aṉaiya (p. 33) --அன்ன. The crude form of a symbolic verb derived from the demonstrative அ, having two distinct uses. As a term of similitude, it is an affix but regularly conjugated in two forms, being complete in each, in all it persons, varieties and uses, as a verb, a participle, a noun, &c., the same as other symbolic verbs. It also expresses likeness to the person or thing indicated by the word to which it is affixed, உவம வுருபு. 2. It is sometimes equivalent to the simple pronoun; as, அன்னான். Such a man. (p.) Singular. அனையன்--அனையேன். I am like. அனையாய்--அனையை. Thou art like. அனையன்--அனையான். He is like. அன்னான். Such a man. அன்னாள். Such a matron. அன்னது. Such a thing. Plural. அனையெம்--அனையேம்--அனையோம். We are like. அனையிர்--அனையீர். Ye are like. அனையர்--அனையார். They are like. அன்னர்--அன்னார். Such persons. அனைய--அனையன--அன்ன. They (things) are like. அனையமன்னற்கழிவுமுண்டாங்கொலோ? Can such a prince ever be ruined? பவளமனையவாய். The coral-mouthed. எம்மனோர்க்கியம்புமாறரிதே. It is not possible for mortals like me to declare, &c. மயிலன்னாய். You who are (elegant) as a peacock, (addressed to a lady.) 128)

arumai (p. 26) s. Rareness, scarceness, scantiness, அபூர்வம். 2. Preciousness, desirableness, pre-eminence. மேன்மை. 3. Difficulty, laboriousness, வருத்தம். 4. Impossibility, unattainableness, கூடாமை. 5. Delicacy, சிறப்பு.--Note. As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Extreme hunger from long abstinence, &c., பட்டிணி. அருங்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be in a starving condition. அருங்கேடன், s. One who is imperishable, who will always prosper. (குறள்.) 2. (c.) A very treacherous man, a profligate wretch. அருங்கோடை, s. Vehement heat. 2. Severe drought. அருஞ்சிறை, s. Rigorous servitude, கடுஞ்சிறை. (Ram.) 2. Hell, நரகம். அருநரகம், s. A cruel hell. அருநிலை, s. Difficult standing said of a ford when impassable. அருநிழல், s. A slight shade. அருநெறி, s. A narrow or difficult way. 2. Gate-way or entrance. அருந்தமிழ், s. Elegant Tamil. அருந்தவம், s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

aṟi (p. 33) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To know, understand, comprehend, recognize, be acquainted with; have a carnal knowledge of, தெரிய. (c.) புத்தியறிந்தபெண். A marriageable girl. வல்லமையறிவோம். We will find out which is the most competent, (by way of bravado.) தன்னையறியுமறிவேயறிவாகும் பின்னையறிவது பேயறி வாமே. To know one's self is knowledge, other knowledge is inferior. அறிகருவி, s. The organs of sense. அறிகுறி, s. A sign, mark, token, symbol. அறிஞன், s. A man of knowledge, especially of divine things, அறிவுடையோன். 2. A poet, புலவன். 3. A sage, முனிவன். 4. Mercury the planet, புதன். 5. Buddha, புத்தன். அறிதுயில், s. A kind of sleep or meditation, in which the person understands all that passes about him--an attribute supposed to belong to the gods and sages, especially to Vishnu. அறிதுயிலமர்ந்தமூர்த்தி, s. Vishnu, திருமால். அறிமடம், s. Indisposition to reduce to practice what is learned. 2. Inability to recall to memory, stupidity in learned persons from infatuation. 3. Feigned ignorance. அறிமுகம், s. Acquaintance with persons (and in vulgar use) with things, slight familiarity. அறியக்கொடுக்க, inf. To inform against one, indict, impeach. 2. To communicate information, instruction, &c. அறியாமை, neg. v. noun. Ignorance. அறியாவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation--as when one asks for information. அறியொண்ணாமை, neg. v. noun. The impossibility of knowing. அறிவினா, s. One of the six forms of interrogation; questioning in order to teach. அறிகை, v. noun. Knowing, understanding, knowledge, உணர்வு. 50)

ākācam (p. 35) --ஆகாயம், s. Air, ether, பஞ்சபூதத்தொன்று. 2. The sky, the visible heavens, வான். Wils. p. 13. AKASHA. 3. One of the eight கணம், (see கணம்,) a measure in poetry of three அசை, two dissyllabic, and one monosyllabic--as கரு விளங்காய். ஆகாசகமனம்--ஆகாயகமனம், s. Passing through the air. 2. An art supposed to be acquired by the power of incantations and magical medicaments--one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். ஆகாசகருடன்--ஆகாயகருடன், s. A creeper, கொல்லங்கோவை, Bryonia epigea. ஆகாசகரை--ஆகாசக்கரைக்கட்டு-ஆகாசபாலம், s. A fancy, chimera, deception, மனோராச்சியம். ஆகாசகாமி--ஆகாயகாமி, s. One of the three kinds of horses--that which has power to walk through the air. ஆகாசக்கத்தரி--ஆகாயக்கத்தரி-ஆகாயவழுதுணை, s. A plant yielding an edible fruit, Hibiscus longifolius, L. ஆகாசக்கல் s. An atom from the airy regions which it is supposed strikes the eye, which does not recover till the same hour next day, ஆகாசத்திற் பறக்குமணு. ஆகாசத்தாமரை, s. A water plant, Pistia stratiotes, the roots of which float in the water, அந்தரத்தாமரை. 2. (fig.) An aerial or sky-lotus; i. e. a fanciful or ideal thing, absurdity, impossibility, பொய். ஆகாசபட்சி, s. The sky-lark, சா தகப்புள். ஆகாசமண்டலம், s. The aerial regions, வானமண்டலம். Wils. p. 13. AKASHAMANDALA. 2. A kind of dancing, ஓர்கூத்து. ஆகாசமயம், s. Emptiness, that which is void of substance. ஆகாசமார்க்கம், s. The aerial way as passed by gods, by the planets, and other heavenly bodies regarded as gods; and by men who by austerities, incantations, magical rites, &c. have acquired superhuman powers. ஆகாசவல்லி, s. A running plant, ஓர்கொடி, Menyanthes cristata. (Roxb.) ஆகாசவாசிகள், s. The inhabitants of the ethereal regions, ஓர்தேவ கணம்--One of the eighteen கணம். ஆகாசவாணி--ஆகாயவாணி, s. A voice from heaven, an oracle delivered by an invisible being, அசரீரிவாக்கு; [ex வாணி, speech.] Wils. p. 13. AKASHAVAN'I. ஆகாயப்பிரவேசம், s. The power of self-concealment, in the ether of the atmosphere, by means of magical spells --one of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், which see. 13)

