akppāṭṭuṟuppu (p. 2) s. The twelve members of அகப்பொருள் or அகத்திணை, viz. 1. இயல்பகத்திணை. Method of defining a thing or showing its nature, quality, &c. 2. வகையகத்திணை. Amplification, or detailing at large what has been said briefly. 3. பொதுவகத்திணை. The rule for summing up or recapitulating. 4. சிறப்பகத்திணை. The rule for discriminating, or explaining the difference of things. 5. உவமவகத்திணை. The rule for illustrating a subject by metaphors, comparisons, &c. 6. புறநிலையகத்திணை. The rule for exemplifying a subject by examples. 7. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை. The rule for elucidating a circumstance by its opposite. 8. காரண or கருவியகத்திணை. aṟu (p. 33) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To cut off, part asunder, cut or break off as a string, வெட்ட. 2. To reap, நென்முதலியனவரிய. 3. To disjoin by cutting or untying--as the marriage string, to separate, sever, நீக்க. 4. To extirpate, exterminate, வேரோடழிக்க. 5. To saw asunder, வாளாலறுக்க. 6. To kill by severing the wind-pipe of beasts, &c., to slay, கழுத் தறுக்க. 7. To burrow, excavate, form subterraneous passages, வளைதோண்ட. 8. To mould bricks, செங்கல்லறுக்க. 9. with கண க்கு.] To settle accounts, தீர்க்க. 1. [with வகை.] To explain, define things clearly, finish a dispute, தீர்மானிக்க. (c.) அறுத்தகோழி துடிக்குமாப்போல். Agitated (with sorrow, anxiety, &c.,) as a fowl with its throat cut. அறுத்தறுத்தப்பேசுகிறான். He speaks distinctly. 2. He speaks decisively. 3. He uses cutting words. தடையறுத்துக்கொடுப்பேன். I will remove the obstacles, obviate objections, break the enchantments which prevent success --as in fishing, &c. வீரனுமவன்றலையறுத்தான். And Veeran cut off his head. இருளறுத்தெழுங்கதிர். The rising sun which exterminates the darkness. அறுமணை, s. An instrument for cutting vegetables, fish, &c. 2. A slut, slatterer. 3. A woman ugly or deformed in features. (c.) அறுவடை, v. noun. The act of reaping the corn. அறுவரி, s. A tax paid at fixed times. அறுவிதி, s. Decision. வழக்கறுக்க, inf. To decide a case. ஆடறுக்க, inf. To slay sheep. அறுப்பு, v. noun. Sundering, separating, cutting a part, reaping, &c., அரிகை. 2. A piece, section, அறுத்ததுண்டு. 3. An imprecation of widowhood--in allusion to the sundering of the marriage ornament at the death of the husband, தாலியறுக்கை. 4. The opening of a wound, an open cut, &c., அறுவாய். 5. The opening made in sawing a piece of timber, மரமுதலியவையினறுவாய். 6. Confutation, refutation of another's arguments, ஆட்சேபிக்கை. அறுப்புக்காலம், s. The time of harvest. அறுப்புண்க, inf. To be cut asunder, to be divided, be severed by cutting. 56)

aṟai (p. 33) s. The sound of a letter, எழுத்தினோசை. 2. A word or sentence as uttered (not as written), சொல். 3. A rock, பாறை. 4. Peak of a mountain, மலையுச்சி. (p.) 5. A room, a chamber, cell, a separate apartment of a house, அறைவீடு. 6. (c.) Drawer of a box or otherwise, பெட்டிய றை. 7. (p.) The apartment in a chessboard, அரங்கு. 8. The cells in a bee-hive, தேன்கூட்டினறை. 9. Hanging ornaments, தூக்கங்கள். 1. A curtain, திரைச்சீலை. 11. An excavation, cavern, முழைஞ்சு. அறைகுறை, s. Wants, necessities, troubles. அறைகுறைபார்க்க, inf. To repair damages. அறைகூவ, inf. To challenge, summon to combat. (p.) அறைக்கட்டுக்கட்ட, inf. To build rooms and apartments in a house. 2. To construct a temporary temple on a certain festival. அறைபோக, inf. To undermine, make an underground passage, கீழறுக்க. 2. To desert to an enemy. அறைமுறையிட, inf. To complain, state one's wants and complaints. அறையுங்குறையுமான, rel. part. Incomplete, unfinished, half-done. 2. Injured, loose, defective, torn. அறைவீடு, s. A house with separate rooms or cells. 2. A room, chamber, room for security. நிலவறை, s. A cellar, a dungeon. 61)

