Interim, opportunity, con venient season, season, சமயம். 1. The full moon, பௌரணை. 11. A measure of length, breadth, thickness, &c., நீட்டலளவையிலொ ன்று. 12. One of the three நாடி, or passages for the breath--that through the left nostril, the lunar nerve or vessel, திரிநாடி யிலொன்று. 13. One of the (நாடி) nerves or arteries, தசநாடியிலொன்று. (See நாடி.) 14. (misused for எடை) Weight, gravity நிறை. (See சுழிமுனை, and பிங்கலை.) நல்லாரிடைப்புக்கு. Associating with the good. இடைகலை, s. The breath of the left nostril--as சந்திரகலை. See பிங்கலை. இடைக்கட்டு, s. A girdle, sash. 2. The allowance made for the weight of a vessel before weighing any thing in it. இடைக்காடன், s. A Rishi or சித்தன்--one of the eighteen. இடைக்கிடை. Here and there, interspersed, நடுநடுவே. 2. Of like weight, even weight, equilibrium, நிறைக்குநிறை இடைக்குலநாதன், s. Vishnu as brought up by shepherds. இடைக்குறை, s. [in grammar.] A word shortened in the middle, syncope, elision; as ஓதி for ஓந்தி, camelion. (See விகாரம்.) 2. An island, blank space in a river, &c., ஆற்றிடைக்குறை. இடைக்கொள்ளை, s. Pillaging, plunder, free booty, plundering without regard to either party, நடுக்கொள்ளை. 2. (in Agastiar.) The ravages of an epidemic discase, கொள்ளைநோயான்வருமழிவு. இடைசுருங்குபறை, s. A small drum tapering in the middle, உடுக்கை. இடைசூரி, s. [prov.] Gold or silverbeads interspersed here and there between sacred or other beads, உருத்திராக்க முதலியவற்றிற்கிடையிற்கோத்திடுவது. இடைச்சனி--இடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The eleventh lunar asterism, in which Saturn is considered very malignant. See கடையெழுஞ்சனி and முதலெழுஞ் சனி. இடைச்சன், s. The second child, இரண்டாம்பேறு. (c.) இடைச்சாதி, s. The second or middle tribe of வைசியர்--the third caste. இடைச்சேரி, s. A shepherd's village. இடைத்தட்டு, s. Getting profit indirectly by interposing between parties, &c. or by purchasing goods of one and selling them again from a distance. இடைநடு, s. The middle emphatically (a pleonasm in rhetoric.) இடைநரை, s. Hair or beard growing grey here and there. இடைநிலை, s. In verbs generally, the characteristics of tense, வினையிடைநிலை. 2. A neutral state, neutral or middle state, stagnation in business transactions, இருபுறத்திலுஞ்சாராமனிற்கை. 3. In some compound nouns, one of the component parts, பெயரிடைநிலை. இடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. One of the beauties of poetry, விளக்கணிமூன்றிலொன்று. See தீபகம். இடைநிலைமயக்கு, s. [in orthography.] The proper combination of letters in the middle of a word, மொழியி லிரண்டெழுத்து மயங்கிநிற்கை--if the same consonant be repeated in the middle of a word, it is called, உடனிலைமெய்மயக்கு; if otherwise, it is called, வேற்றுநிலைமெய்ம யக்கு. இடைநீரினிற்க, inf. [prov.] To swim with the body erect and the water only up to the waist. இடைப்பட, inf. To interpose, happen in the interim, come in, between, among, &c., to happen, இடையிலுண்டாக. இடைப்படுதானம், s. Giving of a secondary order, bestowing through pity on the poor, the blind, மத்திமதானம். இடைப்பழம், s. Ripe fruits interspersed among the unripe. இடைப்பழம்பழுத்தல், v. noun. Ripening as fruits here and there. இடைப்பிறவரல், v. noun. Words intervening between any one word and another with which it makes sense--as between the noun and its attribute, &c., எழுவாய்முதலிய தொடரினுள் இடையிலேற்ற பிற சொல்வரல். இடைப்புழுதி, s. Land in a state for sowing, neither very moist nor very dry, காய்ந்துங்காயாதிருக்கிறபுழுதி. இடைப்புள்ளி, s. Marks scattered here and there--as in tobacco leaves, &c., fruits, &c. இடைப்பூட்டு, s. A truss, girdle, அரைப்பூட்டு. இடைப்போகம், s. An interior crop, out of season, இடையிற்புன்பயிர்விளைவு. இடைமடக்கு, s. Silencing one by vociferation, இடையிற்றடுக்கை. 