ām (p. 39) s. One of the poetic expletives, சாரியை. 2. An expletive, அசைநிலை. 3. A termination of the first person plural, in verbs of both classes, தன்மைப்பன்மைவி குதி. 4. A termination of the plural of verbs embracing the first and second person, உளப்பாட்டுத்தன்மைப்பன்மைவிகுதி. 5. A contraction of ஆகும், used to denote a quotation--as பெரியவனாம், it is said 'he is great.' 6. A contraction of the future of ஆ, in the third person neuter. 7. A particle of assent, yes; it is often doubled --as ஆம் ஆம், written, ஆமாம், and contracted to ஆமா. 8. A particle of comparison, ஓர் உவமவுருபு--as அல்லாங்குழலாள், a woman whose hair is black as darkness. (p.) வந்தாம். We came. பணியுமாமென்றும் பெருமை. Greatness is always humble. நானும் நீயுஞ்சென்றாம். I and you went. ஆங்காலம், s. The season when fortune favors and all things prove successful. ஆந்தனையும்--ஆமளவும். As much as possible. ஆமாறு, s. The proper manner of doing a thing, ஆகுமுறை. (p.) ஆமானவன், s. A worthy, competent respectable person, சிறந்தவன். (c.) ஆம்படி. In the manner which is agreeable to, or sufficient for. ஆம்புத்தி, s. Good or suitable advice, discrimination, cleverness, skill. ஆம்போலே. Agreeably to, possibly, perhaps. மண்ணாங்கட்டி, s. A clod. 10)

iṉi (p. 57) adv. Now, immediately, presently, இப்பொழுது. 2. Henceforth, hereafter, பின்பு. 3. A particle of place, from this limit, onward, இப்பால். (நன்னூல்.) இனிக்கள்ளமில்லை. There is no more injurious, offensive matter, &c., no longer any alloy, spuriousness, &c. இனிக்காரியமில்லை. There is no further business. There is no more hope for him--said of a dying man, &c. இனிநம்மெல்லை. We are now close on our limit; we approach our boundary. இனிப்பிழைக்கிறதா? Can he possibly survive? (he will certainly die). இனிப்பேசு. Now you may speak, there is no longer any restraint. இனிப்போதும். Now there is enough. இனிமேல். Hereafter, at some future time. இனியார்? Who else? இனியாற்றாது. I am unable to proceed further (I am altogether exhausted). இனியெங்கேபோவாய்? Whither will you go next? What further resource is left you? இனியென்னசெய்வாய்? What can you do further? இனிவேண்டாம். It is needed no longer, or no more is required. பண்டறியேன்கூற்றென்பதனையினியறிந்தேன்.... Formerly I knew not, but now I know who Yama is. (குறள்.) 46)

iyl (p. 48) --இயலு, கிறது, இயன்றது, இயலும், இயல, v. n. To be able, be possible, கூடியதாயிருக்க. 2. (p.) To be incident to, be exposed, பொருந்த. 3. To agree, suit, be adapted to, இசைய. 4. To be done, performed, made or composed, ஆக. 5. To be destined, decreed, allotted, விதிக்கப்பட. 6. To happen, pass, to be in vogue, நடக்க.-Note. This word is often changed to ஏலு both in poetry and in the colloquial language. இயல்வதுகரவேல். Do not refrain from doing what is in your power. வெயிலியல்வெஞ்சுரம். The parched desert exposed to the scorching beams of the sun. தச்சனாலியன்றவீடு. A house made by the carpenter. என்னாலியலாது. I am not able, I cannot do it. 9)

irṇṭu (p. 49) s. and adj. Two, இரண்டா மெண்.-- As an adjective prefix, it often becomes இரு and ஈர், double, இரட்டிப்பான-as இருநிறம், two colors, a double color; ஈர லகு, two syllables. See அலகு. இரண்டிலொன்றுசொல்லு. Say either this or that. நாடிரண்டுபட்டது. The country is divided into two factions. இரட்ட, inf. To double, repeat a motion, sound, action, &c., to reiterate. See இரட்டிக்க. இரட்டாங்காலி, s. [prov. prop. இரட்டைமரம்.] A double tree--especially of the palmyra species. இரட்டி, s. Double quantity, twice as much, இருபங்கு. அதற்கிரட்டிதருவேன். I will give double the quantity. பத்திரட்டி, s. Twice ten. இரட்டிக்க, inf. To double, repeat, reiterate, இரட்ட. 2. (c.) To return --as a disease, வியாதிமக்களிக்க. 3. To plough the second time, always crosswise, இரண்டாமுறையுழ. 4. To differ from, be discrepant, &c., வேறுபட. 5. To disagree--as different kinds of food eaten at once, to be indigested, போசனம் ஒவ்வா திருக்க. இந்தச்சாட்சியந்தச்சாட்சிக்கிரட்டிக்கிறது. This evidence differs from the other. மகரமிரட்டித்தது. The consonant ம், is doubled. நோயிரட்டிக்கின்றது. The pain is double what it was. 2. The disease has returned. இரட்டித்தசெலவு, s. Double expense. இரட்டித்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To repeat, say a thing a second time. 2. To make a discrepant statement, or a statement different from that of another. உழவிரட்டிக்க, inf. To plough the second time. இரட்டிப்பு, s. Two-fold, twice as much, a double quantity. 