆஸ்தி. 2. God, கடவுள். அழியாமை, neg. v. noun. Incorruption, immortality, imperishableness, கெடாமை. அழிவழக்கு, s. An unjust lawsuit, a groundless prosecution, a frivolous or groundless defence, a lost lawsuit, அநி யாயவழக்கு. கற்பழியாதபெண், s. A pure virgin. அழிகை, v. noun. Destruction, decay, ruin, சிதைவு. அழிவு, v. noun. Decay, injury, ruin, loss, desolation, the act of perishing. கேடு. 2. That which has perished of itself, கெட்டது. 3. Fault, immorality, (in a restricted sense,) deviation from rule, குற்றம். அன்றுகண்டமேனிக்கழிவில்லை. Just the same appearance as before. அழிவின்மை, neg. v. noun. Freedom from decay. அழிவுகாலம், s. The time of a universal deluge and destruction at the end of an age, யுகமுடிவு. கடையழிதல், v. noun. Suffering extremely. நிறையழிதல், v. noun. Being disheartened, dispirited, without hope. 7)

iṟu (p. 57) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To pay a debt, or tax, to liquidate, discharge debts, கடன்செலுத்த. 2. To pay unwillingly or by compulsion, to discharge a debt with difficulty, கடனிறுக்க. 3. To strain, pour off, to allow a liquid to percolate, leaving a sediment, grain, boiled rice, &c., to decant, வடிக்க. 4. (p.) To break a branch, a bow, &c.; to snap asunder, ஒடிக்க. 5. v. n. To abide, stay, tarry, தங்க. 6. To arrive at, reach, சேர. 7. To answer, say in reply, விடைகூற. இறுத்துத்தொலைக்க, inf. To discharge, to pay off. தண்டமிறுக்க, inf. To pay a fine. கடனிறுத்தல், v. noun. The divisions of a district according to the payment of the tribute, இறைக்கட்டு. இறைகுத்த, inf. To dip the finger into a fluid to ascertain its depth, விர லிறையாலளவிட. இறைகொள்ள, inf. To exact tribute, to levy taxes, திறைகொள்ள. இறைதிரிய, inf. To swerve from the rules of justice, அரசுநீதிதிறம்ப. இறைபயப்பது, appel. noun. [in rhetoric.] An indirect answer--as when one is asked if he has areca nut, he answers that he has betel, meaning that he has no areca. These modes of answering are of five kinds, விடைப்பொ ருளைத்தருவதாய்வருவது. See விடை. இறைபுரிய, inf. To hold the reins of government, அரசாட்சிசெய்ய. 2. To administer justice, நீதிசெலுத்த. இறைப்பிளவை--இறைக்கள்ளன், s. A kind of scirrhus, eruption in the finger joints or between the fingers at the roots, கையிறையில்வருமோர்புண். இறைமகள், s. A princess, a lady, இராசபுத்திரி. இறைமகன், s. A prince, a gentleman, இராசகுமாரன். 2. Skanda, முருகன். 3. Ganesa, விநாயகன். இறைமாட்சி, s. Royalty, regal dignity, royal excellencies, அரசரின்மாண்பு. இறைமாண்டார், s. Kings, those who possess regal dignity. இறைமை, s. Divinity, the divine nature, தெய்வத்தன்மை. 2. Superiority, eminence, excellence, greatness, தலைமை. 3. Royalty, dominion, government, அர சாட்சி. இறைமையாட்டி, s. A queen, அ ரசி. 2. A lady, a mistress, தலைவி. இறையனாரகப்பொருள்--இறைவ னாரகப்பொருள், s. A grammatical work from Siva, ஓரிலக்கணநூல். இறையிலி, s. One exempt from taxation, இறையிறாதவன். இறையிறுக்க, inf. To pay tribute, இறைகொடுக்க. இறையிறுக்காதவூர், s. A town free from tribute. இறையுணர்வு, s. The knowledge of God. இறையெண்ண, inf. To count by the joints or lines of the fingers, விர லிறையாலேகணக்குப்பார்க்க. இறைவன்--இறையோன், s. iḷkkārm (p. 56) s. [vul.] Indulgence, laxity, compliance; mildness, mitigation of punishment, &c., lenity, remission of a duty, tax, payment, &c., relaxation, இளகி யதன்மை. This word is specially appropriate to rational beings. சிறைகளுக்கிளக்காரங்கொடுக்கலாகாது. Slaves are not to be indulged, treated with lenity, &c. 2)