2. Haughty speaking, இடக்குமடக்கானபேச்சு. 3. [in prosody.] The repetition of a word in the middle of a line with a varied meaning. See மடக்கு. இடைமுள், s. Small, new eruptions about a healing ulcer or bile, மறு முள்பாய்கை. 2. A disease, a kind of eruption, ஓர்கரப்பன். இடைமேடு, s. Rice-land of moderate height, நடுத்தரமானமேடு. இடையற, inf. To cease or terminate suddenly. இடையறாவன்பு, s. Never-ceasing love. இடையன், s. (fem. இடைச்சி.) A shepherd--as occupying a middle position. இடைப்புத்திபிடரியிலே. The shepherds have their wit in their nape; i. e. they have none. இடையன்கால்வெள்ளி, s. [prov.] The star Aldabaran in the constellation Aries, ஓர்விண்மீன். இடையாந்தரம், s. An intermediate space or time. அந்தவேலை யிடையாந்தரத்திலே கெட்டுப்போ யிற்று. The business was interrupted, spoiled in the interim. இடையாயர், s. Persons of a middling class in piety, excellence, &c. See தலை and கடை. இடையிட, inf. To intervene, be interspersed, to have intermediate spaces either of time or place, to intermit, happen intermediately, நடுவிற்றோன்ற. இடையிட்டுவந்தசெல்வம், s. Acquired wealth and prosperity, obtained during life, not derived from ancestors. இடையிட்டெதுகை, s. The எது கை or rhyming of the third letter in every other line. இடையிடை. From time to time, at intervals, intervening space. இடையிலேகொண்டுபோக, inf. To take by theft or force, to plunder fruits, furniture, &c. 2. To take off property at one's death--as persons who are not heirs. 3. To seize and carry off property from one who has stolen it--as a constable from a thief. (c.) இடையிலேவயிறுவளர்க்க, inf. To get a living at the expense of others, not reducing one's own stock. (c.) இடையினவெதுகை, s. One of the இனவெதுகை--that in which the second letter of each line is any of the medial letters. இடையீடு, s. Obstacle, impediment, frustration, விக்கினம். 2. Equivalent, equilibrium, ஈடு. இடையூறு, s. Frustration, interruption, disappointment, obstruction, hinderance, mishap, casualty, contingence, misfortune, disaster, இடர். (c.) இடையெண், s. A poem increasing and decreasing like the waves of the sea, அம்போதரங்கத்தொன்று. இடையொடுகடைமடக்கு, s. A figure in Rhetoric, repetition of a word or phrase in the middle and end of a line with different meanings, மடக்கணியி லொன்று. இடைவழக்கு, s. [prov.] A suit at law instituted by a new claimant while the previous one is going forward, கிளை வழக்கு. இடைவழக்காளி, s. An intervening party in a law-suit. இடைவழி, s. Midway. இடைவள்ளல், s. A term common to the second of the three classes of kings famed for liberality. (p.) இடைவாய், s. The degrees marked upon a steel-yard. இடைவிட, inf. To intermit, suspend, interrupt, leave intermissions, interstices, &c. இடைவிட்டுவிட்டு. Every other one. இடைவிடாமழை, s. Incessant rain. இடைவிடாமல், neg. v. part. Incessantly, constantly, without intermission. இடைவெட்டுப்பணம், s. A clipped or imperfectly stamped coin, மாறுமத் திரைவிழுந்தபணம். 2. [prov.] Profit made indirectly, பொறுக்கியெடுத்தபணம். இடைவெட்டுப்பேச்சு, s. Derision, ridicule. இடைவெளி, s. An intervening space, நடுவெளி. எட்கிடை--எள்ளிடை, s. The thickness of a rape-seed. iḷi (p. 56) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To grin, show the teeth--as in cringing, craving, &c., பல்லிளிக்க. 2. To laugh in a silly manner, to simper, giggle, களகளவெனச்சிரிக்க. 3. v. a. To ridicule, scorn, deride, பரிகாசஞ்செய்ய. 4. To disgrace, contemn, அவமதிக்க. (c.) இளித்தவாய்ப்பட்டம், s. Notoriety for grinning, இளிச்சவாயனெனப்படுகை. 