aḷḷu (p. 33) கிறேன், அள்ளினேன், வேன், அள்ள, v. a. To take up a handful, lade, bale, take up in the hollow of the hand-as water, sand, grain, &c., கையான்முகக்க. 2. To sweep away as a flood, carry off in large quantities or great numbers as an epidemic, famine, thief, &c., to ravage, plunder, pillage, spoil, devastate, வாரிக் கொள்ள. (c.) அள்ளாதுகுறையாது சொல்லாது பிறவாது. If nothing be taken, nothing will be wanting; if nothing be spoken, nothing will be rumored; i. e. there is no rumor however vague, but has some truth in it. அரிசியள்ளுகிறகாகம்போலே திரிகிறான். He wanders about as greedy (of gain) as the crow is of the rice which it steals. கையையள்ளிப்போட்டது. It has grazed or taken off the skin of my hand (whether a bow, hot iron, or any thing else.) அள்ளிக்கொட்ட, inf. To take up from a quantity and shoot down elsewhere. 2. To give liberally. அள்ளிருள், s. Thick darkness, or darkness so dense that it may be grasped. அள்ளுகொள்ளை, s. Great waste, profusion, extravagance or taking more than what is right, பெருங்கொள்ளை. அள்ளு, v. noun. A handful of grain, &c., given to the man who measures, அளவுகூலித்தானியம். அள்ளெடுக்கிறவன், s. The man who receives the handful of grain for measuring. அள்ளுதல், v. noun. Being narrow, close, நெருங்கல். 2. Taking up a handful of water, rice, grain, &c., getting water in a basket, pot, &c., taking out rice, milk, &c., by a spoon from a cup, &c., அள்ளுகை. 43)

uṇṭākku (p. 59) கிறேன், உண்டாக்கி னேன், வேன், உண்டாக்க, v. a. To make, cause to exist, create, effect, occasion, generate, படைக்க. 2. To raise corps, trees, &c., to propagate, cultivate, விளைவிக்க. 3. To raise to affluence, enrich, விருத்திக்கப்பண்ண. 4. To produce, form, உண்டுபண்ண; [ex உள்.] (c.) உண்டாக்கிவைக்க, inf. ūr (p. 70) s. A country, a village, town, or city, புரம். ஊரறிந்தபார்ப்பான். A brahman who knows the whole country or town; i. e. a person competent for business. ஊருடன்கூடிவாழ். Prosper in the society of your fellow citizens. ஊரோடேபோய்ச்சேர்ந்தான். He arrived at home. ஊரன், s. The chief of an agricultural district, மருதத்தலைவன். (p.) ஊரவர்கள்--ஊரார், s. Inhabitants of a village, town, country, &c. 2. Others, strangers, not one's own people, அன்னியர்.--Used adjectively, the ர் is often dropped--as ஊராகாரியம், others' affairs; ஊராசொத்து, others' property; ஊ ராகாணி, others' land. ஊராருடைமைக்குப்பேராசைகொள்ளுதல்..... Coveting other men's property-துஷ்டப்பிள்ளைக்குஊரார்புத்திசொல்லுவார்கள்... An unruly child will be chastized by the magistrates. ஊரார்கையிற்கொடுக்க, inf. To deliver into another man's hand. ஊராளி, s. The ruler, magistrate, or headman of a district, ஊரதிகாரி. ஊரிலிகம்பலை, s. [prop. ஊர்கலி கம்பலை.] A village quarrel, tumult, &c. ஊரின்னிசை, s. A poem concerning the heroes of a town, or country, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். See பிரபந்தம். ஊருக்குப்போக, inf. To go to a town, to go on a journey. ஊருணி, s. A public tank accessible to all in the town, ஊரடுத்தகுளம். ஊருணிநீர்நிறைந்தற்றேயுலகவாம்பேரறிவாளன் றிரு. The wealth of one possessing great wisdom, and who is much liked by the public is like a tank filled with water to which all have access. ஊரெழுச்சி, s. Rising of citizens to present complaints to the authorities; also insurrection, ஊர்க்கலகம். ஊர்கூடுதல், v. noun. Assembling --as citizens. ஊர்கூடிச்செக்குத்தள்ளவேண்டுமா? Is it necessary that the whole city come together to turn the oilman's press? i. e. a trifling matter does not require a concourse of people. ஊர்கோலம்வர--ஊர்வலம்வர, inf. To pass about as a nuptial procession, first to the right as being auspicious, கிராமப்பிரதட்சணம்வர. ஊர்க்கதை, s. Rumor, countrytalk, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. 2. Unfounded reports, slander, defamation, பொய்ச்செய்தி. 3. A wild, romantic story, வீண்செய்தி. ஊர்க்கலகம், s. A village quarrel, ஊரிலுண்டாகுங்கலகம். 2. A general insurrection, இராசதுரோகமானகலகம். ஊர்க்காறுபாறு, s. The affairs of a place, public affairs, ஊர்க்காரியம். 