akkiṉi (p. 4) s. Fire, தீ. 2. The god of fire and regent of the south-east, அக்கி னிபகவான். (See திக்குபாலகர்.) 3. (M. Dic.) The plant செங்கொடிவேலி. There are reckoned different kinds of அக்கினி, (a.) ஆயுரு வேதாக்கினி, of three kinds, for preparing medicines, as கமலாக்கினி, காடாக்கினி, தீபாக் கினி, which see. (b) Three other kinds called வேதாக்கினி for sacrificial purposes, as, காருகபத்தியம், தக்கணாக்கினியம், ஆகவனீயம். See தீ. (c.) The fire which will consume the world, காலாக்கினி. Wils. p. 6. A decayed cuttle-fish bone, Os sepi&ae;, கட னுரை. அக்கினிகலை, s. Breath coming from the nostrils, in சரசாத்திரம். அக்கினிகோத்திரம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். 2. One of the princely races. அக்கினிக்கட்டு, s. Restraining the power of fire by magic. அக்கினிக்கண்ணன், s. A fiery man, one having a terrible countenance. அக்கினிசன்மன், s. One born of fire, Skanda. See அக்கினிபூ. அக்கினிசாந்தி, s. [in astrology.] Offerings to fire; this is done with ghee, plantains, cakes, &c., after repeating an incantation one hundred and eight times to avert evil from அக்கினிதேவன். These offerings are made particularly at the time of marriage and of doing penance. அக்கினிசாலம், s. Tricks or artifices made by the agency of fire. அக்கினிச்சிலம், s. A plant, Gloriosa superba, L., கார்த்திகைக்கிழங்கு. அக்கினிச்சேர்வை, s. [prov.] A blister-plaster. அக்கினிட்டோமம்--அக்கினிஷ் டோமம், s. One of the twenty-one யாகம். அக்கினித்தம்பம்--அக்கினிஸ்தம்பம், s. A pillar of fire. 2. Stopping the power of fire by magic. 3. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம். அக்கினித்தம்பன், s. Siva as a column of fire. See தம்பம். அக்கினித்திரயம், s. The aggregate of the three fires maintained by the Brahmin householder, the Garhapatya, காருகபத்தியம், Dakshanagniyam, தட்சணாக் கினியம், and Ahavaneya, ஆகவனியம். See தீ. அக்கினித்திராவகம், s. Fire-water --such as nitric acid, &c. அக்கினிநாள்--அக்கினிநட்சத்திரம், s. [astrol.] An inauspicious nakshatra or day. There are three in a year, viz., when the sun is in the last quarter of the second nakshatra, பரணி, when in the 3d nakshatra, கார்த்திகை, and when in the 1st quarter of the 4th nakshatra, உரோகணி. அக்கினிபஞ்சகம், s. Danger of fire as an astrological result of the aggregate of five items. அக்கினிபயம், s. [in calendars.] Danger or fear of fire. அக்கினிப்பிரவேசம், s. Entering into or passing through fire, as a religious act. அக்கினிப்பிழம்பு, s. A body or flame of fire. அக்கினிப்பிளப்பு, s. A volcano, volcanic eruption. அக்கினிமண்டலம், s. The seat of fire in the system--the abdomen. அக்கினிமந்தம், s. Indigestion. அக்கினிமலை, s. A volcanic mountain. அக்கினிமிதிக்க, inf. If any one have the possession of the house of another for ten years, and this be generally known, the house becomes his. அனுபவிப்பு, v. noun. Enjoying, suffering, experiencing. அனுபாகம், s. (Anat.) Inference, illation-one of the modes in logic of arriving at a conclusion, as from smoke to infer the presence of fire, காரியத்தாற்காரணமறிகை. Wils. p. 34. ANUMANA. Some reckon the following four kinds; viz.: 1. தன்பொருட் டனுமானம். 2. பிறர்பொருட்டனுமானம். 3. அன் னுவயவனுமானம். 4. வெதிரேகவனுமானம். In அளவை the four are; 1. ஏதுவனுமானம், inference of an existing cause from sight of the effect, as of fire from the appearance of smoke. 2. பொதுவனுமானம், inference of the existence of a thing or reality of a thing by the presence of another, which is not wholly conclusive but probable and consistent. 3. எச்சவனு மானம், inference of a past cause from a present effect--as fishes in the rivers show that torrents have fallen on the mountains. 