ilāñcaṉam (p. 53) --இலாஞ்சனை, s. A mark, sign, symbol, அடையாளம். 2. A seal, signet bearing the name or symbol of the owner, முத்திரை. 3. A name, an appellation, பெயர். Wils. p. 719. LANCHANA. 4. Fame, markworthiness, கீர்த்தி. இலாஞ்சனைக்குலைச்சல், s. Disrepute, want of reputation. இலாஞ்சனைபண்ண, inf. To honor, esteem. இலாஞ்சனையுள்ளவன், s. A remarkable, noted or famous person. 66)

utir (p. 60) --உதிரு, கிறது, உதிர்ந்தது, உ திரும், உதிர, v. n. To drop off, fall off--as leaves, fruits, &c.; to be blasted, nipped, to fall off--as the hair, by disease or age, சொரிய. 2. To be shaken with the wind or otherwise, அசைக்கப்பட்டுதிர. 3. To crumble, fall to pieces as cakes (பிட்டு), பிதிர. 4. To fall as tears, சிந்த. 5. To die (used in imprecations), சாவ. நீசீக்கிரமுதிர்ந்துபோவாய். You shall die soon (a curse). தாரகையுதிர்ந்த. The stars fell. (ஸ்காந்தம்.) பூவுதிரப்பிஞ்சுதிரக்காயுதிரக்கனியுதிர. Let blossoms, buds, unripe fruits, and fruits drop off; i. e. let people of all ages die--an imprecation. உதிர்ந்தசருகு, s. Withered leaves fallen from the tree. உதிர்ந்தசருகுணவொழியவுணவில்லான். He who feeds upon dry leaves abstaining from all kinds of food. (பாரதம்) உதிர்பருவம், s. The quality or consistency of a thing that easily crumbles. உதிர்மணல், s. Loose sand a little moist. இலையுதிர்காலம், s. The season of the fall of the leaf. உதிரி, s. That which falls off, or is separated, exfoliation, உதிர்ந்தது. 2. A disease, smallpox of various kinds, so called from the scabs falling off, ஓர்வைசூரி. 3. A species of plantain, ஓர்வகைவாழை. உதிரிக்குத்து, s. Aching pain incident to one attacked with உதிரி. உதிரித்தழும்பு, s. The pits left by the smallpox, அம்மைவடு. வரகுதிரி, s. A species of smallpox whose pustules are remarkably diminutive, like வரகு seeds. சருகுதிரி, s. A species of smallpox attended by the sloughing away of the affected flesh. மிளகுதிரி, s. A species of smallpox, the pustules of which are the size of pepper seeds. கல்லுதிரி, s. A species of smallpox the pustules of which are very large. உதிர், s. Powder, dust, any thing crumbled, பொடி. உதிர்வு, v. noun. Falling off, &c., உதிர்கை. 2. Crumbling to pieces, உகுகை. 20)

kuṟi (p. 132) s. Mark, sign, stamp, symbol, token, emblem, indication, அடையாளம். 2. Idea, notion, intention, suggestion, hint, insinuation, குறிப்பு. 3. Omen, presage, prognostic, forerunner, சகுனம். 4. Personal qualities, character, குணம். 5. A time, a turn--as in ஒருகுறி, once, தரம். 6. Time, days, season--as in இக்குறி, now-a-days, காலம். 7. Assertion of a speculative truth --as matter of fact, in constradistinction to செய்கை, a practical precept, இவைஇன்ன னவெனமனத்தாற்றெளிந்துரைப்பது. 9. The sexual emblems, ஆண்பெண்குறி. 1. Prognostication by observing the position and direction of a ladle let fall perpendicularly--as commonly practised by women. ஆடைக்குறி, s. A line across the ends of a cloth. கைக்குறி, s. Omens by lines on the palms; palmistry. முகக்குறி, s. Indications from the face. துர்க்குறி, s. A bad sign, a bad omen. நற்குறி, s. A good sign, a good omen. மரணக்குறி, s. Signs of death; omens of death--as pointed out by the shastras. குறிகண்டுநோதல், v. noun. [in parturition.] Labor pains after the discharge of liquor amnii, or the first presentation. குறிகாண, inf. To appear--as signs, or symptoms. 2. To forebode, to betoken, to typify. 