akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். [in astrology.] The male division of the lunar asterisms, observed in horoscopes, ஆண் நட்சத்திரம். ஆணெழுத்து, s. A short vowel, or a short animated consonant, குற்றெழுத்து. ஆண்கிரகம், s. In the Hindu system of astrology, any one of the three planets, Mars, Jupiter, or the Sun, ஆண் கோள். ஆண்குறி, s. Membrum virile. ஆண்கூத்து, s. A male character in the drama. ஆண்டகை, s. A king, அரசன். 2. A manly person, சிறந்தோன்; [ex தகை, befitting.] (p.) ஆண்டகைமை, s. Manliness, fortitude, inherent bravery, வீரம். (p.) ஆண்டொழில், s. Exploits, mighty deeds, heroism. (p.) ஆண்டொழின்மைந்தன், s. Arjuna, அருச்சுனன். (p.) ஆண்பறவை, s. The cock, the male of any bird, சேவல். ஆண்பனை, s. The male of the palmyra tree. ஆண்பன்றி, s. A hog, boar, ஒருத் தல். ஆண்பாடு, s. The male energy, ஆண்குணம். 2. Man's affair or work. ஆண்பாடுபெண்பாடுபட்டது. The man and woman labored. ஆண்பால், [in grammar.] The masculine gender, male sex, புல்லிங்கம். 2. Masculine qualities, ஆண்டன்மை; [ex பால், class, nature.] (p.) ஆண்பிள்ளை, s. A male child, a boy, a person of the male sex in general. 2. A man of priority, a head-man. 3. A clever man, or a man of capacity. ஆண்பிள்ளைசிங்கம், s. A bold, heroic, intrepid man, one who does bravely, signalizes himself--a term of applause, வீரன். ஆண்மகன், s. An eminent man. 2. A man. 3. A husband. 4. A son. (p.) ஆண்மரம், s. The class of trees whose interior is hard, solid and suitable for timber, உள்வயிரமுள்ளமரம். 2. The செம்மரம். ஆண்மாரி, s. A masculine woman, a scold, a termagant, an amazon. ஆண்மை, s. Manliness, courage, fortitude, intrepidity, energy, manhood. 2. Strength, vigor, virility. 3. (p.) Truth, certainty. நானென்றவாண்மை. Presumption, selfconceitedness, pedantry. ஆண்வழி, s. Family descent in the male line, any peculiarity in the male line. 26)

āytm (p. 40) s. The letter ஃ, so called from the indistinctness of its sound, or from the peculiarity and minuteness of its form. It is chiefly a consonant, but sometimes occurs as a vowel; yet it cannot be confounded with another letter, தனிநிலை. (p.) ஆய்தக்குறுக்கம், s. urimai (p. 64) s. Propriety, peculiarity, proprietorship, appropriateness, property or quality of a person or thing, உரியதன்மை. 2. Heritage, inheritance, hereditary and unalienable rights, சுதந்திரம். 3. Relationship, the ties of consanguinity, இனம். 4. Natural or correlative duty, obligation, கடமை. 5. Love, affection, intimacy, tender regard, friendship, சிநேகம். 6. Liberality, privilege of familiarity, freedom taken or permitted on the ground of relationship, friendship, acquaintance, &c., இஷ்டம். 7. Claim, right, உரித்து. 8. (p.) A wife, மனைவி. உரித்து. A symbolic verb used as a noun with meanings similar to those of உரிமை, being peculiar to a person, or thing--as duty, obligation, property, quality, &c., உரியது. 2. s. Relative duty and care as of a child to his parents, the teacher to his pupils, the Guru to his disciples, the husband to his wife, and vice versa, கடமை. 3. Affection, பட்சம் உரித்தாக்கிக்கொள்ள, inf. To appropriate to one's self, procure a right in, to make one's own, உரிமையாகச்செய்ய. 2. To secure the friendship of one, நட்பாக்கிக்கொள்ள. உரித்தாளி--உரித்தானவன், s. Proprietor, owner, heir, சுதந்திரன். 2. One near of kin, இனமானவன். சபைக்குரித்தானவன். A person entitled to a place in an assembly. என்னுடைமைக்குரித்தானவன். The heir of my property. உரிமைக்கஞ்சி--உரிமைச்சோறு, s. Food prepared for the relations of a deceased person on the day of his death. 