அசை
acai (p. 7) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To move, stir, tremble, ஆட. 2. To waver, quiver, totter, not being able to support a weight--as a slender waisted woman is poetically described to waver in walking, from the weight of her breasts, தள்ளாட. 3. (p.) To lodge, sojourn, dwell in an appropriate place-- as men in houses, towns, &c. beasts in the forest, fishes in water, &c., சஞ்சரிக்க. 4. (c.) To walk or ride for recreation, be active, be engaged in the performance of works, in distinction from the quiescence of the Gnani, உலாவ. 5. To be indolent, inactive, idle, சோம்ப. 6. Firmness, fixedness, immovableness. அசைவாட, inf. To hover, move or stir--as wind on the surface of water. அசைவு, v. noun. Shaking, moving, motion, அசைதல். 2. A kind of swinging shelf, ஊசல். 3. இளமை
iḷmai (p. 56) s. Youth, tenderness, immatureness, juvenility, infancy, இளமைப்பரு வம். 2. Indiscretion, immaturity of knowledge and intellect, illusion, உன்மத்தம். The opposite to இளமை is முதுமை. இளமையிலேபுண்ணியத்தோடேபழகு. Accustom thyself to virtue from thy youth. இளமையிற்கல். Learn from thy infancy. இளங்கதிர், s. Young ears of corn, பயிரினிளங்கதிர். 2. The early rays of the sun, இளங்கிரணம். 3. The sun early in the morning, உதையாதித்தன். இளங்கலையன், s. A species of paddy that ripens early, ஓர்நெல். இளங்கன்று, s. A young calf, சிறு கன்று. 2. A sapling, மரக்கன்று. இளங்காய், s. Green, unripe fruit, fruit just formed. இளங்கார், s. A kind of paddy which is reaped in the early part of the dark season, கார்நெல். இளங்கால், s. A tender skull, a thin skull, the hair of which early turns grey, the teeth of the person falling out prematurely. இளமத்தியானம், s. Towards mid-day. இளமலர், s. A bud about to burst. இளமழை, s. A light shower of rain, drizzling rain. இளமையோன், s. A youth, a young man. கட்டிளமையோன், s. A very young man--as மழவன். இளமைவழிபாடு--இளவழிபாடு, s. Fickleness, unsteadiness. 2. Elements, rudiments. இளம்பசி, s. Slight hunger--as between meals, easily relieved by light food, or fruit. இளம்பச்சை, s. Light green. இளம்பதம், s. Imperfectness, immaturity, moderateness in state or quality, இளமை. 2. A peculiar quality in medicinal oils derived from immature heat in some cases a defect, in others an excellence, இளம்பாகம். 3. A thin consistency obtained by melting, the first stage of melting, உருகுபதம். 4. The state of sweetmeats, pastries, or other kinds of food imperfectly cooked, வேகாப்பதம். 5. That which is plucked when immature--said of cocoanuts. இளம்பாடு, s. Sufferings of nonage, இளமையிற்படும்பாடு. 2. Immaturity, unripeness, imperfection, இளம்பதம். இளம்பிடி, s. A young female elephant, சிறியபெண்யானை. 2. A woman, a lady, பெண்; [ex பிடி, a female elephant whose stately movements a lady is poetically described to resemble in her gait.] இளம்பிள்ளை, s. A young child. இளம்பிள்ளைவாதம், s. A kind of rheumatism to which young persons are subject, a kind of pleurisy. இளம்புல், s. Tender grass newly shot forth, முதிராப்புல். 2. The அறுகு grass. இளவடி, s. Imperfect distillation, இளம்பதத்தில்வடிக்கை. இளவரசு, s. The prince regent who performs the functions of government when the king becomes disabled by age or otherwise, இராசகுமாரன். 2. The heir apparent, பட்டத்துக்குரியபிள்ளை. 3. A king in his minority, குழந்தைப்பருவமுடைய வரசு. (பாரதம்.) இளவல், s. A younger brother, தம் பி. 2. A lad, a youth, இளைஞன். இளவாடை, s. Gentle north wind. இளவாளிப்பு, v. noun. [prov.] Dampness, moisture. இளவுச்சம், s. [in astrology.] The situation of a planet a little before it reaches the meridian, உச்சத்திற்கணிமையா குகை. இளவுறை, s. Incipient or immature curds. இளவெந்நீர், s. Lukewarm water. இளவெயில், s. The early sunshine of the morning; also applied sometimes to the moderated rays of the evening, காலைவெயில். இளவெலும்பு, s. A tender, unhardened bone--as in children, முதிராவெலு ம்பு. இளவெழுத்து, s. An unformed hand-writing, the first writing of a child, படியாவெழுத்து. இளவேனில், s. The milder period of the hot season, including the months of April and May. See பருவகாலம். 6)
