tāṉam (p. 236) s. (Sa. Da'na.) Gift in charity, donation, grant, contribution--commonly with a religious motive, as a work of merit; meritorious alms being bestowed on special occasions, as at the birth of a child, at a funeral, at the last moment of life, &c., கொடை. 2. Liberality, munificence, bounty, ஈகை. 3. Benefit, succor, உதவி. 4. The rut of the elephant, யானைமதம். 5. (Sa. Ta'na.) A tune, இராகம். --Note. தானம், for the souls of deceased ancestors is made to some of the பிதிர் class of gods, regarded as representatives of those progenitors; பிதிர் gifts are called தியாகம். தானம், 3. Three kinds of gifts. 1. தலைப்படுதானம், this is to give what one has honestly acquired to such as are free from the three great vices, lust, anger and scepticism, and who addict themselves with cheerful submission to a virtuous life; and when giving, praying that the gift may be received, அறத்தா லீட்டியபொருளைமுக்குற்றமற்ற நற்றவத்தோரைக்கொ ள்கெனப்பணிந்து, குறையிரந்து, தம்முள்ளமுவந்தீ தல். 2. இடைப்படுதானம், bestowing through pity, &c. (See இடை.) 3. கடைப்படுதானம், the last and lowest kind of charity, is, bestowing alms from love of popularity or praise, the fear of losing favor, or mere kindness of disposition, சுயநலத்தைப் பற்றியீவது. தானம், 1. Ten kinds of gifts. See தசதானம். பசுவையடித்துப்புலிக்குத்தானங்கொடுக்கிறதா.... Would one kill a cow and make a present of it to a tiger? நீற்றுப்பூசணிக்காய்த்தானம், s. The gift of an ash-colored pumpkin, instead of the life of a sick person required by the configuration of the planets; also called, மிருத்துதானம், கூஷ்மாண்டதானம், and கூஷ்மாண்டம். This kind of pumpkin is never cut, it being supposed to possess life; when used for food, it is always broken. தானங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give alms. 2. To make donation, contributions, presents, &c. 3. To make donations to a guru or brahman in the last extremity. See தாசதானம். தானங்கொடுத்தபசு, s. A cow given to a brahman or to a temple, just before death. தானசீலன், s. A liberal, charitable man. தானதருமம்--தானதன்மம், s. Alms and presents. தானபத்திரம்--தானபத்திரிகை, s. A deed of gift. தானாதிகருமங்கள், s. pāl (p. 313) s. Milk, பசுவின் பால்முதலியன. 2. Milky juice in plants, trees and fruits--as the eocoa-nut, மரமுதலியவற்றின்பால். 3. Lymph, matter, fluid in pustules, &c., அம்மைப்பால். 4. (சது.) Whiteness, வெண்மை. [a contraction of Sa. Palana, milk of a cow recently calved.]--Note. In combination the final ல் is changed by rule to ற், sometimes to ன், பாலுக்குங்காவல்பூனைக்குந்தோழன். A guard to the milk, but a friend to the cat. பாலும்வெள்ளைமோரும்வெள்ளை. Milk is white, whey is white--spoken of persons or things apparently similar, but really very different. பால்வார்த்துமுழுகுவான். He will bathe, putting milk on his head (in token of his joy at your death, &c.). பாலடை, s. A shell for a milk-ladle, பாலடைச்சங்கு. [loc.] 2. A shrub, பால டைச்செடி, Hallia sororia. பாலடைய, inf. As பால்கொள்ள. பாலவரை, s. A whitish species of pulse. See அவரை. பாலாடை--பாலேடு, s. Cream of milk. பாலாறு, s. The river Palar. பாலிறங்குதல்--பால்வடிதல், v. noun. Pustule becoming dry. 2. The flowing down of milk. பாலுண்ணி, s. A kind of wart. See உண்ணி. பாலுமறுகுந்தப்பித்தோய, inf. [prov.] To bathe after putting milk and sacrificial grass