ik (p. 45) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To leave behind, pass over, go beyond, கடக்க. 2. To transgress, violate, deviate from rule or justice, மீற. 3. v. n. To depart, go, pass, போக. (p.) வரம்பிகந்தன. Those that exceed limits, things that are boundless. மடநனியிகக்கும். Ignorance will in great measure be renounced. (நன்னூல்.) இகந்துபட, inf. To be confuted, to fail, தவறுபட. 2. utṟu (p. 60) கிறேன், உதறினேன், வேன், உதற, v. a. To shake off, throw off by shaking, to shake a thing, especially a cloth; to shake the feet, hands, &c.; to shake itself --as an animal; to shake the head--as a dog having something in its mouth, உதறிப் போட. 2. To shake or thrust off a person, animal or thing that adheres to one; to extricate one's self from another in wrestling by shaking, pushing, &c., விதிர்க்க. 3. To shake off a business, affairs, office, &c., தள்ளிவிட. 4. To snatch or wrest one's self from the grasp of another. (See திமிற.) 5. (fig.) To renounce friends and social life for the desert--as an ascetic, நீக்க. 6. To strike--as the hands, feet, &c. through pain, grief, fear, anger, &c., துக்கமுதலியவற் றாற்கைவிதிர்க்க. 7. v. n. To shake with ague, fever, palsy, &c., நடுங்க. உதறிக்கொண்டுபோகிறான். He is refractory. இனஞ்சனம்யாவையுமுதறிவிட்டுப்போனான். He has utterly renounced his relations and friends--as a devotee, or to form other connections. என்வார்த்தையையுதறிவிடாதே. Do not reject what I say. உதறிமுறிப்பான், s. The விஷ்ணு காந்தை plant, Spharanthus Indicus. உதறுகாலி, s. A cow that kicks, or twitches away its leg and will not be milked, உதறுகாற்பசு. 2. A woman that shakes her feet in walking, உதறுகாற் பெண்--such a woman is supposed to bring evil upon her children and household. உள்ளதையுங்கெடுத்தாளுதறுகாலிவந்து. When this woman who shakes her feet in walking joined the family she destroyed all its wealth. கையையுதற, inf. To shake the hands when under the influence of strong emotion, especially grief. 4) *

oruvu (p. 83) கிறேன், ஒருவினேன், வேன், ஒருவ, v. a. To leave, avoid, recede from, relinquish, abandon, renounce, நீக்க. 2. v. n. To be excepted, to fail, vary, தவிர. 3. To go or turn aside, விலக. (p.) ஒருவாதுதனிவருமாய்விடின். If invariably it occurs alone-இறைமகன்கோதொரீஇக்கொள்கைமுதுக்குறைவு. It is wise in a prince to receive the allegations of his subjects, rejecting, nevertheless all that is false. ஒரூஉமோனை, s. One of the fortythree kinds of rhyme. See தொடை. ஒருவு, v. noun. Leaving, receding, avoiding, separation, renunciation, நீங் குகை. 21)

ōy (p. 84) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ஓய, v. a. To cease, leave off, to desist from action, &c., to rest, விட. 2. v. n. To become tired, become weary, to fail, become weak or infirm--as a member of the body, தளர. 3. To cease, end, முடிய. ஓயாமலிருக்க, inf. To be incessant, continual. ஓயாமல்வருகிறான். He comes incessantly. மரங்காய்த்தோய்தல், v. noun. Ceasing to bear fruit for the season. ஆய்ந்தோய்ந்துபார்த்தல், v. noun. Considering maturely, deliberating. எல்லாமோய்ந்தகணக்காய்ப்போயிற்று. His wealth, influence, &c. are all reduced. கையோயாமல்வேலைசெய்கிறான். He labors incessantly. எழுதியெழுதிக்கையோய்ந்துபோயிற்று. My arm is weary with continual writing. ஆடியோய்ந்தபம்பரம். A top that has ceased to spin; i. e. an ascetic, so called because he has renounced worldly cares, and is henceforth exempt from transmigrations. 2. An old man whose active days are past. 3. A person dismissed from office. காலோய்ந்துகையோய்ந்துபோகுதல். Feeling weak in the legs and arms--as after fever, &c. ஓயாக்கவலை, s. Incessant troubles, anxiety. ஓயாமாரி, s. Incessant rain, ஓயா மழை. 2. Unceasing liberality, பெருங் கொடை. ஓய்ந்தமனம், s. A mind that has ceased to be affected by secular objects. ஓய்ந்துபோக, inf. To become weary. அடித்தோய, inf. To desist from beating. ஓயல்--ஓய்வு, v. noun. Cessation, ceasing, relinquishment, rest, ஒழிவு. 2. Slackness, தளர்வு. 3. End, termination, முடிவு. ஓய்வுகரையில்லாமற்கொடுக்கிறான். He bestows without limit or cessation. ஓய்வுநாள், s. A day of rest; [in Christ. usage.] the sabbath. 107)

