aṭu (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. [used with the accusative.] To approach, approximate, come in contact with, கிட்ட. 2. To be near, close, adjacent, proximate, to propinquate, சேர. 3. To adhere, unite with, apply for protection, சார. 4. v. n. (with dative.) To belong, pertain, relate to, be fit for, suitable to, deserving of, conformable to, becoming, உரித்தாக. 5. To happen, occur, சம்பவிக்க. எனக்கடுத்தவர்கள், The people associated with or belonging to me, out own people, kindred. அவள் இவனுக்கடுத்தபெண். She is a suitable woman for him. ஒரு சொல்லிரண்டுமூன்று நான்கெல்லை முறைய டுக்கும். The same word will be repeated twice, thrice, or four times. (Nun.) அடாதது, appel. n. That which is improper, unfit. அவனுன் வீட்டிலே வால் அடாது. It is bad for you to have him come to your house. அடாநிந்தை, s. Injustice, unfounded reproach. அடுகிடை--அடுகிடைபடுகிடை, v. noun. [prov.] Lying down at a person's house determined not to leave till the thing asked is obtained, எழும்பாக்கிடை. அடுக்க, inf. [used adv.] Near, near at hand. அடுத்தடுத்துச்சொல்ல, inf. Inference, illation-one of the modes in logic of arriving at a conclusion, as from smoke to infer the presence of fire, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிகை. Wils. p. 34. ANUMANA. Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. ilingkam (p. 54) s. A sign, mark, token, symbol, அடையாளம். 2. The penis. ஆண்குறி. 3. The phallus or linga--a representation of the membra viri et mulieris used in temples as an object of worship, and regarded as deity under this emblem. It is also made of gold or silver and worn in a casket on the arm, the breast, or some other part of the body, as an amulet and as an object of veneration and worship. In both these cases it represents both sexes in conjunction, being emblematical of Siva and Sacti, or the male and female energies of the deity, சிவலிங்கம். In the Agama philosophy three lingas are mentioned; viz.: 1. Streelinga (ஸ்திரீலிங்கம்) the same as விந்து--the female linga common to male and female--including in both sexes the organs for secreting and containing the seminal fluid. 2. Purshalinga (புருட லிங்கம்) same as நாதம் (Natha) male linga, also common to both sexes, including in both sexes the genital organs for transmitting and combining the two productions essential to generation. 3. Napunchakalinga, (நபுஞ்சகம்) same as அலி, Ali or Alilinga, the neuter or rather hermaphrodite linga, being the physiological foundation of the other two, both as to their organization and functions. The image linga often bears this name; these three are distinguished by the terms அவன், அவள், அது. They are physiological and are found in such works as தத்துவக்கட்டளை, &c. There is another class of lingas called பஞ்சலிங் கம், the five lingas, popularly represented as deity under the emblems of the five elements, and worshipped in as many celebrated temples, viz.: பிருதிவிலிங்கம், earth-linga, worshipped at Canjeevara-அப்புலிங்கம், water-linga, worshipped at Tiruvanaicka--தேயுலிங்கம், fire linga, worshipped at Tiruvannamalay--வாயுலிங்கம், air-linga, worshipped at Tirukalatti-ஆகாயலிங்கம், ether-linga, worshipped at Sethumbaram. These are properly of a metaphysical or mystical character and belong to the arcana of Hinduism. The above designations are for popular use and are given from their physiological connection with the five bodies or casements of the soul, whose natural bases are the elements. earth, water, fire, air and ether, respectively. Among the initiated, the following are the terms employed, viz.: 1. ஸ்திரீலிங் கம், Streelinga--this is properly the organ entire--male and female with its functions; it is a figure (உரூபம்) the only one of the five to which form is ascribed. There is but one image, the representation of this. The சரிதை course of worship, i. e. the popular puranic course belongs to this. 2. புல்லிங்கம், this is defined to be உணர்வு; the course here is that of instruction and perception as to the action of the instrument, &c. To this belongs the கிரியை course of worship, the second great stage. 3. நபுஞ் சகலிங்கம், this is the stage of darkness, of neutrality, called the stage of darkness and doubt, and, as a course of worship, is included in the succeeding one. 4. பரமலிங் கம், this comes under the dominion of மயேச் சுரன், the concealer, and is called மறைப்பு; the course here is that of யோகம், the third great stage. 