uṇṭi (p. 59) s. Food, sustenance, eatables, உணவு. 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. The food of carnivorous animals, இரை. (நிகண்டு and திவாகரம்.) 4. (பாரதிதீ.) The food of birds and beasts in general, பற வைவிலங்கிவற்றினுணவு. Four kinds of eating are enumerated, viz.: 1. உண்டல், eating without mastication--as boiled rice, &c. 2. தின்றல், masticating, chewing--as meat, curries, &c. 3. நக்கல், licking--as honey, molasses, lapping. 4. பருகல், drinking, sucking--as a child. Sometimes a fifth is added, viz.: மென்றல், chewing--as spices, pungents, leaves, &c. kept in the mouth. உண்டிசுருங்குதல்பெண்டிர்க்கழகு. It is becoming in a woman to eat little. பேருண்டி, s. A principal meal-as dinner, &c., போசனம். 2. Eating to excess, gluttony, gormandizing, பெருந் தீன். சிற்றுண்டி, s. A light meal--as luncheon, tiffin, பலகாரம். 2. Eating sparingly, சிறுதீன். 3. A kind of small cake, அப்பவருக்கத்தொன்று. 122)

ulvi (p. 66) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. and n. To be sparing in order to leave a supply for others, to forbear, or be reluctant, &c., be bashful in eating, &c., உலோபமாயிருக்க. 2. To evince diffidence in accepting favors, gifts, &c.; to be diffident, or backward in coming into company, கூசியொழுக. 3. To restrain one's self, forbear, ஒறுக்க.--Note. This word seems to be a causative of உலவு in a contracted form. உலவியரமற்சாப்பிடும். Eat without restraint, take as much as you like. சாப்பாட்டையுலவிக்க. To eat food sparingly. அவருடைய முகத்துக்காகவுலவித்துவிட்டுவிட்டேன். One his account I forbore (to act as otherwise I would have done). இங்கேசாப்பிடவுலவிப்பானேன்? Why should you be unwilling to eat here? தன்வயிற்றைத்தானுலவிக்கலாமா? Ought one to deprive himself of necessary food? 8)

oṭukku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுக்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுக்க, v. a. To reduce, compress, bring into a narrower compass, condense, to lessen, bring down--as another's pride, to keep down, keep under, அடக்க. 2. To press, oppress, tyrannize, vex, வருத்த. 3. To reduce the system by medicine or a sparing diet, உடம்பையொடுக்க. 4. To involve one in another--as the elements, cause to disappear--as the worlds, &c., at the close of an age, பூதங்களைலயிக்கச்செய்ய. 5. To close, to finish as a work, the harvest, &c., முடிக்க. 6. To pack in, to put in, to put things close in a bag, a box or other receptacle, செறிக்க. உலகப்பற்றையொவ்வொன்றாயொடுக்க. To relinquish worldly attachments one by one. ஒடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To compress and tie a thing close. 2. To tuck up the skirts and fasten the end behind-as in wet weather. 3. To hem an ola basket, fan, &c. ஒடக்கித்தட்ட, inf. To make a metal utensil thicker and narrower by beating. ஒடுக்கித்தைக்க, inf. To make a garment smaller. ஒடுக்கிவெட்ட, inf. To hew timber reducing the breadth. ஒடுக்குவாய், s. Distorted mouth, கோணல்வாய். வீட்டையொடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To build a house narrow. உடம்பையொடுக்க, inf. To reduce the body by eating sparingly. 2. To contract the body--as a tiger, a cat, &c., to reduce the body to a smaller compass --as in a leaping, sneaking, or creeping posture. செலவையொடுக்க--செலவையொ டுக்கிப்பிடிக்க. inf. To retrench expenses. 2. To live frugally, sparingly, &c. வயிற்றையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the appetite, to reduce the quantity of food in order to save money. புலனையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the senses--as ascetics or otherwise; to mortify the senses, passions, &c. 2. To call home the thoughts and fix them on divine things. ஒடுக்கு, v. noun. Contracting, closing, compression, narrowness, அடக் கம். 2. s. A corner to creep into, இடுக்கு. ஒடுக்கிடம், s. A corner, a narrow or confined place, மூலை. 2. A recess, a hiding place, மறைவிடம். ஒடுக்குச்சீட்டு--ஒடுக்குத்துண்டு, s. A receipt given by government for money, வரிச்சீட்டு. பணவொடுக்கு, v. noun. [prov.] A remittance of money. 48)

