cāti (p. 176) s. Sex, tribe, caste--as Hindu castes, குலம். 2. Lineage, race, family, மரபு. 3. Kind, class, sort, species, இனம். 4. Nutmeg, the tree, சாதிக்காய்மரம். 5. The right kind or best of the class, &c., சாதியி லுயர்ந்தது. (c.) 6. One of the ten modes of beating time, தாளப்பிரமாணம்பத்தினொன்று. W. p. 347. JATI. 7. (சது.) A tree in general, மரப்பொது.--Note. Hindu caste in the time of Menu. according to the சூடாமணிநிகண்டு was as follows 1. பிராமணர், Brahmans, the sacerdotal caste--reputed to have sprung from the face of the god Brahma; 2. சத்திரியர் or க்ஷத்திரியர், the royal or military caste--said to have sprung from his shoulders; 3. வைசியர், Vaisya caste as sprung from his thighs. This class is threefold; (a) கோவைசியர், herdsmen. (b) தனவைசியர், the mercantile caste including செட்டிகள். (c.) பூவைசியர், the agriculturalists embracing வேளாளர். 4. சூத்தி ரர், Sudra caste, embracing artificers and other servile tribes, supposed to have sprung from Brahma's feet. Of these eighteen are named, but the number is much greater. See குடிமை.--Note. 2. All the Tamil authorities, except the Nighandu, make the கோவைசியர் and பூவைசியர் including the வேளாளர் as the fourth or சூத் திரர் caste, and all inferior to these as சங்கர சாதி or mixed caste.--Note. 3. Brahmans call the கோவைசியர் and the பூவைசியர், சற்சூத்தி ரர் or superior Sudras, and the சூத்திரர் they call தற்சூத்திரர் or real Sudras. எந்தச்சாதியாடுவேணும். What kind of sheep do you want? நான்குபதினெட்டுச்சாதி. A mixture of the castes, high and low, (lit.) the four and eighteen castes intermixed, in contempt. சாதிக்குத்தக்கபுத்தி. The different degrees of intellect that characterize the respective castes; commonly spoken of inferiors. சாதியந்தப்புத்திகுலமந்த ஆசாரம். Caste disturbance, commonly, the quarrel between இடங்கை and வலங்கை; the right and left hand castes. சாதிக்காரன், s. A person of good caste, of unmixed descent. 2. A genuine European, or one of pure European descent. அன்னியசாதி, s. Foreigners, low castes, tribes, &c. 2. (அள.) Foreign species, not of its own species, பிறவினம். கீழ்சாதி, s. Low caste. மேல்சாதி, s. High caste. ஈனசாதி, s. Degraded caste. See ஈ னம். தீண்டாச்சாதி, s. A degraded low caste person, not to be touched. தின்னாச்சாதி, s. Castes in whose houses, one of a better caste will not eat. பலபட்டடைச்சாதி, s. Mixed caste, mixed multitude of low castes. மிருகசாதி, s. The brute creation. 2. Stupid tribes, அறிவிலார். மடையசாதி--மடைச்சாதி, s. Ignorant people. 2. Low and ignorant tribes. சாதிகம்--சாதீகம், s. Customs peculiar to a tribe or caste. (p.) சாதிக்குணம், s. Habits, characters, disposition, &c., peculiar to a caste. சாதிசனம், s. Tribe and kindred. (c.) சாதிசாங்கரியம், s. Mixture of caste by marriage, சாதிக்கலப்பு. (p.) சாதிதருமம், s. Peculiar and prescribed duties, practices, employments, &c., of the respective castes, &c. See தருமம். சாதித்தலைமை, s. The chieftaincy over the tribe. 