அபிநயம்
apinayam (p. 17) s. Indication of passion, purpose, &c., by gesture in dramatic personification, acting, gesture, கைமெய்காட் டுகை. Wils. p. 53. AB'HINAYA. 2. alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. ஆயுதம்
āyutam (p. 40) s. A weapon, arms in general, படைக்கலம். Wils. p. 118. AYUD'HA. 2. (c.) A tool, implement, instrument கருவி. 3. (p.) Dancing place, கூத் துப்பயிலிடம். ஆயுதசாலை, s. An armory, arsenal. ஆயுதந்தரிக்க, inf. To bear arms, to be armed. ஆயுதபரிக்கை--ஆயுதபரிட்சை-ஆயுதப்பயிற்சி, s. Military exercise, the art of fencing, &c. ஆயுதபாணி, s. An armed man, one under arms. (p.) ஆயுதபூசை, s. An annual festival in September, when worship for nine days is offered to different kinds of weapons, tools, books, &c.--as a personification of Durga, Lukshmi and Sarasvati, the goddesses of war, wealth and learning; there days being appropriated to each, and no learning, or special exercise attended to, during this time, நவராத்திரி. ஆயுதவகை, s. இலக்கணை
ilakkaṇai (p. 52) s. Poetic license, an allowed deviation from rule in the use of language, இயற்பொருளின்சம்பந்தியையுணர்த்துவது. 2. A figurative word or phrase; it embraces three kinds; viz.: 1. விட்டவிலக்கணை, this may be metaphor, personification or otherwise--as in ascribing the power, actions, &c. of animate beings to inanimate --as, மச்சுக்கூப்பிடுகிறது, the house (people of the house) calls. 2. விடாதவிலக்கணை, a metonymy--as, புளித்தின்றான், he has eaten tamarind; i. e. its fruit. 3. விட்டும்விடாதவி லக்கணை, a kind of paradox being in one view forced and unnatural--as சூரியனிரு ளைப்பருகிற்று, the rising sun devoured the darkness; i. e. dispelled it. 17)
இலிங்கம்
ilingkam (p. 54) s. A sign, mark, token, symbol, அடையாளம். 2. The penis. ஆண்குறி. 3. The phallus or linga--a representation of the membra viri et mulieris used in temples as an object of worship, and regarded as deity under this emblem. It is also made of gold or silver and worn in a casket on the arm, the breast, or some other part of the body, as an amulet and as an object of veneration and worship. In both these cases it represents both sexes in conjunction, being emblematical of Siva and Sacti, or the male and female energies of the deity, சிவலிங்கம். In the Agama philosophy three lingas are mentioned; viz.: 1. Streelinga (ஸ்திரீலிங்கம்) the same as விந்து--the female linga common to male and female--including in both sexes the organs for secreting and containing the seminal fluid. 2. Purshalinga (புருட லிங்கம்) same as நாதம் (Natha) male linga, also common to both sexes, including in both sexes the genital organs for transmitting and combining the two productions essential to generation. 3. Napunchakalinga, (நபுஞ்சகம்) same as அலி, Ali or Alilinga, the neuter or rather hermaphrodite linga, being the physiological foundation of the other two, both as to their organization and functions. The image linga often bears this name; these three are distinguished by the terms அவன், அவள், அது. They are physiological and are found in such works as தத்துவக்கட்டளை, &c. There is another class of lingas called பஞ்சலிங் கம், the five lingas, popularly represented as deity under the emblems of the five elements, and worshipped in as many celebrated temples, viz.: பிருதிவிலிங்கம், earth-linga, worshipped at Canjeevara-அப்புலிங்கம், water-linga, worshipped at Tiruvanaicka--தேயுலிங்கம், fire linga, worshipped at