உவளு
uvḷu (p. 66) --உவள, கிறது, உவண்டது, உவளும், உவள, v. n. To be flexible, pliant, unable to support a weight--as a tender stalk. A lady's waist is thus poetically described as shaking or agitated in walking; to shake, wabble. See துவள. (p.) உவட்சி, v. noun. Shaking, moving, துவளுகை. (p.) 85)
என்
eṉ (p. 75) கிறேன், றேன், பேன், என்ன, v. a. To say, name, pronounce, express, do, indicate, either by words or signs, expressed, or implied, என்றுசொல்ல. This is the common form for quotation, in which sense it generally occurs in all its various uses. In the infinitive and other parts it is commonly found with one ன் only. என்கு. I say. என்கும். We say. என்ப--என்பர்--என்மர்--என்மனார்--என்றிசினோ ர். They say, they may say, some say, &c. அப்படியென்கிறான். So he says. 2. He does so (the speaker making the sign or sound intended). இல்லையென்கிறேன். I say no-implying impatience, displeasure, emphasis, &c. பணமில்லையென்கிறான். He says he has no money. போவென்கிறேன். I tell you to go, lit. I say go, and implying I have said so before. அவனைப்போவென்னப்போகிறான். When I say go, he goes. காமதேனுவென்கிறபசு. The cow (of the supernals) called Kamadhanu. நானென்னுமெண்ணம். Self conceit, consequence. என்பவன், appel. n. He who says so. 2. He who is called so. பெரியானென்பவன். Perian, or he who is called Perian. ஆவென்ன, inf. To open the mouth, lit. to say ஆ. ஈயென்ன, inf. To show the teeth, lit. to say ஈ. என்பிக்க, inf. To cause another to say, to prove, சொல்லுவிக்க. அதையவன்வாயினாலேயுமக்கென்பிப்பேன். I will prove it to you from his mouth. என்று. The gerund of the verb என், used instead of என the infinitive (which is the poetic usage in this connexion), it serves to end a quotation and to connect it with the following part of the sentence, in which case it often corresponds to the conjunction that, வினையெச்சம். அவனையடித்தேனென்றுசொன்னான். He said that he struck him, lit. he said, I struck him. Note 1st. In connexion with appropriate verbs, என்று, and என often mean to expect, to think, imagine, to suppose, to pretend, to desire, எண்ணுதல் or some such verb being implied; பணந் தெய்வமென்றுநடக்கிறான், he makes money his god; அதுபுகையென்றிருந்தேன், I thought it was smoke, I took it for smoke; அவர்வருவாரென்றிருக்கிறேன், I expect him to come; அவன்சொன்னானென்றுவந்தாயா, have you came because he told you?--Note 2d. According to நன்னூல், என்று and என are இடைச்சொல் or particles, with several specific uses, the other parts of the verb are or may be included. 1. With பெயர் or names; அழுக்காறெனவொரு பாவி, the sinner called envy. (குறள்.) 2. With குறிப்பு or symbolic forms; சிக்கென வூன்றியவேர், the root which has taken firm hold; திடீரெனவந்தான், he came suddenly. 3. With இசை or (imitative) sounds; ஒல்லெனவொலித்தது, it sounded ஒல்; அடுக் கு or repititive symbolic terms are included in this class; படபடென்றுநடுங்கி னான், he trembled (shook, shivered, &c.) greatly; சுஃஃறென்னுந்தண்டோட்டுப்பெண் ணை, the palmyras whose green leaves rustled (emitted the sound of சுஃஃறு). 