akpporuḷ (p. 2) s. [ex. அகம், mind, et பொருள்.] Rules for amatory poems, அ கப்பொருள்விதி. 2. Rules for reasoning, தர்க் கவிதி. 3. mental enjoyments in love, இன் பம். 4. A book treating of mental delectation, ஓரிலக்கணம். அகப்பொருள் is developed in these three constituents, viz., 1. முதற்பொருள், primary arrangements of nature with regard to (a) நிலம், soil, in five varieties, and (b) பொழுது, time in two grand divisions. 2. கருப்பொருள், natural peculiarities incidental to each of the divisions of the soil under 14 heads viz., (a) ஆரணங்கு, peculiar gods belonging to a place, tutelary deities or penates, (b) உயர்ந் தோர், chiefs or lords of the district, (c) இழிந்தோர், subjects or inhabitants under them, (d) புள், birds, (e) விலங்கு, beasts, (f) ஊர், city or town, (g) நீர், water, (h) பூ, flowers, (i) மரம். trees, (j) உணா, food, (k) பறை, drum, (l) யாழ், musical instruments, (m) பண், tune, and (n) தொழில், occupation, trade or mode of earning a livelihood. 3. உரிப்பொருள், essential characteristics of lovers. The subject matter of this treatise, to which the two former are auxiliary or conducive, is developed in five dispositions or actions, either mental or coporal, viz., (a) புணர்தல், union or the state in which husbands and wives are together in their family, (b) பிரிதல், separation when for lawful purposes, (c) இருத்தல், the state in which they continue solitary, especially the bride, (d) ஊடல், love quarrels, (e) இ ரங்கல், weeping and lamentation in any period of their life for any cause. These five characteristics are respectively ascribed to the above five species of soil, as appropriately adapted to their nature, as புணர்தல் to குறிஞ்சி, பிரிதல் to பாலை, இருத்தல் to முல்லை, ஊடல் to மருதம், and இரங்கல் to நெய்தல். இந் த ஐந்து ஒழுக்கத்தையுங்குறித்துப் பாடும்பொழுது அத தற்குக்குறித்த திணையிலுள்ள கருப்பொருள்களையெடுத் துப் பாடுதன்முறையாம். A measure, twelve inches the length of a person's foot, also of a pace, step, ஓர்வகையளவு. 8. The print of a foot-step, foot-print, vestige, காற்சுவடு. 9. The sole of a sandal, shoe, &c., மிதியடியினடி. 1. Vicinity, neighborhood, nearness, proximity, சமீபம். 11. Underside, lower part, கீழ். (பஞ். 24.)-Note. There are five kinds of அடி as a metrical line. 1. குறளடி. 2. சிந்தடி. 3. அளவடி, or நேரடி. 4. நெடிலடி. 5. கழிநெடிலடி which see. அடிகொள்ள, inf. To begin, originate, be founded, தொடங்க. அடிகோல, inf. To lay a foundation for any building, அஸ்திவாரம்போட. 2. To take measures, undertake, make preparations, முயற்சிசெய்ய. அடிக்கடி, adv. Frequently, often repeatedly, reiteratedly, பலமுறை. அடிக்குடி, s. Suburbs; ex குடி, village. அடிக்குடில், s. The suburb of a town, 2. A village of the Vedda people. அடிக்குள்ளே. Within a moment, in the same moment, before the next step is taken. அடிச்சால், s. The first furrow in ploughing. அடிச்சீப்பு, s. The first formed and best plantains of the bunch. அடிச்சூடு, s. Heat felt in the sole of the foot when walking. அடிச்சேரி, s. Suburbs. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. To step, set a step, காலடிவைக்க. 2. To begin to walk as a child, நடக்கத்தொடங்க. 3. To intrude one's self into an affair, தலையிட. 4. To begin a work, ஆரம்பிக்க. மலையடிப்பட்டி, s. A village at the foot of a hill. சிற்றடி, s. A small or delicate foot.

