karuṭaṉ (p. 96) s. The Brahmany kite, கலுழன். 2. The bird and vehicle of Vishnu. He is generally represented as a being something between a man and a bird, and considered to be sovereign of the feathered race; he is the son of Kasyapa and Vinata and the younger brother of Aruns, விட்டு ணுவாகனம், Falco pondischerianus. Wils. p. 283. GARUDA. கருடகம்பம், s. A species of lamp used by one of the Vaishnava sects at religious festivals. கருடகேதனன்-கருடக்கொடியோ ன்--கருடத்துவசன், s. Vishnu, விட்டுணு, whose flag is the kite. Wils. p. 283. GARUDATHVAJA. கருடக்கல்--கருடப்பச்சைக்கல்-கருடபட்சிக்கல் s. A kind of medicinal stone or mineral taken for the bite of a snake or put on the wound with the repetition of incantations, ஓர்கல். கருடக்கொடி, s. A flag in which the picture of a kite is drawn, கருடத்துவ சம். 2. A plant called பெருமருந்து, Aristolochia Indica. 3. Another plant called குறிஞ்சா, Gymnema sylvestra. கருடக்கொவ்வை--கருடத்தொண் டை, s. A climbing plant, ஓர்கொடி Clitoria, L. கருடசாரம், s. Sea salt, சிந்துல வணம். கருடதரிசனம், s. The worship of the kite as the representative of Vishnu on special days; the sight of the bird at such seasons is deemed very auspicious, கருடனைத்தரிசிக்கை. கருடதிசை, s. East, கீழ்த்திசை-used in astrology. கருடத்தியானம், s. Devotion addressed by the enchanter to the god Garuda in case of venomous bites, கருட னைத்தியானிக்கை. கருடபஞ்சாக்கரம், s. An incantation of five letters sacred to Garuda. கருடபாடாணம்--கருடபாஷாண ம், s. A species of arsenic. கருடபார்வை, s. A squint eye, மாறுபார்வை. 2. [prov.] An expressive, penetrating look. கருடவாகனன், s. A Vishnu regarded mounted on Garuda. கருடவித்தை, s. Incantations, &c., connected with Garuda. கருடற்கண்ணன், s. [as புதன்.] The elder brother of கருடன் and son of சந்திரன். (சது.) கருடன்கிழங்கு, s. A kind of root. கருடன்தாய், s. The same as விநதை. கருடாஞ்சனம், s. Eye-salve for a person bitten by a snake, or for cases of apoplexy, விஷந்தீர்க்கக்கண்ணிலிடுமருந்து. ஆகாசகருடன், s. kirupai (p. 111) s. Grace, beneficence, benignity, mercy, kindness, compassion, benevolence, கருணை. Wils. p. 244. KRUPA. என்மீதில்கிருபையாயிருக்கிறார்--என்னைக்கிருபையா கப்பார்க்கிறார். He is gracious towards me. கிருபாகடாட்சம், s. Benign or gracious looks; compassion, benevolence, கருணை. கிருபாகரன், s. A man of universal benevolence; one who is the seat of mercy or grace, கிருபைக்கிருப்பிடமானோன். கிருபாசமுத்திரம், s. One who is a sea of grace, கிருபைக்கடல். கிருபாசனம், s. Mercy-seat; God--as the centre and seat of mercy and grace. கிருபாநோக்கம், s. A gracious look--as that of the guru on his disciple in his official capacity, as a representative of the deity himself in human form, assumed for the purpose of dispelling the disciple's mental darkness, &c., கருணைநோக்கம். கிருபாமகத்துவம், s. The greatness of mercy. கிருபாமூர்த்தி, s. He whose very shape is mercy, கிருபாசொரூபி. 2. The merciful God, கடவுள். 