2. The duties and obligations of near relations to perform funeral rites, and to show respect to a deceased person, பிரேதத்திற்குரியவர்கள் செய்யுங்கடமை. 2. The duty of a child to support his father in sickness or other extremity, &c., புத்திரன்பிதாவுக்குச்செய்யுங் கடமை. 3. Obligations of the heir to pay the debts of a deceased person, அவன வன்செய்யவேண்டியகடமை. உரிமைக்கட்டு, s. Consanguinity allowing a marriage connexion, இனக் கட்டுப்பாடு. 2. [prov.] Right or letters of administration to the estate of a deceased person, சுதந்திரதத்துவம். 2. Right of guardianship in a case of minority, lunacy, &c., பாத்தியம். உரிமைபாராட்ட--உரிமைகொண் டாட, inf. To own the obligations one is under to another, on the ground of consanguinity, friendship, religion, country, &c., and to act accordingly, சுதந்திரங் கொண்டாட. 2. To converse with another on the ties of friendship, consanguinity, &c., common between them either to show that such ties exist, or for social enjoyments, சம்பந்தங்கொண்டாட. உரிமைபேச, inf. To urge one's rights, claims, &c. on the ground of consanguinity, usage, occupation, previous services, acquaintance or otherwise, சுதந்திரங்காட்டிப்பேச. உரிமைப்பங்கு, s. Share of an inheritance, சுதந்திரப்பங்கு. உரிமைப்பாடு, s. Relative authority, obligation, &c., உரியகடமை. உரிமைப்பிள்ளை, s. An adopted child entitled to the property of the adopter, சுவிகாரபுத்திரன். உரிமைப்பெண், s. A female in the proper degree of consanguinity to be taken in marriage, விவாகஞ்செய்வதற் குரித்தானவள். உரிமைமண், s. [prov.] Earth thrown on a corpse at its burial, by the near relatives, பிரேதக்குழியிலுரியவர்கள்போ டுமண். உரிமையாட்சி, s. Possession or right of possession of property devolving on a child, which, had the parents been living, would have belonged to them, சுதந்திரவாட்சி. உரிமையின்மை, s. Want of right or privilege. உரிமையெடுக்க, inf. To take possession, to enjoy or claim one's share of an inheritance, produce, &c. உரிமைவழி, s. Consanguinity, lineage, ancestral connection, சம்பந்தமுறை. 2. Inheritance or right of possession from ancestors, தொன்றுதொட்டுவருஞ்சுதந்தி ரம். உரிமைவிட, inf. To give freedom to, to manumit a slave. சொல்லுரிமை, s. A fine emphatic expression. உரியது, s. That which is proper to, peculiar to, tending to, liable to, exposed to, deserved, deserving, worthy of, appropriate to, obnoxious to, உரித்தா னது. இததற்குரியசொல். This is the appropriate word for it. உரியதண்டனை, s. Condign punishment, deserved chastisement. உரியபொருள், s. The primary meaning of a passage, உரியவர்த்தம். 2. Property in which one has a peculiar right, சுதந்திரமானதிரவியம். உரியர்--உரியார்--உரியோர், s. Proprietors, உடையவர்கள். 2. Heirs, சுதந்திரர். 3. Near or responsible relations, சம்பந்த முடையார். 4. The learned, அறிஞர். அன்பிலாரெல்லாந்தமக்குரியர்அன்புடையர்என்பு முரியர்பிறர்க்கு. Those destitute of love live only to themselves, whereas they who possess it are ready to give up their lives (lit. bones) for others. (குறள்.) உரியவன்--உரியன்--உரியோன், s. Proprietor, owner, உடையவன். 2. Heir, சுதந்திரன். 3. A near relation, இனத் தான். 4. One worthy of, deserving of, தக்கவன். 5. (p.) Husband, கணவன். கொலைக்குரியவன், s. One who is worthy of death. இழவுக்குரியவன், s. One whose duty it is to perform funeral rites. எனக்குரியவன், s. One near to me by the ties of consanguinity, friendship, relation, caste, country, &c. உரியள்--உரியாள், s. A wife, மனையாள். (p.) 17)