2. The character of a sauntering idler. 3. The state or character of one baffled or defeated in his projects. குரங்குபோலிளித்தவாயன். One who grins like a monkey. பல்லையிளிக்க, inf. To laugh foolishly. இளிச்சற்கண், s. Blear eyes, eyes sore with rheum. இளிப்பு--இளிவு, v. noun. Grinning, simpering, tittering, பல்லிளிக்கை. 2. Ridicule, scorn, derision, இழிவு. 3. Disgrace, நிந்தை. நாயையடித்துப்பல்லிளிவுபார்க்கிறதினாலேயென் ன? What will it avail to strike a dog and then look at its grin? [prov.] எள்ளினிளிவாமென்றெண்ணி. eḷ (p. 75) --எள்ளு, கிறேன், எள்ளினேன், வேன், எள்ள, v. a. To scoff, abuse, contemn, disregard, hold in contempt, despise, நிந் திக்க. 2. To speak contemptuously or disdainfully of any one, இழிவாகப்பேச. 3. To ridicule, deride, laugh at, நகைக்க. 4. (fig.) To reject, தள்ள. எள்ளரிதாகியவில்லினை. The blameless wife. அவனிவனென்றுரைத்தெள்ளி. kṉai (p. 102) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. (generally used with the impers. terminations.) To sound, roar--as the sea, a drum, &c., ஒலிக்க. 2. To neigh--as horses; to whinny, bray--as asses; to bellow--as buffaloes; to bleat--as he-goats in rut, குதி ரைமுதலியகனைக்க. 3. To make a mock laugh, to hem at one in contempt, or ridicule, கொக்கரிக்க. 4. To sound the fourth letter in each class of Sanscrit letters, கனைத்தொலிக்க. கனைக்குதல்--கனைத்தல், v. noun. kuntāṇi (p. 121) s. [prov.] A large mortar, பெருவுரல். 2. A kind of disease in the eye --as குந்தம். அவள்ஒருகுந்தாணிபோலிருக்கிறாள். She is like a mortar--said in ridicule of a short, fat woman. குந்தாணிப்பீரங்கி, s. A kind of mortar for throwing bombs, &c., ஓர்பீரங்கி. 20)

kulam (p. 127) s. [in poet. குலன்.] Tribe, family, lineage, race; caste, nation, people, சாதி. 2. Herd, flock, shoal, assemblage, collection, கூட்டம். 3. Kind, class, species, sort, genus, இனம். 4. House, abode, மனை. 5. Royal palace, அரமனை. Wils. p. 233. KULA. 6. Family, rank, respectability or eminence of descent, உயர்குலம். 7. (Rott.) An inhabited country, குடி. 8. (பிங்.) The twentyseventh lunar asterism, or nacshatra; also, the time the moon accupies in traversing the nacshatra, இரேவதி. குரங்கானாலுங்குலத்திலெடு. Though an ape, let a wife be from one's own family. குலங்குப்பையிலே பணம்பந்தியிலே. Rank or caste is on the dung-hill, while wealth sits in state; i. e. the wealthy are honored. கோடாலிக்காம்பு குலத்துக்கீனம். The axehandle brings ruin to its race (by assisting to cut down trees)--spoken of a person who brings disgrace and ruin to his family. குலகன்மம், s. Customs attaching to a family, through successive generations, குலாசாரம். Wils. p. 233. KULAKARMMA. குலகாயம், s. The rules or regulations of caste, குலவொழுக்கம். இதுனக்குக்குலகாயமாயிருக்கிறது. This is the custom of your family or tribe. குலகூடஸ்தன், s. The first ancestor of a race or lineage. குலக்கொடி--குலஸ்திரீ--குலபத்தினி --குலாங்கனை, s. The lawful wife. 2. A woman reputed for chastity. 3. A woman of good family and caste, and of repute for chastity. குலக்கொழுந்து, s. A rare son, the sprout or hope of the family. குலவிளக்கு, s. A light to the family or caste-spoken of a chaste matron. குலங்கெட்டவன், s. One who has lost his caste; an object, low-caste fellow. குலசிரேட்டன்--குலஸ்தன்--குலத்தன்-குலமான், s. One born of a good family. குலட்சயம், s. The ruin or decay of a family or tribe. wills. p. 233. KULAKSHAYA. குலதருமம், s. The customs, duties, offices, &c., peculiar to, or proper for, a caste, &c. Wils. 233. KULAD'HARMMA. குலதிலகம்--குலதிலதம், s. One who is an honor to his family; the respectable head of a family. 