3. The god who has assumed a shape calculated for the exercise of mercy, கிருபையாலவதரித்தோன். கிருபாலு--கிருபாளு s. A kind, compassionate, gracious person, கிருபையுடை யவன். Wils. p. 244. The cloth with which the sacrificial pot is adorned. கும்பஸ்தாபனம், s. Setting up sacred pots for worship, religious ceremonies, &c. கும்பதக்கணை-கும்பதட்சிணை, s. Money for the sacrificial pot as an offering to the gods, and taken by the officiating priest. கும்பாபிஷேகம், s. The consecration of an idol, a king, &c., by pouring water from the sacrificial pots with appropriate ceremonies, &c., கும்பநீரபிஷேகம். கும்பமெடுக்க, inf. To carry in procession the sacred pot with appropriate ceremonies. கும்பம்நிறுத்த--கும்பம்வைக்க--கும்பம் ஸ்்தாபிக்க, inf. To set up a sacrificial pot for worship. கும்பம்போட--கும்பங்்கொட்ட, inf. tāṉam (p. 236) s. (Sa. Da'na.) Gift in charity, donation, grant, contribution--commonly with a religious motive, as a work of merit; meritorious alms being bestowed on special occasions, as at the birth of a child, at a funeral, at the last moment of life, &c., கொடை. 2. Liberality, munificence, bounty, ஈகை. 3. Benefit, succor, உதவி. 4. The rut of the elephant, யானைமதம். 5. (Sa. Ta'na.) A tune, இராகம். --Note. தானம், for the souls of deceased ancestors is made to some of the பிதிர் class of gods, regarded as representatives of those progenitors; பிதிர் gifts are called தியாகம். தானம், 3. Three kinds of gifts. 1. தலைப்படுதானம், this is to give what one has honestly acquired to such as are free from the three great vices, lust, anger and scepticism, and who addict themselves with cheerful submission to a virtuous life; and when giving, praying that the gift may be received, அறத்தா லீட்டியபொருளைமுக்குற்றமற்ற நற்றவத்தோரைக்கொ ள்கெனப்பணிந்து, குறையிரந்து, தம்முள்ளமுவந்தீ தல். 2. இடைப்படுதானம், bestowing through pity, &c. (See இடை.) 3. கடைப்படுதானம், the last and lowest kind of charity, is, bestowing alms from love of popularity or praise, the fear of losing favor, or mere kindness of disposition, சுயநலத்தைப் பற்றியீவது. தானம், 1. Ten kinds of gifts. See தசதானம். பசுவையடித்துப்புலிக்குத்தானங்கொடுக்கிறதா.... Would one kill a cow and make a present of it to a tiger? நீற்றுப்பூசணிக்காய்த்தானம், s. The gift of an ash-colored pumpkin, instead of the life of a sick person required by the configuration of the planets; also called, மிருத்துதானம், கூஷ்மாண்டதானம், and கூஷ்மாண்டம். This kind of pumpkin is never cut, it being supposed to possess life; when used for food, it is always broken. தானங்கொடுக்க, inf. To give alms. 2. To make donation, contributions, presents, &c. 3. To make donations to a guru or brahman in the last extremity. See தாசதானம். தானங்கொடுத்தபசு, s. A cow given to a brahman or to a temple, just before death. தானசீலன், s. A liberal, charitable man. தானதருமம்--தானதன்மம், s. Alms and presents. தானபத்திரம்--தானபத்திரிகை, s. A deed of gift. தானாதிகருமங்கள், s. Bestowing alms, and performing other religious rites and duties. 12) *

tirumāl (p. 240) s. Vishnu, as lord of illusion, in the universe, விட்டுணு; [ex மால், illusion.] திருமாலவதாரம், 1. Ten incarnations of Vishnu. 1. Matsya, மச்சம், a fish assumed to kill சோமுகன், an Asura who had stolen the Vedas and hidden them in the sea. 2. Kurma, கூர்மம். tortoise, assumed to support Mount Mandara, used as a churning stick in churning the sea of milk to obtain Amrita, or nectar. 3. Varáha, வராகம், a boar, assumed to open and spread out the earth which இரணியாக்கன் had rolled up, as a scroll, and sunk in the ocean; and to kill him. 4. Narasingha, நரசிங்கம், manlion, assumed to destroy இரணியகசிபன், the younger brother of இரணியாக்கன், who, to avenge the death of his brother, had abolished the worship of Vishnu.