2. v. noun. Doubling, making two-fold. இரட்டு, s. Two-fold, இருமடங் கு. (p.) 2. (c.) Double-threaded cloth, either coarse or fine, sack-cloth, ஓர்வ கைச்சீலை. இரட்டுப்பை, s. A sack made of coarse cloth. இரட்டுறமொழிய, inf. To state a rule so that it may comprise another, the one plainly apparent, the other to be made out by study; or the use of terms of double meaning either of which serves to make good sense, though the ideas will be wholly different; or the use of terms by which one thing is employed and another implied. See உத்தி. (p.) இரட்டை, s. Two things naturally conjoined--as a double fruit, leaf, &c.; twins, two things alike, இரண்டொன் றானது. 2. (p.) Gemini in the zodiac, two females, மிதுனராசி. 3. Even, even numbers--opposed to ஒற்றை, இரட்டையெண்-as 6, 8, 24, &c. 4. A couple, tow, சேரடு. 5. A female songster, பாடுவிச்சி. ஒற்றையிரட்டைபிடித்தல். A kind of play, playing at odd and even. இரட்டைக்கிளவி, s. Double words imitating certain sounds, ஒலிக்கு றிப்பில்வருமிரட்டைமொழி--as சளசளவெனமழை த்தாரைகான்றன. (The clouds) poured a shower of rain, with a murmuring sound. (இராமா.) (p.) இரட்டைச்சுழி, s. The symbol ை of the vowel ஐ. 2. Two curls in horses, cattle, &c.--as இருசுழி. இரட்டைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the same word is repeated through the line, (see தொடை)--as ஒக் குமே யொக்குமே யொக்குமே யொக்கும் விளக்கினு ட்சீறெரியொக்குமே யொக்கும் குளக்கொட்டிப்பூவி னிறம், the color of the flower of the water-plant கொட்டி, resembles the delicate flame of the lamp. (p.) இரட்டைப்படவெண்ண, inf. To count even, making a series increasing by a common ratio--as 2, 4, 6, &c. இரட்டைப்பாக்கு, s. An arecanut with two eyes producing, if planted, two trees. இரட்டைப்பிள்ளை, s. Twins. 2. [prov.] A double young areca or cocoa-nut tree. இரட்டைப்புரிக்கயிறு, s. A rope or string made of two strands. இரட்டைமணிமாலை, s. A poem consisting of twenty verses of வெண்பா and கலித்துறை, or நேரிசைவெண்பா and ஆசி ரியவிருத்தம், and composed according to the rules of அந்தாதி. See பிரபந்தம். (p.) இரண்டகம், s. Treachery, perfidy, duplicity, dissimulation, double-dealing, துரோகம். (c.) இரண்டகம்நினைக்க, inf. To frame a treacherous design. இரண்டகம்பண்ண, inf. To betray, act treacherously, perfidiously. இரண்டகவாதி, s. A treacherous person, an insincere friend, துரோகி. இரண்டன்மை, s. Sameness, (lit.) being not two--as அத்துவைதம், which see. இரண்டாந்தரம், s. Secondary kind or class--as of cloth, tobacco, &c. 2. The second time. இரண்டாம்பட்சம், s. Second or secondary class, kind, &c., not the most approved. இரண்டாம்பாட்டன், s. A great grand-father, மூதாதை. இரண்டாவது, s. That which is the second. 2. adv. Secondly. இரண்டுக்குப்போக, inf. [vul.] To go to stool, (usage of children.) இரண்டுக்குற்றது, s. Critical juncture, a crisis in a disease, சாத்தியமோவசர த்தியமோவென்பது. 2. Dubiousness, possibility of two contrary impending issues, a double probability, இதுவோவதுவோவெ ன்கை. இரண்டுங்கெட்ட நேரம், s. [vul.] The dusk of the evening, used for an inauspicious or untimely season, &c. இரண்டுங்கெட்டவன், s. An indifferent man, neither good nor bad. இரண்டுசொல்ல, inf. To evade, refuse, give an indirect or evasive answer. இரண்டுசெய்ய, inf. To act perfidiously. 2. To act against one's command, to behave disobediently. இரண்டுநினைக்க, inf. To be hypocritical, to meditate treachery under a show of honesty. இரண்டுபட, inf. To vary from, differ in the issue or event, disagree, dissent, become opposed, வேறுபட. 2. To be discrepant, appear discordant, &c., ஒற்றுமையின்றாக. 3. To be doubtful, ஐயுற. இரண்டுபடுத்த, inf. To disjoin, disunite, cause to differ, sow dissension. இரண்டுபண்ண, inf. To act treacherously. இரு. Two, as இரண்டு and ஈர். இருகந்தம், s. Good and bad smell, இருமணம். (p.) இருகால், s. [vul. இருக்கால்.] Twice, இரண்டுவிசை. 2. Two feet, இருதாள். இருகாழி, [prov. இருக்காழி.] A palmyra or இருப்பை fruit with two kernels, இரண்டுகொட்டையுடையகாய்; [ex காழ், seed.] இருகுறணேரிசைவெண்பா, s. A நேரிசைவெண்பா, consisting of two குறள் வெண்பா, and a foot affixed to the second line for the sake of harmony, ஓர் வகைவெண்பா. (p.) இருக்கால், s. A certain cast of the dice in playing a game, கவற்றிற்குறித் தவோரெண். (c.) இருசமயவிளக்கம், s. A controversial treatise on the merits of Saivaism and Vishnuism, ஓர்நூல். இருசமயவிளக்கச்சூறாவளி, s. A treatise written in confutation of the above. இருசீரகம், s. The two different kinds of சீரகம்--as நற்சீரகம் and கருஞ்சீரகம், which see. இருசுடர், s. The two lights--the sun and moon, சூரியசந்திரர். (p.) இருசுடர்த்தோற்றம், s. One of the divisions of பெருங்காப்பியம், சூரியசந்திரோத யங்களின்வருணனை. (p.) இருசுழி, s. A double curl as a mark. இருசுழியிருந்துண்டாலுமுண்ணும் இரந்துண்டா லுமுண்ணும். A person of a double curl may live in luxury or be reduced to beggary. இருதலைக்கொள்ளி, s. A brand burning at both ends. ஒருதலைக்கொள்ளிநடுவிலெறும்பைப்போலானே ன். I am like an ant between two fires; i. e. I am in straits. இருதலைப்பட்சி, s. A kind of bird fabled to have two heads. இருதலைமணியன், s. A snake said to have two heads--one at each end. இருதாரைக்கத்தி, s. Two-edged sword or knife. இருதிணை, s. The two classes உயர்திணை and அஃறிணை into which Tamil nouns are divided. (See திணை.) 