2. Very pure lineage; eminence of caste. Wils. p. 233. KULATILAKA. குலதம்பிரான்--குலகுரு, s. A family guru, the guru of a race or tribe. குலதெய்வம், s. The family, tutelary deity. 2. The deity of the tribe. குலத்துக்குத்தக்ககுணம், s. Disposition, habits, or propensities peculiar to a caste. குலத்துக்குத்தக்கநடை, s. Behaviour suitable to one's caste. குலந்தெரிக்க, inf. To dwell on another's parentage--commonly in ridicule. குலபதி, s. The head of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 233. KULAPATI. குலப்பகை, s. Natural antagonism between different species--as between cats and dogs. 2. In-bred malice, hatred, &c., between tribes, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழி, s. Offence or malice, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழுது--குலவடு, s. Stigma on a family. 2. Meanness of caste. குலப்பரத்தை, s. A courtezan by birth, or ancestry. 2. A courtezan, not common but kept by one man; a kept mistress. குலமகள்--குலப்பெண், s. THe lawful wife. 2. A woman of good caste, reputed for chastity. குலமக்கட்கழகுதன்கொழுநனைப்பேணுதல். It is becoming in a lawful and virtuous wife to cherish and honor her husband. குலமகன், s. A man of respectable caste. 2. A legitimate son. குலமங்குதல், v. noun. Being reduced in respectability, circumstances, &c. குலமணி, s. A genuine gem; (fig.) one of an illustrious birth. குலமிலான்--குலவீனன், s. A man of low caste. குலமுறைகிளத்த--குலஞ்செப்ப, inf. To give the genealogy of a family. குலங்கூற--குலம்பேச, inf. To twit one of low parentage. 2. To boast or talk of one's own or another's high birth. குலம்புகுந்தவன், s. One who has mingled with persons of a strange caste, a term of reproach. குலம்பெயர, inf. [prov.] To be changed for the better or worse--as a tree by transplanting; to improve or degenerate. குலவித்தை, s. The arts, duties, or employments peculiar to a family or caste. குலவிருது, s. The standard or banner peculiar to a family. 2. A peculiarity or propensity in an individual, common to his family. குலாசாரம், s. The custom, usage, duties, rites, &c., of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARA. குலாசாரங்காட்டுகிறான். He betrays his family or caste propensities. குலாசாரியன், s. The family priest-as குலகுரு. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARYYA. குலாதிக்கன், s. One of high caste or family, குலசிரேட்டன். குலாபிமானம், s. Family pride, pride of birth. 2. Respectability of caste, family, &c., சாதிமானம். Wils. p. 234. KULAB'HIMANA. குலிஞன்--குலிஞ்சன், s. A person of a high family, of honorable descent, &c., குலமுள்ளோன். குலீனன், s. One of a high family, &c. Wils. p. 234. KULEENA. குலோத்துங்கன், s. The respectable chief of a family. 2. The name of an illustrious prince of the Chola dynasty. குலடன், s. An adopted son, a foster child, சுவீகாரபுத்திரன். Wils. p. 233. KULAT'A. குலகிரி--குலபர்வதம்--குலாசலம், s. The eight mountains in Jambu Dwipa, (See கிரி.) 2. Seven mountain which are supposed to be in each of the seven Dwipas. 3. The circular mountains which are fancied to surround the annular seas respectively, together with the one which sorrounds the Pushkara Dwipa. (காந்.) நற்குலம், s. A good caste or tribe. 2. An excellent kind. இதுநற்குலதீவிதிராட்சச்செடி. This is a very choice vine. இவன்நற்குலத்தான்--நற்குலத்தோன். He is a man of a high caste, or family. 20)