Tiruvannamalay--வாயுலிங்கம், air-linga, worshipped at Tirukalatti-ஆகாயலிங்கம், ether-linga, worshipped at Sethumbaram. These are properly of a metaphysical or mystical character and belong to the arcana of Hinduism. The above designations are for popular use and are given from their physiological connection with the five bodies or casements of the soul, whose natural bases are the elements. earth, water, fire, air and ether, respectively. Among the initiated, the following are the terms employed, viz.: 1. ஸ்திரீலிங் கம், Streelinga--this is properly the organ entire--male and female with its functions; it is a figure (உரூபம்) the only one of the five to which form is ascribed. There is but one image, the representation of this. The சரிதை course of worship, i. e. the popular puranic course belongs to this. 2. புல்லிங்கம், this is defined to be உணர்வு; the course here is that of instruction and perception as to the action of the instrument, &c. To this belongs the கிரியை course of worship, the second great stage. 3. நபுஞ் சகலிங்கம், this is the stage of darkness, of neutrality, called the stage of darkness and doubt, and, as a course of worship, is included in the succeeding one. 4. பரமலிங் கம், this comes under the dominion of மயேச் சுரன், the concealer, and is called மறைப்பு; the course here is that of யோகம், the third great stage. 5. மகாலிங்கம், this is தெளிவு, the course of ஞானம், the last stage which exempts from births, and secures absorption in the supreme essence. Wils. p. 72. LINGA. இலிங்ககோளம், s. Glans penis. (Anat.) இலிங்கங்கட்டி--இலிங்கதாரி, s. One who wears the linga. இலிங்கசங்கமம், s. Symbols of the sexes united--probably a personification of the active energy of the deity and of matter, represented in metal. &c., or formed in the mind as objects of contemplation and worship. இலிங்கசூலை, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கபுடோல், s. The ஐவிரலி, creeper, Bryonia, L. இலிங்கபுராணம், s. One of the eighteen Puranas, புராணம்பதினெட்டிலொ ன்று. இலிங்கப்புற்று, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கரோகம், s. The venereal disease, ஆண்குறியில்வருமோர்புண். இலிங்கர்--இலிங்கிகள், s. Ascetics, Rishis who wear the Linga, சைவ தவப்பாலோர். இலிங்கி, s. An ascetic. 2. A worshipper of Siva, under the phallic emblem. 3. A hypocrite, a pretended devotee. ஸ்படிகலிங்கம், s. A linga made of quartz. பாணலிங்கம், s. A stone in the form of a linga--found in the river Nurbudda. பிரசாதலிங்கம், s. What is dedicated to Siva. பார்த்திபலிங்கம், s. Any thing assumed as an emblem of linga, and worshipped. சுயம்புலிங்கம், s. A linga supposed to be self-existent. சங்கமலிங்கம், s. A man of the Changama sect. குருலிங்கம், s. A spiritual father, a confessor. 17)

kangkai (p. 85) s. The river Ganges or its personification as a goddess being the wife of Chandanu, பகீரதி. Wils. p. 275. GANGA. கங்காசலம், s. The water of the Ganges, either as flowing in its bed, or as conveyed to other places for sacred purposes. Wils. p. 776. GANGAJALA. கங்காசலக்குப்பி, s. A vessel made of a kind of coarse black glass in which the Hindu ascetics convey water from the Ganges, மேருக்குப்பி. கங்காசுதன்--கங்கைபெற்றோன்-கங்கைமைந்தன், s. Bishma, வீடுமன். 2. Subramania, சுப்பிரமணியன். Wils. p. 276. GANGASUTA. 3. Ganesa, விநாயகன். (p.) கங்காக்ஷேத்திரம், s. The river Ganges including two kosh, or about four miles on either of its banks; all dying within such limits go to heaven, whatever be their crimes. 