amṭṭu (p. 19) கிறேன், அமட்டினேன், வேன், அமட்ட, v. a. To reprimand, upbraid, அதட்ட. 2. To inveigle, entrap, ensnare, சிக்குப்படுத்த. 3. To hector, bully, overpower by sophistry, உறுக்க. 4. To move tiles, &c., புரட்ட. 5. To overcome one, as sleep, மேற்கொள்ள. 6. v. n. To wabble, turn aside, be unsteady as a bench with uneven legs, புரள. என்னைத்தூக்கமமட்டுகிறது. iṭu (p. 45) கிறேன், இட்டேன், வேன், இட, v. a. To set, put on as ornaments, தரிக்க. 2. To put in, deposit, keep, வைக்க. 3. To give, bestow, grant, devote, appropriate, ஈய. 4. To throw, case, poke out, poke or thrust into, எறிய. 5. To designate, appropriate, assign, allot, destine, dictate, விதிக்க. 6. To pour, shower, சொரிய.--As an expletive, it is joined to the gerunds of other verbs in which, it sometimes gives additional force or emphasis to the action expressed, or serves as a kind of finish, வினையெச்சத்தோடுசேர்ந்தோர்பகுதிநீர்மைத்தா ய்வருவது.--The gerund இட்டு is sometimes used to express cause, instrumentality, &c.--as, அவனையிட்டிந்தப்பழிவந்தது, this disgrace happened through him. மரத்தினிற்பறவைக்கிடுகலேபோலப்பாதகமனைத்துந் தொலைத்திடும். It will drive away every evil, as a stone thrown at birds in a tree puts them to flight. இடுகடை, s. A door or gate where much liberality is exercised, கொடுப்போனில்வாயில். (p.) இடுகறல், s. Fuel, விறகு. (நிக ண்டு.) (p.) இடுகாடு, s. A burying place, பிரே தம்புதைக்குமிடம். 2. A place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. இடுகுறி--இடுகுறிப்பெயர், s. Arbitrary names of things, primitive terms. இடுகுறிச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A specific term or primitive nouns not common to all--as தெ ங்கு, a cocoanut tree. இடுகுறிப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] A generic term, or primitive common noun--as மரம், tree or trees. இடுதங்கம், s. Refined gold, gold of the best quality, புடமிடுதங்கம். 2. Gold inlaid, set, mounted, &c., கல்நகையிலுள் ளிடுதங்கம். இடுதண்டம், s. A penalty, விதிக் கப்பட்ட ஆக்கினை. 2. A penalty, fine, mulct, அநியாயதண்டம். இடுதிரை, s. A curtain, திரைச் சீலை. இடுமருந்து, s. intiraṉ (p. 46) s. Indra, king of the Devas or genii who inhabit Swerga, lord of the clouds, rain, seasons, crops, and worshipped at the seasons of sowing and reaping, வாசவன். State, condition, circumstances, தன்மை. 5. [prov.] Means, instruments, tools, பணிமுட்டு.-Note. This word is opposed to செயற்கை, artificial productions. இயற்கைக்குணம், s. The natural disposition, natural temper. இயற்கைஞானம்--இயற்கையறிவு, s. Natural, inherent or intuitive wisdom--as a property of the Deity. இயற்கைதப்பினவன், s. A dishonest person. இயற்கைப்புணர்ச்சி, s. [in love poetry.] Marriage indicated by destiny, arising from previous actions and by natural choice and inclination, தலைவனுந் தலைவியுந்தம்முளொத்துப்புணர்கை. இயற்கைப்பொருள், s. A thing in nature--that which is not artificial --as the elements. இயற்கையறிவு, s. The knowledge which cannot be increased--as that of God. 2. Instinctive knowledge in distinction from that which is acquired; opp. to செயற்கையறிவு; which see. இயற்கையன்பு, s. Love formed naturally--according to Hindu physiology, the result of love in a former birth--opposed to செயற்கையன்பு, or love brought about by external means. இயற்கையானகுடி, s. iṟukku (p. 57) கிறேன், இறுக்கினேன், வே ன், இறுக்க, v. a. To tighten, strain close or hard, to make compact, அழுந்தக்கட்ட. 2. To thicken a liquid, inspissate, உறையச்செ ய்ய. 3. (சது.) To put on clothes, to dress, உடுக்க. 4. [prov.] To urge, coerce, force, ஒடுக்க. 5. To reprimand, reprove, bear hard upon, chide, உறுக்க. இறுக்குவார், s. A saddle girth, the thong of a sandal, any thing used for tying or binding, அழுந்தக்கட்டும்வார். இறுக்கு, v. noun. ilayam (p. 53) s. Death, destruction, சா வு. 