2. The chief, chieftain, &c. சாதிக்காரை, s. [prov.] Worthiness, competency, fitness, &c., in a disciple for a high degree of the illuminating தீட்சை of the Guru. (Limited.) சாதிப்பிரஞ்சகரம், s. Breaking caste, departure from caste-rules--one of the nine sins for which atonement is to be made; [ex பிரஞ்சம், injury.] (p.) சாதிபேதம்--சாதிவித்தியாசம்--சாதிவேற் றுமை, s. Regard for one's own caste, sympathy among those of the same caste; [ex மானம்.] சாதிமுறை--சாதிமுறைமை, s. The laws, usages, rules, &c., of a caste. சாதிமான், s. One of a superior caste. சாதியாசாரம், s. Habits, customs, manners, professions, &c., of the caste. சாதியீனன், s. One of low caste, an out-caste. சாதியையிழுக்க, inf. To expatiate or dwell upon the low parentage of another. சாதியைவிட, inf. To break caste. சாதிவருணாச்சிரமம், s. [com. சாதிவ ருணாச்சிரம்.] The caste, class, religious order, &c.,--Note. This word is sometimes used as synonymous with சாதியா சாரம். சாதிநீலம், s. A genuine sapphire.-Note. All the gems, metals, &c., are in like manner distinguished. சாதிக்குதிரை, s. A horse of fine breed. சாதிக்காய், s. Nutmeg, (lit.) the nut of the சாதி tree. சாதிக்காய்த்தயிலம், s. Oil of nutmeg. சாதிச்சரக்கு, s. Good commodities. See சரக்கு. சாதிப்பூ, s. nūl (p. 279) s. Thread, yarn, string, line, இழை. 2. A literary or scientific treatise, கல்விநூல். 3. Science, system, literature, சாஸ்திரம். 4. Deliberation, counsel, mature consideration, எண்ணம். (சது.) 5. The badge-string of the sacerdotal, the royal and of some mechanical tribes, பூணூல். 6. A string tied round an image in a Roman Catholic Church, in token of a vow, பொருத்தனைநூல். 7. A wedding-badge, தாலிநூல். 8. Carpenter's or mason's line, எற்றுநூல்.--In combination it takes grammatical changes like நால். Of நூல் or sacred learning there are நூ three: 1. முதனூல், an original scientific work regarded as divine, the Vedas; 2. வழிநூல், a work derived from and agreeing with the original, being an enlargement, as the Vedanta; 3. சார்புநூல், a work following the original, secondary, but differing in some particulars; collateral writings, as the Adwitta. நூற்பலகல். Study many books. (Avv.) நூலில்லாமல்மாலைகோத்தல். Stringing flowers without a thread; i. e. fabricating. நூற்மறைதெரிந்துசீலத்தொழுகு. Search the Shastras, and lead a regular life. (Avv.) நூலச்சு, s. A weaver's reed, நெசவச்சு. 2. [prov.] A goldsmith's mould for drawing wire, கம்பியச்சு. நூலடி, s. [prov.] A line or membrane passing from the privy parts to the anus. 2. A mark made with the carpenter's line, நூற்குறி. நூலட்டவணை, s. Contents of a book. நூலரங்கேற்ற, inf. See அரங்கேற்ற. நூலறிவு, s. Knowledge of science. நூலாசிரியன், s. The author of a work. நூலாதாரம், s. A primer or first book; the alphabet; [ex ஆதாரம்.] நூலாமாலை, s. Craft, artifice, devices. (R.) நூலாய்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Critics, reviewers, revisers. நூலான்புடை, s. A spider's web. [Madura usage.] See ஒட்டடை. நூலான்பூச்சி, s. The spider, சிலந்திப் பூச்சி. (Beschi.) நூலியற்கை, s. Moral of legal rules. நூலியாப்பு, s. The composition of a work, being of four kinds: 1. தொகுத்தல், substance in brief, compendium, synopsis; 2. விரித்தல், detail, amplification; 3. தொகைவிரி, compendium and detail; 4. மொழிபெயர்ப்பு, translation. நூலிழந்தவள், appel. n. A widow; a woman divested of her wedding-badge, தாலியறுத்தவன். நூலிழை, s. A single thread. நூலிழைக்க, inf. To reel yarn, to disentangle yarn from the skein and wind it on the reel, to unwind yarn. நூலுண்டை, s. A ball of thread, yarn, cotton, &c., நூலுருண்டை. 