அழு
aẕu (p. 32) கிறேன், தேன், வேன், அழ, v. n. To weep, cry, இரங்க. 2. To bewail, lament, புலம்ப. 3. To whine, சிணுங்க. 4. To low, bellow, (as a cow for its call), bleat, (as a sheep), mew, (as a cat), caw, (as a crow), cry or hoot, (as an owl), கத்த. In some of these a cry of distress or anxiety is indicated as of the dam for its young. குடல்கூழுக்கழக்கொண்டைபூவுக்கழுகிறதா? Would you by adorning your hair with flowers while your belly is craving food? ஆண்டாண்டுதோறுமழுதுபுரண்டாலும் மாண்டார் வருவரோ மாநிலத்தில்? avā (p. 30) s. Desire, eagerness, avididity, greediness, craving, cupidity, ஆசை. 2. Intense or sensual desire, as lust, avarice, great hunger, thirst, &c., ஆசைப்பெருக் கம். 3. Descent, இறங்குகை. (p.) அவாவயின்விதும்பல், v. noun. The longing of a loving and affectionate husband and his wife when separated. அவாவறுக்க, inf. To extirpate the desires arising from the senses, ஆசைநீக்க, [ex அறு.] அவாவின்மை, s. Freedom from desire, exemption from avarice, lust and other sensual appetites, suppression of the passions, விருப்பமின்மை. 13) *

iḷi (p. 56) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To grin, show the teeth--as in cringing, craving, &c., பல்லிளிக்க. 2. To laugh in a silly manner, to simper, giggle, களகளவெனச்சிரிக்க. 3. v. a. To ridicule, scorn, deride, பரிகாசஞ்செய்ய. 4. To disgrace, contemn, அவமதிக்க. (c.) இளித்தவாய்ப்பட்டம், s. Notoriety for grinning, இளிச்சவாயனெனப்படுகை. 2. The character of a sauntering idler. 3. The state or character of one baffled or defeated in his projects. குரங்குபோலிளித்தவாயன். One who grins like a monkey. பல்லையிளிக்க, inf. To laugh foolishly. இளிச்சற்கண், s. Blear eyes, eyes sore with rheum. இளிப்பு--இளிவு, v. noun. Grinning, simpering, tittering, பல்லிளிக்கை. 2. Ridicule, scorn, derision, இழிவு. 3. Disgrace, நிந்தை. நாயையடித்துப்பல்லிளிவுபார்க்கிறதினாலேயென் ன? What will it avail to strike a dog and then look at its grin? [prov.] எள்ளினிளிவாமென்றெண்ணி. uḷi (p. 67) s. A chisel, மரவினையாளர்கரு வியினொன்று. 2. [prov.] A barber's instrument for paring nails, நகஞ்சீவி. 3. A place, இடம். 4. A form of the seventh case, ஏழனுருபு. 5. A burin, or graver, an instrument for engraving, சித்திரிக்குங்கருவி. உலக்கைதேய்ந்துளிப்பிடியாயிற்று. The pestle is worn down as small as the handle of a chisel--spoken of a person emaciated by disease. உளிக்குத்தாக்குத்த, inf. To buffet, to box, to strike with the fist. சிற்றுளி, s. eri (p. 73) கிறது, ந்தது, யும், எரிய, v. n. To glow, shine, give light, பிரகாசிக்க. 2. To burn, ignite; to be injured, or consumed by fire, to be scorched, to flame, அழல. 3. To burn--as a sore, or fever; to smart, to be inflamed, புண்முதலியவெரிய. 4. To be envious, jealous, to fret, be peevish, பொறா மைகொள்ள. 6. To burn as the stomach with hunger, வயிறெரிய. 7. To suffer pain --as from a heavy load on the head, &c., தலைமுதலியனவெரிய. (c.) அடுப்பெரிகிறது. The fire upon the hearth burns. மந்தமெரிந்துபோனது. A canine appetite, எரிவயிறு. (c.) எரிகுடலன், s. One who is always craving for food, தீபனமுள்ளவன். எரிகுன்மம், s. A stomachic disease, excessive heat, head-ache, &c., ஓர்நோய். எரிகொள்ளி, s. A fire-brand, கொள்ளிக்கட்டை. எரிசினம், s. Burning anger, கடுங் கோபம். எரிநரகம், s. The burning hell, ஓர்நரகம்--in distinction from others. எரிபடுவன், s. A burning ulcer or cancer, பிளவை. எரிபந்தம், s. A burning torch, a flambeau, தீவர்த்தி. 2. A kind of burning sensation all over the system from disease, எரிச்சல். எரிபிடாரி, s. An enraged or furious demoness, எரிதுர்க்கை. 