ariṭṭam (p. 24) --அரிஷ்டம், s. Vinous spirit, toddy, &c., கள். 2. A crow, காக்கை. 3. Disaster, ruin, கேடு. 4. Evil portent to the child, or some of its relatives, from an unfavorable configuration of the planets at its birth, generally limited to a certain period of life, commonly under the sixteenth year, சென்மதோஷம். 5. உற்பாதம்
uṟpātam (p. 69) s. A portent, an evil omen--as a prodigy, or preternatural phenomenon, துர்க்குறி. 2. Any public calamity--as an earth-quake, hurricane, கொ டுமை. Wils. p. 144. UTPADA. 3. [vul.] Sometimes used for deep research, great discrimination, நுண்ணறிவு. (p.) ஒருவனிருவருதரத்துமுடனுற்பவித்தஉற்பாதம்வெருவி. kaṇam (p. 88) s. A particle, a trifle, சி றுமை. Wils. p. 183. KAN'A. 2. A minute portion of time, a moment, காலநுட்பம். 3. A measure of time equal to thirty கலை or four minutes, ஓர்காலஅளவு. wils. p. 261. KHAN'A. 4. A company, tribe, class, clan, flock, herd, a series, கூட்டம். 5. A body of troops. (See கணகம்.) Wils. p. 277. GAN'A. 6. Long-pepper, திப்பிலி. 7. A demon, vampire, பிசாசம். 8. [in astrology.] Asterisms classed under three heads as indicating human, infernal, and divine interference in their influence on the birth of children, நட்சத்திரங்களாற்குறிக்குமூவகைக் கணம். 9. The retinue of a deity, தேவக ணம். 1. One of the ten பொருத்தம், or series of poetry auspicious or the contrary according to the feet of which it is composed. The anger of those who have attained to the summit of virtue, though it is ever so transient, is hardly endurable-(குறள்.) கணநாதர்--கணநாயகர், s. The attendants of Siva, கணாதிபர். கணபதி, s. Ganesa, விநாயகன். கணப்பொருத்தம், s. One of the அட்டகணம். 2. One of the விவாகப்பொருத் தம். கணப்பொழுது, s. A moment, ச ணப்பொழுது கணமூலம், s. The root of longpepper. கணமூலி, s. The சாணாக்கி herb, Ocimum, L. கணாதிபன், s. Ganesa, விக்கினேசு ரன். 2. Siva, சிவன். கணேசன், s. Ganesa, son of Siva and Parvati--god of wisdom and remover of obstacles--whence he is invoked in all new undertakings. He is represented as a short man with an elephant's head and large belly, வினாயகன். Wils. p. 278. GAN'ESHA. விவாககணம்--வதுவைக்கணம், s. The correspondence between the constellations under which the bride and bridegroom were born. It is of three kinds, viz.: 1. தேவகணம், when both the bride and bridegroom are born under the following seven constellations, அச்சு வினி, அத்தம், அனுடம், இரேவதி, சோதி, புநர்பூசம் and மிருகசீரிடம். The union of such is regarded auspicious. 2. மனிதகணம், when they are born under the following eleven constellations, உத்திரம், உரோகணி, உத்திரட்டா தி, உத்திராடம், திருவாதிரை, திருவோணம், பரணி, பூசம், பூரட்டாதி, பூரம் and பூராடம். Or even if the former be of the first class, and the latter of the second, or vice versa, it is thought indifferent. 3. இராக்கதகணம், when they are born under the following constellations, அவிட்டம், ஆயிலியம், கார்த்தி கை, கேட்டை, சதயம், சித்திரை, மகம், மூலம், and விசாகம், it is thought indifferent; but should the first be of either of the former class and the second of the last class, or vice versa, it is thought inauspicious. இக்கணம், s. This instant, now. அட்டகணம்--அஷ்டகணம், s. [in poetry.] The eight kinds of ominous feet with which the invocation of the poem may begin, viz.: (1) நிலம் (ground), நிலக் கணம், a foot consisting of three நிரை; (which see)--as கருவிளங்கனி. (2) நீர் (water), நீர்க்கணம், a