[in prosody.] Repetition of a word or words with different meanings in the beginning of a line, or the repetition of a line in a verse with different meanings, சித்திரக்கவியி லொன்று, as, ஆகங்கண்டகராலற்றவாடவர், ஆகங் கண்டகராலற்றவன்பினர். அடிமடி, s. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. From beginning to end, ஆதியந் தம். 3. Upside down, கீழ்மேல். 4. Head and foot, காலுந்தலையும். அடிமுரண்டொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. To step, set a step, காலடிவைக்க. 2. To begin to walk as a child, நடக்கத்தொடங்க. 3. To intrude one's self into an affair, தலையிட. 4. To begin a work, ஆரம்பிக்க. மலையடிப்பட்டி, s. A village at the foot of a hill. சிற்றடி, s. A small or delicate foot.

aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To become extinguished as a light, the sight of the eye, &c., become extinct or suppressed (as the senses of an ascetic by austerities,) தணிய. 3. To perish, become ruined or destroyed, அழிய. 4. [impersonally.] To feel hot attended with perspiration, to swelter, புழுங்க. 5. To heat as moist straw, fruit, &c. heaped up, to ferment as vegetable matter, வெதும்ப. 6. To be hot, close, confined, as in a crowded room by the exclusion of air, &c., உஷ்ணமாக. 9. To be afflicted, வருந்த. (c.) அவிந்ததானியம், s. Spoiled, damaged grain. அவியாதநெருப்பு, s. Inextinguishable fire. அவியல், v. noun. Boiled food, அவி ந்தது. 2. A kind of curry without acid, ஓர்கறி. 3. Heat of the body with perspiration in sultry weather, sweltering, புழுக்கம். 4. Fermentation, heating of vegetable matter, of grain, &c., வெப்பம். 5. Soreness of the mouth occasioned by heat in the system--chiefly found in children--canker, salivation, &c., வாய்ப் புண். 6. ilakkaṇai (p. 52) s. Poetic license, an allowed deviation from rule in the use of language, இயற்பொருளின்சம்பந்தியையுணர்த்துவது. 2. A figurative word or phrase; it embraces three kinds; viz.: 1. விட்டவிலக்கணை, this may be metaphor, personification or otherwise--as in ascribing the power, actions, &c. of animate beings to inanimate --as, மச்சுக்கூப்பிடுகிறது, the house (people of the house) calls. 2. விடாதவிலக்கணை, a metonymy--as, புளித்தின்றான், he has eaten tamarind; i. e. its fruit. 3. விட்டும்விடாதவி லக்கணை, a kind of paradox being in one view forced and unnatural--as சூரியனிரு ளைப்பருகிற்று, the rising sun devoured the darkness; i. e. dispelled it. 17)

To be degraded, disgraced, to degenerate, to be reduced in character, estimation, rank or circumstances, இழிவுபட. 3. To fall below mediocrity, to be inferior, to be below in comparison, தாழ. இழிகடை, s. [vul.] The meanest, lowest, most degraded, மிகவிழிந்தது. (Abusively.) அவனொரு இழிகடை. He is a low wretch. இழிகண், s. Inflammation of the eyes causing the lids to droop, இழிந்தகண். இழிகுலத்தோர், s. Low caste people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர், s. Persons of low caste, illiterate or ill-bred people, கீழ்மக்கள். இழிசனர்வார்த்தை, s. The vulgar dialect. இழிசொல், s. Disgraceful or improper language, பழிச்சொல், of which four kinds are enumerated, viz.: 1. கோள் --குறளை, an invidious or injurious report, tale bearing, aspersion, slander, backbiting. 2. பொய்மொழி, lying, falsehood. 3. கடுஞ்சொல், harsh expressions, irritating language, scolding. 4. பயனில்சொல், nonsense, idle talk, vain expressions. 2. A vulgar word, இழிவானசொல். இழிஞர், s. Low caste people, the vulgar, the wretched, the miserable, debased, ignoble persons, சண்டாளர். இழிதகவு, v. noun. Inferiority, baseness, disgrace, degradation, meanness, இழிவு. 