3. [in parturition.] To have slight discharges at or before the presentation. குறிபோட--குறியிட, inf. To mark, sign, line, rule, &c. குறிசுட, inf. To brand marks upon cattle. குறிக்கோள், v. noun. strenuous perseverance in any one persuit; attachment to one object, பராயணம். 2. Union, unity, congruity, ஒற்றுமை. 3. The act of comprehending or understanding, கிரகித்தல். 4. The state of being distinguished or illustrious, மேன்மைப்பாடு. குறிக்கொள்வோர், s. Persons who have their heart and mind on one pursuit or object. (நிக.) See பராயணர். குறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To conceive, comprehend, understand, கிரகித்துக்கொள்ள. 2. To be remarkable, distinguished above modiocrity, மேன்மைபட. குறிகேட்க, inf. To consult a fortuneteller, a diviner, &c. குறிசொல்ல, inf. To tell one's fortune, to divine, to presage. குறிபார்க்க, inf. To observe signd; to prognosticate. குறிபார்த்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To tell people their fortunes. குறிகெட்டவன், s. A dishonest and shameless man; an unprincipled man. குறியானவன்--குறியுள்ளவன், s. A principle man. 2. A respectable, honest, upright man; a man of principle. குறிகாரன்--குறிப்புக்காரன், s. A good marks-man. குறிதப்ப, inf. To miss the mark. 2. To fail--as events foretold by fortunetellers. குறிதப்பாமற்போட்டான். He shot at a mark without missing it; he hit the mark. குறிபார்த்துச்சுட, inf. Sacred land, or Central India, as புண்ணியபூமி. புண்ணியக்கருத்து, s. A virtuous or charitable disposition, தருமசிந்தை. புண்ணியசடம்--புண்ணியசரீரம்--புண் ணியதேகம், s. A meritorious, holy man. [in admiration.] புண்ணியசனேசுவரன், s. Kuvêra குபே ரன்; [ex புண்ணியசனம் et ஈசுவரன்.] புண்ணியசன்மம், s. One born with a virtuous disposition on account of good deeds in former births. புண்ணியசாலி, s. A charitable person. புண்ணியசுரூபி--புண்ணியசொரூபி, s. One remarkable for virtue; (lit.) the image or virtue. புண்ணியசாந்து, s. Cow-dung, சாணம். புண்ணியசேடம், s. Merit attaching to the soul at the expiration of each state of existence, to be enjoyed in other births, நல்லூழின்மீதி. புண்ணியதலம்--புண்ணியஸ்தலம், s. A place of resort for worship. புண்ணியதானம், s. Sacred gifts, made to brahmans, or others on special occasions. புண்ணியதிரணம், s. A sacrificial grass, white Kusa, வெண்டருப்பை; [ex திரணம், grass.] புண்ணியதினம். s. A holy day, adapted to religious duties. புண்ணியதீர்த்தம், s. Sacred bathing, a place for religious bathing. புண்ணியத்தானம்--புண்ணியஸ்தானம், [in astrol.] The ninth from the rising sign at birth. See தானம். 2. As புண்ணி யஸ்தலம். புண்ணியத்தோற்றம், 4. Four kinds of merit, attaching to the soul: 1. தவம், penance, self-mortifications, &c., 2. ஒழுக் கம், good conduct, moral and ceremonial; 3. கொடை, liberality, alms-giving; 4. கல்வி, education. புண்ணியநதி, s. A sacred river, as the Kâvery. புண்ணியபலம்--புண்ணியபலன், s. Fruit of meritorious deeds. புண்ணியபுத்திரன், s. A child of high religious merit. புண்ணியபுருஷன், s. As புண்ணியவா ளன். புண்ணியபூ--புண்ணியபூமி, s. [also திவ் வியபூமி.] The holy land of the Hindus, central Asia, bounded on the north by the Hymalayas, south by the Vindya mountains, and on the east and west by the sea. புண்ணியமுதல்வன்--புண்ணியமூர்த்தி, s. The first in merit--God, கடவுள். 2. Buddha, புத்தன். புண்ணியம்பலித்தல், v. noun. The resulting of merit in earthly prosperity. புண்ணியராத்திரம், s. A propitious night for ceremonies; [ex ராத்திரம்=இராத் திரி.] புண்ணியவதி--புண்ணியவாட்டி, s. A meritorious woman. புண்ணியவாளன்--புண்ணியவான், s. [fem. புண்ணியவாட்டி.] A man of high religious character. புண்ணியன், s. A righteous being, divine or human. 