foot consisting of one நேர் and two நிரை--as கூவிளங்கனி. (3) மதி (moon), சந்திரகணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, and two நேர்; (which see)--as புளிமாங்காய். (4) இயமானன் (life, soul), இந் திரகணம், a foot consisting of three நேர்-as தேமாங்காய். A poem in which the invocation commences with any of the above four கணம், is believed by Tamulians to bring good luck to the hero of the poem. (5) சூரியன் (sun), சூரியகணம், a foot consisting of one நேர், one நிரை and one நேர்--as கூவிளங்காய்; this foreshows that the hero of the poem will soon become a coward. (6) தீ (fire), தீக் கணம், a foot consisting of one நிரை, one நேர் and one நிரை--as புளிமாங்கனி; this portends a loss of health. (7) வாயு (air), மாருதகணம், a foot consisting of two நேர் and one நிரை--as தேமாங்கனி; this foretells the loss of wealth. (8) ஆகாயம் (sky, expanse), அந்தரகணம், a foot consisting of two நிரை and one நேர்--as கருவிளங்காய்; this portends shortness of life. The last four கணம், are on the whole considered to be inauspicious. See சீர். பதினெண்கணம், s. The eighteen classes of dependent supernals, viz.: 1. அமரர், immortals, the inhabitants of Swerga. 2. சித்தர், a kind of gods. 3. அசுரர், demons. 4. தைத்தியர், another kind of demons. 5. கருடர், another kind of gods. 6. கின்னரர், celestial musicians. 7. நிருதர், a kind of demons. 8. கிம்புரு டர், a kind of celestial musicians who possess a human face and the body of a bird. 9. காந்தருவர், heavenly choristers. 1. இயக்கர், demigods who minister to gods, attendants particularly on குபே ரன். 11. விஞ்சையர், heavenly magicians. 12. பூதர், ghosts, familiar spirits. 13. பிசாசர், devils. 14. அந்தரர், wanderers. 15. முனிவர், sages, hermits, learned men. 16. உரகர், serpents. 17. ஆகாயவாசிகள், those who dwell in the air. 18. போக பூமியர், those who by the practice of virtue in this world have attained a residence in that of the particular principal deity whom they worshipped. They are ever blooming and young; their time of residence, however in this abode of happiness depends upon the merit they had acquired previous to their admission. நாற்கணம், s. The four classes of letters, viz.: 1. உயிர்க்கணம், vowels. 2. வன்கணம், the six hard-sounding letters. 3. மென்கணம், the six soft-sounding letters. 4. இடைக்கணம், the six middlesounding letters. கணம், s. A circle, வட்டம். 2. A ball, rotundity, திரட்சி 3. One of the eight kinds of diseases in children--a kind of hectic fever, ஓர்நோய். 4. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல். (p.) கணக்காய்ச்சல், s. kḷttirm (p. 99) s. A wife, மனைவி. 2. Family, race, குடும்பம். Wils. p. 2. KALATRA. (p.) களத்திரகாரகன், s. The planet regarded as the ruler of the seventh sign from the rising sign at birth, சுக்கி ரன். களத்திரதானம், s. The seventh from the rising sign at the moment of birth, portending the person's circumstances in respect of the wife (if it predict any), her disposition, wealth, longevity and other properties, ஏழாமிடம். 20)