2. Management of public affairs, ஊர்விசாரிப்பு. 3. Meddling with other's affairs, அன்னி யருடையகாரியவிசாரிப்பு. ஊர்க்குருவி, s. A sparrow, அ டைக்கலக்குருவி. உயரப்பறந்தாலுமூர்க்குருவிபருந்தாமா? Though a sparrow soars high, will it become a kite? ஊர்க்கொள்ளை, s. Devastation by an invading army. 2. Extortion by a headman, &c. 3. Epidemic, or other public calamities, ஊழிநோய். ஊர்த்தலைமை, s. Headship over the district. 2. A chief or superior person in a district. 3. The headman of a district. ஊர்நேரிசை, s. A poem in the நேரிசைவெண்பா incorporated with the name of the hero's town, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். ஊர்ப்பகை, s. Public hatred, general dislike. 2. Hatred of one's own country. ஊருடன்பகைக்கில்வேருடன்கெடும். One who lives contentiously with his fellow citizens shall be rooted out. (ஔவை.) ஊர்ப்பழி, s. Public censure, or blame, ஊர்நிந்தை. ஊர்ப்பாடு, s. Others' affairs-spoken of one inattentive to his own, அன்னியருடையகாரியம். ஊர்ப்புகைச்சல், s. The appearance of smoke at a distance--regarded as a calamitous omen. 2. Countrytalk, rumor, groundless report. ஊர்ப்புரட்டு, s. A great conspiracy, a monstrous fabrication of falsehood, in which one leads and takes others with him. 2. A gross falsehood. ஊர்ப்புரளி, s. Sedition, insurrection, a general commotion, ஊர்க்கலகம். ஊர்மனை, s. Habitations, a place inhabited as distinguished from a desert. ஊர்மன்று, s. A public hall, ஊரம் பலம். ஊர்வெண்பா, s. The வெண்பா of the town--a poem consisting of ten வெண்பா, in praise of a town, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். பேரூர், s. A large town. சிற்றூர், s. A small town. 2. The name of a village. 19)

To rise, ascend, get up, rise by one's own power, to rise as a thing by its own levity, rise as a heavenly body, a bird, a kite, &c., to soar, &c., எழும்ப. 2. To stir, be excited, roused, &c., மனங்கிளர. 3. To become resuscitated, rise to life, உயிரடைந்தெழும்ப. 4. To rise to eminence, தலைமைப்பட. 5. To rise and spread as a rumor, பரம்ப. 6. To become instrumental to, ஏதுவாக. 11. To remove from a dwelling, lodging, village, &c., குடியெழும்ப. 12. To rise in price, விலையேற. அவனுக்குக்கையெழவில்லை. His hand does not open to give any thing. அதைச்செய்யவெனக்குக்கைகாலெழவில்லை. My hands and feet would not stir (rise) to do such a thing. அதைச்சொல்லநாவெழாது. My tongue will not stir (rise) to speak so. கூரேயிறெழாதகுழவி. A babe that has not yet teethed. எழுஞாயிறு, s. The rising sun, உதயாதித்தன். 2. Quinsy, a mortal disease which begins with the rising sun; when it begins in the night it is termed படுஞாயிறு. (Mat. Ind. Opp.) எழுந்தபடி--எழுந்தமானம், s. At random, in an unpremeditated manner, carelessly, மனதிலேதோன்றியபடி. எழுந்தருள, inf. To rise, become present or manifest as the divinity in an idol on consecration; to be present as a great personage, &c., தோன்ற. 2. To repair to a place--as a sage, holy person, a king, &c., பெரியோர்வர. எழுந்தருளுநாயகர்--எழுந்தருளும் விக்கிரகம், s. The secondary idol in a temple, உச்சவவிக்கிரகம், representing the same deity as the first, carried about in processions while the other remains stationary--opp. to the மூலவிக்கிரகம். எழுந்தருள்படி, s. A procession of heathen gods. எழுந்திருக்க, inf. To rise, ascend, get up, &c., எழ, spoken chiefly of men. --Note. This is more full and expressive than எழ, alone. எழுந்துபோக, inf. To depart, to go to meet a person. எழுந்தேற்றம், s. A Roman catholic procession, உற்சவம். 2. Pride, selfconsequence, arrogance, பெருமை. 3. Rashness, presumptuousness, துணிவு. எழுமுகனை, s. The very beginning of a process, or period, தொடக்கம். எழுவான், s. The east, the place of sun-rising, oriens, கிழக்கு, eastern--opp. to படுவான். எழுவான்றொடங்கிப்படுவான்மட்டும். From east to west. என்வீட்டக்கெழுவானிலே. East of my house. எழல்--எழுகை, v. noun. Rising, ascent, எழுச்சி. எழுச்சி, v. noun. Rising, ascent, elevation, எழும்புகை. 