Inference, illation-one of the modes in logic of arriving at a conclusion, as from smoke to infer the presence of fire, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிகை. Wils. p. 34. ANUMANA. Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. Doubt, hesitancy uncertainty, conjecture, சமுசயம். அனுமானப்பிரமாணம், s. one of the eight laws of evidence, inference, காரியத்தாற்காரணத்தைக்காட்டுவது. அனுமானிக்க, inf. To confess, acknowledge. பிரதிசத்தம்--பிரதிதொனி--பிரதிநாதம், s. Echo, reverberation. பிரதிசாபம், s. A counter-curse. பிரதிசாயை--பிரதிபலம், s. Reflection as from water, a looking glass, &c., பிரதிபிம்பம். பிரதிசிகுவை, s. The uvula, உண்ணாக்கு. பிரதிசூரியன், s. A mock-sun, a sundog, சூரியப்பிரதிபிம்பம். பிரதிச்சீட்டு, s. A bond given in return. 2. A copy of a bond. பிரதிட்டை--பிரதிஷ்டை, s. Consecration, dedication, by which a god is supposed to be brought into an image, ஆவாகனம். See பிராணப்பிரதிஷ்டை. (c.) 2. There are different kinds of பிரதிஷ்டை, of a linga, as தே வப்பிரதிஷ்டை, cousecration by a deity; 2. ஆரிஷப்பிரதிஷ்டை, by a Rishi; 3. நரப் பிரதிஷ்டை, by an ordinary man. பிரதிஷ்டைபண்ண--பிரதிஷ்டையாக்க, inf. To consecrate, devote, dedicate. பிரதிதானம்--பிரதியுபகாரம், s. Remuneration, benefits in return for favors received; return of a deposit, கைம்மாறு. 2. Gifts given in expectation of a return, எதிர்க்கொடை. பிரதிதினம், s. Day by day நாளுக்குநாள். பிரதிதுரை, s. [Tel.] A deputy governor, உதவித்தலைவன். பிரதிநிசம்--பிரதிராத்திரம், s. Night by night, இரவோடிரா; [ex நிசம்=நிசி.] பிரதிபட்சன், s. An opponent, an antagonist, எதிரி. பிரதிபதம், s. A synonyme, பரியாயச் சொல். பிரதிபத்தி, s. Great confidence, in one whose good will has been experienced, மிகநம்பிக்கை. பிரதிபந்தகம்--பிரதிபந்தம், s. Obstacle, impediment, தடை. பிரதிபாதிக்க, inf. To determine, to define, to conclude. (Rare.) பிரதிபாலனம், s. Guard, protection, as பரிபாலனம், காப்பு. பிரதிபிம்பம், s. As பிரதிவிம்பம். பிரதிபோதம், s. Instruction, teaching, கற்பிப்பு. பிரதிமண்டலம், s. Circumference, சுற் றளவு. 2. An eccentric orbit. பிரதிமூர்த்தி, s. A likeness, image, resemblance, picture, தோற்றம். 2. Representation, பாவனை. 3. A transcript, பெ யர்த்தெழுதுகை. பிரதிமை, s. [adverbially.] Instead of in lieu of, in return for. பிரதியுத்தரம், s. An answer, மறுமொழி. பிதியெழுத, inf. To copy, to depict, to follow in imitation, பெயர்த்தெழுத. பிரதிலோமகன்--பிரதிலோமன், s. A son of a father and mother of different castes. See அந்தராளன். பிரதிவசனம்--பிரதிவாக்கியம், s. Answer, reply, மறுமொழி. பிரதிவாதம், s. Defence, replicand, respondent in a controversy. பிரதிவாதிப்பு, v. noun. A reply. (R.) பிரதிவிம்பம், s. Resemblance, or counterpart of real form--as a picture, image, shadow, reflection. பிரதிவிம்பர், s. [pl.] Reflectors, representatives, as the evolve, or secondary forms of the deity, உபதேவர். பிரதிவிம்பிக்க, inf. To be reflected, as images in a mirror, to be cast as a shadow, to be presented as the counterpart of real forms, to appear as the deity in any of the forms assumed as creator, preserver, &c., பிரதிபலிக்க. 29) *

pūcciyam (p. 329) s. Venerableness, that which is worthy of worship, மேன்மை. 2. Honor, reputation, கீர்த்தி. 3. Ostentation, display, ஆடம்பரம். W. p. 548. POOJYA. 4. Emptiness, or scantiness, as an auspicious term in denying a thing asked, இன் மை. 5. A concealment of one's poverty or defects, and assuming appearances, குற்றமறைக்கை. 6. [in astron.] A cipher in calculation, as standing in the place of a real number, but of no value. Thus sixty-three divided by seven, the quotient is nine, and பூச்சியம். 7. Blank in lotteries, திருவுளச்சீட்டின்தோற்பு. 8. [in calendar.] That which is unlucky or unpropitiousness, அதிஷ்டமின்மை. 9. Rareness, uncommonness, அருமை. சாப்பாட்டுக்குப்பூச்சியமாயிருக்கிறது. There is nothing to live upon. வேலைபூச்சியம். Want of work or employ. பூச்சியம்பண்ண, inf. To venerate, to esteem. 2. To conceal one's poverty, or defects. 3. To manage so as to get undeserved regard. 4. To make an old house or thing appear like new. பூச்சியவார்த்தை, s. An expression of respect, or a compliment, உபசாரச்சொல். பூச்சியன், s. Auspicious words, in place of inauspicious terms, fancied to be lucky for speaker or hearer. 2. Language of congratulation, or benediction, ஆசிவசனம். 3. Auspicious terms, together with their synonyms, used for beginning a poem. They are twenty-two in number: 1. திரு, wealth, &c.; 2. யானை, an elephant; 3. தேர், a chariot; 4. பரி, a horse; 5. கடல், the sea; 6. மலை, a mountain; 7. மணி, a gem; 8. பூ, a flower; 9. புகழ், praise; 1. சீர், good state or condition; 11. மதி, the moon; 12. நீர், water; 13. எழுத்து, a letter, a writing; 14. பொன், gold; 15. ஆரணம், Vedas, the law; 16. சொல், a word; 17. புயல், cloud; 18. நிலம், earth; 19. கங்கை, the Ganges; 2. உலகம், the world; 21. பரிதி, the sun; 22. அமிழ்தம், nectar. Others give more. (சது.) மங்கலஸ்நானம்--மங்கலநானம், s. Bathing for an auspicious ceremony, as a marriage, a temple-festival, &c. மங்கலதினம்--மங்கலநாள், s.