5. மகாலிங்கம், this is தெளிவு, the course of ஞானம், the last stage which exempts from births, and secures absorption in the supreme essence. Wils. p. 72. LINGA. இலிங்ககோளம், s. Glans penis. (Anat.) இலிங்கங்கட்டி--இலிங்கதாரி, s. One who wears the linga. இலிங்கசங்கமம், s. Symbols of the sexes united--probably a personification of the active energy of the deity and of matter, represented in metal. &c., or formed in the mind as objects of contemplation and worship. இலிங்கசூலை, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கபுடோல், s. The ஐவிரலி, creeper, Bryonia, L. இலிங்கபுராணம், s. One of the eighteen Puranas, புராணம்பதினெட்டிலொ ன்று. இலிங்கப்புற்று, s. A kind of venereal disease. இலிங்கரோகம், s. The venereal disease, ஆண்குறியில்வருமோர்புண். இலிங்கர்--இலிங்கிகள், s. Ascetics, Rishis who wear the Linga, சைவ தவப்பாலோர். இலிங்கி, s. An ascetic. 2. A worshipper of Siva, under the phallic emblem. 3. A hypocrite, a pretended devotee. ஸ்படிகலிங்கம், s. A linga made of quartz. பாணலிங்கம், s. A stone in the form of a linga--found in the river Nurbudda. பிரசாதலிங்கம், s. What is dedicated to Siva. பார்த்திபலிங்கம், s. Any thing assumed as an emblem of linga, and worshipped. சுயம்புலிங்கம், s. A linga supposed to be self-existent. சங்கமலிங்கம், s. A man of the Changama sect. குருலிங்கம், s. A spiritual father, a confessor. 17)

iḷkkārm (p. 56) s. [vul.] Indulgence, laxity, compliance; mildness, mitigation of punishment, &c., lenity, remission of a duty, tax, payment, &c., relaxation, இளகி யதன்மை. This word is specially appropriate to rational beings. சிறைகளுக்கிளக்காரங்கொடுக்கலாகாது. Slaves are not to be indulged, treated with lenity, &c. 2)

īrm (p. 58) s. Wet, moisture, humidity, dampness, நனைவு. 2. Coolness, agreeableness, pleasantness, amenity, குளிர்ச்சி. 3. (p.) Kindness, affection, amenity of disposition, tenderness, அன்பு. 4. Grace, favor, தயவு. 5. Knowledge, wisdom, அறிவு. 6. Duty, tribute, பகுதி. 7. Nature, பண்பு. 8. (fig.) Beauty, அழகு. 9. The குங்குமம் flower. ஈரச்சீலைபோட்டுக்கழுத்த றுத்தாள். Having applied a wet cloth she cut my throat; i. e. she has behaved treacherously toward me. ஈரமிக்கசிந்தையண்ணல். (Dharma) the kindhearted sovereign. ஈரமில்லாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம். Favor bestowed on those whose heart is void of love. ஈரக்கல், s. A red stone, one of the one-hundred-and-twenty kinds of ore, குருந்தக்கல். ஈரங்கொல்லியர், s. Washermen, வண்ணார்; [ex கொல், killing; i. e. expelling moisture.] ஈரஞ்சுவற, inf. To be imbibed or absorbed--as water in the sand, or moisture in the head after bathing, &c., ஈரமுலர. ஈரநாவு, s. A slanderous tongue. ஈரநாவுக்கெலும்பில்லை. There is no bone in the tongue of a slanderer. ஈரந்துவட்டல், v. noun. Rubbing off moisture from the head and body after bathing. ஈரப்பசுமை--ஈரப்பசை, s. Moisture, dampness--as in lands, clothes, esculent roots, &c., நரம்புலராமை. ஈரப்பசையுள்ளவன், s. A benevolent man, இரக்கமுள்ளவன். 2. A prosperous man, செல்வமுடையோன். ஈரப்பலா, s. The bread-fruit tree, the wood of which is used for musical instruments, the ஆசினி, Artocarpus incisa, L. ஈரப்பற்று, s. Moisture, dampness, ஈரக்கசிவு. 2. Property, சம்பத்து. 3. Benevolence, நன்றி. ஈரமதி, s. The cool moon, குளிர்ந்த சந்திரன். (p.) ஈரவன், s. The moon, சந்திரன். (p.) ஈரவிதைப்பு, v. noun. Sowing when the land is wet, ஈரநிலத்தில்விதைக்கை. 2. [prov.] A crop from grain sown in moist land. See புழுதிவிதைப்பு. ஈரவுள்ளி--ஈருள்ளி--ஈரவெங்கா யம்--ஈரவெண்காயம், s. Onion--the two latter are formed of வெம் and வெண், pungent and white, and காயம், pungency, Allium cepa. ஈரிக்க, inf. [vul. ஈர்க்க.] To become or be made wet, moist, damp, cool, ஈரமாக. 2. uṭṭaṇam (p. 59) --உஷ்ணம், s. Vehement or intense heat of fire, of the sun, of the weather, or of the body, வெப்பம். Wils. p. 165. USHN'A. உட்டணகாசம், s. A disease, வெப் பக்காசம். உட்டணகாலம், s. The hot season, hot weather. உட்டணங்கொண்டிருக்கிறவன், s. One affected with excessive heat in the body. உட்டணசஞ்சீவி, s. The பிரண் டை plant, Vitis quadrangularis. உட்டணசிகை, s. The sign in which either the planet mars, saturn or the sun is situated. உட்டணசைத்தியம், s. The use of hot or pungent things to cool the system--as pepper, hot water, &c. உட்டணபூமி, s. The food of birds and beasts in general, பற வைவிலங்கிவற்றினுணவு. Four kinds of eating are enumerated, viz.: 1. உண்டல், eating without mastication--as boiled rice, &c. 2. தின்றல், masticating, chewing--as meat, curries, &c. 3. நக்கல், licking--as honey, molasses, lapping. 4. பருகல், drinking, sucking--as a child. Sometimes a fifth is added, viz.: மென்றல், chewing--as spices, pungents, leaves, &c. kept in the mouth. உண்டிசுருங்குதல்பெண்டிர்க்கழகு. It is becoming in a woman to eat little. பேருண்டி, s.