2. s. Poverty, destitution, எளிமை. இழிதிணை, s. The inferior class. See திணை. இழிந்தோர், s. The vulgar, the illiterate, low-bred persons, தாழ்ந்தோர். இழிபு, v. noun. Lowness, inferiority, meanness, degradation, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. A hollow or ditch, any hole or cavity, depressions in land, பள்ளம். வெள்ளைக்கிழிபு, s. The less or minor species of வெண்பா verse. இழிவு, v. noun. Inferiority, lowness in rank or character, meanness, baseness, தாழ்வு. 2. Contempt, disgrace, dishonor, ignominy, abjectness, wretchedness, abasement, நிந்தை. 3. Diminution, decrease, a diminished quantity, deficiency, குறைவு. 4. A hollow or cavity, பள்ளம். 5. Decay, ruin, destruction, கேடு. 6. Fault, blemish, deviation from rule, misdemeanor, குற்றம். இழிவறிந்துண்பான். One who eats knowing the advantages of a spare diet. இழிவுபட, inf. To grow mean, base, vile, to deteriorate, be in disgrace, to be degraded, ஈனப்பட. இழிவுபடுத்த, inf. v. a. To degrade, disgrace, deteriorate, debase, தாழ்வுபடுத்த. இழிவுபண்ண, inf. To treat with contempt, நிந்தைசெய்ய. தனதுமரபினிழிவுயர்ச்சியின்றி. (Choosing a wife) from a family neither above nor below his rank. 34)

To attract--as a snare, to entice, allure, inveigle, seduce, draw over to one's interests, வசமாக்க. 4. To strain, stretch, lengthen or attenuate by pulling, to draw out, நெடுகச்செய்ய. 5. To upbraid, drag out one's faults to view, to cast reproaches, insults, &c., புறத்திலிழு க்க. 7. To draw into, swallow up, engulph --as a stream, a whirl-pool, a whirl-wind, சுழித்துவாங்க. 7. To absorb--as a sponge, to absorb humors from the body, to draw-as a medicine or plaster, உறிஞ்ச. 8. To draw out the voice, lengthen the sound properly in singing, to draw in speaking, reading, &c., நீட்டிப்பேச. 9. To strain muscularly, distort the features or limbs in spasms, &c., to have the cramp, to be convulsed; in this sense, it is often used impersonally, வலியிழுக்க. 1. v. n. To linger, to be protracted, தாமதிக்க. இழுத்துப்பாடு. Sing, dwelling on the notes. தாய்வருமளவும்பேச்சிழுத்தாள். She protracted, continued the conversation, till her mother came. அந்தவழக்குவெகுபணமிழுத்துப்போட்டது. That law-suit has swallowed up a great deal of money. காரியமிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகின்றது. The affair is protracted, the business is delayed, being involved in various intricacies. இப்படியிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநின்றாலொன்றுந்தீராது. If you protract the matter so carelessly, you cannot expect a happy result. வழக்கிலேயிழுத்துவிட்டார்கள். They have dragged the matter into court. ஊர்க்காரியங்களையிழுக்க To make a long story, unnecessarily talking of other people's affairs. உன்காரியத்திலென்னையிழாதே. Do not draw me into your affairs, as a witness, party, &c. காரியத்திலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறார்கள். They pull against or away from each other-as two parties, &c., they dissent, are unsettled (fig.), from the idea of two beasts tied together. இழுத்துக்கொண்டுவர, inf. To put off from day to day. என்கடனைத்தீர்க்காமலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகிறான். He delays to pay the debt he owes me. இழுத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak drawlingly. இழுத்துவலிக்க, inf. To draw in a rope, or cord--as attached to a net, paper-kite, &c. இழுத்துவிட, inf. To put off, to protract, to delay, continue putting off and never fulfilling. 