oru (p. 83) adj. [changed from ஒன்று, which is the root.] Before vowels and sometimes before consonants, the உ often is dropped and the ஒ lengthened--as ஓரிலை, a leaf. In some connexions and with appropriate emphasis, it means sameness, singularity, peculiarity, specialness, celebrity, &c. ஒருகூடுமுடைந்தவனொன்பதுகூடுமுடைவான். . . . . He who has fabricated one bird's cage may fabricate nine. [prov.] ஒருகண்டசீராக, adv. In one uninterrupted course, monotonously, invariably, constantly. ஒருகண்டசீராகமழைபெய்கிறது. It rains without intermission. ஒருகண்டசீராகக்கூப்பிடுகிறான். He continues calling. ஒருகண்டசீராய்நடக்க. To continue unchanged. ஒருகண்ணுக்குறங்க, inf. To enjoy a short nap. ஒருகண்மூடியொருகண்விழித்தல். Partiality, especially to children. ஒருகாரியம், s. [prov.] One thing, something, a term used in calling or diverting attention, or in stating a reason, &c., in discussion. ஒருகால், s. A foot or one foot, ஒற்றைக்கால். 2. adv. [improp. ஒருக்கால்.] Once, sometime or other, for once, sometimes, ஒருமுறை. ஒருகாலிலேநிற்கிறான். He speaks a great deal, but nothing is understood. ஒருகாலேயுறுக்கிக்கொண்டுவருகிறார். He is scolding much. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாங்கொடுக்கிறது. To give all at once. ஒருகாலேயெல்லாஞ்செய்ய. Being bedridden; confinement by sickness or grief to a recumbent posture, கிடந்தகிடை. ஒருகிடையாகக்கிடத்தல். Lying still, unable or unwilling to rise. ஒருகுடி, s. The relations of one family. ஒருகுடித்தமர், s. Persons of the same family, near relatives--commonly on the paternal side, தாயத்தார். ஒருகூட்டு, s. Love on one side not yet reciprocated, love-intrigue, கைக்கிளை. ஒருதலைதுணிதல், v. noun. [in literature.] An author's choice or decision between two different sentiments found in the writings of others, 32--உத்தியி லொன்று. ஒருதலைநோவு--ஒருதலைவலி, s. Pain on one side of the head. ஒருதலைப்பாக்கு, s. [prov.] An imperfect arecanut, defective on one side. ஒருதலைவழக்கு--ஒருதலைநியாயம், s. Partiality in giving judgment, statements, descriptions, &c., leaning to one side or party, an ex-party statement. ஒருதலைவழக்குநூலினுஞ்செம்மை. The statement made by only one party in a suit is straighter than a line; i. e. one tale is good till another is told. ஒருதன்மை, s. Being of one and the same kind, ஒருவிதம். 2. Incomparableness, ஒப்பற்றதன்மை. 3. Unchangeableness, மாறாமை. ஒருதாரை, s. One edge. 2. adv. [prov.] At once, altogether, without interruption, ஒருமிக்க. ஒருதாரைக்கத்தி, s. One edged sword. ஒருத்தன், s. (fem. ஒருத்தி.) One person, one man, one only, denoting speciality, either good or bad. ஒருத்தருமில்லை. There is nobody. ஒருத்தரும்வரவில்லை. Thou only art the Lord. அவனொருத்தன்வந்தான். He only is come. 2. That fellow is come. ஒருநெல்லுப்பெருவெள்ளை, s. [prov.] A kind of rice, ஓர்வகைநெல். ஒருநேரம், s. An unseasonable time. இவனிராத்திரியொருநேரத்தில்என்வீட்டுக்குவந் தான். He came last night to my house at an unseasonable hour. ஒருபடி, adv. Tolerably, ordinarily, ஒருவாறு. 2. In some degree, to some extent, ஒருவிதம். ஒருபடிசெய்துமுடித்தார்கள். They have done it, finished it, &c. with great labor. 2. The axehandle brings ruin to its race (by assisting to cut down trees)--spoken of a person who brings disgrace and ruin to his family. குலகன்மம், s. Being reduced in respectability, circumstances, &c. குலமணி, s. A genuine gem; (fig.) one of an illustrious birth. குலமிலான்--குலவீனன், s. A man of low caste. குலமுறைகிளத்த--குலஞ்செப்ப, inf. To give the genealogy of a family. குலங்கூற--குலம்பேச, inf. To twit one of low parentage. 