aḷ (p. 33) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To measure, fathom, expore, estimate, அளவுசெய்ய. 2. To apportion, mete out, measure out, பங்கிட. 3. To extend, reach, எட்ட. விசும்பளந்தாண்டுநின்றிடுஞ்சிகரியை. The turrets which reached to the sky. மரக்காலைப்பாய்ச்சியளக்கிறான். He measures thrusting in the marcal; i. e. into the heap. பறைவெட்டியளக்கிறான்--பறைதட்டியளக்கிறான். He measures by striking off the excess of the grain. ஐயனளந்தபடி. As God allots. அளக்கை--அளத்தல், v. noun. Measuring. அளபு, v. noun. Measurement, அ ளவு. 2. The lengthening of the sound of a letter, அளபெடை. அளபெடுக்க, inf. To lengthen a letter, whether vowel or consonant, by the insertion of another short letter or mute, as the case may be, for the sake of the poetry, and sometimes for euphony, as, கழூஉ for கழு; மாத்திரைமிக் கொலிக்க. அளபெடை, v. noun. The lengthening of a letter chiefly for the sake of the verse. There are two ways of doing this. 1. உயிரளபெடை, the addition of a short vowel to a long one, either in the beginning, middle, or end of a word--as ஈஇ கை, gift--for ஈகை; படாஅ கை, banner--for படாகை; and குழூஉ, multitude--for குழு. Again this is divided into இயற்கையளபெடை, and செயற்கையளபெ டை. 2. ஒற்றளபெடை, the lengthening of the mutes, ங், ஞ், ண், ந், ம், ன், வ், ய், ல், ள், and ஃ by being repeated twice either in the middle or end of a word when they are placed after one or two short syllables, as அரங்கம், முரஞ்ஞ்சு, மண்ண்ணு, அம்ம்பு, கொள்ள்க, விலஃஃகி. அளப்பம்--அளப்பு, v. noun. Measuring, அளக்கை. 2. (fig.) Fate, destiny, ஊழ். 3. Needless repetition, chatter, அலப்பு. 4. Expressing dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்கை. வனிதையரளப்பிலர், The damsels are without number. அளப்பளக்க, inf. To repeat, use needless repetitions, prate, chatter, அ லப்ப. 2. To complain, grumble, express dissatisfaction, முறுமுறுக்க. அளப்பன், s. [prop. அலப்பன்.] A babbler, prater, chatterer, வீணாகப்பேசு வோன். 13)

aẕku (p. 31) s. Beauty, comeliness, handsomeness, elegance, propriety, fineness, யௌவனம். (c.) 2. The beauties or graces of language or style, நஙலின்பத்தழகு. These as given in the பாயிரம் of நன்னூல், are ten; viz.: 1. சுருங்கச்சொல்லல், speaking concisely. 2. விளங்கவைத்தல், treating a subject clearly and plainly. 3. நவின்றோர்க் கினிமை, acceptableness to the educated. 4. நன்மொழிபுணர்த்தல், using elegant words, suitable expressions. 5. ஓசையுடைமை, being pleasant to the ear with a good rhythm and cadence. 6. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், being comprehensive, profound. 7. முறையின்வைப்பு, systematic arrangement, method. 8. உலக மலையாமை, being without obscurity or contrariety. 9. விழுமியதுபயத்தல், giving a good sense, as allegorical, &c. 1. விளங்குதார ணத்ததாகுதல், having common examples of as to be understood by all. 3. One of the eight வனப்பு, in composition, the proper choice of words. (See வனப்பு.) 4. Jaggary, coarse sugar சருக்கரை. (M. Dic.) (p.) அழகன், s. [fem. அழகி.] A handsome man. 2. [Per antonomasia.] The god Vishnu, honorifically, அழகர். அழகர்மலை, s. One of the hundred and eight places sacred to Vishnu. 2. One of the six places sacred to Subramania. அழகாரம், s. Brilliancy of expression, சித்திரமாகப்பேசுகை. 2. Mere, empty compliment, வீண்புகழ்ச்சியாகப்பே சுகை. (p.) அழகுகாட்ட, inf. To display one's beauty, ornaments, make a parade of dress, &c., 2. To make odd gestures, as children, &c., mimic, mock by gestures, கரகஞ்செய்ய. (c.) அழகுத்தேமல், s. A beauty spot. See தேமல். 35)

aẕuvm (p. 33) s. Extension, an extended surface, (of country, sea, &c.) an extended level, a plain, டாப்பு. 2. Country, நாடு. 3. Sea, கடல். 4. Muddy, slippery ground, வ ழுக்குநிலம். 5. A hill fort, துருக்கம். (திவா.) 6. Greatness, பெருமை. 7. Trembling, நடுக்கம். 8. A drum, முரசு. 9. A field of battle, போர் க்களம். 1. Various kinds of cakes, அப்பவரு க்கம். 11. avāntaram (p. 30) s. A void, vacuum, வெறுவெளி. 2. Interim, intermediate time or place, மத்தி; [ex அவ, et அந்தர, inner.] Wils. p. 83. AVANTARA. 3. A desolate or solitary state, உதவியின்மை. 4. Ruin, waste, அழிவு. அவாந்தரத்திலேயக்கினிபிறக்கிறது. Fire breaking out in the air. அவாந்தரமானவெளி, s. A desert plain, a wilderness. 15)

aviẕ (p. 31) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To loosen, slacken, untie, unbind, unpack, unfasten, unsew, முடியவிழ்க்க. 2. To cause to open, as the sun opens flowers. Humming insects are also described by poets as opening the flowers. மலரச்செய்ய. 3. To solve an enigma, unriddle, explain a difficulty, விடுகதைவிடுவிக்க. அவன்காலால்முடிந்ததைக் கையாலவிழ்க்கக்கூடாது. What he has bound with his foot, none can unbind with their hands; i. e. he is a crafty man whose schemes no body, though ever so skilful, can defeat. 13) *