--Note. These four were assumed without parents. 5. Váhmana, வாமனம், the dwarf born of காசிபன் and அதிதி to overcome மாபலி by deceit, coming to him as a beggar. 6. Parasurama, பரசுராமன், or the axe bearing Rama, born of சமதக்கினி and இரேணுகை to kill the Kshtriyas who oppressed the brahmans. 7. Ramachandra, இராமன், king of Ayodhya, born of தசரதன் and கோசலை, to kill Ravana, king of Lanka, and other Rakshasas. 8. Balab'hadra, பலபத் திரன், half brother of krishna; his father's name was வசுதேவன், and he had two mothers, தேவகி and உரோகணி. He come to destroy பிரலம்பன் and his Rakshasas. 9. Krishna, கண்ணன், son of வசு தேவன் and தேவகி, came to excite the wars of the Bharata, and to relieve the earth of its over-burdened population. 1. The horse, கற்கி, yet future, and for the purpose of destroying the universe.--Note. The poet Jayadeva places Krishna as the eighth and makes the ninth, Buddha. Another class of fifteen incarnations of Vishnu is given. 1. சனகன், Sanaka. 2. சனந்தனன், Sanandana. 3. சனாதன், Sanáta. 4. சனற்குமாரன், Sanatkumara. Rishis regarded as representatives of Brahma and celebrated in the Bagavata. 5. நரநாராயணன், Naranarayana, a great personage mentioned in the Maha B'harata. 6. கபிலன், Capila, founder of the Sank'hya philosophy. 7. இடபன், Vrishab'ha-Yogi, the first of the twenty-four Jaina saints. 8. நாரதன், Nárada,, inventor of the lute, messenger of the gods, and first of the ten principal Munis. 9. அயக்கிரீவன் ((lit.) the horse-headed), Hayagriva, of the Maha Bharata, to be distinguished from the Asura of the same name. 1. தத்தாத்திரேயன், Dattatreya, mentioned in Bagavata. 11. மோகினி, Mohini, a fascinating female. (See மோ கினி.) 12. யாகபதி, Yágapati, the lord of sacrifices, always receiving the first of the offerings. 13. வியாதன், Vyasa, son of Parásara, arranger of the Vedas. 14. தன்வந்தரி, D'hanvantari, a physician of the gods. (See தன்வந்தரி.) 15. பௌத் தன், Budha, the head of the Buddhist system; by some considered the ninth principal Avatar. திருமாலாயுதம், 5, s. The five weapons of Vishnu. 1. சங்கம் or பாஞ்சசன்னியம், chank; 2. சக்கரம் or சுதரிசனம், a wheellike missile; 3. தனுசு or சாரங்கம், bow. 4. வாள் or நாந்தகம், sword; 5. தண்டு or கௌமோதகி, club.--Note. These are pictured on a metal plate, and worn on the neck as an ornament, or amulet, by children, which is called பஞ்சாயுதம். திருமாலுந்தி, s. Saints or great one's feet, குருபாதம். திருவடிதீட்சை, s. The guru's placing his feet on the head of the disciple, as one of the modes of dispelling his sin. திருவடிப்பாதுகை, s. The word, declaration or order of a deity, saint, guru, king or other great person; an oracle. திருவாக்குக்கெதிர்வாக்குண்டோ.... Is the word of a high personage to be controverted? திருவாசகம், s. A poem by மாணிக்க வாசகர். திருவாசல்--திருவாயில், s. The gates or door-ways of a temple, including all the openings between the worshipper and the idol, ஆலயவாயில். 2. Great confidence, in one whose good will has been experienced, மிகநம்பிக்கை. பிரதிபந்தகம்--பிரதிபந்தம், s. Obstacle, impediment, தடை. பிரதிபாதிக்க, inf. To determine, to define, to conclude.