2. To boast or talk of one's own or another's high birth. குலம்புகுந்தவன், s. One who has mingled with persons of a strange caste, a term of reproach. குலம்பெயர, inf. [prov.] To be changed for the better or worse--as a tree by transplanting; to improve or degenerate. குலவித்தை, s. The arts, duties, or employments peculiar to a family or caste. குலவிருது, s. canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. The intervals of morning and evening twilight, especially the latter, regarded as the union of the day and night, மாலைநேரம்; thus அந்திசந்தி, morning and evening. (c.) 5. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. Wielding the shield as a fencer, சிலம்பம். The metrical feet are thirty, divided into five classes, viz.: 1. உரிச்சீர், or ஆசிரியவுரிச்சீர், feet peculiar to the அகவல் verse--as (a.) தேமா, foot of two simple syllables, a spondee. (b.) புளிமா, one compound and one simple syllable; an iambus. (c.) கருவி ளம். Two compound syllables, a pyrrhic. (d.) கூவிளம். One simple and one compound syllable, a trochee. The names serve also as models for the kinds of feet respectively. They are names of trees and their fruits. 2. வெண்சீர், or வெண்பாஉரி ச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வெண்பா verse; as (a.) தே-மாங்-காய். A foot of three simple syllables. (b.) புளி-மாங்-காய். One compound and two simples. (c.) கரு-விளங்--காய். Two compounds and one simple; an anap&ae;st. (d.) கூ-விளங்-காய். A simple, a compound and a simple. 3. வஞ்சியுரிச்சீர், or வஞ்சிச்சீர். Feet peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; as (a.) தே-மா ங்-கனி. A foot of two simple syllables and one compound. (b.) புளி-மாங்-கனி. One compound, one simple, and one compound; an amphibrach. (c.) கரு-விளங்கனி. Three compounds, a tribrach. (d.) கூவிளங்-கனி. One simple and two compound syllables. 4. பொதுச்சீர். Feet of four syllables peculiar to வஞ்சி verse; there are sixteen of them; the models for these are formed by adding respectively, தண்-ணி ழல், தண்-பூ, நறும்-பூ, நறு-நிழல் to the terms employed in the உரிச்சீர். 5. ஓரசைச்சீர். A foot of a single syllable; as (a.) நாள். A foot of one simple syllable. (b.) மலர். A foot of a compound syllable.--Note. 1. One use of the last two is to end the வெண்பா verse. --Note. 2. Sometimes feet answering to காசு, instead of நாள், and பிறப்பு instead of மலர், are employed to end the வெண்பா verse, i. e., the addition of குற்றுகரம் or short உ to the foregoing; and rarely the full உ, or முற்றுகரம் is found. சீராயிருக்கிறேன். I am in a good state. சீரழிக்க, inf. To disturb, subvert, pervert. 2. To ruin, demolish. 3. To disparage one's character. (c.) சீராக, inf. (adverbially.) Orderly, decently, properly, soberly, consistently, circumspectly, moderately, temperately, discreetly. சீராகநடக்க, inf. To act consistently, &c. சீராடிக்கொண்டுபோதல், v. noun. [prov.] The going of a married girl to her father's house for redress of grievances from her husband's family, especially from her mother-in-law. (c.) சீரானநடை, s. A moderate pace. 2. Good moral character without excess. சீரிழுக்க, inf. To pervert good circumstances. (R.) சீரிட--சீர்செய்ய--சீர்கொடுக்க, inf. To give house-hold utensils, &c., to a daughter when married. 