4. With எண் enumeration, in which they are equivalent to the copulative conjunction; சாத்தனெனக்கொற்றனெனப்பூதனெ னமூவரும்வந்தார், Sattan, Kottan and Bhuta came; தேனென்றுபாலென்றுவமையில்லாமொழி, words unequalled (in sweetness) by honey or milk. 5. With பண்பு or symbolic terms expressive of quality and intensity; சிவேரெனச்சிவந்தது, it reddened to a crimson; வெள்ளெனவா, come in the grey of the morning; வெள்ளெனவி ளர்த்தது, it became very white.--Note 3d. என்று and என also serve to express similitude, like, as, &c.; புலியெனப்பாய்ந் தான், he sprang like a tiger; காந்தளெனக் கைநீட்டி, extending her காந்தள்-like hand. --Note 4th. என and என்று are also used to express pre-eminence, &c.; இன்னதென் றில்லை, it is no matter which; ஆரென்றுநி னைத்தாய், who do you suppose I am? I am not to be treated thus, &c., உயிரென் றுபார்க்கவில்லை, he does not (or did not) regard even life; அவனுக்கின்னாரென்றில்லை, it is no matter to him who; குருவென் றுபேணுகின்றிலன், he does not respect even the guru; எவ்வளவென்றில்லை, it is no matter how much. 2. How much soever, how little soever. 3. It is illimitable, undefined, the quantity is unknown; வாய்வயிறென்றுபார்க்கிறதில்லை, he does not give himself time to eat.--Note 5th. என and என்று are also used with reiterative symbolic terms; மடம்டென்றொலித்த து, it sounded மட, மட; அடியடியென்றடித் தான், he beat him soundly; தலைதலையென்ற டித்துக்கொண்டான், he beat his head greatly through rage, grief, despair, &c.; lit. saying, 'Head, head;' வாய்வாயென்றடிக்க, to beat one's mouth greatly--in sorrow, despair, &c.; எறியெறியென்றெறிந்தான், he threw many times; lit. he threw, saying, 'Throw, throw.'--Note 6th. என and என்று, with a dative imply, designed or appointed for, sacred or devoted to, for the sake of, &c.; சுவாமிக்கென்றுநேர்ந் தது, it is vowed (devoted) to God; தன்பிள்ளைக்கென்றுவைத்துக்கொண்டான், he kept it for his child; எனக்கென்றெடுக்கமாட் டேன், I will not take it for myself-Note 7th. The subjunctive என்றால் joined to verbs or used when verbs are implied forms the subjunctive of those verbs.--Note 8th. The subjunctive என் னில், poetically, என்னின், if, is contracted into எனில் and எனின், and in classical usage to எல் and என்: உம் joined to those forms makes them though; they are added to other verbs or to nouns; ஓரடி யென்கிலும்நட, walk, if it be but one step. 40)
குறள்
kuṟḷ (p. 132) s. Shortness, conciseness, abridgment, சிறுமை. 2. An imp or goblin, பூதம். (நிக.) 3. A metrical line of two feet. இருசீரடி. 4. A distish, or couplet of short lines, the first of four, and the second of three feet of இயற்சீர் and வெண்சீர், குறள்வெண்பா. 5. A celebrated poetical work by திருவள்ளுவர், in three parts; viz.: அறத்துப்பால், பொருட்பால், காமத்துப்பால். 6. Shortness in stature, dwarfishness குள்ளம்; [ex குறு.] குறளடி, s. A line consisting of two metrical feet. குறளடிவஞ்சிப்பா, s. A kind of வஞ்சி verse, consisting of three or more lines of two metrical feet each, together with a detached foot and an அகவற்சுரித கம். குறள்வெண்பா--குறட்பா, s. A distich of two metrical lines. See குறள். குறள்வெண்செந்துறை, s. A verse consisting of two equal metrical lones of four or more feet each. குறட்டரழிசை--குறளினத்தாழிசை, s. A verse of two unequal metrical lines of five or more feet each. குறளன், s. A short person, a dwarf. குறளி, s. A dwarfish woman. 2. A short, wicked shrew. 3. A kind of devil. 4. (Rott.) A prostitute. குறளிவித்தை, s. Magical tricks, legerdemain, juggling. 16)
சிங்காரம்