2. A weaver's bobbin with the yarn, தார்க்கெண்டை. நூலுத்தி, s. The proper arrangement of words, as தந்திரவுத்தி. நூலுந்தாலியும். The wedding string and badge. நூலுரைப்போன், appel. n. A teacher. நூலுரையுணர்வோர், appel. n. [pl.] Learned men, கற்றோர். நூலுறிஞ்சி, appel. n. A weaver. (in contempt.) நூலுறுப்பு, s. The component parts of a treatise. See உறுப்பு. நூலெடுக்க, inf. To buy thread as a weaver. 2. See எடு, v. நூலேணி, s. A rope-ladder, கயிற்றேணி. 2. [in mythol.] Fancied threads or strings, as a guide, by which to pass and repass through the sky, to and from the world of the celestials. 3. [prov.] The shrouds of a vessel, பாய்மரத்தேணி. நூலோடுதல், v. noun. Warping for the loom, பாவோடுதல். நூலோட்ட, inf. To sew or stitch loosely, to haste. நூலோர், s. [pl.] Brahmans as wearing the sacred thread, பார்ப்பார். 2. The learned, the literati, அறிவுடையோர். 3. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். (சது.) நூல்கேட்க, inf. To learn a science under a teacher. See கேள், v. நூல்சுற்றுதல், v. noun. Rolling or winding yarn, thread, &c., on a ball, skein, &c., 2. Winding thread round a sacrificial pot. See கும்பகலசம். நூல்செய்வித்தோன், appel. n. The patron of a work, or a person who moves the author to write a book. நூல்திரிக்க--நூல்முறுக்க, inf. To twist yarn. நூல்நிமிண்டுதல், v. noun. Twisting broken threads together. நூல்நிமிண்டுகிறபேச்சு. Unconnected talk. நூல்போடுதல், v. noun. Marking with a thread, as a carpenter, &c., குறிபோடு தல். 2. Putting on the thread of the Brahman or other caste, பூணூல்போடுதல். நூல்போட்டுப்பிளத்தல், v. noun. Marking and cleaving, as timber. 2. Making an exact division, commonly into halves. 3. [in irony.]Administering strict or rigid justice. நூல்வலை, s. A fisherman's net. நூல்வல்லோர், s. [pl.] The learned, the literati, கல்விமான்கள். 2. Ministers of state, மந்திரியர். நூல்வழக்கு, s. The sentiments or theory of a work, நூலினேற்பாடு. நூல்வழிநிற்றல், v. noun. Acting up to the moral precepts of a book. நூல்விடுதல், v. noun. Spinning a thread and letting itself down, as a spider, or caterpillars. நூல்விதி, s. Injunction, prescription or rule laid down in books. நூல்விரிவு, s. Amplification or detail of a work. நூற்கயிறு, s. String made of thread. நூற்கருத்து, s. The sentiments of an author. See கருத்து. 2. The author's meaning of any given passage. நூற்சுழி, s. A skein of thread. நூற்குச்சு, s. A tassel of cotton thread. நூற்குஞ்சம், s. A number of threads composing the warp in a loom. See குஞ்சம். 2. A skein. நூற்குற்றம், s. The ten faults or defects in a literary composition. See under குற்றம். நூற்சரடு, s. Cotton thread for stringing beads. நூற்சார்பு, s. Sentiments inculated in a work, &c. See சார்பு. நூற்சுருள்--நூற்சுருணை, s. A skein or clew of thread. நூற்பகந்திரம், s. A venereal ulcer on the peritoneum. See பகந்திரம். நூற்படுகு, s. A weaver's warp. நூற்பந்து, s. A ball of thread. நூற்பயன், s. The general ends or objects of literature. See நாற்பொருள். நூற்பழக்கம், v. noun. Acquaintance with science, literature, &c. நூற்பா, s. A kind of அகவல் verse, commonly employed by lexicographers, சூத்திரப்பா. 