4. முதலனுமானம், inference of a future effect from a present cause-as that rainy clouds will bring rain. Another. 1. பூர்வக்காட்சி, inference of a thing from previous knowledge of its properties--as when we see a flower, we identify it from its smell. 2. அனுமானவ னுமானம், inference from an inference--as when we infer that a man is learned from his mode of treating a subject. 3. ஆகமவனுமானம், inference from the rules of Agamas--as the punishment is owing to former deeds. 2. A basket made of twigs closely twisted together, used to draw water. அலகுநிலை, s. The result of a reckoning, as the sum in addition, product in multiplication, &c. அலகுநிறுத்தல், v. noun. Placing a sword upright. This is a ceremony performed in the pagoda of துரோபதை, before the festival in honor to her is commenced. A sword is set up--the point downwards-- on the side of a vessel filled with water, and if it does not move, they think that the ceremony will be attended with success. This is also done in private houses. அலகுபருப்பு, s. A kind of pea. அலகுபனை, s. The long, flat leaved palmyra, Borassus flabelliformis, L. அலகுபாக்கு, s. Betel-nut sliced thin and boiled in water in which its husk has been boiled, giving it a reddish hue. அலகுபோட, inf. To perform a penance, in which the tongue is pierced with an iron wire, strings are drawn through the sides of the loins, or the breast cut with a knife. (c.) அலகுப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Closing the mouth in penance. அலகுவிறைப்பு, v. noun. Becoming cold and stiff as the jaws in childbirth, fits, hunger, &c. வேப்பலகு, s. The rib or small stalk of the leaves of the margosa tree. திருவலகு, s. A broom used in pagodas. சோற்றலகு, s. A sort of rice strainer, made of ribs of palm leaves. 23)

Think not lightly of numbers and letters, do not neglect reading and cyphering. எண்பொருளவாகச்செலச்சொல்லி. Communicating your thoughts in language easy to be understood-எண்சாத்திரம், s. The science of numbers, arithmetic, mathematics, கணி தம். எண்கூட்டல், s. Addition. எண்சுவடி, s. The multiplication table either of whole numbers, or fractions, ஓர்சுவடி. 2. An account book, கணக்குப்புஸ்தகம். எண்செய்யுள், s. A poem celebrating the country, town, names, titles, &c. of a hero. It consists of any number of verses from ten to onethousand inclusive. and is named from the number of verses it contains, ஓர்பிர பந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். எண்ணர், s. Astronomers, கணிதர். ஏரணங்காணென்பரெண்ணர். Astronomers will call this a treatise of arithmetic. (கோவை.) எண்ணிட, inf. To count, reckon, calculate. எண்ணிடஇடமொன்றியின்றியெங்கணும்நிறைந்த தன்றே. (The army) crowded the whole field so that there was hardly any room left--not so much as even to hold a rape seed. எண்ணில்கண்ணுடையோன், s. God, கடவுள். 2. Budha, புத்தன். (p.) எண்ணில்காலம், s. Incalculable time, அளவில்லாதகாலம். (சத.) எண்ணிறக்க, inf. To exceed computation, conception, அளவிறக்க. எண்ணின்வகுப்பு, s. The tamil enumeration table which consists of thirty-six digits; viz.: 1. ஏகம், units. 2. தசம், tens. 3. சதம், hundreds. 4. சகஸ் திரம், thousands. 5. அயுதம், ten thousands. 6. நியுதம், hundred thousands, &c. எண்ணும்மை, s. eṇṇm (p. 73) s. Thought, opinion, supposition, imagination, conception, &c., நினைப்பு. 2. Purpose, intention, design, object, determination, நோக்கம். 3. Estimation, estimate, conjecture, guess, surmise, மதிப்பு. 4. Arrogance, presumption, elation, இறுமாப்பு. 5. Hope, expectation, indulging fancy; fancied or prospective happiness, reverie, speculation, musing chimera, conceit, நம்பிக்கை. 