cingkāram (p. 181) s. (Sa. Srungara.) Ornamental decoration, embellishment, beauty natural or artificial, சிறப்பு. 2. [in rhet.] Love, the passion or sentiment, as an object of poetical description or dramatic representation. See இரசம். 3. Beautiful imagery in narration or description, அலங் காரவருணனை. See அலங்காரம். சிங்காரத்தோட்டம்--சிங்காரத்தோப்பு --சிங்காரவனம், s. A pleasure garden or grove. சிங்காரநடை, s. A graceful walk. சிங்காரக்கழு, s. [prov.] A kind of gallows for executing malefactors. (c.) சிங்காரஞ்செய்ய, inf. To embellish, decorate. சிங்காரப்பாய்ச்சல், s. [prov.] The lively, frisking movements of children, and others. சிங்காரப்பேச்சு, s. Flowery speech, ornamented discourse. சிங்காரமாய்ப்படித்துவந்தான். He has learnt well. இரண்டுநாளையிலேசிங்காரமாய்முடியும். It can easily be done in two days. [prov.] சிங்காரி--சிங்காரக்காரன், s. சுயம்
cuyam (p. 194) s. (Sa. Svayam.) Self; being; selfexistence, தானாகுகை. 2. Peculiarity, identity, individuality, ஏகத்துவம். 4. Natural habits--as opposed to acquired; reality, originality, genuineness, சுபாவம். 5. Spontaneity, சுயபுத்தி. 6. [prov.] Continuity, perpetuity, constancy, நிதம். சுயகருமம், s. One's own ceremony. சுயகாறுபாறு, s. One's own authority. (R.) சுயகர்த்தன், s. An independent lord. சுயகாரியம், s. One's own affair, private duty. சுயகாரிய துரந்தரன் பரகாரிய பராமுகன். One zealous, in his own business, but neglectful in that of others. சுயகுணம், s. One's own peculiar nature, temper, disposition. 2. Being natural to one, not affected. சுயகுரு, s. One's own guru, the guru of the family or caste. 2. Siva--as the guru, or enlightener of souls. சுயசாதி, s. One's own tribe. சுயசாதிமானம், s. Partiality for persons of one's own caste. Seem சுயசாதியபிமானம். சுயசினேகம், s. Self love, தற்சினேகம். (R.) சுயஞ்சோதி, s. The deity as having light in himself and enlightening souls. சுயதன்மை, s. Own peculiar nature; 'sui-generis.' சுயதேசம், s. One's own country--as சுதேசம். சுயநீலம், s. A genuine sapphire. சுயபாஷை, s. One's own language. சுயபாரபத்தியம், s. Arbitrary power. சுயபுணர்ச்சி, s. Self-pollution, onanism. சுயபுத்தி, s. One's own sagacity, poliey, discretion. 2. A right mind, sobriety, as opposed to derangement, intoxication, fascination, passion, &c. See சுபாவம். சுயபோக்கு, v. noun. One's peculiar nature, temper, disposition. சுயமனுஷாள், s. [prop. சுயமனுஷர்கள்.] One's own relatives. (Colloq.) சுயமாயாடுஞ்சூத்திரம், s. An automaton or self-moving machine. சுயமானபால், s. Unadulterated milk. சுயமாமிசம், s. One's own flesh, kindred. (Christ. usage.) சுயமாய், adv. Of one's own accord, spontaneously. 2. [prov.] Constantly. சுயமானவிவேகம், s. Original genius. சுயம்பாகம், s. Cooking. 2. Cooking for one's self. 3. [with. ஒரு.] Provisions, stores for a meal for one person. சுயம்பாகங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give rice for cooking, in charity. சுயம்பாகம்பண்ண, inf. To cook. சுயம்பாகி, s. [vul. சோம்பாகி.] A cook, மடையன். சுயம்பாட, inf. To make poetry naturally, as one endowed with poetical genius. 2. To make original poetry. (c.) 3. To alter a tune by new composition, flourishes, &c. சுயம்பிரகாசம், s. Original light as in the deity. 2. Original radiance--as of gems, &c., மணியின்கண்ணொளி, (p.) சுயம்பிரகாசன், s. The possessor of light, as enlightener--as சுயஞ்சோதி. சுயவலது, [vul.] One's own capacity or power. (c.) சுயவிருப்பம், s. One's own liking, own choice. சுயாதிபதி, s. An independent sovereign; [ex அதிபதி.] சுயாதிபத்தியம், s. Independent sovereignty, தன்னிஷ்டஆளுகை. சுயாதீனம், s. (also சுவாதீனம்.) Freeagency, independence. 2. One's own right, one's own property. 3. Freedom, liberty, emancipation--opposite to பராதீ னம்; [ex ஆதீனம்.] சுயாதீனன், s. A free agent, one who is his own master. சுயேச்சை--சுவேச்சை, s. Free will, liberty of choice; [ex சுய, et இச்சை.]