2. A peevish, or fretful person-spoken disparagingly, எரிச்சலுடையவள். எரிபுழு, s. A kind of brownish, yellow caterpillar, the sight of which on leaving home, &c., is regarded as propitious, கம்பளப்பூச்சியினோர்வகை. எரிபூச்சி, s. A flying insect which, on contact, emits moisture that causes a burning smart and a discoloring of the skin, ஓர்பூச்சி. எரிமணி, s. Sparkling jewels, bright gems, பிரகாசமுள்ளமணி. எரிமுகி, s. A tree, the milk of whose seeds is pungent and caustic, and being indelible, is used in marking, சேங் கொட்டைமரம், Semicarpus anacardium. எரியவிழிக்க, inf. To look fiercely having the eyes flaming with rage, கோ பத்தோடுபார்க்க. எரிவண்டு, s. The Mylabris or blistering beetle, ஓர்வகைவண்டு. 2. An insect which strikes against the eye-ball inducing severe smarting, கண்ணிலடிக்கும் வண்டு. எரிவந்தம், s. A burning sensation in the body, எரிபந்தம். 2. (Met.) Anger, wrath, எரிச்சல். எரிவனம், s. A burning place for the dead, சுடுகாடு. எரிவரியன், s. A snake of the viper kind. பற்றியெரிய, inf. To take fire. எரிப்பு, v. noun. Burning, ignition, எரிவு. 2. s. Envy, jealousy, peevishness, malice, rancor, பொறாமை. 3. Satiety, nausea, நெஞ்செரிப்பு. எரிப்புக்காரன்--எரிப்புள்ளவன், s. An envious, impatient, peevish, or irritable person, பொறாமையுடையவன். எரிப்பெடுக்க, inf. To be peevish, cynical, querulous, எரிப்புண்டாக. ஓரெரிப்பாயெரிக்க, inf. To keep a fire burning, to heat continually--as in preparing medicines. ஓரெரிப்பாயெரித்துப்போட்டான்... He consumed it at one burning. 2. He has utterly destroyed (the family, town, &c., by injustice, oppression, &c.). எரியல், v. noun. Burning, எரிவு. 2. A style, a metallic pen, for writing on palm leaves, இலே கினி. எழுத்தாணிப்பூண்டு, s. A plant whose flower shoots up in the form of a style, கூத்தன்குதம்பை, Microrhyncus sarmentosus, L. மடக்கெழுத்தாணி--குண்டெழுத் தாணி--மடிப்பெழுத்தாணி--நெல்லிக்காயெழுத் தாணி--தேரெழுத்தாணி--வாரெழுத்தாணி--குட வெழுத்தாணி, s. The inauspicious use of a word in a poem subjecting the hero on whom it is written to evils, செய்யுட்குற்றத்தொன்று. எழுத்திலக்கணம், s. [in grammar.] Orthography. See இலக்கணம். எழுத்திலாவோசை, s. Inarticulate sounds. எழுத்துக்காரன், s. A writer, a scribe, a clerk, a secretary, a copyist, an amanuensis, எழுதுவோன். 2. A painter, a limner, சித்திரமெழுதுவோன். 3. A cloth painter, சீலையிலெழுதுவோன். எழுத்துக்காரியஸ்தன், s. A clerk, a writer, எழுதுவோன். எழுத்துக்கிறுக்கு. [prov.] The act of making written instruments, உடன்ப டிக்கையெழுதுகை. 2. Writings, documents, உடன்படிக்கைப்பத்திரம். எழுத்துக்குற்றம், s. Orthographical errors in speaking, writing, &c., spoken chiefly of false interpretation, &c., of the Puranas or other writings deemed sacred, எழுத்திலக்கணவழு. எழுத்துக்கூட்ட, inf. To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Chintz-painting, சீலையின்மீதெழுதுகை. 2. Writing, transcribing, copying, எழுதுந்தொழில். எழுத்தொலி--எழுத்தோசை, s. The sound of a letter. நுணுக்கெழுத்து, s. A character or letter written unintelligibly. கிறுக்கெழுத்து, s. A letter erased, cancelled; a letter badly written. கூட்டெழுத்து, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். The valued favors the deserving gain, Like sculptures in eternal rock remain; Of virtue's tribute charity is sure: But kind attentions to the worthless shown, Who debts and duties evermore disown, Like letters written in the wave endure. முதுவெழுத்து--தேறியவெழுத்து, s. Matured well-formed writing. நிலவெழுத்து, s. Letters written on sand. இளவெழுத்து, s. An immature hand not yet formed. சுட்டெழுத்து, s. A demonstrative letter. நெட்டெழுத்து, s. A long sounding letter. சார்பெழுத்து, s. Depending letters of which there are ten kinds, viz.: 1. உயிர்மெய். 