2. Warp in weaving, தறியிற் பிணைக்கும்பா. நூற்பாவகவல், s. The நூற்பா verse. நூர்புலவர், s. [pl.] Persons of accomplished or distinguished learning. நூற்புறத்திணை, s. Proof from established authority; a term used by Beschi in Tonnool. நூற்புறனடை, s. Notes of an explanatory character given at the end of a work. See புறனடை. நூற்பொருள், s. Subjects treated of or inculcated in a book. 2. Contents of a book, நூலட்டவணை. நூற்றீட்சை, s. Spiritual illumination by the Shastras. See தீட்சை. நூற்றார், s. A weaver's bobbin; [ex தார்.] நூனயம், s. Advantage or pleasure of learning, கல்விநயம். 2. Superiority of one work over another, on the same subject, நூலின்மேன்மை. நூனாழி--நூல்நாழி, s. A weaver's shuttle. See நாடா. நெ. A letter compounded of ந் and எ. 12)

pṉṉi (p. 304) s. (St. பத்னி.) A wife, ம னைவி. (சது.) 2. Wife of a guru, rishi or other sacerdotal person. See பத்தினி. 42)

pā (p. 305) s. Web or warp of a weaver, நெச வுபா. See பாவு. 2. Verse, poetry, poesy as பாட்டு, கவி, யாப்பு. &c. 3. A class of verse embracing five varieties, compared to the four castes, and formerly appropriated to them respectively, and one of a mixed form. 1. வெண்பா, the best, or sacerdotal verse, composed of வெண்சீர் or இயற்சீர் feet, or of both arranged in the வெண்டளை mode. See வெண்பா. also Bab. Gram. p. 79. 2. அகவற்பா or ஆசிரியப்பா, the princely or royal verse formed chiefly of இயற்சீர், and the connexion called ஆசிரி யத்தளை. See ஆசிரியம். 3. கலிப்பா, the mercantile or chetty verse, admitting the வெண்சீர் feet, also two of the இயற்சீர், and two வஞ்சிச்சீர். See கலிப்பா. 4. வஞ்சிப்பா, the agricultural, of வஞ்சிச்சீர் but admitting all the others. 5. மருட்பா, in which வெண்பா and ஆசிரியப்பா are intermingled. The stanza begins with two lines of வெண்பா, and the remainder, not limited, is of the ஆசிரியப்பா.-Note. The first four of the above have each three subdivisions, (called பாலினம்.) viz: தாழிசை, துறை and விருத்தம், to the names of which respectively, the general term, or a contraction, is prefixed, thus. I. வெண்டா ழிசை or வெள்ளொத்தாழிசை. 2. வெண்டுறை. 3. வெளிவிருத்தம். II. அகவற்றாழிசை or ஆசிரியத்தாழி சை. 2. அகவற்றுறை or ஆசிரியத்துறை. 3. அகவ ல்விருத்தம் or ஆசிரியவிருத்தம். III. கலித்தாழிசை. 2. கலித்துறை. 3. கலிவிருத்தம். IV. வஞ்சித்தாழி சை. 2.வஞ்சித்துறை. 3. வஞ்சிவிருத்தம். பாக்கட்ட, inf. To tie the broken threads of the warp. பாக்காநூல், s. Surplus threads in a weaver's chain, in putting it into the loom. பாச்சுருட்ட, inf. To roll up the warp. பாச்சுருட்டி--பாச்சுற்றி, appel. n. A weaver's beam, தறிமரம். பாத்தோய்க்க, inf. To stiffen. [lit. dip.] the warp. பாப்பிணைக்க, inf. To fasten the warp to the thrum. பாமகள்--பாமடந்தை--பாமுதல்வி, s. Sarasvati; as the goddess of poetry and learning, சரஸ்வதி. (p.) பாமாலை, s. An encomium, in poetry, of some personage, கவிமாலை. (p.) பாவலர்--பாவாணர், s. Poets, bards, புலவர். 2. The learned, the literati, கற்றோர். பாவார்க்க--பாவிழைக்க, inf. To warp or wind yarn. பாவாற்றி, appel. n. A weaver's brush. பாவிலேவார்க்க, inf. To varieties or subdivisions of verse. See பா. பாவோட, inf. To run the weaver's warp. 3)