kuṭumpam (p. 117) s. A family, including the man, his wife, his sons and his sons' wives, ஒருகுடியிலுள்ளார். 2. Relations, kindred, connexions, உறவின்முறையார். 3. Race, family, house, குடி. Wils. p. 226. KUT'UMBA. குடும்பங்கலைக்க, inf. To divide or scatter a family by sowing dissension, &c. குடும்பசம்ரக்ஷணை, s. The maintenance of a family; the act of providing for and preserving a family. குடும்பத்தானம், s. The sign next to the rising sign at the moment of one's birth, portending good or evil, wealth or otherwise, to the family, according to the character of the signs, &c. See தானம். குடும்பபாரம், s. The burden and responsibility of a family. குடும்பபாரஞ்சுமக்க, inf. To support a large family. குடும்பப்பிரதிட்டை, s. The founding of a family. குடும்பமாயிருக்கிறவன், s. One with a large family. குடும்பவமிசோற்பத்தி, s. Lineage, generation by families. *குடும்பி, s. A householder, the father of a large family, குடும்பத்தலைவன். Wils. p. 226. KUT'UMBI. *குடும்பினி, s. The wife of a householder, a mistress, a matron, the mother of a family, குடும்பத்தலைவி. Wils. p. 226. KUT'UMBINEE. குடும்பன், s. (fem. குடும்பி.) சன்னியாசம்
caṉṉiyācam (p. 174) s. Asceticism, abandonment of all worldly possessions and attachments, being the highest and last of the four brahmanical states. See ஆச் சிரமம். 2. Relinquishment, renunciation, துறவு; [ex சம், entirely, et நியாசம், casting away.] W. p. 891. SANNYASA. சன்னியாசந்தரிக்க, inf. To assume the state and garb of the சன்னியாசி. சன்னியாசமார்க்கம், s. The order of சன்னியாசி. 2. The perpetual bachelorhood of a person of good morals. சன்னியாசமுத்திரை, s. The distinctive marks of the சன்னியாசி, viz.: the staff, the waterpot, an unshaven beard, dishevelied locks, ochred clothes, &c. *சா, A compound letter composed of ச் and ஆ. 2. s. [ex Sa. Jya, to decay.] Death, mortality, மரணம். 3. Devil, பேய். 4. [in astron.] The chord of an arc; but commonly used for அர்த்தச்சா--the sine of an arc. 5. An equation of the centre--as மந்தச்சா. 6. The annual parallax, of a planet. See கற்கிச்சா and மகரச்சா. W. p. 355. JYA. சாக்காடு, s. Mortality, death, மரணம்; [ex காடு, a verbal affix.] சாக்காட்ட--சாக்காக்க, inf. [prov.] To wait on the dying, affording aid, performing appropriate ceremonies, &c. சாக்குருவி--சாகுருவி, s. A night-bird, sometimes a screech owl, whose hoot is supposed to portend death. சாக்குறி, s. Omens or presages of death. சாச்சடங்கு, s. Funeral ceremonies performed within the first week, especially, cooking and taking congy on the third day, and rice on the eighth.--Note. In some places food is sent by the relatives for three days. சாசங்காரம், s. The completing of an equation. சாபலம், s. [in astron.] Equation to the centre for any given time. சாபறை--சாப்பறை, s. A kind of drum for funerals. சாபிள்ளை, s. A still-born child. (c.) சாமுகுர்த்தம், s. [in astrol.] The முகு ர்த்தம் time, when several of the planets are in unfavorable situations. சாமூஞ்சி, s. A dismal, ghastly countenance, a death-like look. சாமூஞ்சிபட, inf. To be ghastly, as the face of a sick person. சாமேளம், s. A funeral-drum; the mode of beating a drum for a funeral. சாவறுதி, s. The point of death, the last extremity. 2. [prov.] Slightness, want of force and vigour; [ex அறுதி.] சன்னியாசம்பண்ண, inf. To renounce social or secular life for the wandering life of the ascetic. 2. To abandon earthly associations, worldliness, secularity, &c. சமுசாரசன்னியாசம், s. Celibacy. See under சமுசாரம். 3) *
சிலாப்பு