2. A pure or sacred place. Wils. p. 276. GANGAKSHETHRA. கங்காதரன், s. Siva, சிவன். Wils. p. 276. GANGATHARA. கங்காதீரம், s. The sacred banks of the Ganges, கங்கைக்கரை. Wils. p. 276. GANGATEERA. கங்காதேவி, s. The river Ganges regarded as a goddess, கங்கை. கங்காஸ்நானம், s. Ablution in the Ganges. கங்கேஷ்மிசுரன், s. The name of a famous brahman, a logician who lived near the Ganges, the author of the book கௌடதர்க்சம். கங்கேஷ்மிசுரம், s. A logical treatise composed by கங்கேஷ்மிசுரன். கங்கைசக்களத்தி, s. Parvati, பார் ப்பதி. கங்கைவேணியன், s. Siva, he whose hair is adorned with the Ganges, சிவன். 25)
காயத்திரி
kāyattiri (p. 104) s. The Gayatri--the most sacred verse of the Vedas, recited mentally as an incantation, ஓர்மந்திரம். 2. (p.) Gayatri, a goddess or personification of the sacred verse, காயத்திரி சுரூபியாயிருப்பவள். 3. A name of Saraswathi, சரச்சுவதி. Wils. p. 288. GAYATRI. 4. Ebony, கருங்காலி. பிரமகாயத்திரி, s. The Brahma Gayatri, recited by brahmans of whatever sect, in their daily worship.-- Note. The use of this Gayatri was probably established in some remote age when the worship of Brahma was practised. This has long been discontinued except in this form of the Gayatri. It is said to be addressed to the sun. Compare சாவித் திரி. சிவகாயத்திரி, s. The Siva Gayatri. 84)
குரு
kuru (p. 125) s. A guru, a spiritual teacher, a priest, ஆசான்.--Note. According to the shastras, the guru is to be regarded by the disciple as the personification of the deity; and to be worshipped with divine honors. In his presence, the disciple is exonerated from his accustomed rites, and devotions, and addresses him by appellatives, used in addressing the deity of his sect. 2. the planet Jupiter, regarded as the guru or priest of Swerga, &c., வியாழன். 3. Heaviness, weight, பாரம். 4. Consequence, importance, moment, காத்திரம். 5. Greatness, eminence, excellence, exaltedness, பெருமை. 6. [in music.] The quantity of a long vowel, or a long note. இருமாத்திரை. 7. [in gram.] A long vowel, நெடில். 8. [in the Agamas.] The deity Siva--as illuminator of souls, சி வன். 9. Divinity, திவ்வியம். Wils. p. 293. GURU. 1. A kind of native arsenic,, பலண் டுறுகம். 11. [in medi. &c.] Blue vitriol, துருசி. 12. [in alchy.] A compound medicine, formed of different metals; phylosopher's powder, உலோகங்களை வேதிக்குங்சிந்தூரமுதலியவை. 13. [in chem.] Mercury, இரதம்.--Note. In the last three senses, the word Guru has its technical meanings, derived however from its literal meaning of precepter and director. 14. Brilliancy, lustre, effulgence, பிரகா சம். Wils. p. 31. GHRU. 15. The name of one of the nine sons of அங்கீதிரன், who was the first monarch of Jambu Dwipa, அங்கீதிரன்புதல்வரில் ஒருவன். (காந்.) 16. One of the nine division or var'shas of Jambu Dwipa which fell to the share of the prince Kuru, being the most northern portion beyond the Sringa range of mountains, குருவருடம். 17. The name of a prince of the lunar race, famous in the Bharata, from whom the family was called குருகுலம் and the descendants, கௌரவர்; குரு குலவம்சத்து முதல்அரசன். (பார.) 18. A country near Delhi, over which Kuru of the lunar race was once a sovereign, குருபூமி. (பார.) 19. prickly heat, வேர்க்குரு; Wils. p. 232. KURU. 2. Pustule, blister; hence, any eruptive disease--as the small-pox, chicken-pox, measles, &c., குருவியாதி. குருஆரால்மூக்குப்போலிருக்கின்றது. The smallpox is like the nose of a lamprey. குருநாதன், s. The name of Skanda-as having explained to his father Siva the mystic word ஓம். 