uṇṭu (p. 59) [ex உள்.] Third pers. neut. sing. of the symbolic verb உள், but now used with all persons, in both numbers and in both திணை, it is, it exists, there is, there was, there are, there may be, there might be, &c. In some connexions, it implies a degree of uncertainly, குறிப்புவினை முற்று. 2. Existing, existence, a thing that exists, உள்ளது. This and the participle உள்ள, (with its appellative) are the only parts of the verb, generally brought into colloquial use. எனக்குத்தெய்வமுண்டு. God is my help, (எனக்கு is often omitted)--spoken of one when deserted, ill-treated, &c. அதற்குநானுண்டுஅவனுண்டு. This concerns him and me exclusively (you need not meddle with it). 2. He and I are responsible for that. உண்டில்லையெனல், Either affirming or denying. உண்டுபட, inf. [prop. உண்டாக.] To come into existence, to become formed or produced by natural process evident to the senses, to happen, occur, தோன்ற. 2. To have origin, உண்டாக. 3. To grow, thrive, flourish, முளைக்க. உண்டுபட்டனவெல்லாமழியும். All that is created will perish, or be reduced to its primeval elements. இதிலுப்புண்டுபட்டது. Salt is formed here. அங்கேயொருகலகமுண்டுபட்டிருக்கிறது. An insurrection is sprung up there. உண்டுபடுத்த, inf. [prov. prop. உண் டுபண்ண.] To make, create, &c.--as உண் டாக்க. 2. oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. According to the Hindu Philosophy, காரணம் is three fold, viz.: முத ற்காரணம், துணைக்காரணம், நிமித்தகாரணம், முத ற்காரணம், material, proximate cause--as clay from which pottery is made, or the primitive Maya out of which the universe was produced. துணைக்காரணம், secondary, instrumental, or co-efficient cause--as the wheel used by a potter, or the Sakti (energy) of the god Siva. நிமித்தகாரணம், the efficient cause or the agent--as the potter, in the manufacture of wares, or the god Siva in the production of worlds. சர்வத்துக்குமாதிகாரணமானவர். The first cause or creator of all things. காரணகர்த்தா--காரணகடவுள் s. The Supreme Being--the Chief Agent in all things, முதற்கடவுள். 2. Any supposed miracle-working deity, அற்புத கடவுள். காரணகாட்சி, s. Demonstration 'a priori', or from an axiom. Rott. 2. A pleasing and marvellous sight. காரணகாரியம், s. Cause and effect, காரமுங்காரியமும். காரணகுரு, s. A guru whose sole object is the spiritual benefit of his disciples, மெய்க்குரு--opposed to கரியகுரு. காரணக்குறி, s. [in gram.] Derived names or appellatives, as one of the classes of nouns--opposed to இடுகுறி,கார ணப்பெயர். 2. Presage, omen, prognostic, a sign showing beforehand what is to happen, முன்னறிகுறி. காரணங்காட்ட, inf. To affirm a cause, to ascribe or show reasons, ஏதுகாட்ட. காரணகேவலம், s. Absolute unconsciousness of the soul during its involution in காரணமாயை. It is one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசகலம், s. Conscious state of the soul during its manifestation in the world, and consequent subjection to births and deaths; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணசரீரம், s. The most subtile embryo of the body, as originally and eternally existing with the soul. (See சரீரத்திரயம்.) In the Vedantic philosophy, the original principle of spiritual ignorance, in which the soul is enveloped during the period of its non-absorption in Brahm. காரணசுத்தம், s. Complete liberation from பாசம், and the attainment of perfect purity and happiness; one of the three காரணாவஸ்தை. காரணச்சிறப்புப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names limited in their application--as முடி, a crown so called because it is put on முடி, the head, ஒன் றற்குரியகாரணப்்பெயர். காரணச்சொல், s. A story, a narrative, கதை. (p.) 2. A derived word. காரணப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derivative names. காரணப்பொதுப்பெயர், s. [in grammar.] Derived names extending to various classes--as அணி, jewel; so called because it embraces various kinds of jewels, which are worn, பலவற்றிற்குரியகார ணப்பெயர். காரணமாயிருக்க, inf. To be the author of the thing. காரணமாயை, s. Maya as the primitive, original substance from which all the manifestations of matter and spirit are evolved, and into which they are again resolved at the destruction of the universe, அகிலத்துக்கும் வித்தானமாயை. see மாயை. காரணமுகாந்திரம், s. Motive. காரணவணு, s. According to some atheistical schools, primitive or original atoms, by the fortuitous combination of which, the worlds were originated. காரணவாகுபெயர், s. Names in which the cause is, by the way of metonymy, used for the effect--as in திருவாசகம். காரணவிசேஷம், s. Chief or principal things. (p.) காரணவிடுகுறி, s. A name which, though given originally as descriptive of a class of objects, is applied to individuals of the class, though destitute of the qualities which it describes--as மறவன், கறங்கு. காரணவிலக்கணை, s. camayam (p. 162) s. A convenient, suitable or proper time; leisure, convenience, opportunity, தருணம். 2. Time, season, occasion, juncture of time; emergency, extremity, காலம். 3. Any religious persuasion, faith or system, மார்க்கம். (c.) W. p. 894. SAMAYA. --Note.. There are twelve principal religious systems, of which six are approved and six rejected by the Saiva sect. 1. உட் சமையம், or the six systems considered orthodox by the Saivas are. 1. வைரவம், making Bhairava supreme. 2. வாமம், regarding the female principle in nature, as the primeval form of deity, and teaching the worship of the generative female organ. 3. காளாமுகம், similar to the வாமம். 4. மாவிரதம், teaching that the deity is a pure spirit. 5. பாசுபதம், similar to மாவிரதம். 6. சைவம், Saivism, which teaches that the deity is both spirit and matter; assuming forms for accomplishing his purposes. II. புறச்சமயம், or the six heterodox systems; viz.:-- 1. உலகாயதம். A species of Atheism regarding sensual gratifications as the chief good, as taught by the atheistical school of Charvaka. 2. புத் தம். Bhuddism, which rejects the notion of a Supreme being, maintains that all material existences proceed from a fortuitous combination of the four primitive elements, (earth, water, fire, and air,) and that mental phenomena are the mere results of organization. It regards Bhudd as a deified teacher and object of worship. 3. சமணம். The Jaina system which is a modification of Bhuddism, and regards Argha as the deified preceptor and object of worship. 4. மீமாஞ்சை. A system that regards Brahm as the soul of the universe. 5. பாஞ்சாரத்திரம். A system taught by Vishnu, during five successive nights. 6. பாட்டாசாரியம். The system of Battacharya whose followers regard the Vedas as god, and consider that virtuous actions of themselves result in felicity. III. Other systems derived from these twelve or in some respects similar to them are very numerous, some of them are கபாலம், சவுத்திராந்திகம், யோகசாரணம், ஆத்துமிகம், வைபாடிகம், நிகண்டவா தம், நையாயிகம், வைசேஷிகம், பதஞ்சலியம், சாங்கியம், சித்தாந்தம், வேதாந்தம், &c. The six orthodox systems among the Vaishnuvas are 1. யாதவம், that of Yádava Misra. 2. மாயாவாதம், that by Sankarachárya. 3. இரணியகர்ப்பம், that by Hiranyagarbha. 4. இராமானுசீயம், that by Rámánuja. 5. பாஸ்கரம், that by Bhaskara. 6. தத்துவவாதம், that by Mádhavácharya. சமயகருமம், s.