cilāppu (p. 186) கிறேன், சிலாப்பினேன், வேன், சிலாப்ப, v. n. [prov.] To idle away time instead of working properly, கழப்ப. 2. To make a mere show of giving, or to give but little; to make professions, and disappoint one; to portend rain and disappoint; to rain but scantily, வீணாகப்போக்க. சிலாப்பி, s. col (p. 212) s. Word, term, vocable, மொழி. 2. Saying, sentence, phrase, expression, passage, maxim, proverb, வாக்கியம். 3. Declaration, promise, assertion, command, assurance, உறுதிச்சொல். 4. Praise, encomium, panegyric, புகழ். 5. [in gram.] Parts of speech, பெயர்ச்சொல்முதலியன. 6. Toddy, fermented liquor--as inducing garrulity, கள். 7. Rice, paddy, நெல். 8. Fine rice, செந்நெல். 9. Ears of fine rice. நெற்கதிர். --Note. The parts of speech are four, viz.; 1. பெயர்ச்சொல், nouns and pronouns. 2. வினைச்சொல், verbs of both kinds. 3. இடைச்சொல், particles, as connectives, expletives, interjections, &c. 4. உரிச்சொல், adjectives and adverbs. Other specifications are included, as இயற்சொல். common words; திரிசொல், learned words; திசைச்சொல், provincial words, or according to the நன்னூல், words peculiar to or derived from any of the Tamil provinces around the Madura district, or form any of the Indian cognate languages; வடசொல் or வடமொழி, words of Sanscrit origin. அவனுடையபேச்சு காற்சொல்லுமரைச்சொல்லும்..... He speaks broken language; (lit.) half and quarter words. அப்படிச்சொல்லு. Say so--as a command; or as meaning--that is right. ஒருசொல்லுள்ளமனிதன்--ஒருசொல் வாசகன், s. A man steadfast to his word. சொல்லிற்பிழைதேட, inf. To detect a fault in speech. சொல்லணி--சொல்லலங்காரம், s. [in Rhetoric.] Figures founded in words, as distinguished from figures of thought. (See மடக்கு, &c.) 2. Elegance of expression. 3. Correct pronunciation. 4. Empty politeness, mere professions of kindness, உபசாரவசனம். சொல்லழுத்தம், s. Emphasis,--Note. Strictly speaking there is no increased meaning given to a word in Tamil, by a stress laid upon it; this is done by intensitive particles. சொல்லறுதி, s. Decisiveness in selling, making an offer, striking a bargain, &c. சொல்லாட, inf. To utter words, speak, talk. (p.) (குறள். chap. 82.) சொல்லாதசொல், s. Improper, indecent, uncourteous, offensive language. 2. Things improper to be told, secrets, &c. சொல்லாளி, s. One faithful to his word. 2. An eloquent person. (c.) சொல்லானந்தம், s. Unlucky or inauspicious use of a word, as portending evil to the hero of the poem. சொல்லிணக்கணம், s. [in grammar.] The chapter on words; etymology. சொல்லின்முடிவினப்பொருள்முடித்தல், v. noun. Confining the author's meaning to the finishing word or phrase, one of the thirty-two உத்தி. (p.) சொல்லின்பம், s. Euphony. சொல்லுக்குச்சொல், s. Returning abusive language. (c.) சொல்லுதவி--சொற்சகாயம்--சொற்று ணை. s. Aid by words--as recommendation. சொல்லுறுதி, s. Certainty, positive declaration, a averment, &c., as to a fact, event, &c. 2. Keeping one's word, faithfulness to one's promise. சொல்லுரிமை, s. A fine emphatic expression. சொல்லுரை, s. Explanation of a word --an adopted phrase. சொல்லேருழவர், s. (plu.) Poets, the powerful in language, புலவர். 2. King's ministers, மந்திரிகள்; (lit.) those who plough with words. சொல்வகை, s. Classification of the parts of speech. 2. Proper method of speaking, as of a teacher, barrister, &c., stating a question. சொல்வல்லபம், s. Power of language, ability of speech, eloquence. சொல்வழிகேட்க, inf. To be obedient. சொல்வளம், s. Fluency in words, readiness in speaking. 2. Copiousness of language. சொல்வண்மை, s. Eloquence, power of language. 2. Emphasis. 