2. Siva. 3. A guru--as the lord of the disciple. குருபரன்--குருமூர்த்தி, s. The deity in human form, appearing for the instruction of a devoted person of the சக லர், especially spoken of Siva. குருகடாட்சம், s. The gracious or benign look of the guru on his disciple, dispelling sin, imparting spiritual wisdom, and preparing the soul for emancipation. குருகற்பனை, s. Precept or the guru-deemed sacred. குருசந்தானம், s. A regular succession of priests, or gurus. குருசம்பாவனை, s. Blessing or favor of the guru. 2. Worship or honor due to the guru. குருசம்பிரதாயம், s. Oral instruction in the secret meaning of the mantras, &c., handed down from generation to generation, in the line of the guru, and by him communicated confidentially to his advanced disciples. குருசன்னிதானம், s. The presence of the guru. குருசேடம், s. Remains of a guru's food--considered sacred, குருப்பிரசாதம். குருசேவை, s. Civilities, duties, worship, &c., paid to a guru, குருஉபசரணை. குருதக்கணை--குருதட்சிணை, s. Fees or presents to the guru, commonly in money, given with due homage, &c. குருதீட்சை--குருதீக்கை, s. The initiation of a disciple by a guru to certain privileges of his religion, or afterwards to a more advanced degree, குரூபதேசம். குருத்திரவியம், s. Property or treasure of the guru. குருத்துரோகம், s. Treachery towards a guru, or injury of one. குருநிந்தை, s. Indignity to the priest. குருத்துவம், s. Priesthood, or the dignity, power, honor, &c., of a guru, குருத்தன்மை. 2. Honor, respectability, கனம். Wils. p. 293. GURUTVA. குருபத்தி--குருவிசுவாசம், s. Dutiful love, piety, &c., towards the guru, குருவி னிடத்திலன்பு. குருபத்தினி--குருபன்னி, s. The wife of a guru, குருவின்மனைவி. குருபாரம்பரியம், s. Ancestral priesthood in regular succession; the lineage or genealogy of a guru,குருபாரம்பரை. குருபீடம், s. The dignified seat, or office of a guru, குருஸ்தானம். குருபுத்திரன், s. A son of a guru, குரு புதல்வன். 2. An obedient disciple, உண் மையானசீஷன். குருபூசை, s. Pujah or worship, offered to a guru, by an advanced disciple competent to do it, குருவுக்குச்செய்யுமாராதனை. 2. Food, &c., given to Brahmans, religious mendicants, &c., by the disciples of a deceased guru, in rememberence of him as deifled, இறந்துபோனகுருவைக்குறித்துச்செய் யும்பூசை. குருபோதனை, s. The instruction of the guru. குருப்பட்டம், s. The office, authority of dignity of a guru, குருத்துவம். குருப்பட்டம்பெற, inf. To receive priesty authority, ordination, &c. குருப்பட்டாபிஷேகம், s. The ordination of a guru. குருப்பிரசாதம், s. The favor, grace, or blessing of the guru; gift from the guru, குருவருள். 2. Remains of a guru's food, குருவுண்டசேஷம். குருமரியாதை, s. Reverence for the guru. குருமுகமாய்க்கேட்க--குருமுன்னிலை யாயறிய--குருவாக்கியமாய்க்கேட்க inf. To learn viva voce, so as to attain certainty in doubtful matters. குருமுறை, s. A guru's teaching, குரு சொல்லியமுறை. குருமுன்னிலையாய், In the presence of the guru, குருவின்முன்னிடம். 