2. One who sings to rouse a prince, or a great man of a morning. துயிலெழுப்புதல்பாடுவோன். எழுச்சிமுரசம், s. A drum beaten to rouse a king, commandant, garrison, &c. of a morning, துயிலெழுப்புமுரசம். எழுச்சியிலை, s. A leaf to cure ophthalmia, கண்ணோய்மருந்திலை. படையெழுச்சி, s. A military expedition, marching to battle. பள்ளியெழுச்சி, s. A kind of poem sung to rouse princess, &c. from sleep. மேலெழுச்சி--மேலெழுந்தவாரி, [prov.] Superficiality. மேலெழுச்சியாய்ப்பேச, inf. ōmam (p. 84) s. A burnt offering, the casting of clarified butter, the nine kinds of grain, &c., into the sacred fire, accompanied with prayers, &c. It forms an essential part of the marriage ceremony and is performed at the அந்தியேட்டி, a chief ceremony for deceased persons and in the worship of the temple, &c. In poetry the burnt sacrifice of animals, யாகம். Wils. p. 98. HOMA. ஓமகுண்டம், s. A hole made in the ground for sacrificial fire. Wils. p. 78. HOMAKUNDA. ஓமசாந்தி, s. Mitigating, propitiating by fire, அக்கினிசாந்தி. 2. Burnt offering at a marriage to propitiate the god of fire who is thus invoked as a witness of the transaction, விவாகத்திற்செய்யுமோம சாந்தி. 3. Any additional sacrifice performed to obtain pardon for having omitted certain ceremonies in a sacrifice, யாகசாந்தி. ஓமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To perform a burnt sacrifice, அக்கினிகாரியஞ்செய்ய. ஓமதிரவியம், s. The requisites for a sacrifice including the firewood, &c., யாகஉபகரணம். ஓமப்பொடி, s. The ashes of the ஓமம்--deemed sacred, and used for smearing the person, யாகநீறு. ஓமமண்டபம், s. A sacrificial hall, யாகசாலை. ஓமம்வளர்க்க, inf. To kindle and feed the sacrificial fire which should never be suffered to go out; to attend to this is the special duty of the student or பிரமசாரி. ஓமவிறகு, s. Sacrificial fire-wood of different kinds. See சமித்து. ஓமாக்கினி, s. Sacrificial fire, ஓ மத்தழல். Wils. p. 18. HOMAGNI. ஓமல், s. [vul.] A rumor, report, spreading as a rumor, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. ஊருக்கோமல்வீட்டுக்குவயிற்றெரிச்சல். He has the name of being a rich man, but in his house there is want and misery. ஓமற்படுதல்--ஊரோமல், v. noun. Spreading as a rumor, being rumored. உன்னாலிந்தாகசியம்ஊரோமலாச்சுதே. The secret has been bruited throughout the town by you. 98)

kiṭ (p. 108) க்கிறேன், ந்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. n. To lie, lie down, lie in a state of sleep or inactivity, &c., to lie-as a stone, or other lifeless bodies, படுக்க. 2. To be in a state or condition, to exist, இருக்க. 3. To remain, to continue, தரித்திருக்க.--Note. It is often used contemptuously, and sometimes assumes a transitive form. கிடக்கட்டும். Never mind; it is of no consequence; let it be; leave it untouched. அதுவெகுநாளைக்குக் கிடக்கும். It will endure a long time; will last long. காரணங்கிடக்கும். There is a cause. முட்டக்கிடவாது. It will not bear a slight hit or shove. ஊர்அமர்க்களமாய்க்கிடக்கிறது. There is a row or riot in town, lit. the country is a battlefield. அதுகிடக்க. Leaving that; further more. சும்மாகிட. Be quiet, hush. சென்றதுகிடந்திட. Leaving what is past. பகைவர்வருகிறாரென்று கிடக்கிறது. The rumour, the report is, that the enemy is coming. வியாதியாய்க்கிடக்க, inf. To be sick. கிடக்கை, v. noun. Lying, கிடத்தல். 2. s. State, condition, நிலைமை. 3. A bed, a couch, any sleeping place, படுக்கை. 4. The earth, பூமி. மனக்கிடக்கை, s. A feeling, as it exists in the mind; one's own feeling, மனக்கருத்து. 2. Emotion, pathos, passion, உளத்தியல். கிடப்பு, v. noun. Lying, கிடக்கை. 2. s. State, condition--commonly undersirable--as suffering, hunger, &c., இருக்கை. கிடை, v. noun. Lying, lying prostrate, a reclining posture, கிடக்கை. 2. s. State, condition--commonly not desirable, நிலை மை. 