2. The two classes into which creatures are divided, இயங்குதிணை and இயங்கரத்திணை, which see. (p.) இருநிதிக்கிழவன், s. Kuvêra, கு பேரன். (p.) இருநினைவு, s. Double-mindedness, oscillating or wavering disposition. இருபது, s. Twenty, (lit.) twice ten, ஓரெண். இருபாவிருபது, s. A poem consisting of ten வெண்பா and ten அகவல் stanzas, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். (p.) இருபிறப்பு, s. [literally.] Two births, இருசனனம்--said of persons or things twice born--as 1. The moon, சந்திரன். 2. Birds and other oviparous creatures, முட்டையிற்பிறப்பன. (See அண்ட சம்.) 3. The teeth, பல். 4. Feathers, சிறகு. 5. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். (p.) இருபிறப்பாளர், s. The twiceborn caste--Brahmans; investiture with the sacred thread being deemed a kind or regeneration, அந்தணர். இருபெயரொட்டுப்பண்புத்தொகை, s. Omission of ஆகிய or ஆய where two nouns are used in opposition, ஓர்பண்புத் தொகை--as ஆதிபகவன். God the source (of all things.) இருபொருள், s. Learning and riches. See பொருள். (p.) இருமடங்கு, s. As much again, two-fold, இரண்டுபங்கு. இருமடியாகுபெயர், s. The two states --the present and the future, or this life and that to come--whether as distinct from the body or as reunited with it in another birth, இம்மைமறுமை. (p.) இருவகைத்தோற்றம், s. The two classes of beings produced--சரம் and அச ரம். See தோற்றம். (p.) இருவாட்டித்தரை, s. [prov.] Land compounded of earth and clay, மணலுங் களிப்புமானநிலம். இருவாய்க்குருவி, s. A kind of bird, Hormbill, buceros, ஓர்குருவி. இருவினை, s. The two classes of moral actions--good and evil, in every one of which there is merit or demerit, leading to future births in which they are to be suffered or enjoyed, while they keep the soul from union with deity, நல்வினை தீவினை. (p.) ஈர். An adjective of இரண்டு, two --used before words beginning with vowels, &c., as இரு is used before consonants--as ஈராயிரம், two-thousand; இருபது, twenty. ஈரசைச்சீர், s. A poetic foot of two அசை, ஆசிரியச்சீர். (p.) ஈரடி, s. Two lines, இணையடி. (p.) 2. That which is bifurcate or two forked, கவர். 3. Doubtfulness, fluctuation, சந்தேகம். ஈரடிப்பயன், s. Ambiguity in conversation, equivocation, double-mindedness, உபயார்த்தம். 2. Double-dealing, acting under-handedly so as to suit both parties, கபடம். 3. Uncertainty, doubtfulness, சந்தேகம். 4. [prov.] Diverseness, disagreement--as of a report or account differently related, விகற்பம்; [ex அடி, step, course, et பயன், meaning.] ஈரடிப்பா, s. A stanza of two lines. (p.) ஈரடிமடக்கு, s. [in poetry.] Repetition of a foot or feet in two lines with different meanings, வந்தசொல்லேயிரண்டடி யினும்வரப்பாடுவது. See மடக்கு. ஈரடிவெண்பா, s. A kind of வெ ண்பா of two lines--the குறள்வெண்பா. (p.) ஈரடுக்கொலி, s. Reiterated words imitative of sound--as நெறுநெறென்றுமுறிந் தது, it broke with a reiterated crash; வண்டில்கடகடென்றோடிற்று, the carriage rolled along with a rattling noise. (p.) ஈரறம், s. The two kinds of அறம், or virtuous actions according to the shasters; viz.: இல்லறம், matrimony and its accompanying household virtues; and துறவறம், the virtues of ascetic practice. (p.) ஈரறிவுயிர், s. Beings that have the sense of feeling and tasting--as snails, shells, &c., பரிசமுஞ்சுவையுமறியும்நந்துமுதலிய செந்து. (p.) ஈராசிடைவெண்பா, s. A species of வெண்பா, with two ஆசு affixed to the end of the third foot of the second line. (p.) ஈராடி--ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] A changeable state of the wind and weather, previous to the change of monsoon, indicative of rain. 2. A calm, a lull, the failing of the wind at this season, காற்றினமைவு. 3. Fickleness, hesitation, fluctuation of mind, நிலையின்மை. இக்காரியத்திலென்மனமீராடிப்படுகின்றது. In this affair my mind wavers. ஈராட்டி, s. [prov.] Two wives. ஈரி, s. A play of girls, two stones being taken up from the ground while a third is tossed in the air, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. (c.) ஈரிலைப்பயிர், s. A young shoot when two leaves appear. ஈரிழை, s. Double-thread used in some kinds of cloth--as in muslin. ஈரிழைச்சல்லா, s. A muslin whose warp consists of two untwisted threads. ஈரீற்றா, s. A cow that has had two calves. (p.) ஈருடல், s. [in mythology.] Beings possessing the form, in part, of two bodies--as Vishnu manifested in the form of man and lion, இருதன்மைத்தாயவுடல். (p.) ஈருயிர்க்காரி, s. The two-lived --used of a pregnant female. (c.) ஈரெச்சம், s. See எச்சம். ஈரொட்டு, s. Uncertainty, doubt, crisis, criticalness, state of suspense, conditional bargain. (c.) நோயாளியின்காரியமீரொட்டாயிருக்கின்றது. The case of the patient is doubtful. ஈரொட்டாகச்சொல்ல, inf. To speak doubtfully, uncertainly, ambiguously. ஈரொட்டாகவாங்க, inf. To take things conditionally, that is, if approved; or, as a merchant, to pay for them if sold. 6)