2. By means or favor of the guru, குருமூலம். குருமை, s. Dignity, superiority, பெ ருமை. குருமூர்த்தம், s. The manifestation of a deity as a guru for the instruction of disciples; especially spoken of Siva, குரு வடிவம். குருலிங்கசங்கமம், s. An aggregate of the spiritual guru--Siva under the phallic emblem--and the devotees of Siva, குருவுஞ் சிவமுந் திருக்கூட்டமும். குருமொழி--குருவசனம்--குருவாக்கியம் --குருவாக்கு, s. The precepts, instructions, &c., of a guru. குருவுக்குநாமம்வைக்கிறவன், s. One who out-schemes, and out-wits, his guru, teacher or superior. குருவுபதேசம்--குரூபதேசம்,s. The initiation of a disciple by the guru. சற்குரு, s. A divine guru, the heavenly teacher. குருசந்திரயோகம், s. The conjunction of Jupiter and the moon in the same sign--considered auspicious. குருசாரபலம், s. [in astrol.] Good and ill results, derived from the progress of the planet Jupiter through the signs, வியாழபலன். குருவாரம், s. Thursday, வியாழக்கிழ மை. குருக்கொடுக்க, inf. [prov.] To instigate, ஏவிவிட. 2. To persuade, incite, commonly to a bad action, கொடுமைசெய் யத்தூண்ட. 3. To assume to teach, give advice &c., in the presence of the learned, புத்திசொல்ல. குருக்கொள்ள, inf. To assume to teach, give advice, &c., above one's age. இராசநீதி குருக்கொண்டு முதிர்ந்தனையோ. Do you take upon you to teach jurisprudence? (பார.) குருதுரியம், s. [in the Agamas.] The highest degree in the சுத்தம் state of souls; that next to absorption. குருபதம், s. The bliss of the deity, சதானந்தம். 2. Liberation from births, and absorptiom in the deity, பிறவிநீக்கம். குருமுடிக்க, inf. To combine ingredients with medicines to make them active, or to neutralize poisonous qualities, &c., இரசவாதகுருமுடிக்க. குருகுலம், s. The Kuru dynasty; the patronymic is commonly applied to the sons and descendants of Dhrutarashtra, குருவமிசம். குருகுலத்தரசர்--குருகுலவேந்தர், s. Kings of the Kuru race. குருநிலம், s. The territory of the king Kuru. குருக்கேத்திரம்--குருக்ஷேத்திரம், s. The country near Delhi, the scene of the great battle between the Kurus and Pándavas, described in the Bharata. Wils. p. 242. KURUKSHETRA. குருக்கேத்திரன், s. The name of a king in mythology, ஓர்வீரன். குருவருடம், s. One of the nine portions or divisions of the central continent, or Jambu Dwipa, ஓர்கண்டம். See வருடம். குருநாள், s. The eighth lunar asterism, பூசம். குருநாடிவிதி, s. A treatise on the ten tubular vessels in the system, and for the ascertainment of diseases by feeling the pulse, நாடிச்சாத்திரம். குருபாலப்பிரபோதிகை, s. One of the commentaries on the Sanscrit Amara Cosha. குருநோய்--குருவியாதி, s. The smallpox, வசூரி. குருபுறப்பட-குருக்காண-குருவார்க்க, inf. To take the small-pox. குருப்பிக்க, inf. v. n. [prov.] To shoot forth; to break out--as pimples, &c. குருமுகறன்--குருமூஞ்சி, s. [vul.] One whose face in pock-pitted. குருவண்டு--குருப்பூச்சி, s. A kind of spotted wasp, ஓர்குளவி. குருவெறும்பு, s. A kind of large, red ant. See எறும்பு. குருவேர், s. A plant, the roots of which are very fragrant, ஓர்செடியின்வேர். 24)

catti (p. 159) s. Ability, power, strength, energy, prowess, வல்லமை. 2. The female energy or active power of deity in all the operations of creating, preserving, destroying, &c., பராசத்திமுதலியன.--Note. Each form of the deity is represented as having a distinct சத்தி described as his consort. 3. A name of பார்வதி. 4. The female organ, as the counter part of the phallic emblem of Siva, ஆவிடையார். 5. An iron spear or dart, கைவேல். W. p. 824. SAKTI. 6. Sulphur, கந்தகம். 7. Soap, சவக்காரம். 8. Bismuth pyrites, நிமிளை. 9. [for சத்திரம்.] An umbrella or parasol, குடை. 1. The white parasol as a badge of royalty, வெண்குடை. 11. Pursuit after works, ceremonies, &c., as one of the five சிவதத்துவம்.--Note. The three saktis are, 1. இச்சாசத்தி. 2. ஞானாசத்தி. 3. கிரியாசத்தி, which see. To these are added சிறசத்தி, and பராசத்தி. Others add 1. திரோதானசத்தி. 