தவளை
tvḷai (p. 227) s. A frog, மண்டூகம், Ran&ae; Temporaria. There are different species, as கிணற்றுத்தவளை--சொரியாந்தவளை--மணற்றவளை--பச் சைத்தவளை, &c. (c.) தவளைகத்த, inf. To croak as a frog. தவளைக்கல், s. A rough stone, சொறிக் கல். தவளைக்குஞ்சு, s. A tadpole, a periwinkle. தவளைக்குறங்கு--தவளைக்கால், s. [in jewelry.] A kind of clasp in a chain, பணிப்பூட்டு. 2. A kind of iron hook. தவளைச்சினை, s. Frog's spawn. தவளைதத்த, inf. To hop or leap, as a frog. 2. To play at leap-frog. தவளைநுரை, s. Frog's froth, containing spawn. தவளைப்பாட்டு, s. Boy's song, about the frog. தவளைப்பாய்ச்சல்--தவளைப்பாய்த்து, v. noun. A frog's leap. 2. A poetical transposition of words, one of the four சூத்திர விலை, which see.
தானம்
tāṉam (p. 236) --ஸ்தானம், s. Place, location, situation, spot, station, இடம். 2. Home, abode, dwelling, residence, locality; natural situation, habitation; elements of a creature, &c., இருப்பிடம். 3. Any part or member of the body, any particular or special part, உயிர்நிலை. 4. Any of the five seats or situations of the soul in the body. (See அவத்தை.) 5. Any special place, as the residence of the king or chief, இராசஸ் தானம். 6. A sacred shrine, the interior or most sacred spot in a temple, &c., சர்ப்பக் கிரகம். 7. The world of Indra, as சுவர்க்கம். 8. Strength, power, firmness, வலி. 9. Stage of life-poetically considered, செய் யுட்பொருத்தம். 1. Any of the four seats or sources of the sounds of the letters, எழுத்துப்பிறக்குமிடம். 11. [in numeration.] Place or digit, எண்ணின்தானம். 12. [in astrol.] Any of the twelve signs consulted, for predicting one's fortune, in reference to the planets and their situation in the signs, கிரகநிலை. 13. Any of the five places in the zodiac with respect to any given planet. 14. [vul. for ஸ்நானம்.] A bath. 15. (R.) The upright posture of the images of Vishnu, in distinction from the sitting. தானம், 5. The five places are: 1. ஆட் சித்தானம், when the planet presides, (See under ஆள், v.) 2. உச்சதானம். when the sun is in Aries, the Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricornus, Mercury in Virgo. This is a very auspicious conjunction, four times better than the first. 3. நீசத் தானம், the position of the planets in the seventh place from the auspicious, உச் சம், and thought to be very bad. 4. நட் புத்தானம், the benign position of the planets. (See under நட்பு.) 5. பசைத்தானம். the malign position, causing continual hatred. See under பகை. தானம், 12. The twelve astrological signs are: 1. சென்மஸ்தானம், the rising sign at birth, having reference to fortune generally, according to the character and influence of the planets that may be in it. 2. வாக்குஸ்தானம், திரவியஸ் தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the second sign at birth as applying to the powers of speech, influence, learning, wife, &c. 3. சகோதரஸ்தானம், the third, referring to brothers and sisters whether there will be any, the good or evil they will do to the person, or he to them. 4. மாதுருஸ்தானம், மித்துருஸ்தானம், வாகனஸ்தானம், the forth, referring to the life of the mother, or friends. 5. புத்திரஸ்தானம், the fifth regards future offspring. 