ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். Increasing heat or sunshine as the sun rises towards the meridian, காலைவெய்யில்--opp. இறங்குவெய் யில். ஏறெடுக்க, inf. To lift up the head, eyes, &c., மேலெடுக்க. 82)

cumai (p. 194) s. [vul. செமை.] A burden, load, weight, பாரம். 2. Bounden duty, obligation, responsibility, accountability, onerousness, கடமை. 3. The burden of a family, of state, &c., குடும்பபாரம்; [ex சும, v.] (c.) சுமைகட்ட, inf. To make up a load. 2. To place a burden on one. சுமைகாரன்--சுமையாள், s. A porter, a carrier. 2. A man with a load, a bearer. சுமைகூலி, s. Porterage. சுமைதலை, s. See சுமதலை. சுமைதாங்கி, s. A platform of stone, brick or timbers, by the road side, to rest burdens upon. (c.) சுமைதீர்தல், v. noun. The removing of a burden--spoken of the marriage of a daughter, or relief from any heavy responsibility. சுமைதூக்கிவிட, inf. As சுமைகட்ட, 2. சுமைமாற்ற, inf. The incarnation of benevolence. தயாவிருத்தி, s. Increase of grace, கிரு பைமிகுதல். 2. The fourteen acts of beneficence, தயாவிருத்தி, 14.--The first seven relate to the soul, the other seven to the body. Of the soul; 1. களாபடனம், education, communication of knowledge, கல் விபயிற்றுகை; 2. வியாதாகாரம், comfort to the afflicted, consolation of mind, துயர்தீர்க்கை; 3. நிர்க்கத்தண்டனம், relieving from punishment, தண்டம்நீக்குகை; 4. சந்தேகவாரணம், removing doubts, contingency, &c., ஐயந் தேற்றுகை; 5. அன்னியகுணசகனம், hearing of the superiority of others without envy, and enduring their infirmities with patience, பிறந்குணத்தழுக்காறின்றிப்பொறுத்தல்; 6. பரதிருதுனயோகம், forgetting the evils inflicted by others and seeking to do them good, பிறராற்செய்யப்படுந்தீமையைமறந்தூன்றிநி னைக்கை; 7. பார்த்ததேவப்பிராத்திதம், praying for the prosperity and good of others, பிறர்நிமித்தந்தேவனைவழிபடுதல். Those regarding the body or சத்தாங் கோபகராம் are: 1. அன்னம், food, giving boiled rice, உணவு; 2. பானம், drink, குடிக்க நீர்; 3. அம்பரம், raiment, வஸ்திரம்; 4. மந்திரம், a dwelling, இடம்; 5. தாசபாலனம். preservation from slavery, அடிமைகாத்தல்; 6. காராமயத்திரிதயமோசனம், removing the three afflictions of captivity, சிறைநோய் மூன்றுந்தீர்த்தல். viz.: restraint from the calls of nature, மலசலவாதை; corporal punishments, சரீரதண்டனை; chains, fetters, விலங்கு போடல். 7. சவச்சேமம், burial, பிரேதமடக்கல். There are eight other kinds of benevolence. 1. பிறர்க்குப்பொருள்வரவையுவத்தல், rejoicing in a neighbor's wealth; 2. பிறர்செல்வம்பொறுத்தல், being content in seeing a neighbor's welfare; 3. பிறர்கருமத் திற்குடன்படுதல், assisting in other's business, with interest; 4. தீமைக்கஞ்சல், fearing to do evil; 5. பிறர்கருமமுடிக்கவிரைதல், hastening to assist others; 6. பிறரையந் தீர்த்தல், removing other's doubts; 7. நன் மைகடைப்படித்தல், preserving in doing good; 8. பிறர்துயர்க்கிரங்கல், commiserating the distress of others; sympathizing with the afflicted. 19) *