2. மாயாசத்தி. 3. விந்துச்சத்தி. சத்திக்குத்தக்கதாய்ச்செய். Do according to your ability. அதெனக்குச்சத்தியாய்க்கிடைக்கும். I shall eventually get it. சத்திகுறைய, inf. To be wanting in strength. சத்திசெலுத்த, inf. To authorise. (p.) சத்திபூசை, s. The puja-worship of the வாமர் sect, performed in secret with raw flesh, ardent spirit, &c. The object of worship being the privities of a naked woman, in personification of the fecundating and operative principle of deity in nature. சத்தியுள்ளவன், s. A rich man, a man of influence. (c.) சத்தியில்லாதவன், s. An incompetent person, a weak person. (c.) சத்திவிளங்க, inf. [loc.] To become manifest as power, a miraculous power. அருட்சத்தி, s. [in சிவஞானபோதம்.] The active energy of deity which is said to enlighten the soul and to be a source of benefit to all animated beings. சிவசத்தி, s. Sakti, or active power considered in its inseparable connection with Siva. (சிவ.சி.) 2. (R.) The consort of Siva, பார்வதி. 3. Siva and his consort. திரவியசத்தி, s. Pecuniary ability. மந்திரசத்தி, s. The force or virtue of incantations. சரீரசத்தி, s. Bodily power, vigor of body. பிரபுத்துவசத்தி, s. Princely dignity, power of rank, &c. வீரசத்தி, s. Valor. 51) *
சமாதி
camāti (p. 163) s. The last of the eight அ ங்கயோகம், or states and modes of silent, contemplative worship, அங்கயோகத்தொன்று. 2. One of the postures of the ascetic for silent meditation, being an upright, majestic position, as a fancied image of the deity, ஞானசமாதி. 3. The abstract contemplation of the ascetic in which the soul is supposed to be independent of the body and mind. (See யோகம்.) 4. Knowledge of the sublimest description--as of the deity, one's own spiritual nature, &c., acquired by supernatural illumination, without the aid of organs physical or mental, சமாதி தரிசனை. 5. A mode of interment, by placing the corpse in a sitting posture in imitation of the சமாதி worshipper, சமாதி யில்வைக்க,--Note. The வீரசைவர் sect are all burried in this manner, (it being deemed improper to burn them lest the linga previously worn should be burnt also,) and occasionally a monument of masonry is built around the corpse, as a linga, which thus becomes an object of worship. 6. A grave, a tomb, a sepulchre, பிணம் புதைக்குங்குழி. 7. [in rhet.] A species of personifications, a metaphor in which the quality or attribute properly belongs to the objects to which the metaphor refers, ஓரலங்காரம்--as பாயிருள்பருகிப்பகல்கான்றெழுதரு பருதி, the orient sun which swallows the darkness and pours forth the day; also, கன்னிமதில், virgin walls, i. e. imperishable, and குமரிஞாழல், the young rush, i. e. ever green. 8. Death, demise, commonly spoken of a devotee, மரணம். W. p. 896. SAMAD'HI. சமாதிக்குப்போக, inf. To betake one's self for a time to his cell, as an advenced devotee to secure uninterrupted, and protracted contemplation in silent worship. சமாதிக்குழி, s. The cell or grave of the devotee for interment, in an erect, sitting posture. 2. A grave. சமாதிபண்ண, inf. To sit in any of the postures of the Yogi. (p.) சமாதிபெற, inf. To receive of the Guru the degree of the Yogi, entitling the person to the privilege of sitting in the சமாதி postures. சமாதியடைய, inf. To sit in the ச மாதி posture in silent meditation. 2. To retire to the grave, to die. 3. To die in an erect posture--as a devotee. சமாதியில்வைக்க, inf. To bury a corpse in a sitting posture--as customary with some Hindus. (c.) சமாதியிருக்க, inf. To sit in a contemplative posture--as a silent devotee. 2. To betake one's self to his sepulchre --as an exalted devotee, on the approach of death, remaining without nourishment in a sitting posture until life is extinct. சமாதியுப்பு, s. A kind of medicinal salt formed from the corpse interred in a sitting posture, taken up after some years; also the salt cast into the grave at the interment to prevent putrefaction. 10)