6. Judgment, conviction, கருத்து. எண்ணமுற்றுரைக்கின். Were I to reckon and declare the number-- (நைட.) எண்ணியாரெண்ணமிழப்பர். The enemy who expected to conquer us will be disappointed. (குறள்.) தானென்கிறவெண்ணம்--நானென் கிறவெண்ணம், s. Self-conceit, self-importance. இன்னானென்கிறவெண்ணமவனுக்கில்லை. Rank of station with him is a matter of no consideration. எண்ணக்குறிப்பு, s. Motive, object, intention, design, நோக்கம். எண்ணங்குலைய, inf. To be perplexed in mind, மனங்கலங்க. 2. To be disconcerted in a plan, to be thwarted in one's expectation, எண்ணம்வீணாக. 3. To lose reputation, மதிப்புக்கெட. எண்ணங்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To entertain hope. 2. To be anxious, to be in deep concern. 3. To intend, purpose. 4. To muse on, ponder. 5. To build castles in the air. எண்ணந்தப்ப, inf. To be disappointed, to prove incorrect--as an opinion, மதிப்புத்தவற. எண்ணத்தப்பு--எண்ணத்தவறு, s. Disrespect to a superior, அவமதிப்பு. 2. He was musing and perplexed with many thoughts. உனக்குநாசகாலத்தையெண்ணியிருக்கிறார்கள். They are meditating thy destruction. இதையொருகுற்றமாயெண்ணுவார்களா. Will they regard this as a fault? எண்ணப்பட, inf. To be counted, reckoned. 2. To be esteemed, respected. எண்ணத்தொலையாதது--எண்ணப் படாதது, appel. n. That which cannot be counted. எண்ணாதகண்டன்--எண்ணாதநெஞ் சன், s. A very bold man, destitute of fear; a rash, or heedless man. எண்ணாதவன், s. A reckless person, a desperate man. பாவபுண்ணியங்களையெண்ணாதவன். One who has no regard either for virtue or vice. எண்ணாமற்பேச, inf. To speak without due regard to rank, station, &c., மதியாமற்பேச. 2. To speak without thought, யோசியாமற்பேச. எண்ணார், s. Enemies, பகைவர். (p.) எண்ணிப்பார்க்க, inf. To count, number. 2. To consider maturely, deliberate, to weigh in the mind. எண்ணிப்பேச, inf. To speak considerately or deliberately. எண்பட, inf. [prov.] To be discovered, to be caught, to be found out, அகப்பட. எண்ணல், v. noun. Calculation, reckoning, கணக்குச்செய்தல். 2. Computation. எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which a number is put for the thing numbered--as காலாலேநடந்தான், he walked on one-fourth (of his length); i. e. his leg, which is so called because it bears that proportion to individual stature. எண்ணிக்கை, v. noun. Regard, esteem, honor, estimation, reverence, மதிப்பு. 2. Number, numbering, கணிப்பு. --Note. This word is irregular in its formation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குப்பிறந்தபிள்ளைகள். Children who seem born only to make up a number, being of no estimation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. சேவகரையெண்ணிக்கைசெய்கிறது. To muster soldiers. எண்ணிக்கைகொடுக்க, inf. A style, a metallic pen, for writing on palm leaves, இலே கினி. எழுத்தாணிப்பூண்டு, s. A plant whose flower shoots up in the form of a style, கூத்தன்குதம்பை, Microrhyncus sarmentosus, L. மடக்கெழுத்தாணி--குண்டெழுத் தாணி--மடிப்பெழுத்தாணி--நெல்லிக்காயெழுத் தாணி--தேரெழுத்தாணி--வாரெழுத்தாணி--குட வெழுத்தாணி, s. Different kinds of iron pens. எழுத்தாளர், s. Men of letters, learned men, அறிஞர். 2. Clerks, writers, எழுது வோர். எழுத்தானந்தம், s. The inauspicious use of a word in a poem subjecting the hero on whom it is written to evils, செய்யுட்குற்றத்தொன்று. எழுத்திலக்கணம், s. [in grammar.] Orthography. See இலக்கணம். எழுத்திலாவோசை, s. Inarticulate sounds. எழுத்துக்காரன், s. A writer, a scribe, a clerk, a secretary, a copyist, an amanuensis, எழுதுவோன். 2. A painter, a limner, சித்திரமெழுதுவோன். 3. A cloth painter, சீலையிலெழுதுவோன். எழுத்துக்காரியஸ்தன், s. A clerk, a writer, எழுதுவோன். எழுத்துக்கிறுக்கு. [prov.] The act of making written instruments, உடன்ப டிக்கையெழுதுகை. 