3. A fold, a pen, a stall, a nest, a lair, any place where beasts or birds lie, --as ஆட்டுக்கிடை, a sheep-fold, மாட்டுக் கிடை, a cow-stall, &c. கிடைகாட்ட, inf. To lie on the back-as beasts when dying. கிடைகூட்ட--கிடைமறிக்க--கிடைவை க்க, inf. To pen up or fold cattle for their manure. கிடைச்சரக்கு, s. Goods lying long on hand. கிடைதலை, s. The condition of being bed-ridden; prostration by sickness or old age. கிடைநாய், s. A shepherd's dog. கிடைப்பட, inf. To be laid on a bed of sickness, to lie ill. கிடைப்பாடு, v. noun. Lingering on a bed of sickness; being bed-ridden, being long lost, by theft, &c. கிடைபாய், s. Bed-mat, a mat for sleeping on. See பாய். கிடைமாடு, s. Cows in a pen, கிடையி லுள்ளமாடு. கட்டுக்கிடையாயிருக்க, inf. To lie a long time unopened, and thus liable to damage. கிடந்தகிடை, Lying as before. கிடந்தகிடையிலேகிடக்கிறான். He still lies as he did. 2. He remains as he was. கிடந்தகிடையைமறந்துவிட்டான். He has forgotten his former estate. நான்மூன்றுமாசங்கிடைவிடவில்லை. I have not left my bed for these three months. கிடவாக்கிடை, [vul.] Hardship, unusual severity, hunger, &c., கஷ்டம். கிடவாக்கிடைகிடக்க, inf. To be starved. 2. To pinch one's self. 27)

Tenders or proposals in writing. கேள்விக்காரர், s. [prov.] Bidders at an auction. 2. Persons who tender proposals at a purchase. 3. Candidates or applicants for an office. கேள்விச்செவி, s. Listening credulously to hear-say reports. கேள்விச்செவியன் ஊரைக்கெடுத்தான். The credulous ruler ruined the country. கேள்விப்பத்திரம், s. [prov.] A request, application, petition, &c., in writing. கேள்விகேட்பாடு, s. [local.] Judicial inquiry, investigation. கேள்வியற்றஊர்--கேள்வியில்லாதஊர், s. A town without justice. கேள்விமுறை, s. Inquiry into; superintendence, control, management. கேள்வியாக, inf. To be heard, to be reported; to reach the ears--as news; to be heard in court. கை கைகாட்டு, v. noun. Gesture with the hand, as in dancing; beck of the hand. கைகுவிக்க, inf. To hold up the hands joined, in worship, &c. See குவி. கைகுறண்ட, inf. To have the hands bent by spasms. 2. To be cramped in the hands. 3. To be stingy, parsimonious, close-fisted. கைகூச, inf. To be backward in using the hand. See கூசு. கைகூட, inf. To come to hand, be obtained, to succeed, அனுகூலப்பட. அவன்செய்வதெல்லாம் அவனுக்குக் கைகூடும். All that he does prospers. கைகூப்பு, v. noun. Raising the joined hands in worship--as கூப்பு. 2. The distance from the tip of the fingers to the feet, when the hands are joined and raised above the head. கைகொட்ட, inf. To clap the hands. கைகோக்க, inf. To clasp one another's hands, to join hands. 2. To be arm in arm, to take another's arm. கைகோத்தாட, inf. To dance with arms linked. கைகோள், s. A course of conduct, especially in love affairs. (அகப்பொ.) கேள்வி, v. noun. The grand subjects of information under four heads; 1. அ றம், virtue or a virtuous course of action; all knowledge relating to the nature or practice of virtue, or having virtue as its object, including religion, jurisprudence, ethies and every thing connected with the well-being of society, and the promotion of universal benevolence towards all sentient beings. This is subdivided into, 1. இல்லறம், the duties and usages of man--as a member of society. 2. துறவறம், the duties and practices of the recluse, who renounces social life and retires to the desert. 2. பொருள், wealth, property, substance; truth; all kinds of knowledge relating to the nature, acquisition and uses of learning and wealth--including. 1. கல்விப்பொருள், general knowledge, and science. 2. செல் வப்பொருள், property, trade, commerce and the various occupations for gain or the support of life. 3. இன்பம், delight, gratification, knowledge of the nature and means of pleasure and bliss--especially love and matrimony. 4. வீடு, liberation from births, knowledge relating to final emancipation or eternal felicity. --Note. Another classification makes five parts, the fifth embracing the practice of the rules laid down for the attainment of the benefits implied in the four. 72)