சொரூபம்
corūpam (p. 212) s. W. p. 963. SVAROOPA. Exact likeness, resemblance, சாயல். 2. From, shape, வடிவம். 3. An image, விக்கிரகம். 4. Handsomeness, அழகு. (Compare சுரூபம்.) 5. Mode of existence, natural state; nature of the deity, &c., பாவனை.--Note. This word is adopted in the Athanasian creed for person, in the deity--hypostasis. வேதசொரூபத்திலேநின்றுநான்பிறந்தேன். I was born from the shape (real personification) of the unwritten Vedas. சிற்சொரூபம், s. God--as possessing wisdom. See சித்து. சொரூபசாரம், s. The name of a shastra, ஓர்சைவநூல். சொரூபசுபாவம், s. Nature, attributes, or manifestations of deity. சொரூபஞானம், s. Divine Knowledge, real wisdom, knowledge of deity or of the soul, as obtained by devine aid, and distinguished from விடயஞானம், or knowledge derived by means of the senses. சொரூபன், s. The Deity, He who has spiritual form or existence, கடவுள்.-Note. The meaning is commonly determined by a prefix, as அருட்சொரூபன், he whose very shape is grace. சொரூபானந்தம், s. Perfect felicity. (தாயுமானார்.) சொரூபானந்தர், s. (Hon.) A celebrated wise man, ஓர்யோகி. 2) *

nitricṉm (p. 277) s. Example, illustration, authority, precept, திருஷ்டாந்தம்; [ex நி, fulness.] W. p. 467. NIDARSANA. 2. [in rhet.] A species of personification, feigning a thing in nature, as doing good or evil for a mode of moral instruction. See அலங்காரம். 13) *
பிட்டி
piṭṭi (p. 315) s. [com. பெட்டி.] A basket, சிறுகூடை; [from Pit'a. W. p. 537.] பிட்டுக்களிகொண்டுபோக. To carry pastry and gruel as a present, to the house of a marriageable girl. பிட்டுக்குமண்சுமந்ததிருவிழா. A festival at Madura in commemoration of Siva's personification of சொக்கர். 12) *
மனு
maṉu (p. 346) s. Menu, the great legislator and saint, regarded as the son of Brahma, or a personification of that god, and the author of மானவம் or Institutes of Menu. He is called Swayambhuva, மனுச்சக்கிரவர்த்தி. 2. A generic term, applied to the fourteen successive Menus who preside over the universe, each for the period of a Manuvantara--In the present Kalpa there have already been six, of whom Swayambhuva was the first. The seventh, or now ruling Menu, is Vaivaswata. 3. Man in general, மனுஷன். 4. Mantra, a mystical verse, or formula, மந்திரம். W. p. 641. MANU. 5. One of the treatises of jurisprudence. See தருமநூல். மனுப்பெருத்தராச்சியம். A country thickly populated. மனுஅவதாரம், s. The incarnation of a a deity in human form. மனுஉரு--மனுவுரு, s. Human shape. மனுகுலத்தோர்--மனுமரபோர், s. [pl.] Descendants of king Menu. மனுக்கள், s. Men. மனுக்குலம், s. Mankind. மனுநீதி--மனுநெறி, s. Statutes, institutes of Menu, தருமநூல். 2. Equity. மனுப்பிரளயம், s. The general deluge at the close of each Manuvantara. மனுப்புத்திரர், s. [pl.] The descendants of Menu, மனுவமிசத்தார். 2. Men, human beings, மனுடர். மனுப்பூடுகள், s. [vul.] Human beings, in pity. மனுமகன், s. A man of noble descent, பிரபு. 2. [com. மனுஷமகன்.] An honest man, a man of truth, யோக்கியன். மனுமக்கள், s.