2. Writings, documents, உடன்படிக்கைப்பத்திரம். எழுத்துக்குற்றம், s. Orthographical errors in speaking, writing, &c., spoken chiefly of false interpretation, &c., of the Puranas or other writings deemed sacred, எழுத்திலக்கணவழு. எழுத்துக்கூட்ட, inf. To spell, join letters. எழுத்துக்கூட்டாமல்வாசிக்க, inf. To read fluently. எழுத்துச்சந்தி, s. Union of letters in the combination of words, எழுத்துப்பு ணர்ச்சி. எழுத்துச்சாரியை--எழுத்தின்சாரி யை, s. Particles employed to express the names of the letters--as அ with the consonants; கரம், காரம் and கான் with the short letters and sometimes with the consonants; காரம் with the long vowels and கான் with ஐ and ஔ. In common use, ன is used with the short, and ஆன and அன்னா with the long letters. Some other forms are also given in ancient grammars and they are also occasionally used. எழுத்துச்சுருக்கம், s. A kind of play on letters by omitting one after another in regular succession, and thus changing the sense, ஓரணி. எழுத்துச்சேலை--எழுத்துப்புடவை, s. A woman's fancy dress whether printed or embroidered, சித்திரவஸ்திரம். எழுத்துத்திரிதல், v. noun. Permutation of letters--the change of one letter for another according to grammatical rules, for the purposes of euphony, மூவிகாரத்தொன்று. எழுத்துநடை, s. Easy and fluent reading. எழுத்துப்படிய, s. inf. To become trained--as the hand to writing; to have a settled hand. எழுத்துப்பதிக்க, inf. To indent in writing, பதியவெழுத. 2. To enter, write, imprint, settle an affair by writing. எழுத்துப்பதிய, inf. To be indented--as writing, engraving. 2. To be entered, written. எழுத்துப்பிழை--எழுத்துப்பிசகு, s. Error in spelling. எழுத்துப்பொருத்தம், s. The five classes into which the letters are superstitiously divided. (See தசப்பொருத்தம்.) 2. Choosing a name for a child so as to begin with one of the letters ascribed in astrology to the lunar mansion, under whose influence the child is supposed to have been born, பிறந்தநட்சத்திரத்திற்குப் பொருந்தப்பெயரிடுகை. எழுத்துமடக்கு, s. Repetition of, the same letter in a verse, ஓரணி--as நா நாநாதம்கூடிசைநாடுந்தொழிலேவாய். எழுத்துவருத்தனம், s. A kind of diversion by means of poetry, a play on letters, the meaning changing as letters are added. See மிறைக்கவி. எழுத்துவாசனை, s. The art of reading and writing, எழுத்துநடை. எழுத்துவேலை, s. Chintz-painting, சீலையின்மீதெழுதுகை. 2. Writing, transcribing, copying, எழுதுந்தொழில். எழுத்தொலி--எழுத்தோசை, s. The sound of a letter. நுணுக்கெழுத்து, s. A character or letter written unintelligibly. கிறுக்கெழுத்து, s. A letter erased, cancelled; a letter badly written. கூட்டெழுத்து, s. Double letters, letters written together in a contracted form--as 9 for க்க; ட்ட for ட்ட; ? for த்த, &c. நீர்மேலெழுத்து, s. An inscription on the water--a simile expressive of that which is evanescent. கல்மேலேழுத்து, s. An inscription on a stone expressive of that which is stable and enduring. நல்லோரொருவர்க்குச்செய்தவுபகாரங் கன்மேலெழுத்துப்போற்காணுமே--அல்லாத ஈரமிலாநெஞ்சத்தார்க்கீந்தவுபகாரம் நீர்மேலெழுத்திற்குநேர். The valued favors the deserving gain, Like sculptures in eternal rock remain; Of virtue's tribute charity is sure: But kind attentions to the worthless shown, Who debts and duties evermore disown, Like letters written in the wave endure. முதுவெழுத்து--தேறியவெழுத்து, s. Matured well-formed writing. நிலவெழுத்து, s. Letters written on sand. இளவெழுத்து, s. An immature hand not yet formed. சுட்டெழுத்து, s. A demonstrative letter. நெட்டெழுத்து, s. A long sounding letter. சார்பெழுத்து, s. Depending letters of which there are ten kinds, viz.: 1. உயிர்மெய். 2. ஆய்தம். 3. உயிரளபு. 4. ஒற்ற ளபு. 5. குற்றியலிகரம். 6. குற்றியலுகரம். 7. ஐகாரக்குறுக்கம். 