3. Distinctness of language. சொல்விளம்பி, appel. n. Verbal mistake, etymological error. சொற்குற்றம்வாய்க்குற்றம், s. Trivial mistakes in words. சொற்கேட்க, inf. To wait or attend on one. 2. To be obedient, listen to, regard, obey. சொற்கேளாப்பிள்ளையினால்குலத்துக்கீனம். The disobedient child will bring disgrace on the family. சொற்சாதுரியம், s. Eloquence. சொற்சித்திரம், s. A quibble, pun, play on words. சொற்சிமிட்டு, s. [prov.] The use of a little word or particle, easily overlooked yet materially affecting the meaning. 2. Artfulness, dexterity or ingenuity in the use of words. சொற்சிறப்பு, s. Superiority of one word over another to convey the author's meaning, or to suit the connection 2. Verbosity, bombast. சொற்சுவை, s. Choice selection of words. சொற்சோர்வு, v. noun. Faltering in speech. 2. Fault or error in discourse, either inadvertently, or intentionally. சொற்பட, inf. To succeed; to increase or yield--as grain, வாய்க்க. (p.) சொற்படி, According to one's word, command, promise. சொற்பயன், s. Meaning of a word. சொற்பாடு, v. noun. (with நேர்பாடு.) Occurring, as predicted at random. சொற்பிழை, s. Verbal mistake, a slight verbal error, &c. 2. The wrong use of a word. சொற்புணர்ச்சி, v. noun. Combination of coalition of words. சொற்புணர்ச்சிஇலக்கணம், s. Syntax. சொற்புத்தி, s. Advice, admonition. சொற்பொருள், s. Meaning of words. சொற்பொருள்விரித்தல், v. noun. Employing such terms as may exactly convey the author's meaning one of the thirty-two உத்தி. சொற்றவறாமை, s. Keeping one's word. சொற்றிருத்தம், s. Correct orthography and pronanciation, distinct articulation. 2. The correction of a mistake in pronunciation. சொற்றிருந்த, inf. To reform in speech. as a child or foreigner, who had previously failed; to become correct in speech. சொற்றொடர்நிலைச்செய்யுள், s. As அந் தாதி, which see. சொன்மாலை, s. tttu (p. 223) s. Springing forward, or hopping. moving by jerks--as cockroaches, or cattle tied by the fore-feet, பாய்தல். 2. Peril, misfortune, மோசம். 3. [in astrol.] Reckoning, for the horoscope, the transition of a planet from one point to another, omitting the signs which portend in one's life, as shewn by the horoscope, ஆபத்து. 5. [improp. for தத்தம்.] Adoption, சுவிகாரம். (c.) பெரியதத்திலேயிருக்கிறது. It is in great danger. காலமோதத்தோ. Is it the appointed time? (for death)--asked of an astrologer when consulted, concerning one bitten by a snake. இந்தத்தத்துக்குத்தப்பித்துக்கொண்டான். He has narrowly escaped the danger. தத்துக்கல், s. A stone obstructing water in a fall, from which it leaps anew. தத்துக்கிளி. A grasshopper, a locust. 2. A chattering parrot. தத்துப்புரட்சி, v. noun. Passage of a planet from one point to another, leaving several signs between and another immediately following. தத்துப்பூச்சி, s. A brown spotted, leaping insect, with long antenn&ae;, in form like a cockroach. தத்துமீள, inf. To out-live a juncture indicated as critical in one's horoscope. 2. [prov.] To save one, as a doctor, at a critical period. தத்தெறிய, inf. To make ducks and drakes, on water by skimming the surface with a stone. (c.) 2. To cast up waves as the sea. 43)