2. Absorption, transformation, involution, reduction of one element into another --as of earth into water; water into fire; fire into air; and air into ether, அடங்குகை. (See ஒடுக்கம்.) 3. The knowledge or science of beating drums, cymbals and other instrumental accompaniments, சங்கீதசுரக்கியானம். இலயஸ்தானம், s. The primitive of the evolved forms of nature, and of the transformations or assumed appearances of deity, into which they all become at last resolved, ஒடுங்குமிடம். இலயமாக, inf. To perish, to be destroyed. உற்பத்திஸ்திதிலயம், s. Creation, preservation and destruction. சீவலயம், s. Destruction of animated nature. சீவலயமானகாரியம், s. A destructive event. 38)

il (p. 55) . A form of the fifth case, (see இன்), ஐந்தனுருபு, which denotes. 1. Removal, withdrawal, நீங்கல். (a) Literally --as தமரிற்றீர்ந்தான், he has left his relations, i. e. for ascetic life. (b) (fig.) In which it expresses speciality, disparity, &c., and includes the comparative degree --as அரசரிற்பெரியரந்தணர், the Brahman caste is superior to the royal. 2. Similitude, ஒப்பு--as திறல்வேனுதியிற்பூத்தகேணி. A tank whose flowers resemble the points of mighty lances. 3. The bearing of a place, எல்லை--as கருவூரில்வடக்கு, north of Caroor.--Note. This form of the fifth case is peculiar to the poetic dialect. 4. The primitive cause, ஏது--as பொன்னிற் செய்தமுடி, a crown made of gold. 24)

uṇṭu (p. 59) [ex உள்.] Third pers. neut. sing. of the symbolic verb உள், but now used with all persons, in both numbers and in both திணை, it is, it exists, there is, there was, there are, there may be, there might be, &c. In some connexions, it implies a degree of uncertainly, குறிப்புவினை முற்று. 2. Existing, existence, a thing that exists, உள்ளது. This and the participle உள்ள, (with its appellative) are the only parts of the verb, generally brought into colloquial use. எனக்குத்தெய்வமுண்டு. God is my help, (எனக்கு is often omitted)--spoken of one when deserted, ill-treated, &c. அதற்குநானுண்டுஅவனுண்டு. This concerns him and me exclusively (you need not meddle with it). 2. He and I are responsible for that. உண்டில்லையெனல், Either affirming or denying. உண்டுபட, inf. [prop. உண்டாக.] To come into existence, to become formed or produced by natural process evident to the senses, to happen, occur, தோன்ற. 2. To have origin, உண்டாக. 3. To grow, thrive, flourish, முளைக்க. உண்டுபட்டனவெல்லாமழியும். All that is created will perish, or be reduced to its primeval elements. இதிலுப்புண்டுபட்டது. Salt is formed here. அங்கேயொருகலகமுண்டுபட்டிருக்கிறது. An insurrection is sprung up there. உண்டுபடுத்த, inf. [prov. prop. உண் டுபண்ண.] To make, create, &c.--as உண் டாக்க. 2. To fabricate, make a false story, ஏற்படுத்த. வேதம்உண்டுபடுத்தியசீர்த்திவியாதமுனி. Vedaviasar renowned as the compiler of the Vedas. (திருச்.) உண்டுபண்ண, inf. To make, bring into existence. உண்டுபண்ணிவைக்க, inf. To make, to establish, render permanent. 2. To rear plants, &c. 3. To establish one in life. உண்டென, inf. To say it is. 2. [vul. adverbially.] Much, exceedingly, more, நிரம்ப. உண்டெனத்தரவேண்டும். Give me more, give me liberally. 125)