il (p. 55) . Not, non-existence, death, மரணம். (p.) 2. The root of one of the negative symbolic verbs, (see அல்) expressive of total or exclusive negation of the thing or quality--the opposite of உள். Sometimes in poetry it stands as a contraction of இல்லை. இற்றிறம்பிலர். They fail not in the performance of domestic duties; [ex இல், house; திறம்பு, failure; இலர், who are not.] இணையில்நெஞ்சமே. O! incomparable mind; O! mind debased beyond comparison. இலி, s. A person, or thing possessed of nothing. பிறப்பிலி, s. He who is without birth--the Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. Siva, சிவன். (p.) இறையிலி, s. He who is exempt from taxes; [ex இறை, tribute; இல், not; இ, affix.] இந்தநிலமிறையிலி. This field is not taxed. இல்பொருள், s. An impossibility, an absurdity, இல்லாதபொருள். இல்பொருளுவமம்--இல்லுவமை, s. [in rhetoric.] Comparison with a thing that does not exist, உவமையணியி லொன்று--as எல்லாக்கமலத்தொழிலுந்திரண்டொ ன்றின் வில்லேர்புருவத்துவேனெடுங்கணல்லாண் முகம்போலும், the beauty of the face of the damsel whose eyes resemble a lance, and brow, a bow, is equal to the aggregate beauty of all lotuses. இல்லாதபொய், s. Downright lie, முழுப்பொய். இல்லாதவன், neg. appel. noun. One utterly destitute. இல்லாததும்பொல்லாதுஞ்சொல்ல, inf. To tell lies and speak evil of one. இல்லாமல், ver. part. Without. இல்லாமற்போனால், If not, otherwise. இல்லாமலிருக்க, inf. To be without, be wanting, be absent. இல்லாமை, neg. v. noun. Absence, destitution, privation, இன்மை. 2. Poverty, want, தரித்திரம். இல்லார்--இல்லோர், s. The poor, the destitute, those who are in want, தரித்திரர். இல்லெனல், v. noun. Death, extinction, சாதல். 2. Denying, இல்லையென் றசொல்லல். இல்லை, s. Negation, இன்மை. 2. A defective verb implying absolute negation, added to nouns, pronouns, verbs or participles. 3. Death, extinction of life, சாதல். இல்லையாகியவென்மகற்காண்பன். I shall see my deceased son. இல்லையாகில்--இல்லையென்கில்--இல்லையெ ன்றால். If not, or else, otherwise. வருகிறையோ இல்லையோ? Will you come or not? ஒருக்காலுமில்லை. Never. இதுவுமில்லை--அதுவுமில்லை--இரண்டுமில்லை. Neither this nor that, neither of the two. ஒற்றுமில்லை. Nothing. துப்புறவில்லை--பரிச்சேதமில்லை. Not at all. அளவில்லை. Beyond measure, immeasurable. இன்னதென்றில்லை. It is not described what it is, no matter what. இவ்வளவென்றில்லை. It is unascertained, not estimated, not measured. இல்வழக்கு, s. Unjust lawsuit, பொய்வழக்கு. எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time. அருளிலார், s. Those devoid of benevolence. இன்றி, v. part. from the root இல். Without. தாமதமின்றி. Without delay. ஒருபிரயாசமுமின்றி. Without labor, or difficulty. பாவமின்றிநடக்கிறது அரிது. It is difficult to live without sinning. 23)

īṭu (p. 58) s. Equivalent, substitution, vicarious retribution, fruit, result, பிரதி. 2. Comparison, equal, match, ஒப்பு. 3. Reward, recompense, compensation, remuneration, satisfaction, கைம்மாறு. 4. I have not the means to do so much. வினைக்கீடாகவனுபவமுண்டாம். Enjoyments and sufferings will accord with the deeds done within the periods of former births. அதற்கீடாகவிதுகொடுக்கிறேன். I give this for or instead of that. அவளுக்கவனீடல்ல. He is not a suitable match for her. ஈடழிய, inf. To suffer the loss of power, dignity, wealth, &c., to become poor, பெருமைகுன்ற. ஈடழிவு, v. noun. Loss of power, property, dignity, &c., சீர்கேடு. ஈடன், s. A strong, competent, wealthy man, பெருமையுடையோன். ஈடன்பாடஞ்சான். A wealthy man will not fear losses. ஈடாட, inf. To compete with another, நேர்நிற்க. 2. [prov.] To be loose--as a tooth, a nail, the spokes of a wheel, to joggle, உழல. ஈடாட்டம், v. noun. Competing or matching with another. 2. Pecuniary ability, the free use of money--as by a rich merchant, கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல். 3. Being loose--as a nail, &c., உழலுகை. ஈடுகட்ட--ஈடுபண்ண, inf. To give security, பிணைகொடுக்க. 2. To make amends, restitution, reprisals, &c., to identify, ஈடுசெய்ய. ஈடுகொடுக்க--ஈடுசெலுத்த, inf. To reward, give an equivalent, to content, பதிலளிக்க. 2. To bear, tolerate, endure, yield, &c., ஈடுகட்ட. அவனுக்கீடுகொடுக்கமுடியாது. It is impossible to give him satisfaction. வீடுபலக்கக்கட்டினாற்புயலுக்குமீடுகொடுக்கும். If the house be strongly built, it will endure the storm. அவனுக்கிவனீடுகொடுக்கமாட்டான். This person cannot compete with him. ஈடுபாடு, s. Loss and gain, நய நஷ்டம். 2. Substitution, ஒப்பு. ஈடேற, inf. To be emancipated from sin, births, &c., to obtain final happiness, உய்ய. 2. To be saved from ruin and be rendered secure, to rise from indigence to prosperity, to be completely rescued from distress, difficulty, danger, disease, &c., வாழ்வடைய. கன்னிகையீடேறிவிட்டாள். The girl has attained a marriage settlement. அந்தக்குடியீடேறிவிட்டது. That family is rescued from indigence, saved from ruin. &c. ஈடேற்ற, inf. To deliver, rescue, இரட்சிக்க. 2. To raise one from distress, indigence, &c. to the attainment of the desired good, to promote, to establish in good circumstances. வாழ்வடை யச்செய்ய. 3. To redeem, emancipate from births, &c., மீட்க. ஈடேற்றப்பட, inf. To be saved, delivered, rescued from ruin indigence, distress, &c., to be rendered secure against danger, &c., இரட்சிக்கப்பட. ஈடேற்றம், s. Final and eternal happiness, the liberation of the soul from the body and its exemption from further transmigrations, and translation to a permanent state of happiness, final emancipation, பேரின்பவாழ்வு. 2. Deliverance from a state of suffering, indigence, &c., உய்வு. 3. The marriage of a destitute girl under favorable auspices, கன்னிகையீடேற்றம். ஈட்டுக்கீடு, s. Like for like, retaliation, requital. கடையீடு, s. Ground the lowest in value and assessment. தலையீடு, s. A very fruitful soil, known to be such by its aspect. 6)