kṭi (p. 87) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To rebuke, reprove, chide, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 2. (p.) To reject, renounce, avoid, dispel, நீக்க. 3. To restrain, subject--as the senses, ஒடு க்க. 4. kuṇṭi (p. 118) s. The buttocks, backside, fundament, seat, rump of an animal; any rump-like protuberance, ஆசனபக்கம். 2. The kidney, பிருக்கம். 3. The heart, இருதயம். 4. The roe or spawn of a fish, மீன்சினை. 5. The lower end of fruits, nuts, &c.; that opposite the stalk, பழத்தின்கீழ்ப்புறம். குண்டிகழுவ, inf. To wash after passing excrements. குண்டிகழுவாதவர்கள், s. Those who do not wash themselves; a term of reproach given to Europeans--the practice being regarded as filthy. குண்டிக்காய், s. Kidneys, பிருக்கம். குண்டிக்குப்பின்னேபேச, inf. To backbite, to speak ill of one behind his back; low, and in anger. குண்டிக்கொழுப்பு, s. Pride, wantonness, arrogance, sauciness, insolence. குண்்டிச்சீலையைப்போட்டுக்கடக்க, inf. [prov.] To take an oath by stepping over the cloth taken from the waist; as practised by the lower castes. குண்டிமண்ணைத்தட்டிவிட்டோட, inf. [prov.] To leave, renounce or desert a person, thing, &c.; lit. to wipe off the dust of the buttocks and run away, விட் டுவிட. 2. To outwit, to out-scheme, to out-do another in cheating, &c., தந்திரத் திலேவெல்ல. குண்டியடிபடவிழ, inf. To fall on the buttocks from a height. குண்டியும்வாயும்பொத்த, inf. To stand in great awe of a person; to be much afraid; lit. to stop the mouth by one hand and put the other behind to save a kick, &c. குண்டியெலும்பு, s. The os sacrum, ஆச னவென்பு. குண்டிவற்ற, s. inf. [prov.] To be reduced as the mettle, arrogance; lit. the buttocks to be dry, பெருமையடங்க.

To make a pretence of giving; to give a little only. 5. To make signs with the back of the hand for one to go. கை. 8. The ear, or organ of hearing, காது. 9. The hearing or trial of a case, வழக்குக்கேட்கை. 1. Report, rumor, பேச்சு. 11. Tradition, பாரம்பரியம். கேள்வியற்றுக்கிடக்கிறது. There is no administration of justice; no justice or satisfaction can be obtained. கேள்விமுயல். Be prompt in receiving information. கேள்விகொடுக்க, inf. To give ear, to listen--not elegant. கேள்விமறுமொழி, s. Question and answer; a catechism. கேள்விக்கடுதாசி, s. [prov.] Written application to a court of justice. 2. Tenders or proposals in writing. கேள்விக்காரர், s. [prov.] Bidders at an auction. 2. Persons who tender proposals at a purchase. 3. Candidates or applicants for an office. கேள்விச்செவி, s. Listening credulously to hear-say reports. கேள்விச்செவியன் ஊரைக்கெடுத்தான். The credulous ruler ruined the country. கேள்விப்பத்திரம், s. [prov.] A request, application, petition, &c., in writing. கேள்விகேட்பாடு, s. [local.] Judicial inquiry, investigation. கேள்வியற்றஊர்--கேள்வியில்லாதஊர், s. A town without justice. கேள்விமுறை, s. Inquiry into; superintendence, control, management. கேள்வியாக, inf. To be heard, to be reported; to reach the ears--as news; to be heard in court. கை கைகாட்டு, v. noun. Gesture with the hand, as in dancing; beck of the hand. கைகுவிக்க, inf. To hold up the hands joined, in worship, &c. See குவி. கைகுறண்ட, inf. To have the hands bent by spasms. 2. To be cramped in the hands. 3. To be stingy, parsimonious, close-fisted. கைகூச, inf. To be backward in using the hand. See கூசு. கைகூட, inf. To come to hand, be obtained, to succeed, அனுகூலப்பட. அவன்செய்வதெல்லாம் அவனுக்குக் கைகூடும். All that he does prospers. கைகூப்பு, v. noun. Raising the joined hands in worship--as கூப்பு. 2. The distance from the tip of the fingers to the feet, when the hands are joined and raised above the head. கைகொட்ட, inf. To clap the hands. கைகோக்க, inf. To clasp one another's hands, to join hands. 2. To be arm in arm, to take another's arm. கைகோத்தாட, inf. To dance with arms linked. கைகோள், s. A course of conduct, especially in love affairs. (அகப்பொ.) கேள்வி, v. noun. The grand subjects of information under four heads; 1. அ றம், virtue or a virtuous course of action; all knowledge relating to the nature or practice of virtue, or having virtue as its object, including religion, jurisprudence, ethies and every thing connected with the well-being of society, and the promotion of universal benevolence towards all sentient beings. This is subdivided into, 1. இல்லறம், the duties and usages of man--as a member of society. 2. துறவறம், the duties and practices of the recluse, who renounces social life and retires to the desert. 2. பொருள், wealth, property, substance; truth; all kinds of knowledge relating to the nature, acquisition and uses of learning and wealth--including. 1. கல்விப்பொருள், general knowledge, and science. 2. செல் வப்பொருள், property, trade, commerce and the various occupations for gain or the support of life. 3. இன்பம், delight, gratification, knowledge of the nature and means of pleasure and bliss--especially love and matrimony. 4. வீடு, liberation from births, knowledge relating to final emancipation or eternal felicity. --Note. Another classification makes five parts, the fifth embracing the practice of the rules laid down for the attainment of the benefits implied in the four. 72)