2. Siva, சிவன். 3. Argha of the Jainas, அருகன். புண்ணியாகவாசனம், s. An appeasing or propitious ceremony, a peace-offering, ஓர்சடங்கு. 2. Purification of a house from any ceremonial defilement, ஆசூசநி வாரணம்.--Sans. differs. See W. p. 541. PUN'YAHAVACHANA. புண்ணியாத்துமா, s. A righteous soul, a charitable person, male of female. புண்ணியோதயம், s. Manifestation of meritorious deeds, புண்ணியம்தோன்றுகை. 2)

māyai (p. 350) s. Falsehood, vanity, ideality of the world, பொய். 2. A power or energy, as மாயாசத்தி. 3. Deceit, fraud, trick. வஞ்சம். 4. Tricks, jugglery, இந்திரசாலம். 5. Lukshmi. W. p. 657. MAYA. 6. Kali, காளி. 7. Rati, wife of Kaman. இரதி. 8. A town, as மாயாபுரி. 9. Matter, See வித்தியாதத்துவம்-Note. This word retains its Sanscrit pronunciation in combination. மாயை, 5. Five kinds of delusion, or evil, on the principles of Adwitas or followers of Sankaracharya. They are: 1. தமம், the tamasa disposition--darkness, or obscurity of mind; 2. மாயை, ideality, inherent evil, personified matter; 3. மோகம், depravity, error; 4. அவித்தை, ignorance, folly; 5. அநிர்தம், that which is without, or strange, opposed to God. அதோமாயை--அசுத்தமாயை, s. Subordinate or inferior illusion, or Maya. அதோமாயையிலிருந்துபிரகிருதிதோன்றும். The female principle in nature springs from the inferior Maya. சுத்தமாயை--மகாமாயை, s. Primitive or original Maya, as காரணமாயை. மாயாகாரியம், s. The effects of Maya, its various changes, and diversifications in nature. மாயாசங்கற்பம், s. Any remarkable effect of Maya by way of creation or destruction. மாயாசத்தி, s. A power, energy, or principle which contains the five kinds of மாயை, given above. See மாமாயை. மாயாசாலம்--மாயாசித்து, s. Dissimulation, treachery, imposture. மாயாதருமம், s. Transient or deceptive merit, பொய்ப்புண்ணியம். 2. Nature or peculiarity of Maya, மாயையின்றன்மை. மாயாதர்மம், 2. The two peculiarities of Maya are: 1. சங்கோசம், contracting; 2. விகாசம், expanding. மாயாதாரகம், s. That which has Maya for a principal cause. மாயாதாரணை, s. Things formed by Maya, the third of nine classes. See தாரணை. மாயாதேகம், s. A transitory body, நிலை யற்றசரீரம். மாயாதேவி, s. The mother of Buddha, புத்தன்றாய். மாயாதேவிசுதன், s. The son of Maya, Buddha. (சது.) மாயாபஞ்சகம், s. As மாயை, 5. மாயாபாசம், s. Being under the influence of Maya. மாயாபுரி, s. One of the seven famous towns. See புரி. 2. Brass, பித்தளை. மாயாப்பிரதிவிம்பர், s. [hon.] He whose glories, are reflected, in creation, &c., by means of Maya, மாயையாற்பிரதிபலிக்குமுருவு டையோர். (உபநி-124.) மாயாமலம், s. As மாயைமலம். மாயாரூபம், s. Feigned shapes, forms assumed, or caused by super-human powers. மாயாலட்சணம், s. The properties of Maya. They are five; 1. அசத்து, unreality; 2. சடம், matter; 3. அநித்தம், transientness; 4. துக்கம், distress; 5. கண்டம், division, a part. மாயாலீலை, s. Sportive illusions, as of Krishna, Siva, &c. See இலீலை. மாயாவல்லபம், s. The power or efficacy of Maya. மாயாவாதம், s. A religion whose doctrines are false, skepticism, ஓர்மதம். மாயாவாதி, s. Destroyer of Maya, and its evils. (பிரபுலிங்.) 2. One of the above religion, or sect; a skeptic. மயாவித்தை, s. Magic, as மாயவித்தை. மாயாவிமோசனம், s. Removal of Maya. மாயாவினோதம், s. Legerdemain, sportive deception, கண்கட்டுவித்தை. மாயைமலம், s.