2. ஆய்தம். 3. உயிரளபு. 4. ஒற்ற ளபு. 5. குற்றியலிகரம். 6. குற்றியலுகரம். 7. ஐகாரக்குறுக்கம். 8. ஔகாரக்குறுக்கம். 9. மகரக் குறுக்கம். 1. ஆய்தக்குறுக்கம். முதலெழுத்து, s. The twelve vowels and the eighteen consonants. வல்லெழுத்து, s. The six hardsounding letters--as க், ச், ட், த், ப், ற். மெல்்லெழுத்து, s. To set up stones to show the limits of provinces, sometimes as a menace to an invading foe. 2. To set up a stone, or build a monument of some deceased person. கல்நாதம்--கல்வீரியம்--கல்வேகம், s. Green vitriol, அன்னபேதி. கல்நார்--கல்லின்காரம்--கற்சத்து-கற்சவளை s. A kind of fossil, an incombustible substance, asbestos--used for decayed gums, &c., ஓர்மருந்து. கல்நெஞ்சு, s. A stony heart, a hard heart, வன்்னெஞ்சு. அவன்நெஞ்சுகல்லாய்ப்போயிற்று. His heart is petrified. கல்நெஞ்சன்--கல்நெஞ்சுள்ளவன், s. A hard hearted, unfeeling, or unrelenting person. கல்மடி, s. [vul.] A hard udder of a cow, காய்மடி. கல்மதம்--கன்மதம், s. Rock alum-one of the one hundred and twenty kinds of minerals. கல்மலை--கன்மலை, s. A rock, கல் வெற்பு, Alum plumosum. கல்மழை--கல்மாரி--கன்மழை, s. Hail, a shower of hailstones. கல்முதிரை, s. The tree yielding satin wood, Chloroxylon swietenia. கல்மொந்தன், s. A species of plantain, ஓர்வாழை. கல்லகம், s. A rocky mountain, மலை. கல்லக்காரம், s. Candied molasses, candy, பனங்கற்கண்டு. கல்லக்காரம்விளைய, inf. To become candied-as the molasses of sweet toddy. கல்லங்காய், s. A fruit which becomes as hard as a stone, கற்காய். கல்லடிக்க, inf. To hew or cut stone. 2. To strike the foot against a stone. கல்லடிமூலம், s. A kind of arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். கல்லடைப்பு, s. Retention of urine by gravel, நீரடைக்குமோர்நோய், Calculus. கல்லளை--கல்வளை, s. A cleft or chasm in a rock or mountain. மலைமுழைஞ்சு. கல்லறுக்க, inf. To make bricks, commonly, கல்லரிய. கல்லறை, s. A vault, a cave hewn out in a rock, sepulchre, a tomb, பிரேதக் குழி. 2. A cavern, குகை. 3. A room with a mortar or stone roof and floor, கல்வீடு. கல்லாங்காசு, s. A small round tile with which children play. கல்லாசாரி, s. A master-mason, an architect, கற்றச்சரின்தலைவன். கல்லிலேநாருரிக்க, inf. To strip fibres from a stone; i. e. to seek for what is unattainable or impossible--an absurdity. 2. To obtain by very great labor. கல்லிழைக்க, inf. To set precious stones, கற்பதிக்க. கல்லீயம், s. A hard kind of lead, pewter, வன்மையானஈயம். கல்லுக்காரர், s. Lapidaries, இரத் தினம்விற்போர். கல்லுக்குத்த, inf. [prov.] To frustrate a business by accusations or underhand representation, காரியத்தைத்தடைசெய்ய. கல்லுதிரி, s. A species of small pox with hard pustules, ஓரம்மை. (See உதிரி.) 2. [prov.] A kind of rice, ஓர்நெல். கல்லுத்தீர, inf. To cut and polish gems. கல்வெட்ட. கல்லுத்தூக்க, inf. To take up the anchor of a dhoney, to weigh anchor, நங் கூரந்தூக்க.--Note. Small boats and catamarans have frequently a stone for an anchor, and hence the preceding form. கல்லுப்பார், s. A rocky stratum, reefs, கற்பார். கல்லுப்பாவ--கற்பாவ, inf. To pave, to floor with stone, flag. கல்லுப்பாவினதரை, s. A pavement, stone floor. கல்லுப்பு, s. A kind of mineral salt, salt in lumps, ஓருப்பு. கல்லுப்பொளிய--கற்பொளிய, inf. [com.] To hew and pick grind stones, கல்லுக்கொத்த. கல்லுப்பொறுக்கி--கற்பொறுக்கி, s. A bird that eats little stones, தூதுணு ம்புறா. கல்லுப்போட, inf. To cast a stoneanchor, நங்கூரம்போட. 2. (fig.) To frustrate a business by accusations or under-hand