kiḷḷu (p. 112) கிறேன், கிள்ளினேன், வேன், கிள்ள, v. a. To pinch with the finger and thump, the nails, &c., கையாற்கிள்ள. 2. To pinch off, to pluck, to nip, to pick--as a leaf, &c., இலைமுதலியகிள்ள. 3. To hold, take up, carry, &.--as with the beak, the fingers and thump, &c.; to take up a little, a pinch, &c., கொஞ்சமாயெடுக்க. வயிறுகிள்ளுகிறது. I am pinched with hunger. கிள்ளாக்கு, s. A bit of leaf, especially an ola given as a token of being sent by some superior, அதிகாரநறுக்கு. 2. A note of hand, a bit of leaf, a token from a person in authority--as a passport, warrant, letter of introduction, &c., உத்தார ச்சீட்டு. கிள்ளாப்பிறாண்டு, s. [prov.] A kind of child's play, pinching, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. 2. fig. Want of attention to guests, at a feast; distribution to them in small quantities, அலட்சியம். கிள்ளாப்பிறாண்டுபண்ண, inf. To supply guests too sparingly. 2. To take sparingly at a feast from modesty, delicacy, &c. 3. To give stintingly in charity, &c. கிள்ளிக்காட்ட, inf. To give a hint, a signal; also a summery, &c.; lit. a pinch. கிள்ளிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a little from a great quantity. 2. To give but little, a pinch, &c. கிள்ளித்தெளிக்கமாட்டான். local. He will not even give a jerk. கிள்ளிப்பிடுங்க, inf. To pinch and pluck off. கிள்ளிவிட, inf. To stir up; to excite, to instigate. கிள்ளிவைக்க, inf. To set or take a little from a heap--as the small mnemonic heaps in measuring grain. கிள்ளுகீரை, s. Greens plucked off from the root. அவன்உனக்குக்கிள்ளுக்கீரையோ. Is he a mere youngster, that you may cuff him as you please? கிள்ளுக்கீரைப்பண்ண, inf. To insult, to treat insultingly. கிள்ளுக்கீரையாய்நினைத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak contemptibly. கிள்ளு, v. noun. A pinch, a nip; a little piece of betel-leaf, tobacco, &c., கிள்ளப் பட்டதுண்டு. 2. A pinch in quantity, துணி க்கை. கிள்ளுங்கிழியுமாய்ப்போகக்கடவது. Being straitened--as in a narrow room, &c., ஒடுக் கம். 4. Pressing or holding one to a thing, using coercion, பலாத்காரமாய்க்கேட்கை. 5. A sudden encounter--as at a corner, &c., சடு தியிலெதிர்ப்படுகை; [ex குறுமை, et முட்டு.] குறுமுட்டன், s. A person daringly insolent; a brute, a savage. குறுமுட்டாய்ப்பிடிக்க, inf. He is displeased. குறைபாடு, v. noun. Deficiency, defect, ஈனம். 2. Want, lack, destitution, குறைவு. 3. Indigence, want, poverty, தரித்திரம். குறைப்பிராணனாய், adv. Half-dead-as குற்றுயிராய். குறைக்காரியம், s. The remainder--as of an affair, story, discourse, subject, business, &c. குறைநாள், s. The remainder or part of the day. 2. The days wanting to complete a given period. குறைப்பேர், s. The rest of the persons. குறைப்பொழுது, s. The remainder of of day, or time. குறைமாதம், s. Wanting in months-as premature delivery. 2. Deficiency in a month. குறைமாதத்துப்பிள்ளை, s. A child of premature birth. குறையுடல்--குறைத்தலை, s. A headless body, which is said sometimes to dance on the field of battle; trunks divested of heads. குறைக்கொள்ளி, s. A brand partially consumed. குறைச்சால், s. The balk in ploughing, உழவறாவிடம். See சால். குறைவயிறு, s. Stomach partially supplied; hunger not fully satisfied. குறைவயிறாய்சாப்பிட்டேன். I ate sparingly. குறைவேலை, s. An incomplete, unfinished work. தலைக்குறை, s. [in gram.] A ph&ae;resis --as மரை. for தாமரை. See under தலை. இடைக்குறை, s. [in gram.] Syncope-as உரம், for உதரம். See under இடை. கடைக்குறை, s. [in gram.] A pocope-as நீல் for நீலம். koṟi (p. 147) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To work or force off the husks from grains of rice with the fore-teeth--as persons, or with the beak--as birds; to bite or nibble grain, &c., பல்முதலியவற்றாற் கொறிக்க. 2. (fig.) To pick, eat but little; to piddle, கொஞ்சங்கொஞ்சமாயுண்ண. 3. [prov.] To make a ticking, clucking sound, கட்டுவிட்டொலிக்க. 4. To chirp--as a lizard, &c., பல்லிமுதலிய கொறிக்க. கொறிநெற்பதமாயிற்று. The paddy is grown so ripe that the husk can be easily forced off. அவன் என் தலையைக் கொறிக்கப்பார்க்கிறான். He attempts to nibble my head, i. e. to injure me. ஏன்சும்மாகொறிக்கிறாய்? [prov.] Why do you chatter in vain? கொறித்துப்பார்த்தல், v. noun. Trying rice that has been for husking, by biting, to ascertain whether it is dry enough. 2. Looking staringly with impudence. கொறிப்பு--கொறித்தல், v. noun. The act of nibbling or nipping. 25)

cāṭṭu (p. 174) கிறேன், சாட்டினேன், வேன், சாட் ட, v. a. To transfer as a debt; to devolve, lay or cast on; to assign unto, ascribe to, ஒப்பிக்க. 2. To impute, to accuse, to attribute falsely, to impugn, குற்றஞ்சாற்ற. 3. To make excuse or pretext of a thing, to act under cover of something else, to evade, போக்குச்சொல்ல. (c.) 4. (R.) To beat or strike, அடிக்க. கோவிலைச்சாட்டிவயிறுவளர்க்கிறான். He maintains himself under the pretence of serving (begging for) the temple. சாட்டிக்கழிக்க, inf.