A sacred name, the name of a deity or holy person. 2. The Vaishnuva sectarian mark on the forehead. 3. A divine song. திருநாளைப்போவார், appel. n. One of the sixty-three devotees of Siva. திருநாள், s. A religious festival, a great or special day, a holy day. திருநீலகண்டன், s. A large kind of centiped, ஓர்பூரான். 2. One of the sixtythree devotees of Siva, சிவனடியாரிலொரு வன். 3. A very wicked man. திருநீறு, s. (also விபூதி.) Sacred ashes of burnt cowdung, one of the chief marks of the Saiva sect. திருநீறணிய--திருநீறிட--திருநீறுபூச, inf. To rub sacred ashes on the forehead, breast, &c. திருநீறுசுட--திருநீறுவிளைவிக்க, inf. To make sacred ashes. திருநீற்றுக்காப்பு, s. Sacred ashes rubbed on one's forehead by a great person as a charm or for benefit to the soul. 2. As திருநீறு. திருநீற்றுக்கோயில்--திருநீற்றுப்பை, s. A bag for sacred ashes. திருநீற்றுப்பச்சை--திருநீற்றுப்பத்திரி, s. A species of fragrant ever-green shrub used for perfuming the திருநீறு, also medicinal sweet Basil, உருத்திரசடைப்பூடு, Ocymun basilicum, L. திருநீற்றுப்பழம், s. Balls of sacred ashes. திருநீற்றுமடல், s. A metal stand in a temple with an urn like the sheaths of a pine flower, for sacred ashes. திருநெல்வேலி, s. A town south of Madura, Tinnevelly, ஓர்பட்டணம். திருநெற்றிமாலை, s. A garland for the forehead of an idol. திருநோக்கு, s. The gracious look of the deity, or a great person. 2. The official look of the guru in the administration of the தீட்சை. திருப்படைவீடு, s. Places sacred to Siva, Vishnu, &c., who are supposed to be present with their retinue at their respective shrines. திருப்பணி, s. Service in an idol temple, கோயிற்சேவகம். 2. Work on the temple as masonry, carpentry, &c., கோயில்வேலை. திருப்பணிமுட்டு, s. Materials, &c., for building a temple. திருப்பதி, s. Tripaty, a place sacred to Vishnu. (See வடமலை and திசை.) 2. Any one of the one-hundred and eight Vishnu shrines, விஷ்ணுஸ்தலம். திருப்பரங்குன்று, s. A hill west of Madura, one of the six places sacred to Subramanya, சுப்பிரமணியர்ஸ்தலம். திருப்பரம், s. Boiled rice, சோறு--a word used by brahmans only, குழூஉக்குறி. திருப்பள்ளி, s. A place of repose, especially of an image, சயனதலம். திருப்பள்ளிகொள்ள, inf. To rest, especially spoken of an idol. திருப்பள்ளித்தாமம், s. Garlands for the idol, கோயிற்பூமாலை. திருப்பள்ளியெழுச்சி, v. noun. The early rising of the god--a song daily sung to awaken the god, especially of a festival of ten days in December; also sung by the people on these days to rouse one another to their religious duties, ஓர்பிர பந்தம். திருப்பாடல், s. A hymn, a sacred song. திருப்பாட்டு, s. Hymns or songs in praise of a deity, commonly ancient. 2. [in irony.] A satire, lampoons. திருப்பாவாடை, s. A long cloth on which offerings of rice are presented to idols. திருப்புகழ், s. Songs, odes in praise of a god. திருப்பூட்டு, v. noun. Putting on the wedding badge, as the essential part of marriage, தாலிகட்டுகை. 2. The wedding badge, தாலி. திருமகள்--திருமாது, s. Lukshmi. திருமகண்மைந்தன், s. Kama; [ex மைந் தன், son.] திருமஞ்சனம், s. Daily bathing of the idol, for its purification. திருமஞ்சனமாட்டல், v. noun. Bathing an idol. திருமண், s. Sacred earth used by Vaishnuvas in marking their foreheads, as . திருமயிலை, s. A sacred place, ஓர்ஸ் தலம். திருமரம், s. The sacred fig tree, அரசு. திருமலர், s. The lotus, தாமரை. திருமலை, s. A name of the feigned mountain Kylasa, the chief residence of Siva; கயிலாயமலை. 2. tēvatattaṉ (p. 259) s. The younger brother of Bud'dha, புத்தன்றம்பி. 2. One of the ten vital airs, that which is exhaled in yawning, தசவாயுவிலொன்று. 3. The air necessary for removing weariness and producing perspirtion. (See வாய்வு.) --Note. In வேதாந்தசூடாமணி it is given as that which produces smiling and speaking. 21) *

To devote or offer boiled rice, &c., to the gods, manes, or idols, நிவேதிக்க. 4. To acquire, to secure, to possess, சம்பாதிக்க. 5. He has served him up; i. e. given him a beating. படைத்துக்கழித்தல்--படைத்துமாற்று தல், v. noun. Presenting offerings to the idol, and then removing them. படைத்தோன், appel. n. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. As சிருட்டிகர்த்தா. படைப்பு, v. noun. Greating, evolving, &c., as சிருட்டிப்பு, which see. 2. He obtained profit. இதுபடும்பிரயாசத்தைப்பெறாது. It is not worth the trouble. பத்துப்பணம்பெறும். It is worth ten fanams. அவன்பெறுமானவன். He is a worthy man. ஒருகாசும்பெறாதவேலை. It is worth nothing. பெற்றமனம்பித்துப்பிள்ளைமனங்கல்லு. The heart of the mother is bile [water]; the heart of the child is stone. பெறாத, neg. rel. part.