um (p. 63) . A connective particle variously used, ஓரிடைச்சொல். 1. எதிர்மறையும்மை, the use of உம் with an affirmative, or negative expressing probability, possibility, &c., and implying the possibility, &c., of the contrary--as, சாத்தன்வருதற்குமுரியன், Sattan may perhaps come; அவன்வரவுங்கூடும், It is possible that he may come. 2. சிறப்பும்மை, the உம் of speciality, including உயர்வுசிறப் பும்மை, or superiority and இழிவுசிறப்பும்மை, or inferiority--as, ஞானிகளுமறியார்கள்சித்திரநதிமூல ம், Even the sages are unacquainted with the source of the சித்திரம் river; இவ்வூர்ப்பூனை யும்புலாறின்னாது, Even the cats of this place will not eat flesh (so sacred is it, so vile is the practice); பார்ப்பானுங்கள்ளுண்டான், Even a Brahman has been drinking toddy; இவனைநாயுந்தேடாது, Even a dog will not regard him. 3. ஐயவும்மை, the உம் in doubt, uncertainty, indecision, equivocal forms, probability, possibility--as, அவர்பத்தாயினுந் தருவார்பதினைந்தாயினுந்தருவார், Perhaps he may give ten or he may give fifteen; மழை பெய்தாலும்பெய்யும், It may perhaps rain; பத் தானுமெட்டானுங்கொடு, Give ten, or eight, ten would be preferred, but eight may do; வரினும்வருவான், It is probable that he may come. The உம் is often suppressed. 4. எச்சவும்மை, இறந்ததுதழீஇயவெச்சவும்மை, எதிரதுதழீ இயவெச்சவும்மை, the use of உம் implying another person, thing, or event, understood, and meaning likewise, too, even--as, அவனும் வந்தான், He also is come (implying that another is come or expected); நாம்பாடவும் வேண்டும், We must sing also (as well as dance, &c.); கேட்டும்படிக்கவேண்டும், By inquiry also we must learn (as well as by other means). 5. முற்றும்பை, indicating the whole of a number or series, universality, totality--as, ஒருவருக்குமையமில்லை, None can doubt; எங்குமில்லை, no where; இருகண்ணுஞ் சிவந்தன, both eyes reddened; எவ்விடமும், every where; இரண்டையுங்கொண்டுவா, Bring them both; எல்லாரும், எவரும், ஆரும்வந்தார், all, whoever, &c. came; மிகுந்தநாலுபணத்தை யுந்தா, Give me the remaining four fanams; மூவரும், all the three persons. 6. எண்ணும் மை, a numeral connective, corresponding with, and commonly repeated with each word of the series; நீயுமவனும்வந்தீர்கள், You and he came. The particle is sometimes joined to the last only--as, சாத்தன், கொற்றன், பூதனும் வந்தார்கள், Sattan, Kottan and Poodan came. Sometimes it is wholly omitted, and a pronoun including the series used instead--as, சாத்தன்கொற்றன்இவர்கள்வந்தார்கள். Sometimes the last noun in the series is used in the plural--as, சாத்தகோற்றவர்வந்தார்கள். 7. தெரிநிலையும்மை, the உம் of ascertainment, clear perception, or decision, used of three or more things concerning which doubt has been entertained, but which is now cleared up--as, ஆணுமன்றுபெண்ணுமன்று, It is neither male nor female (but in hermaphrodite); அவருண்பதுசோறுமல்ல, பணிகாரமுமல் ல, சாகமூலபலாதிகள், His food is neither rice nor cakes, but leaves, roots and fruits, &c. 8. ஆக்கவும்மை, உம் expressive of a change of state--as, பாலுமாயிற்று, This milk became medicine also; வலியனுமாயினான், He has become even a strong man. The above eight are given in நன்னூல். 9. உம் joined to an infinitive implies விரைவு, the immediate occurrence of the event--as, துரைகட்டளையிடவுங்காரியஞ்செய்துமுடிந்தது, As soon as the magistrate gave the order, the thing was done; அவர்சொல்லவுமுலகங்களுண் டாம், As soon as he speaks worlds appear. The உம் is often omitted, but then it is less expressive--as, நானிதைச்செய்யெனச்செய்கிறான், I say this and he does it. 1. உம் added to a verbal noun in poetry, sometimes gives it a gerund-like succession of the event--as, காண்டலுமிதுவேசொல்வான், Seeing him he spoke thus; வருதலுந்தழுவிக் கொண்டான், As soon as he came he embraced. 11. உம் is associated to the social ablative with the same meaning--as, கடுங்கணைதொடுத்தலோடும், As soon as the swift arrows were shot. 12. உம் added to the infinitive serves for optative, especially in epistolary usage but not in good style--as, தாங்கள்மறுமொழியனுப்பவும், May you please to send an answer; இப்படிச்செய்யவும், May you do so, I wish you to do so. 13. உம் added to the following forms of a verb, செய்து, செய்யின், செய்தால், has the force of though, although--as, அவனறிந்தும்வரவில்லை. Though he knew, he did not come; சொல்லி னும் or சொன்னாலும்அவன்கேளான், Though you may tell him he will not listen. 14. உம் added to இல் or இன் forms of the fifth case gives the force of the comparative degree --as, கந்தனினும்வலியனே, He is even stronger than Skanda. 15. A token of reproof, menace, anger, &c., also of attention, assent, doubt, non-compliance, &c., (see ஊம்)--as, உம்மெனத்தெழித்துரப்ப, He reproved his rashness by uttering the menacing sound உம் (ஸ்காந்தம்); கதைசொல்லுகி றேன்உம்கொட்டிக்கேள், I am going to tell you a story, show that you listen by saying உம்; உம்மெனுமார்பைத்தட்டும், The guilt of Brahmanicide manifested in a phantom threatened by saying உம் and striking on its breast (திருவிளையாடல்). 16. A termination of the imperative plural, முன்னிலைப்பன்மைவி குதி-- as, நீவிர்சொல்லும், say ye. It is often used honorifically in imperative singular --as, கடவுளேநீரிரங்கும், God be merciful. 17. A termination of verbs third pers. pres. or fut. tense sing. number, also of neut. plurals--as அவன்செய்யும், He does or will do it; சிங்கங்கள்முழங்கும், The lions roar, or will roar, செய்யுமென்முற்றுவிகுதி. 18. A modification of the pronoun நீர் when it is declined in the different cases--as, உம்மை, உம் மால், &c. 19. The termination of the future relative participle, எதிர்காலப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as, உலகாளும்அரசர், Kings who govern the world. 2)