tī (p. 242) adj. Evil, wicked, sinful. தீக்குணம், s. Evil disposition or practice; vice, evil, துர்க்குணம். Vices are of three classes, of மனம், வாக்கு, and காயம். 1. மனத்தீக்குணம், sins of the mind, as (a) கொலைநினைக்கை, murderous intention; (b) காமப்பற்று, libidinous desire; (c) ஆசை, avarice, ambition. 2. வாக்கின்தீக்குணம், sins of the mouth--as (a) பொய்சொல்லல், lying; (b) கோள்சொல்லல், tale-bearing; (c) கோபித்துச்சொல்லல், angry speaking; (d) பயனில்சொல்லல், trifling or vain discourse. 3. காயத்தீக்குணம், sins of the body--as (a) களவாடப்போதல், thievish practices; (b) வறிதேதொழில்செயல், idleness; (c) கொலை செயல், killing, murder. தீக்குணர், s. (plu.) The vile, the wicked. 2. The base, the low, (p.) தீக்குறி--தீச்சகுனம், s. A bad sign, symptom or omen, துன்னிமித்தம். தீக்கோள், s. A malignant planet, an evil portent, துர்க்கிரகம். See கோள். தீச்சொல்--தீமொழி, s. Slander, evil speaking, பழிச்சொல். (சது.) 2. Inauspicious or evil words; as curse, சாபம். தீத்தொழில், s. Evil practice, evil deeds. (நாலடி.) தீயது, appel. n. A bad or evil thing. தீயர், s. (Malayalim.) A low caste or tribe--oppos. to நாயர், high caste. தீயொழுக்கம், s. Evil conduct, a vicious course of life--oppos. to நல்லொ ழுக்கம். தீயோர்--தீயர், s. (plu.) The base, the vulgar, கீழ்மக்கள். 2. Savages, barbarians, மூடர். 3. Hunters those that live by the chase, வேடர். தீவினை, s. Evil deeds, vile conduct. wickedness, பாவம்; [ex வினை.] 4)
பஞ்ச
pañca (p. 290) --பஞ்சம், adj. Five-fold, ஐந்து. W. p. 493. PANCHAT or PANCHAN. பஞ்சகச்சஞ்சொருக, inf. To tuck up the cloth in five ways. See சொருகு, v. பஞ்சகச்சாயம், s. Five kinds of cakes. பஞ்சகதி, s. The five paces of the horse. See துரககதி. பஞ்சகந்தம், s. The five aromatics. See கந்தம். பஞ்சகம், s. Any thing of five parts. பஞ்சகம்மாளர், s. [also பஞ்சாளர்.] The five castes of mechanics. See கம்மாளர், under கம். பஞ்சகர்த்தாக்கள், s. The five deities, or forms of deity performing operations for the benefit of souls. 1. பிரமா, creator, or evolver of the universe; 2. விட்டுணு, preserver, who furnishes each soul with its allotted portion of jois, and sorrows, as the results of former actions; 3. உருத்திரன், destroyer, reducing souls and worlds to their primitive elements; 4. மகேசுரன், obscurer, darkening the understanding, that the soul may act, and work off its accumulation of moral evil, so as to become ripe for salvation; 5. சதாசிவன், enlightener of illuminator, who imparts divine grace, and prepares the soul for emancipation, and union with the deity. See பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், under கிருத்தியம். பஞ்சகலாத்தானங்கள், s. The five parts of the body touched by the gurus in giving தீட்சை. பஞ்சகலை, s. The five developments of the soul in its beatification are; நிவிர்தி, பிரதிஷ்டை, வித்தை, சாந்தி,சாந்தியாதீதம். (தத்துவ.) பஞ்சகல்யாணி, s. A horse whose feet and forehead are white. See கலியாணி. பஞ்சகன்னியர், s. The five famous women worshipped by females, as able to confer benefits. See கன்னிகை. பஞ்சகாவியம், s. The five ancient classic poems. See காவியம். பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், s. The five operations performed by five பஞசகர்த்தாக்கள். See ஐந் தொழில், கிருத்தியம். பஞ்சகுரோசஎல்லை, s. The same mixture is administered to the woman after child-birth; also sprinkled on the child at the time of purification. பஞ்சகொ?