6. சத்துருஸ்தானம், உரோகஸ்தானம், the sixth shows whether the person will have enemies, and the evils to which he will be liable. 7. களத்திரஸ்தானம், குடும்பஸ்தானம், the seventh, referring to a wife and settlement in life. 8. மிருத்துஸ்தானம், ஆ யுஸ்தானம், the eighth, the limit of life. 9. தருமஸ்தானம், புண்ணியஸ்தானம், the ninth, referring to the extent of the person's liberality, &c. 1. கருமஸ்தானம், the tenth, conduct, character good or bad, &c. 11. இலாபஸ்தானம், பாக்கியஸ்தானம், the eleventh income, acquisition, wealth prosperity. 12. செலவுஸ்தானம், வியஸ்தா னம், the twelfth, prodigality or penuriousness, &c. தானக்கை, s. [prov.] Any vital part of the body, உயிர்நிலை. 2. Favorable situation of a place, தகுந்தஇடம். தானத்தான், s. A pujari in a Saiva temple, ஸ்தானீகன். 2. A hereditary chief, தலைமைக்காரன். தானப்புழு, s. Worms in the anus, causing irritation or itching. See திமி ரிப்பூச்சி. தானப்புழுக்கிண்ட, inf. To gnaw as worms in the anus, &c. [prov.] தானப்பொருத்தம், s. The fourth of ten items to be regarded in the choice of the first word of a poem--being the correspondence of its initial letter, with any of the five arbitrary divisions in which the initial of the name of the hero falls. The five தானம் are, 1. பாலன். 2. குமரன். 3. அரசன். 4. விருத்தன். 5. மரணம். which denote the five stages of life. nālu (p. 275) --நால், adj. Four, நான்கு. 2. (fig.) Many, general, multifold, universal, all, பல, as நாலுவித்தையும்.--Note. In combination before, க, ச, த, ப, the ல், becomes ற் and before ஞ, ந, ம, it is changed to ன்; sometimes to லா as நாலாகாரியமும், divers matters, various affairs, concerns, circumstances. நாலுகல்வியும். They faced him on all sides. நாலையும்பார்த்துச்செய்யவேண்டும். One should act with due consideration of the whole matter. ஆலும்வேலும்பல்லுக்குறுதிநாலுமிரண்டுஞ்சொல்லுக் குறுதி. As the splint of the banyan and வேல் trees gives strength to the teeth (by rubbing them), so நாலடியார், and குறள், give strength to the speech. நாலடி--நாலடியார், s. The title of a poetical book on morals having four lines to each verse, and four hundred verses; or the book which ascended, according to the legend, four feet against the stream of the river Veiga, at Madura. நாலாஞ்சடங்கு--நாலாநாட்சடங்கு, s. Bathing of the new married pair on the fourth day with the ends of their cloths tied together. நாலாமுறைக்காய்ச்சல், s. Quartan fever. நாலாம்வருணம், s. The Sudras; (lit.) the fourth caste, சூத்திரசாதி. நாலாயிரப்பிரபந்தம், s. Four thousand poems made by twelve ஆழ்வார்கள். நாலாவிதம், s. [appel. n. பிர பலப்பட்டவன்.] Becoming renowned. பிரபலமாக்க--பிரபலம்பண்ண, inf. To make illustrious, to spread one's fame. பிரபலமானவன்--பிரபலியமானவன், appel. n. As பிரபலன். பிரபலன், s. A famous or renowned person. பிரபவ, s. The first year of the Indian cycle; [from Sa. Prab'hava, origin.] பிரபா, s. As பிரபம் 2. [St. for பிர பை.] Light. பிரபாகரம், s. One of the six shastras. See சாஸ்திரம். பிரபாகரன், s. The sage who wrote பிரபாகரம். 2. The sun as the cause of light; [ex பிரபா et கான், who makes.] பிரபாகீடம், s. Dignity, majesty, preeminence, magnanimity as பிரதாபம். W. p. 574. PRAB'HAVA. 2. Glory, renown, fame, கீர்த்தி. 3. Light, splendor, lustre, ஒளி. பிரபோதம், s. Serenity, தெளிவு. 