2. To bring into court, indict, prosecute, expose to the public. மடியைப்பற்றியிழுக்க, inf. To seize one's lap and pull him. காலிழுத்துநடக்க, inf. To trail the leg in walking--as a lame man. இழுபறி, s. A scuffle, a struggle, strife, squabble, வாது. இழுப்பு, v. noun. Drawing, pulling, draught, a pull, a tug, a twitch, இழுக் கை. 2. Attracting, attraction, allurement, inviting, engaging. 3. Distortion of the limbs or features by convulsions, cramp, &c. 4. Absorption. 5. Draught or force of a current, wind, &c. 6. Procrastination, tardiness, protraction, suspense, uncertainty. The meanings of the verb generally are applicable also to the verbal noun. அதிலே முன்னிழுப்புப்பின்னிழுப்பில்லை. In that matter, there can be no dispute one way or the other. இழுப்பறை, s. A box in a case, a drawer. இழுப்பாட்டம், s. Tardiness, protraction, procrastination. இழுப்பாட்டியம், s. [prov.] Procrastination, protraction, tardiness, delay--used instead of இழுப்பாட்டம். இழுப்பாணி, s. [prov.] A delayer, postponer, lingerer. 2. A moveable peg that fastens the yoke to the beam of the plough. இழுப்புண்ண, inf. To be drawn unwillingly--as some persons when they are compelled to attend court; to be forced or dragged into an affair. 2. To be allured, seduced, decoyed; to be diverted from the business in hand, be tempted, be led away by lust, be ensnared, சிக்கிக்கொள்ள. இழுப்புப்பறிப்புப்பட, inf. [vul.] To scuffle, struggle, contend. 2. To pull one another--as persons intoxicated, or in play. இழுவல், v. noun. [prov.] The act of drawing. 2. Putting off, lingering, delaying, postponing. 3. One who neglects his own affairs and busies himself with those of others. அவனொரு இழுவல். He is a busy-body, drawn into every one's business. இழுவை, v. noun. A being drawn, draught, இழுப்பு. 2. Any thing drawn-as a draught of thorns, timbers, fishes, &c., இழுக்கப்பட்டவை. 3. A long rope for draught, இழுக்கும்வடம். 4. The mark or point made on the ground by a thing drawn, சுவடு. இழுவைகண்டாலடிப்பார்க்கிறதேன்? When the track in which the thing was dragged is plain, why look for footsteps? 37)

utir (p. 60) --உதிரு, கிறது, உதிர்ந்தது, உ திரும், உதிர, v. n. To drop off, fall off--as leaves, fruits, &c.; to be blasted, nipped, to fall off--as the hair, by disease or age, சொரிய. 2. To be shaken with the wind or otherwise, அசைக்கப்பட்டுதிர. 3. To crumble, fall to pieces as cakes (பிட்டு), பிதிர. 4. To fall as tears, சிந்த. 5. To die (used in imprecations), சாவ. நீசீக்கிரமுதிர்ந்துபோவாய். You shall die soon (a curse). தாரகையுதிர்ந்த. The stars fell. (ஸ்காந்தம்.) பூவுதிரப்பிஞ்சுதிரக்காயுதிரக்கனியுதிர. Let blossoms, buds, unripe fruits, and fruits drop off; i. e. let people of all ages die--an imprecation. உதிர்ந்தசருகு, s. Withered leaves fallen from the tree. உதிர்ந்தசருகுணவொழியவுணவில்லான். He who feeds upon dry leaves abstaining from all kinds of food. (பாரதம்) உதிர்பருவம், s. The quality or consistency of a thing that easily crumbles. உதிர்மணல், s. Loose sand a little moist. இலையுதிர்காலம், s. The season of the fall of the leaf. உதிரி, s. That which falls off, or is separated, exfoliation, உதிர்ந்தது. 2. A disease, smallpox of various kinds, so called from the scabs falling off, ஓர்வைசூரி. 3. A species of plantain, ஓர்வகைவாழை. உதிரிக்குத்து, s. Aching pain incident to one attacked with உதிரி. உதிரித்தழும்பு, s. The pits left by the smallpox, அம்மைவடு. வரகுதிரி, s. A species of smallpox whose pustules are remarkably diminutive, like வரகு seeds. சருகுதிரி, s. A species of smallpox attended by the sloughing away of the affected flesh. மிளகுதிரி, s. A species of smallpox, the pustules of which are the size of pepper seeds. கல்லுதிரி, s. A species of smallpox the pustules of which are very large. உதிர், s. Powder, dust, any thing crumbled, பொடி. உதிர்வு, v. noun. Falling off, &c., உதிர்கை. 2. Crumbling to pieces, உகுகை. 20)