caṉṉiyācam (p. 174) s. Asceticism, abandonment of all worldly possessions and attachments, being the highest and last of the four brahmanical states. See ஆச் சிரமம். 2. Relinquishment, renunciation, துறவு; [ex சம், entirely, et நியாசம், casting away.] W. p. 891. SANNYASA. சன்னியாசந்தரிக்க, inf. To assume the state and garb of the சன்னியாசி. சன்னியாசமார்க்கம், s. The order of சன்னியாசி. 2. The perpetual bachelorhood of a person of good morals. சன்னியாசமுத்திரை, s. The distinctive marks of the சன்னியாசி, viz.: the staff, the waterpot, an unshaven beard, dishevelied locks, ochred clothes, &c. *சா, A compound letter composed of ச் and ஆ. 2. s. [ex Sa. Jya, to decay.] Death, mortality, மரணம். 3. Devil, பேய். 4. [in astron.] The chord of an arc; but commonly used for அர்த்தச்சா--the sine of an arc. 5. An equation of the centre--as மந்தச்சா. 6. The annual parallax, of a planet. See கற்கிச்சா and மகரச்சா. W. p. 355. JYA. சாக்காடு, s. Mortality, death, மரணம்; [ex காடு, a verbal affix.] சாக்காட்ட--சாக்காக்க, inf. [prov.] To wait on the dying, affording aid, performing appropriate ceremonies, &c. சாக்குருவி--சாகுருவி, s. A night-bird, sometimes a screech owl, whose hoot is supposed to portend death. சாக்குறி, s. Omens or presages of death. சாச்சடங்கு, s. Funeral ceremonies performed within the first week, especially, cooking and taking congy on the third day, and rice on the eighth.--Note. In some places food is sent by the relatives for three days. சாசங்காரம், s. The completing of an equation. சாபலம், s. [in astron.] Equation to the centre for any given time. சாபறை--சாப்பறை, s. A kind of drum for funerals. சாபிள்ளை, s. A still-born child. (c.) சாமுகுர்த்தம், s. [in astrol.] The முகு ர்த்தம் time, when several of the planets are in unfavorable situations. சாமூஞ்சி, s. A dismal, ghastly countenance, a death-like look. சாமூஞ்சிபட, inf. To be ghastly, as the face of a sick person. சாமேளம், s. A funeral-drum; the mode of beating a drum for a funeral. சாவறுதி, s. The point of death, the last extremity. 2. [prov.] Slightness, want of force and vigour; [ex அறுதி.] சன்னியாசம்பண்ண, inf. To renounce social or secular life for the wandering life of the ascetic. 2. To abandon earthly associations, worldliness, secularity, &c. சமுசாரசன்னியாசம், s. Celibacy. See under சமுசாரம். 3) *