canti (p. 159) s. A joining, junction, meeting, union, combination, இசைப்பு. 2. The meeting or junction of two or more roads, rivers, &c., or the place of such meeting, சந்திக்குமிடம். 3. The joining of words, and the changes of letters by elision, reduplication, and substitution in the coalescence of words with each other, or in the addition to a word of particles expressing case, or in the formation of derivatives from a primitive, விகுதிமுதலிய வற்றின்புணர்ச்சி. 4. The intervals of morning and evening twilight, especially the latter, regarded as the union of the day and night, மாலைநேரம்; thus அந்திசந்தி, morning and evening. (c.) 5. [prov.] As அந்திகாவ லன், which see. சந்திக்கரை, s. The place where several roads or rivers meet. (c.) சந்திபண்ண--சந்திமுடிக்க, inf. To perform he daily private worship, morning, noon and evening. (p.) சந்திப்பாடு, v. noun. A mishap supposed to be caused by a malignant spirit in a cross way, or other haunted place. சந்திமறிக்க, inf. [loc.] to avert the displeasure of malignant divinities, in time of epidemics, by presenting them cooling offerings at cross roads, and thus to stop their progress into the country. சந்திமிதிக்க, inf. [prov.] To pass across way at an auspicious time, as after recovering from sickness, especially from the small pox, on first going out. சந்திமிதிப்பிக்க, inf. To cause a child to walk the first time on the 6th month in places where two or more ways meet. சந்தியாகாலம், s. The period of evening twilight, மாலைநேரம். 2. The three seasons of stated worship. (See சந்தி.) 3. The interval between one yuga and another, யுகசந்தி; [ex Sa. Sandhya.] W. p. 89. சந்தியாகாலகருமம், s. Evening devotion. (R.) சந்தியாராகம், s. The redness of the sky at sun-set. (R.) சந்தியாவந்தனம்--சந்தியாவந்தனை, s. [prov. சந்திவந்தனை.] Worship at any of the three stated periods; [ex வந்தனை, worship.] சந்தியிலிருக்க, inf. [prov.] To be ruined, to be driven into the street. சந்தியில்வைக்க, inf. To ruin a person, (lit.) to drive him into the streets. சந்திவிக்கிரகம், s. Forming a friendship with enemies to compass their ruin; one of the modes recommended for dealing with enemies. (p.) சந்தியிற்கொண்டுவர, inf. [prov. fig.] To expose a person to ridicule and shame (lit.) to bring to the street. முச்சந்தி, s. The meeting of three roads. நாற்சந்தி, s. The meeting of four roads or streets. சொற்சந்தி, s. One word combining with another in sense. சந்திவழு, s. Impropriety in the use of grammatical sandhi. The three grammatical sandhis as applied to words of Sanscrit origin are, 1. தீர்க்கசந்தி. 2. குண சந்தி. 3. விருத்திசந்தி. To these a fourth, ஆ திவிருத்திசந்தி is added. (நன்.) சந்திகாரியம், s. Sarasvati, wife of Brahma, the goddess of speech, eloquence, music and literature, generally கலைமகள். --She is fancied to reside on the tongue of Brahma, also on those of poets and orators. (c.) 2. The name of a river, சரசுவதியாறு. 3. (fig) An amiable, excellent woman, குணவதி. W. p. 97. SARASVATI. (p.) சரசுவதிகூடம், s. A repository of books on all kinds of learning--the archives of the Indian Minerva at Tanjore. சரசுவதிபீடம், s. The Parnassus of the Hindus, where science is said to have been acquired intuitively; a term used in praise of a learned man, or in ridicule. (c.) சரசுவதிபூசை, s. The worship of Sarasvati, on the last day of Navaratri, (நவராத்திரி,) or nine night's worship, together with Durga and Lukshmi. On this occasion school-boys and others pile up their books, styles, &c., fold their arms and worship them as an image of the goddesses. (c.) சரசுவதிவாக்கு, s. [prov.] The influence of Sarasvati--regarded as supernatural, endowing a person with gifts for acquiring knowledge, composing poetry, &c., intuitively. (c.) சரசுவதிமாலை, s.