uvi (p. 67) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், ய, v. n. [prov. prob. a corruption of வீ.] To boil away--as water in a pot of rice. 2. To die in great numbers--as in battle or by pestilence, &c., சாவ. அம்மையினால்வெகுஜனமுவிந்துபோயிற்று. A vast multitude of people has disappeared by the smallpox. 3)

ūṭu (p. 69) s. [as உள்.] The inside, that which is intermediate, between, நடு. (சத. 18.) 2. [vul.] Wool, thread woven across the warp, தார்நூல்.--Note. Commonly ஊடு as an affix governs the dative--as அவர்களுக்கூடேவந்தான், he came between them. இந்தஅலுவல்களுக்கூடேயிதையுமெப்படிச்செய்வே ன். How can I possibly do this in the midst of so much business? கனவூடும். Even in a dream-- (பார.) ஊடறுக்க, inf. To cut through, separate and pass through, cleave, to sunder--as an arrow; to force one's way through people, jungle, beasts, &c., உள்ளறுக்க. 2. To determine between two parties, to decide differences, settle amicably, வழக்குத்தீர்க்க. ஊடாட, inf. To go about--as a domestic in a house, அகத்திலுலாவித்திரிய. 2. To frequent, பலகாற்பயில. 3. To deal, or be familiar with, பழக. 4. To be conversant with a subject--as of science, art, &c., கல்விபயில. பாரைக்கூடாடாதபாறைபசுமரத்தின்வேருக்கூடாடி விடும். A rock that cannot be moved by a crow-bar gives way to the roots of a tree. முட்டரோடாடியநட்புக்கருங்காலிக்கட்டையூடா டியகால். Friendship with the base is like a hard block thrown against the knee. மயிரூடாடாநட்புச்சிறிதுபொருளுடாடக்கெடும்... Friendship so close as not to admit of even a hair-like interruption may be destroyed by pecuniary dealings. ஊடாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To search, examine, &c., to look into, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. கல்வியிலூடாடிப்பார். Look into learning, learn. ஊடாட்டம், v. noun. Familiarity, intercourse, intimacy, பழகுகை. ஊடாட்டம்பண்ண, inf. To be familiar, have intercourse, with, பயிற்சி பண்ண. ஊடுசெல்ல, inf. To pass through a crowd, a jungle, &c. ஊடுதாக்க, inf. To oppose with firmness, பின்னிடாமலெதிர்நிற்க. 2. To compare two things with each other with regard to their strength. ஒன்றோடொன்றூடுதாக்க, inf. To oppose each other. ஊடுபற்ற, inf. To suck--as the young of beasts, கன்றூட்ட. அவரைவைத்துக்கொண்டூட்டுகிறார்கள். They entertain him with great attention--an expression of envy. இரண்டாட்டிலூட்டினகுட்டியானான். He is like a kid that sucks two she-goats; i. e. he gets nothing by serving two masters. கன்றூட்டுகிறது. The calf sucks. ஊட்டக்கொடுக்க, inf. To let the calf suck (the act of the cow). ஊட்டவிட, inf. To lead the calf to the cow to suck. ஊட்டுந்தாய், s. a foster-mother, செவிலி. See தாய். பிழைப்பூட்ட, inf. To reanimate, restore to life. 2. To furnish means of sustenance. இந்தவைத்தியன்போகுமுயிரைப்பிழைப்பூட்டினான். The doctor has restored him to life. நினைப்பூட்ட, inf. To remind, to put in mind. நினைப்பூட்டி, s. A monument. ஊட்டு, v. noun. Feeding, உண் பிக்கை. 2. s. A morsel, or portion given to a child, a sick person, &c., கவளம். ஊட்டுக்கன்று, s. A sucking calf. ஊட்டுமறந்தகன்று, s.