iẕukku (p. 55) கிறேன், இழுக்கினேன், வேன், இழுக்க, v. n. To deviate from rule, to swerve from, neglect the performance of duty, to fall from a higher rank, to be disgraced, தவற. 2. To slip, slide, fall, deviate from the course or path, to stumble, flinch, வழுவ. 3. To fail, or be inferior to, தாழ. 4. To err, mistake, பிறழ. 5. To be reduced in strength, to become emaciated, கெட. காரியத்திலிழுக்கிப்போனான். He has failed in his attempt. இழுக்கடிக்க, inf. To put off the time of payment, to delay payment. இழுக்கம், v. noun. Failure, deviation, swerving, shrinking, flinching from, தளர்வு. 2. Backwardness, slackness, procrastination, தாமதம். 3. Fault, defect, ஈனம். (p.) இழுக்கல், v. noun. Duty, obligation, what is proper to be done or what one is bound to do, that which is devolved on one, accountability, responsibility, கடமை. 4. Measurement, அளவு. 5. A dry measure--the மரக்கால். கடனுக்குப்பாதகனாய்ப்போனவன். One who is deeply in debt. காலைக்கடன்கழித்தல். Performing the morning devotional exercises. அதுன்மேல்விழுந்தகடன். It is your duty. பகைவரைமுதலாய்ப்பரிவதுகடன். Even enemies ought to be loved. யான்செய்யவேண்டியகடன். The duty which I ought to discharge. கடனடைக்க--கடனிறுக்க--கட ன்றீர்க்க, inf. To clear off a debt. 2. To perform an obligation, duty, &c., in general. புத்திரன்றன்கடன்றீர்த்துப்போட்டான். The child has done his duty--spoken in commendation, or with reference to the performance of some exploit, &c. கடனாக, inf. [used adverbially.] As a loan, in loan. கடனாளி, s. One who is obliged to do a thing. 2. A debtor. கடன்கட்டு--கடன்வழி, s. Doing a thing for form's sake, not cordially. கடன்கட்டாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak roughly. கடன்கழிக்க, inf. To perform a duty, to return a kindness, &c., கடமை செய்ய. 2. To perform the last funeral rites for a deceased person, either by fire or water, பிதிர்கருமஞ்செய்ய. 3. To perform private devotions as the repetitions of the மந்திரம், &c., நித்தியகருமஞ்செய்ய. 4. To do a service for one out of compliment, or for form's sake, மனமின்றிச்செய்ய. கடன்காரன், s. A debtor, கடன் பட்டவன். 2. sometimes a creditor, கடன் கொடுத்தவன். கடன்கேட்க, inf. To demand a debt. 2. To ask for a loan of money. கடன்கொடுத்தவன், s. A creditor, a loaner. கடன்சீட்டு--கடன்பத்திரம்--க டன்முறி, (s.) A bond of debt. கடன்செய்ய, inf. To do one's duty, கடமைசெய்ய. 2. To perform funeral rites, பிதிர்கருமஞ்செய்ய. கடன்திருநாள், s. A holy festival observed in fulfilment of a vow. (Besch.) கடன்பட, inf. To contract debt, be indebted, கடனுக்குள்ளாக. கடன்பற்ற, inf. To recover payment of a debt, கடனறவிட. கடன்வாங்க, inf. To borrow money, contract a debt. வாங்கினகடனைக்கொடாதவல்லாளகண்டன். . . . One who is too unyielding to pay off his debts. செய்கடன், s. A duty. 35)

To reduce payment, to pay less than the expected or stipulated sum. 2. To supply insufficiently--as food, &c. குறைத்துப்பரிமாற, inf.