urai (p. 65) s. Utterance, speaking, speech, பேச்சு. 2. A word, an expression, a sentence, a declaration, a saying, மொழி. 3. Explanation, interpretation, commentary, exposition, gloss, verbal renderings, &c., வியாக்கியானம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. [in native lexicons.] The words for which synonymes of meanings are given, also the generic term of which the species are given, சொற்பயன். 6. Sound, ஒலி. 7. Eminence, உயர்ச்சி. 8. The written word, sacred writings, holy writ, as one of the three means of attaining knowledge, வேத மொழி; several kinds of உரை, or modes of explanation are given by Tamil Grammarians. The author of காரிகை has given four, viz.: 1. கருத்துரை, the main sentiment or scope of the text explained, also called தாற்பரியவுரை. 2. பதவுரை, verbal explanation, or interpretation, word by word, or clause by clause, also called கண்ணழிவுரை. 3. பொழிப்புரை, the substance of the text omitting rhetorical ornament, and adjuncts, or a free rendering of the text without interruption, also called பொழிப்புத் திரட்டுரை and பிண்டவுரை. --Note. The latter is the same as பதவுரை would be without the words of the text interspersed. 4. விரித்துரை, explanation at large, comment or exposition with proofs, illustrations, &c., also called அலகவுரை and விரியுரை; any of the preceding three, or any other kind of explanation may be included in this last. According to நன்னூல், உரை is divided into tow general classes, viz.: காண்டிகையுரை and விருத்தியுரை. 1. காண்டிகையுரை, brief exposition, or explanation of the text embracing five sub-divisions. (a) கருத்துரை, the scope of the text. (b) பதப்பொருள், verbal rendering being either as பதவுரை or as the scope and definition of பொழிப்புரை, given above, (c) உதாரணம், example for illustration. (d) வினா, anticipating objections, (lit.) proposing questions. (e) விடை, answering such objections or questions as may possibly occur. 2. விருத்தியுரை, copious or complete explanation embracing fourteen sub-divisions. 1. பாடம், giving the text or verse to be explained with different readings and choice exposition. 2. கருத்துரை, the general scope, or import of the text, as in காண்டிகை. 3. சொல்வகை, giving the parts of speech, or showing the grammatical connection when necessary to clear away obscurities. 4. சொ ற்பொருள், giving equivalent, literal words, or clauses as பதப்பொருள், in காண்டிகை, verbal renderings, &c. 5. தொகுத்துரை, a free rendering of the text as பொழிப்புரை, above. 6. உதாரணம், illustration by examples, as above. 7. வினா, anticipating objections, or raising questions as before. 8. விடை, answering such objections or giving reasons in support of the statements in the text. 9. விசேடம், special explanation, particular remarks. 1. விரிவு, supplying ellipses as of cases or otherwise. 11. அதிகாரம், determining the meaning of doubtful terms by reference to the subjects under discussion, as belonging to such a head, &c., or according to another exposition pointing out the beginning and ending of the discussion of the different subjects respectively, the opinions of different commentators. 12. துணிவு, deciding the meaning of terms concerning which there may be diversity of opinion. 13. பயன், inference, applications or recapitulation to show what is to be learnt by the text. 14. ஆசிரியவசனம், quotations, or textuary proofs from other authors. (p.) உரைகட்ட, inf. To comment on a work. உரைகாரன், s. A commentator, expositor, உரையாசிரியன். உரைக்கோள், s. The construction given by the commentator to the text, உரைகாரன்கருத்து. உரைசெய்ய, inf. To speak, declare, பேச. To make a commentary, வியாக்கியானம்பண்ண. உரைநூல், s. A work on which a commentary has been written, உரைபெற் றநூல். உரைபாடம்--உரையேடு, s. A work with its commentary. உரையாசிரியன், s. [used honorifically] A commentator, உரைகாரன். உரையாட, inf. To say, speak, tell, சொல்ல. 2. To converse, dispute, பேச. (p.) என்றுரையாடி நெடுங்கடல்வண்ணனெழுந்தருள. Having said thus, Vishnu who wears the color of the broad sea condescended to start--(பார.) உரையாயிருக்க, inf. To be in prose. உரையிலக்கணம், s. Rules for making commentaries. There are five according to சதுரகராதி, viz.: 1. பதம். 2. பதப்பொருள். 3. வாக்கியம். 4. வினா. 5. விடை. உரையிற்கோடல், v. noun. Additions to a text by a commentator--one of the உத்தி. உரையெழுத, inf. To write a commentary. உரைவன்மை, s. Eloquence, oratorical power, சாதுரியப்பேச்சு. 2. Forcible language that cannot be controverted, சொற்றிட்பம். உரைவாசகம், s. Prose composition, discourse, language. பாட்டுமுரையும், s. A poem with commentary. திருவள்ளுவருரை, s. The explanation of Tiruvalluvar's book. 58)