வியப்பிராசினம். [in politics.] The five means of accomplishing one's object; 1. மித்திரபேதம், sowing discord among friends; 2. சுகிர்லாபம், associating with equals; 3. சக்திவிக்கிரகம், associating with a foe and ruining him; 4. அர்த்தநாசம், spending one's property to gain an object; 5. அசம்பிரெட்சியம், acting without inquiry, examination, &c. பஞ்சதந்திரக்கதை, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. W. p. 493. PANCHANAKHA. பஞ்சநகக்கூர்மையோன், s. A tortoise as having five divisions in its claws. பஞ்சநதி, s. The Punjaub having five rivers, as famous for sacred bathing. பஞ்சநிம்பம், s. The five parts of the Neem, or Margosa tree; the flowers fruit, leaves, bark and root; [ex நிம்பம், margosa.] பஞ்சபட்சி, s. The five birds for augury. See பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், under காதல். --The letters, அ, இ, உ, எ, and ஒ, are applied to the birds, and the following accidents, உண்டி, feeding, நடை, walking, அரசு, governing, தூக்கம், sleeping, and சாவு; dying. பஞ்சபட்சிக்காதல், s. A treatise on augury. பஞ்சபட்சிவேளை, s. Augury from the eating, sleeping, walking, governing and dying of the five birds, between the full and the new moon. 2. An auspicious hour, ascertained by augury. பஞ்சபர்வங்கள், s. Five religious ceremonial days in each fortnight. பஞ்சபாணம், s. [alsoஐங்கணை.] The five arrows of Kama consisting of five kinds of flowers; வனசம், lotus; 2. குதம், mango; 3. அசோகு, ashoka; 4. முல்லை, jasmine; 5. நீலம், blue water lily. பஞ்சபாணன், s. Kama, the god of love, as armed with the five arrows, காமன். பஞ்சபாணாவஸ்தை, s. A kind of vessel of five plates collectively, or made of five metals, used by advanced religionists, to hold water for purification, பஞ்சலோக பாத்திரம். 2. (R.) The centre piece of this vessel. பஞ்சபூதம், s. The five elements; earth, air, fire, water, and ether. பஞ்சபூதஅணு, s. The five atomic bases. See பரமாணு under பரமம். பஞ்சப்பிராணன், s. The five vital airs constituting life--commonly reckoned ten. See வாயு. பஞ்சமகதி, s. Final bliss, liberation from births and absorption in the deity --there being four other states, மோட்சம். பஞ்சமகாயக்கியம், s. The five special sacrifices or oblations. The last five of the lunar days; a death occurring on the first of these is portentous of death to five others in the house, or it vicinity; on the second day to four others, &., on which account, if the death occur on the first day, the corpse is carried out through a hole made in the wall, the house is vacated for months, and various ceremonies are performed to appease the incensed goddess, அவிட்டமுத லைந்துநாள், commonly தனிஷ்டபஞ்சமி. 3. The five lettered incantation, சிவாயநம, which see. பஞ்சாக்கினி, s. The five fires amidst which the devotee performs austerities. one toward each quarter and the sun over-head; or, according to others, a fire in the centre. 2. The five mystic fires in the body, given as இராகம், கோபம், காமம், சடம், தீபனம். Compare தீ. பஞ்சாக்கினிமத்தி, s. The centre of an area in which are five fires, as a place for the performance of austerities. பஞ்சாங்கம், s. An almanac embracing five things; lunar days or phases of the moon, திதி; solar days or week, வாரம்; periods of the asterisms, நட்சத்திரம்; the yogas, யோகம்; and karnas, கரணம்; [ex அங்கம், member, அ becoming ஆ in combination.] பஞ்சாங்கங்கணித்தல்--பஞ்சாங்கம் எ ண்ணுதல், v. noun. The castor-plant whose leaves resemble the five digits, ஆமணக்கு; [ex அங்குலம்.] பஞ்சாசயம், s. The five receptacles in the body are: ஆமாசயம், the stomach; 2. இரத்தசயம், the heart; 3. கர்ப்பாசயம், the womb; 4. சலாசயம், the bladder; 5. மலாசயம், rectum. பஞ்சாக்ஷரம், s. As பஞ்சாக்கரம். பஞ்சாமிர்தம்--பஞ்சாமுதம், s. The five delicacies; milk, curds, ghee, sugar, and honey. (in Wils.) 2. (R.) A mixture of plantains, cocoa kernel, milk, sugar and honey, used in anointing an idol. பஞ்சாமிலம், s. An aggregate of the five acids, jujube. இலந்தை; pomegranate, மாதளை; sorrel, புளியாரை; emblica, நெல்லி, citron, எலுமிச்சை; [ex ஆமிலம்.] W. p. 494. PANCHAMILA. பஞ்சாயுதம், s. The five weapons of Vishnu; the discus, club, chank, bow and sword. 