caṉṉiyāci (p. 174) s. A Hindu ascetic, a wandering devotee who has renounced social life, with all its enjoyments and attachments, subjected his passions, and lives on what is given him unasked. He remains in a village only one day, in a town not more than three days, and in a city only five; lest his mind become secularized. See ஆச்சிரமம். 2. [among R. Catho.] A monk; [ex சன்னியாசம்.]--Note. There are two orders of சன்னியாசி, namely. 1. ஏகதண்டசன்னியாசி, one who carries a single staff, and is of the Smriti sect; 2. திரிதண்ட சன்னியாசி, one who carries three staves tied together, and is a worshipper of Vishnu. சா சாவாக்கியம், s. A Table of equations. சாவிசேஷம், s. Tidings of death. சாவிளைவு, s. A good crop as a prognostic to one's death; spoken after the occurrence. சாவீடு, s. A funeral-house. சாவெடி, s. [prov. சாவெடில்.] The smell of a dead body, பிணநாற்றம். சாவெழுத்து, s. Fatal letters; a class of letters, which it is supposed may be so placed in an invocation, as to effect the death of a person to whom the verse is addressed--intentionally or unintentionally. See எழுத்துத்தானம். சாவோலை, s. An ola-letter burnt at the end, for a funeral mark, giving notice of death. உற்கிரமச்சா, s. The versed sine. See also கிராமச்சா--மூலச்சா, the sine; and கோடி ச்சா, the cosine. 4) *

cār (p. 179) --சாரு, கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், சார, v. n. To lean upon, to recline against, சாய. 2. To rest on or in, to repose on, to depend on, to adhere to, பற்றிக்கொள்ள. 3. To apply to, to resort to, to take shelter or refuge with, அடைய. 4. To approach, to approximate, to incline towards, அணுக. 5. To gain access to, to reach, to arrive at, கிட்ட. 6. To side with, to join a party ஓர்பாற்சார. 7. To be attached to, connected with, &c., அனுசாரமாக. 8. To be biassed or warped in judgment, to be partial to, நடுநிலைகோண. (c.) 9. To be adjacent, contiguous, to join, அடுக்க. 1. To come on-as events, disease, &c., சுகதுக்கங்கள்சார. 11. To tend or incline towards--as in color, smell, taste, temper, quality, &c., பொ ருந்த.--Note. The verb sometimes conveys a transitive sense. அழகுசார்ந்தபூ. The beautiful flower. (p.) நான்போய்ச்சார்ந்தவிடம். The party with which I am connected by affinity or marriage. (c.) சாரோலை--சார்வோலை, s. [prov.] A party grown palm leaf next after that last put out, முதிர்ந்தகுருத்தோலை. (R.) சார்ந்தார்--சார்ந்தோர், s. Relatives, சுற்றத்தார். 2. Friends, associates, சினேகர். தீயாரைச்சார்ந்தார்தீயராவார். Those who join with the wicked will become wicked. ஒருவரைச்சார்ந்துபிழைக்க, inf. To live by the aid of another. (c.) சார்ந்துகொள்ள, inf. To lean or recline on. 2. To have recourse to. சார்மணை, s. [loc.] Any thing to lean on or recline against--as cushions, pillows, &c.; [ex மணை.] சார்மானம், s. A thing or person to lean upon, as சாய்மானம். சார்பு, v. noun. and s. Place, இடம். 2. Help, support, patronage, protection, favor, உதவி. 3. Dependence, reliance, பற்று. 4. Place of refuge, asylum, shelter, defence, அடைக்கலம். 5. Favoritism, partiality, தயவு. 6. Bias, prejudice, வார பட்சம். 7. Approximation, கிட்டுகை. 8. One who acts on his own responsibility. தன்மூப்புச்செலுத்த--தன்மூப்புப்பண் ண, inf. To act on one's own responsibility. தன்மேம்பாடு, v. noun. To humble or to abase one's self. தன்னைப்புகழ்தல், v. noun. Praising one's self. தன்னைப்புகழ்தலுந்தகும்புலவோர்க்கே. It becomes a poet to praise himself. தன்னையறிதல், v. noun. A girl becoming marriageable, பருவம்வாய்புறல். 2. Knowing one's self; i. e. knowing the power of the soul--as the ascetic, ஆ ன்மநிலையையுணர்தல். தன்னையறியாதசன்னதமில்லை. There is no want of self-possession; spoken of one supposed to be possessed by an evil spirit, yet retaining his conning. தன்னையறிந்தவன்தலைவனைஅறிவான். He who knows himself will know God. தன்னைமறந்தவன், appel. n. A selfrenouncing person, as an ascetic or a ஞானி. தன்னைமறுத்தல், v. noun. Self-denial. தன்னைவாட்டுதல்--தன்னையொறுத்தல், v. noun.