on the head--as a bride and bridegroom before marriage, before marriage, to obtain progeny. பாலும்பழமும்கொடுக்க, inf. To give milk and plantains as done by a bride and bridegroom to each other, after the marriage ceremony. (c.) பாலுறட்டி, s. [prov.] A kind of pastry, made with cocoa-nut milk. பாலூட்டி, inf. To suckle a child. பாலொலிக்க, inf. [prov.] To keep back milk as a cow for its calf. பால்கட்ட--பால்வைக்க, inf. To innoculate, to vaccinate. பால்குடிக்க, inf. To suck milk as a babe. 2. To take milk. பால்குடிக்கிறகுழந்தை. A child at the breast. பால்குடிமறந்தபிள்ளை, A wanted child. பாலனும்பால்குடியான் Even the suckling ceases to suck--a phrase expressive of fear from oppression. பால்கொள்ள, inf. To form a milky consistence, as in young kernels, or pustules. பால்சுரக்குதல், v. noun. The forming of milk in the breast or udder. பால்சொரிதல், v. noun. Flowing out of milk. See சொரி, v. பால்தெளித்தல், v. noun. A funeral ceremony, See பாற்றெளி. பால்தோய்தல். The curdling of milk, by itself. பால்நண்டு, s. The white crab. See நண்டு. பால்நரம்பு--பானரம்பு, s. Blue veins as they appear in a young mother who is suckling a child. பால்பாய்தல், v. noun. [prov.] Exuding of milky juice from a tapped or wounded tree. பால்பிடிக்க, inf. As பால்கொள்ள. பால்பிடிபதம், s. The stage of grain when they newly formed kernels are of a milky consistency. பால்பிழிய, inf. To press out cocoa-nut milk. பால்பெயர்தல், inf. The forming of milk in the breast or udder. பால்பொழிய, inf. To give milk freely, as cows, &c. 2. (fig.) To be prosperous. பால்மடி, s. An udder teeming with milk. பால்மணம், s. Smell of milk. 2. Smell of rice gruel at a proper stage for taking it from the fire. 3. Milky smell of a sucking child's breath. பால்மரம், s. Any tree with a milky sap. பால்மறக்க, inf. To wean. பால்மறுத்துப்போகுதல், v. noun. [improp. பால்மறத்துப்போகுதல்.] Cow ceasing to give milk. பால்மீன், s. The milk-fish, Clupea cyperinoides. பால்முடங்கி, appel. n. A kind of medicinal plant. பால்முட்டான், s. A kind of fish. பால்மோடிக்கா, s. A plant, Panicled bendweed. Convolvulus arvensis, L பால்வடி, s. [prov.] A kind of basket used as a cullender for straining milk. பால்வீதிமண்டலம், s. [in astron.] The galaxy or milky way. பால்வெடிபதம், s. A stage in the growth of corn, when, if pressed, milk gushes out. பால்வெள்ளி, s. Pure silver. பால்வைக்க, inf. As பால்கட்ட. பாற்கடல், s. The sea of milk. See கடல். பாற்கடற்பிறந்தாள், appel. n. Lukshmi, as born in பாற்கடல், இலக்குமி. பாற்கடற்றுயில்வோன், appel. n. Vishnu as sleeping in the sea of milk, விஷ்ணு. பாற்கட்டுப்பயிர், s. Grain in the milk. See பயிர். பாற்கலயம், s. A small pot for milking. பாற்கவடி, s. Chowries, very white small shells used in Bengal for money, வெள்ளைப்பலகறை. பாற்காய், s. Unripe fruits which abound in milky juice, பால்பற்றியகாய். பாற்காரன், s. A milk-man. பாற்காரி, s. A woman who sells milk. 2. A wet nurse. பாற்காவடி, s. Milk, carried with ceremony under a canopy to be presented to an idol. This is commonly done at the Palney festivals. See காவடி. பாற்குழந்தை, s. A sucking child. பாற்குழம்பு, s. Milk, thickened from being well boiled. பாற்கெண்டை, s. A fish, as பால்மீன். பாற்கொவ்வை, s. A species of கொவ் வை, with white flower. பாற்சுண்டு, s. Sediment of milk adhering to a vessel by boiling