2. To put in order, சீர்செய்ய. சீருக்குவர--சீரிலேவர, inf. To be altered for the better, to come to a right or natural state. சீரைத்தேட, inf. To desire wealth. (Avv.). சீரைவிசாரிக்க, inf. To inquire after one's health. (R.) சீர்குலைய, inf. To be disordered, deranged. 2. To be lost--as character, ruined--as circumstances; to be disgraced. 3. (fig.) To be defloured, கற்பழிய. சீர்குலைச்சல், v. noun. Disorder, immodesty. (R.) சீர்கெட, inf. To degenerate, deteriorate, to become tarnished, corrupt, spoiled. சீர்கெட்டவன்--சீர்கேடன், s. A worthless person, a wretch. 2. A sloven. சீர்கெட்டவாழ்வு, s. Unhappy, domestic life. சீர்கேடு, s. Disorder, derangement, irregularity. 2. clumsiness, awkwardness. 3. Ugliness, deformity. சீர்கேடி, s. The goddess of misfortune or poverty, மூதேவி. (நிக.) (p.) சீர்சிறப்பு, s. Splendid prosperity. சீர்செய்ய, inf. To put in order, regulate, improve. 2. To adorn. 3. As சீரிட, which see. சீர்திருத்த, inf. To correct, rectify, amend, ameliorate, to perform. சீர்திருந்த--சீர்பொருந்த, inf. To be corrected, rectified, reformed, &c. சீர்தூக்க, inf. To weigh or examine with a balance. 2. To weigh in the mind, to consider, deliberate. 3. To compare--commonly with பார்த்தல், for the second and third persons. சீர்தூக்கிப்பார். Ponder this well. சீர்நிருவாகம், s. Condition, state, circumstances; [ex நிருவாகம், strength.] சீர்பண்ண, inf. To make ready, to put in order, correct, improve. சீர்பதி, s. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். See சீபதி. சீர்பாதம், s. The divine feet, the illustrious feet--spoken reverently for the person. See சீபாதம். சீர்பெற, inf. To attain prosperity. சீர்போட, inf. [prov.] To tie the balance string to a paper kite. (c.) சீர்ப்பட--சீர்பட, inf. To be restored, to amend, recover, come to a good state --as செம்மைப்பட. சீர்ப்படுத்த, inf. To reform, improve, bring to a good state--as செம்மைப்படுத்த. சீர்ப்படுத்திவைக்க, inf. To arrange things in order. சீர்ப்பாடு, s. Celebrity, distinction, eminence, splender, beauty. (p.) சீர்ப்பிழை, s. An impediment, an obstacle, an untoward circumstance. 2. Fault, defect, குற்றம். சீர்மடக்கு, v. noun. Repetition of a foot in a line. (p.) சீர்மரம், s. A weaver's beam, படமரம். சீர்வரிசை, s. Presents made to a married girl, or one arrived at puberty (c.) ஒருகண்டசீராய், adv. Equally, uniformly, uninterruptedly. ஒருசீரானவன், appel. n. One who maintains consistency of character, moderation of temper, &c. பலசீரும்நடக்கும். You will be hospitably entertained. Or the matter will take verious shapes. துர்ச்சீர், s. A bad state or condition. நற்சீர், s. A good state or condition. 7)

The five species of land are: 1. குறிஞ்சி, hilly tracts. 2. பாலை. desert, arid tracts. 3. முல்லை, sylvan tracts. 4. மருதம், agricultural tracts. 5. நெய்தல், maritime tracts.--Note. The varieties in love are seven, of which five are taken from the names of the species of land above mentioned, viz.: 1. கைக்கிளை. 2. குறிஞ்சி; 3. பாலை; 4. முல்லை; 5. மருதம், for which, see அகப்பொருள். To these are added; 6. நெய்தல், the lady bemoaning her lover's absence; 7. பெ ருந்திணை, unnatural castes; disparity in age--as the wife being the elder, violation of customary rules; also love disasters, marriage feuds, &c. The last is considered inadmissible in love poetry. திணைப்பெயர், s. Names of the five soils. திணைமயக்கம், s. Blending of different soils. 2.