ulkm (p. 65) --உலகு, (Sans. லோக.) World, universe, உலோகம். 2. The earth, பூமி. 3. Country, territory, நாடு. 4. Region, திசை. 5. (fig.) The inhabitants of the world, உலகத்தார். 6. The sky, etherial regions, ஆகாயம். 7. The learned, the good, சான்றோர், 8. (fig.) Created beings or existences, every thing except the Supreme, சிருட்டிப்பொருள்கள். (தத். 37.) 9. A word auspicious to begin a poem, மங்கலச்சொற்களினொன்று. உலகஞ்சொல்லுகிறது. The country says so, such is the public opinion. உலகந்தோன்றிநின்றழிய. To appear, abide and perish periodically--as the universe-உலகசஞ்சாரம், s. Inhabiting the world, பூமியிற்சஞ்சரிக்கை. உலகசயன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். (p.) உலகநடை--உலகவழக்கம்--உலக வழக்கு, s. One who holds opinions and acts contrary to the sentiments of the wise. உலகமலையாமை, s. One of the ten அழகு or beauties of language, classical usage, &c. See அழகு. உலகமலைவு, s. [in rhetoric.] Incongruity, impossibility, absurdity--as அலை கடல்களேழுந்தூர்த்தந்தாத்தினூடே--மலையனையமால் யானையோட்டிக்--கலவாரை--நீறுசெய்துவையநெ டுங்குடைக்கீழ்வாழ்வித்தான்--மாறாச்சீர்வையையார் கோன், the Pandian king of Madura of endless fame filled the seven seas with sand, drove his elephant through the sky, reduced his enemies to ashes, and brought the whole world under his sway. (அலங்.) உலகமாதா, s. The mother of the world--applied to Sarasvati, சரச்சுவதி. 2. Lukshmi, இலக்குமி. 3. Parvati, பார்ப் பதி. (p.) உலகமீன்றாள், s. Parvati the wife of Siva, the mother of the world, பார்ப்பதி. (p.) உலகமுண்டோன், s. Vishnu the world-eater, விட்டுணு. (p.) உலகரட்சகன், s. The saviour or protector of the world. உலகரட்சணியம்--உலகரட்சை, s. Protection, or salvation of the world. உலகர், s. Worldlings, those engrossed by worldly pursuits. (தீ. 335.) (p.) உலகவழக்கம், s. The customs of the world. உலகவாசை--உலகவாஞ்சை, s. Ardent love of worldly, or sensual enjoyments, உலகவிருப்பம். உலகவாழ்வு, s. Temporal prosperity. உலகளந்தோன், s. Vishnu the measurer of the world, விட்டுணு. (p.) உலகாசாரம், s. Relative duties, the customs, rites or duties to be performed according to the country, caste, rank, relation, &c., of persons respectively. உலகாயிதம், s. A system of materialism, or atheistical epicurianism, அறுசமயங்களிலொன்று. See சமயம். (p.) உலகாள--உலகோம்ப, inf. To govern, protect his country--as one of the duties of a king. உலகாள்வோன், s. A monarch, உலோகாதிபன். உலகியல், s. The customs of the world, உலகநடை. உலகோம்பல், v. noun. Preserving the world--one of the six occupations of kings. See தொழில். உலகோற்பத்தி, s. The origin, or development of worlds. மேலுலகு, s. The upper worlds, which are seven in number, viz.: பூலோ கம், புவர்லோகம், சுவர்லோகம், மகாலோகம், சன லோகம், தபோலோகம், சத்தியலோகம். கீழுலகு, s. The lower worlds or regions; which are also seven, அதலம், விதலம், சுதலம், தராதலம், இரசாதலம், மகாதலம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகம், s. The three worlds, viz.: சொர்க்கம், மத்தியம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகாளி, s. God, (lit.) the sovereign of the three worlds, கடவுள். (p.) மூவுலகுணர்ந்தோன், s. He who comprehends the three worlds, God, க டவுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். (p.) மூவுலகேந்தி, s. ūṭu (p. 69) s. [as உள்.] The inside, that which is intermediate, between, நடு. (சத. 18.) 2. [vul.] Wool, thread woven across the warp, தார்நூல்.--Note. Commonly ஊடு as an affix governs the dative--as அவர்களுக்கூடேவந்தான், he came between them. இந்தஅலுவல்களுக்கூடேயிதையுமெப்படிச்செய்வே ன். To cut through, separate and pass through, cleave, to sunder--as an arrow; to force one's way through people, jungle, beasts, &c., உள்ளறுக்க. 2. To determine between two parties, to decide differences, settle amicably, வழக்குத்தீர்க்க. ஊடாட, inf. To go about--as a domestic in a house, அகத்திலுலாவித்திரிய. 2. To frequent, பலகாற்பயில. 3. To deal, or be familiar with, பழக. 4. To be conversant with a subject--as of science, art, &c., கல்விபயில. பாரைக்கூடாடாதபாறைபசுமரத்தின்வேருக்கூடாடி விடும். Friendship so close as not to admit of even a hair-like interruption may be destroyed by pecuniary dealings. ஊடாடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To search, examine, &c., to look into, ஆராய்ந்துபார்க்க. கல்வியிலூடாடிப்பார். Look into learning, learn. ஊடாட்டம், v. noun. Familiarity, intercourse, intimacy, பழகுகை. ஊடாட்டம்பண்ண, inf. To be familiar, have intercourse, with, பயிற்சி பண்ண. ஊடுசெல்ல, inf. To pass through a crowd, a jungle, &c. ஊடுதாக்க, inf. To oppose with firmness, பின்னிடாமலெதிர்நிற்க. 2. To compare two things with each other with regard to their strength. ஒன்றோடொன்றூடுதாக்க, inf. To oppose each other. ஊடுபற்ற, inf. To burn within a lamp--as wick when the oil is out, உள்ளேபற்றியெரிய. ஊடுபோக்க, inf. To run through, cause to pass through, உருவச்செய்ய. 2. To decide between parties, settle amicably, வழக்குத்தீர்க்க. ஊடுருவ, inf. To penetrate--as rays, air, a weapon; to transpierce, உள் ளேயுருவ. 2. v. n. To insinuate itself into, உட்செல்ல. ஊடுருவத்தைக்க, inf. To transpierce, to stitch through. ஊடூடே, adv. Here and there, irregularly interspersed, frequently, often, every now and then. 44)