8. ஔகாரக்குறுக்கம். 9. மகரக் குறுக்கம். 1. ஆய்தக்குறுக்கம். முதலெழுத்து, s. aintu (p. 80) adj. or noun. Five, ஓரெண். ஐங்கணை, s. Five flowers feigned to be the arrows of Hindu cupid. (p.) ஐங்கணைக்கிழவன், Kama, the Hindu cupid, lit. lord of the five arrows, மன்மதன். (p.) ஐங்கரன், s. Ganesa, the five-handed. He is represented with an elephant's head, the proboscis or trunk is figuratively reckoned as a hand, விநாய கன். (p.) ஐங்கரற்கிளையோன், s. A name of Skanda, முருகன். 2. Verapattra, வீரபத் திரன். (p.) ஐங்கலம், s. Sixty marcals. ஐங்காதம், s. Five leagues. ஐங்காயம், s. The five kinds of காயம். (See காயம்.) 2. Other five kinds are used in witchcraft, viz.: 1. மிளகு, pepper. 2. வெந்தயம், dill. 3. ஓமம், cardamom. 4. வெள்ளுள்ளி, garlic. 5. பெருங் காயம், assaf&oe;tida. ஐங்காயத்தூள்--ஐங்காயவுண்டை, s. The five confidential servants of a king, அரசர்க்குக்குழு, viz.: 1. மந்தியர், ministers. 2. புரோகிதர், priests. 3. சேனாபதியர், generals. 4. தூதர், ambassadors. 5. சாரணர், spies. ஐங்கோணம், s. A pentagon, quinquangular figure, பஞ்சகோணம். ஐஞ்ஞூறு, s. Five-hundred, ஐந் நூறு. ஐந்தரு, s. The five trees in the world of Indra, பஞ்சதாரு, viz.: 1. அரிச்சந்த னம். 2. கற்பகம். 3. சந்தானம். 4. பாரிசாதம். 5. மந்தாரம். ஐந்தருநாதன், s. Indra, lord of the five trees in the celestial world, which yield whatever is asked or desired of them, இந்திரன். (p.) ஐந்தலைநாகம், s. A fabulous fiveheaded cobra, of which each head is supposed to contain a very precious gem. It is said to be found in mountainous districts and to have the power of flying. ஐந்தவித்தல், s. The control of the senses, ஐம்பொறியடக்கல். ஐந்தவித்தானாற் றலகல்விசும்புளார்கோமானிந்திர னேசாலுங்கரி. Indra, the god of the celestials, is a living monument of the wonderful power of those who control the five senses. (குறள்.) ஐந்தனுருபு, s. The fifth case (இன்) --one of the ablatives denoting procession, similitude, limit, and means, ஐந்தாம் வேற்றுமையுருபு. மலையின்வீழருவி. Torrents rushing from the mountains. காக்கையிற்கரிதுகளம்பழம். The களா berry is as black as a crow. மதுரையின்வடக்குச்சிதம்பரம். Sethamparam is situated to the north of Madura. கல்வியிற்பெரியன்கம்பன். Kampan made himself great by learning. ஐந்தாங்கால், s. The first post of the marriage shed when planted on the fifth day before the marriage, the third, fifth, or seventh day being chosen, as it may be lucky or otherwise, according to astrological calculation, மணப்பந்தரின் ஐந்தாங்கால். ஐந்தானம், s. The fifth lunar asterism, மிருகசீரிடம். (p.) ஐந்திணை, s. The five kinds of land, &c., ஐவகைநிலம். (See திணை.) 2. The closest friendship or love between husbands and wives, அன்புடைக்காமம். (p.) ஐந்திணைச்செய்யுள், s. A poem in which the five different kinds of soil are described and illustrated--one of the ninety-six பிரபந்தம், ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (p.) ஐந்துருவாணி, s. A shaft connecting the floors or stages of a car. See அ ஞ்சுருவாணி. ஐந்துறுப்படக்கி, s. The tortoise, ஆமை. (p.) ஐந்தொகைவினா, s. [in arithmetic.] The rule of five or double rule of three, ஓர்வகையெண்வினா. ஐந்தொழில், s. The five divine operations, பஞ்சகிருத்தியம், viz.: 1. சிருஷ்டி, creation or reproduction. 2. ஸ்திதி, preservation. 3. சங்காரம், destruction, reduction of things to their primitive elements. 4. திரோபவம், that act of the deity by which he conceals from the sentient soul its future destiny for purposes of moral discipline; concealing, obscuring; i. e. involving the soul in ignorance or illusion by means of magic. 5. அனுக்கிரகம், grace, the various means adopted for the deliverance of the soul from the power of illusion and consequent transmigrations.