2. Knowledge, wisdom, ஞானம். W. p. 574. PRABOD'HA. பிரபோதசந்திரோதயம், s. A dramatic poem treating of the triumph of the good principle over the evil, ஓர்நூல். பிரமதம்--பிரமத்தம், s. Joy, gladness, intoxication, வெறி W. p. 575. PRAMADA. பிரமதாதிபன், s. Siva, சிவன். பிரமாணம், s. Measure, degree, quantity, limit, அளவை. 2. Oath, solemn declaration, ஆணை. 3. Time measured by the revolution of a planet--1st the time from its rising to its setting, called தினப் பிரமாணம். 2d. From setting to rising, called இராப்பிரமாணம். 3d. Time of the sun's passing from horizon to horizon, called அருக்கப்பிரமாணம். 4. Rule, method, criterion; ground of inference or belief, விதி. 5. Proof, testimony, authority, evidence, means of ascertaining truth, சாட்சி. 6. A logical inference, தருக்கநிரு ணயம். 7. Royal authority, sovereign command, இராசகட்டளை. 8. Scripture, a work of sacred authority, வேதம். 9. Illustration, example; that which is produced from some authority, called மேற் கோள். W. p. 575. PRAMAN'A. பிரமாணம், 8. Eight ways of obtaining the true knowledge of a thing or occurrence. See அளவை. கிரகணப்பிரமாணம். The extent of an eclipse, digits eclipsed. சத்தியப்பிரமாணம் A true oath. நியாயப்பிரமாணம். The law, a law-book. பிரமாணஞ்செய்ய--பிரமாணம்பண்ண, inf. To make oath, to swear. பிரமாணாதீதம், s. Beyond the limit of logical inference or ascertainment-spoken of the Deity, அளவைகடந்தது; [ex பிரமாணபாவம், s. Want of proper authority, law rule, proof, or illustration, திருட்டாந்தமின்மை 2. Endlessness; the state of being without measure, அள வின்மை; [ex அபாவம், negation.] பிரமாணிகம்--பிரமாணிக்கம், s. Truth, veracity, a true declaration, உண்மை. 2. An oath, ஆணை. (c.) பிரமாணிக்கன், s. A man of truth, உண்மையுள்ளவன். பிரமாணி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To judge, infer from premises, to deduce, நிதானிக்க 2. To enact, to lay down a rule, விதிக்க. 3. To estimate, அ ளவிட. பிரமாதம், s. Inadvertence, error, inaccuracy, failure, மோசம். W. p. 515. PRAMADA. 2. Dullness, மயக்கம். பிரமாததெய்வமல்லாததைத்தெய்வமென்றுநம்பு கிறது. Believing that to be God which is not. பிரமாதமாய்ப்போக, inf. To become careless, &c. பிரமியம், s. [a change of பிரமேகம்.] A noisome disease, gonorrh&oe;a, gleets. Any venereal affection, including many varieties, மேகவியாதி. W. p. 576 PRAMEHA. பிரமேயம், s. That which is known, அறி யப்படுவது. 2. A category or doctrine to be proved, பிரமாணிக்கத்தக்கது. 3. (c.) பிரயத்தனஞ்செய்ய--பிரயத்தினம்பண் ண, inf. To attempt, to endeavor, to exert energy. பிரயாகை,s. A sacred place of pilgrimage at Allahabad, the confluence of the Jumna and Ganges, with a supposed subterraneous addition from the Sarasvati river, திருவேணிசங்கமம். W. p. 576. PRAYAGA. பிரயாசம்--பிரயாசை, s. Endeavor, exertion, effort, முயற்சி. 2. Pains, labor, trouble, application, difficulty, hardship, struggle, உழைப்பு. W. p. 577. PRAYASA. (c.) பிரயாசங்காட்ட,inf. To be hard, difficult, laborious. பிரயாசப்பட--பிரயாசைப்பட, inf. To take pains, to try, to exert one's self, to endeavor. பிரயாசி, s. A laborious diligent person, male or female. பிரயாணம், s. Going, motion, a journey, travelling, வழிச்செல்கை. W. p. 576. PRAYAN'A (c.) பிரயாணகாலம், s. Time of departure. 