2. [prov.] A gold ornament worn by children or women, on the neck with the tali, bearing in relief the five weapons of Vishnu. It is of two kinds, அரசிலைப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one made in the form of fig-leaf; வட்டப்பஞ்சாயுதம், one in a circular form, ஓராபரணம். பஞ்சாயுதபாணி-பஞ்சாயுதன், s. Vishnu, as bearing the five weapons. பஞ்சார்க்கம், s. Five phenomena of the heavens constantly recurring in connexion with the planets; regarded as exerting planetary influence of an unpropitious character taken into account in astrological computation, viz.: 1. தூமம், smaoke; 2. விதிபாதம், one of twentyseven astrological yogas; 3. வில் or இந்திரவில், rainbow; 4. பரிவேடம், halo; 5. சேது, the descending node. பஞ்சார்க்கதோஷம், s. Distress, suffering, sorrow, துன்பம். 6. Any thing refreshing, soothing, gratifying, குளிர்ச்சி. பனிக்கண்திறந்தால் மழைக்கண்திறக்கும். If dew fall, it will soon rain. பனிக்கட்டி, s. Hard frost, உறைந்த பனி. 2. Snow, உறைந்தமழை. 3. As உறைந்தநீர். பனிக்காலம், s. Dewy season. பனிக்கொட்டுதல், v. noun. Dew falling heavily. பனிக்கதிர், s. Moon, the cool rayed, சந்திரன். (சது.) பனிக்காடு, s. Thick fog. பனிக்காற்று, s. [also ஊதற்காற்று.] Cold wind in the dewy season, commonly impregnated with dew. பனிக்குடம், s. [prov.] The uterus. See பன்னீர்க்குடம். பனிக்குடமுடைதல். The coming away of the waters at a birth, passing of the amniotic fluid. பனிச்சாமை, s. A species of சாமை grain. பனிதாங்கி, appel. n. A kind of herb, ஓர்பூடு. பனித்திவலை--பனித்துளி, s. Dew drop. பனிநத்தை, s. A snail prevalent in the dewy or rainy season. பனிநீங்குதல், v. noun. Dew Vanishing. பனிநீர், s. [com. பன்னீர் which see.] Rose water, or other liquid perfumery, also serum and water of the amnion. பனிப்பகை, s. The sun, as the foe or dispeller of dew or fog, சூரியன். பனிப்படலம், s. A thick embankment, or expanse of fog. பனிப்பயறு, s. A kind of pulse. See பயறு. பனிப்பருவம், s. They dewy season former and latter. See பருவம். பனிப்புகார், s. A. mist of dew, haze or fog. பனிப்புழு, s. Small grub, caterpillar, blight in vegetation in the dewy season. 2. A very small worm causing itching between the toes in the dewy season, சேற்றுப்புழு. பனிப்பூங்காரம், s. Mist or fog when the sun shines. பனிப்பூடு, s. A kind of herb. பனிப்பெயர்தல், v. noun. Dew going to fall. பனிப்பெய்தல், Dew falling. பனிப்பெய்துகுளம்நிரம்புமா. Will a tank be filled by the falling of the dew? பனிமலை, s. The Hymalaya range of mountains, as covered with snow, இம கிரி. (சது.) பனிமூடுதல், v. noun. Over-spreading of fog, &c. பனிமேகம், s. A light cloud in the dewy season, not portending rain, வெண் மேகம். பனிமேய்ச்சல், v. noun. Grazing, as some animals in the mornings of the dewy season. 2. [in cant.] Enjoying sensual pleasures to satiety. பனிமொழி, s. Soothing, gratifying discourse, soothing words, குளிர்ந்தசொல். 2.