representations, காரியத்தைத்தடை செய்ய. கல்லுயர்தோள், s. A mountain-like shoulder. கல்லுரல், s. A stone-mortar, கல் லினாற்செய்யப்பட்டவுரல். கல்லுவைக்க, inf. [prov.] To cast anchor. (See கல்லுப்போட.) 2. To apply snake-stones to venomous bites with incantations, &c., விஷக்கல்வைக்க. 3. To set a stone on the forehead as a punishment, the head being bent backward, and the face set toward the sun, நெற்றியிற் கல்லுவைக்க. 4. To crect a stone at a funeral ceremony (a சாச்சடங்கு, personifying a deceased ancestor, whose spirit is supposed to enter and remain in it while the ceremonies are performed. A deification of the soul is supposed to take place and the stone is made an object of worship, சிலைதாபிக்க. கல்லுவைத்துப்பார்க்க, inf. To apply snake-stones to venomous bites with enchantment, incantations, &c. கல்லுளி, s. A stone-cutter's chisel, கல்வெட்டுமுளி. கல்லுளிச்சித்தர், s. A sort of mendicants who carry chains in their hands. கல்லுளித்தச்சன், s. A stone-cutter. கல்லுளியுருக்கு, s. Steel of a very hard kind used for cutting stone. கல்லூசி, s. A medicinal stone. கல்லூற்று, s. A spring in a rocky soil, in wells, கல்லூறுநீரூற்று. கல்லூற்றுத்தண்ணீர், s. Water springing from a rock. கல்லெடுப்பு, v. noun. The bearing of a funeral stone. கல்லெரிப்பு--கல்லெரிப்புமேகம், s. Incontinence of urine, நீர்ச்சுருக்குநோய். (Mat. Ind.) கல்லெறி, v. noun. The throwing of a stone, கல்லெறிகை. 2. s. The distance of a stone's throw, கல்லெறிதூரம். 3. A sling, கவண். கல்லெறிய, inf. To throw or fling a stone, to pelt with stones. கல்லெறிதூரம், s. The distance of a stone's throw. கல்லைநீராக்கி, s. A kind of ore, மாமிசபேதி. கல்லொட்டி, s. A snail, நத்தை, (M. Dic.) கல்வீடு, s. A stone of brick-built house. கல்வெட்டி, s. A stone-cutter, a lapidary. கல்வெட்டுபவன். கல்வெட்டு, s. A stone cutting, engraving in stones, சிலாசாதனம். 2. A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s. A mixture of tin and iron. இரும்பும்வெள்ளீயமுங்கலந்தது. 2. [prov.] Hard inferior silver mixed with much alloy. கல்வேதி, s. A kind of ore, சகஸ் ரபேதி. கற்கட்ட, inf. கார்காரெனல்

குருவி
kuruvi (p. 126) s. A small bird, சிறுபறவை. 2. The nineteenth lunar mansion, மூலநாள். See மூலம். குருவிக்கூட்டைக்கூட்டைக்கோலாலேகலைக்கலாமா. Is it right to destroy a nest with a stick; i.e. to ruin a family? குருவிக்குத்தக்கராமேசுரம். A Ramisseram suitable to a small bird; i. e. the poor do not need great houses, &.c. ஒருகுருவியுமறியாமல். Not a bird (soul) knowing; i. e. with the utmost secrecy. அங்கேஒருகுருவியுமில்லை. There is not a soul there. குரீஇ, s. A poetic form of குருவி. குருவிக்கூடு, s. A bird's nest. குருவியெச்சம், s. [prov.] A kind of பாகல், with an edible, bitter fruit. குருவித்தலைப்பாக்கு--குருவிப்பாக்கு, s. [prov.] A peculiar species of arecanut, small but abundant. குருவிமீன், s. The name of a fish.
குறி
kuṟi (p. 132) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To design, intend; to contemplate, consider, think, கருத. 2. To imagine, to conceive, மதிக்க. 3. To appoint, determine, decree, விதிக்க. 4. To note down; to make the first draught in writing; to sketch an outline in painting, to trace, குறித்துக்கொள்ள. 5. To refer to, to denote, suggest, specify. சுட்டிக்காட்ட. 6. To designate, to characterize, to denominate, to name, பெயர் குறிக்க. 7. To address one's self--as in prayer; to have reference to--as a procuring cause, நோக்க. 8. To foretell, to presage, to prognosticate by astrology, palmistry, augury, &c., முன்னறிவிக்க. 9. To blow--as a chank, &c., ஊத. செவிடன்காதிலேசங்குகுறித்தாற்போல.