2. Death, மரணம். 3. [fig.] The last journey, time of death, மரணகாலம். பிரயாணம்பண்ண, inf. To go on a journey. பிரயுதம், s. A million, பத்திலட்சம். W.p. 577. PRAYUTA. பிரயோகம், s. Discharge, as of weapons, emission, செலுத்துகை. 2. Main object, design, நோக்கம். 3. Use, application to a purpose, use of means, முயற்சி. 4. Contrivance, device, உபாயம். 5. Preparation, readiness, எத்தனம். 6. The operation of magical rites, எத்தனம் 6. PRAYOGA.--The most common compounds are அஸ்திரப்பிரயோகம், அவுஷதப்பிரயோகம், மந்திரப்பி ரயோகம், which see. பிரயோகஞ்செய்ய--பிரயோகம்பண்ண, inf. To discharge arrows. 2. To use a word, thing &c. 3. To have recourse to a remedy, a plan, or contrivance. 4. To form a scheme for a work. பிரயோகசாரம், s. A book on grammar, ஓர் இலக்கணநூல். பிரயோகவிவேகம், s. A grammatical treatise on Sanscrit words used in Tamil, ஓர் இலக்கணநூல். பிரயோகி, appel. n. A competent, capable man, சமர்த்தன். பிரயோகி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To emit, to discharge arrows; to shoot, செலுத்த. 2. To use, apply, employ, as words, வழங்க. 3. To have recourse to a remedy, or contrivance, முயல. பிரயோசகம், s. Advantage, utility, profit, as பிரயோசனம்; [from Sa. Prayojaka. W. p. 577.] பிரயோசகன்--பிரயோசனன்--பிரயோசி கன், s. One who receives advantage or profit. பிரயோசனம், s. [vul. புரோசனம்.] Profit, advantage, usefulness, ஆதாயம். 2. Reward good or bad, fruit or result of actions, செய்கையின்விளைவு. (c.) பிரயோசனப்பட, inf. [causat. பிரயோ சனப்படுத்த.] To be of use, turn to account or advantage. பிரயோசனப்பட்டவன், appel. n. A useful man. பிரயோசனம்பண்ண, inf. To do one a benefit to put one in the way of getting a livelihood. பிரலம்பம்,s. Hanging down; motion, waving, அசைவு. W. p. 577. PRALAMBA. பிரலாபம், s. Unmeaning speech,பய னில்சொல் W. p. 578. PRALAPA. 2. Lamentation, grief, புலம்புகை. பிரலாபசன்னி, s. A raving fit, அலறு சன்னி. பிரலாபி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To talk excessively and incoherently through grief; to lament, as a mourner, புலம்ப. (c.) பிரலோடனம், s. Rolling on the ground, revolving, உருளுகை. W. p. 576. PRALOD'HANA. பிரவசனம், s. A merchant, trader, வியாபாரி. பிரவருத்தனம்-பிரவர்த்தனம், s. Effort, exertion, taking measures, using means, exercise, endeavor, பிரயத்தினம். W. p. 578. PRAVARTTANA. பிரவர்த்தி, s. Engagement, activity, exertion, முயற்சி. பிரவர்த்தி, க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To exert, to use means for the completion of an object, முயற்சிசெய்ய. பிரவாகம், s. Inundation, flood, வெள் ளம். 2. Stream, rapid flow, torrent, நீரோட்டம். 3. Action, work, செய்கை. W. p. 579. PRAVAHA. பிரவாகி, க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To overflow, to destroy, as a flood, பெரு க்கெடுக்க. பிரவாளம், s. Red coral. See பவளம். பிரவிடை--பிரௌடை, s. A woman of middle age. See பருவம். பிரவிருத்தர், s. To increase, to be augmented, வளர. பிரவேசம், s. Entrance of a great person, with parade, உட்படுகை. 2. Intentness on an object, engagedness in a pursuit, மனம்பற்றுகை. 3. Entrance on, or progress in, a work, a study, &c., commencement, initiation, ஆரம்பம். 4. [fig.] Place of entry, வாயில். W. p. 58. PRAVASA. பிரவேசபரீட்சை, s. Entrance examination.