in it from day to day. 2. See சுண்டு. பாற்சுறா, s. A whitish kind of சுறா fish. பாற்சொறி, s. What is allowed to brahmans, or held free by them. பிரமதானம்--பிரமஸ்தானம், s. The inmost recess in a temple where the chief idol is placed, as கர்ப்பக்கிரகம். பிரமதேவன், s. The god Brahma, the Creator or Evolver of worlds. பிரமத்துவம், s. The divine nature, கட வுட்டன்மை. பிரமநிருவாணம், s. Union with the deity, கடவுளுடனொன்றுகை. பிரமபதம்--பிரமபதவி, s. One of the five யாகம், எச்சமைந்தினொன்று. பிரமயோனி, s. The birth, origin, or extraction of a brahman, பிராமணப்பிறப்பு. பிரமரட்சு, s. A savage man of a monstrous size, பருத்தமுருடன். பிரமரந்திரம், s. The tender part of the crown of the head where the bone is not formed in infancy, and through which it is said the soul of a yogi departs when he chooses to die, உச்சித்துவாரம். பிரமராட்சதன், s. A goblin or savage animated by the soul of a brahman, who in a former birth died with unexpiated sin. பிரமராட்சதி-பிரமராட்சதை, s. The writing of Brahma in the forehead of all persons before birth; fate, destiny. See தலைஎழுத்து. பிரமலிபிதப்பாது. The writing of Brahma will not fail. பிரமலோகம், s. The world and heaven of Brahma, being the seventh and highest of the seven upper worlds, also called சத்தியலோகம். (சது.) பிரமவமிசம், s. Lineage in succession from Brahma. 2. A form of worship in which the two hands are joined, and placed at the breast. பிரமாட்சரம், s. A letter which is the origin of all letters, and the prime root of all prayers and incantations, மூலவெ ழுத்து. பிரமாண்டம், s. The system of worlds, as created by Brahma, உலகம். 2. One of the eighteen Puranas, பதினெண்புரா ணத்தொன்று. 3. [fig.] That which is large, gigantic, huge, colossal, காத்திரம். (usage.) பிரமாண்டநாயகன், s. Lord of the universe, கடவுள். 2. An epithet used in praise, or compliment, சக்கரவர்த்தி. பிரமாத்திரம்--பிரமாஸ்திரம், s. A famous arrow of supernatural qualities, given by Brahma to some, who had practised extraordinary austerities. பிரமாந்தரம், s. Certain parts of the body regarded as stations of the soul, உயிர்நிலை. பிரமாயு, s. The age of Brahma, as பிர மகற்பம்; [ex ஆயு.] பிரமாயுதம், s. A number, one million, பத்திலட்சம். (சது.) பிரமாரண்ணியம், s. The name of a town called வேதாரண்ணியம். பிரமாலயம், s. The house of a brahman. பிரமானந்தம், s. Heavenly bliss, or felicity, as பரமானந்தம். பிரமோத்தரகாண்டம், s. The last section of chapter of the Brahma Purana, added by the Saivas concerning Gokarnam, பிரமபுராணத்துக்கடைக்காண்டம். பிரமோற்சவம், s. An annual grand festival at a pagoda. 3) *

Arguing, or reasoning, in a circle, ஓர்வகைநியாயம்; [ex அங் குரம், sprout.] பீசாட்சரம், s. The mystical letter, or syllable, which forms the essential part of the mantra of any deity, மூலவெழுத்து. 18)

virāṭṭu (p. 397) s. The first progeny of Brahma, who, having divided himself into male and female, produced Viraj from the female; Viraj by himself produced the first Menu, or Swayamb'huva, who was the progenitor of the Prajapatis, and the secondary framer of the visible world. According to some, Viraj is the same as Para-Brahma. the primary cause. See W. p. 781. VIRAJ. Others consider him to be the same as Parama-purusha, or Vishnu; who, after being formed, offered up himself in sacrifice. See Kennedy's An. 2.
