ālātti (p. 42) s. [in poetry, sometimes contr. to ஆலத்தி.] The ceremony of waving lighted camphor, to avert the blight of the eyes of unlucky persons, on marriage or other special occasions; also in front of the idol, after the procession, before it is taken into the temple. The term is applied both to the light, &c. waved, and the waving--as ஆரதி. ஆலாத்திகாட்ட, inf. To wave the above offering. ஆலாத்தித்தட்டு, s. The salver in which the ஆலாத்தி is waved. 2. One of the decks in a ship. ஆலாத்தியெடுக்க, inf. To take lighted camphor, &c. before the idol and wave it round; also before a newmarried couple, &c. 15) *

irṭci (p. 48) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To preserve, protect, guard, defend, deliver, save, restore, காப்பாற்ற; [ex இரட்சை.] நானவனையிரட்சிக்கப்பார்த்தேன் முடியாமற்போய்வி ட்டது. I endeavored to save him but could not. என்னாலானமட்டுமுன்னையிரட்சிப்பேன். I will protect thee as far as lies in my power. இரட்சித்துவிட, inf. To deliver, rid, set free from misery, peril. இரட்சிப்பு, v. noun. Preserving, protecting, saving, conferring eternal bliss, salvation, காப்பாற்றுகை. 50)

uy (p. 63) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To live as man, beast, or vegetables; to subsist, survive, revive or flourish--as trees, plants, &c., சீவிக்க. 2. (p.) To obtain benefits, privileges, &c.; to be blessed, to be happy, to prosper, flourish, to be relieved from distress, oppression, suffering, &c., உயிர்வாழ. 3. To obtain heavenly bliss, to gain exemption from transmigration, ஈடேற. 4. To escape from dangers, wild beasts, &c., to flee from, தப்ப. உய்கதியால்--உய்தடி, s. A live hedge-stick. உய்தவம், s. Austerities leading to bliss. உய்பயிர், s. Thriving crops, trees, &c. 2. (fig.) A person in thriving circumstances. உய்வனவு, v. noun. [prov.] Flourishing or reviving as a tree, செழிப்பு. 2. Living, subsistence, maintenance, சீவனம். 3. s. Means of attaining eternal bliss, ஈடேற்றம். This word properly must be உய்வு. உய்விக்க, inf. To save alive, cause to live, prosper, flourish, &c. This is the causative of உய். உய்வு--உய்தி, v. noun. Enjoyment of life, prosperity, felicity, உயிர்வா ழ்வு. 2. Bliss, salvation, ஈடேற்றம். 3. Living, life as spoken auspiciously, உயிர்க்கை. ஒருவன்செய்நன்றிகொன்றார்க்குய்தியில்லெனவ றம்பாடின்றே. The divine laws declare that to the ungrateful there is no happiness here or hereafter. Heartiness, energy, earnestness, பிடிவாதம்; [ex உறு, urgent.] உறுதிகொள்ள, inf. To be confirmed. உறுதிசெய்ய--உறுதிபண்ண, inf. To confirm, corroborate, benefit, &c., பலஞ்செய்ய. 2. To execute a title deed, bond, &c.--as a contracting party, உடன்படிக்கையெழுத. 3. To believe firmly, persuade one's self, நிச்சயிக்க. உறுதிசொல்ல, inf. To assure, speak firmly, pledge one's word, &c., திரமாகச்சொல்ல. 2. To inspire hope, to console, நம்பிக்கைசொல்ல. 3. To give good moral advice, admonish, நற்போதனை செய்ய. உறுதிச்சீட்டு--உறுதிப்பத்திரம், s. A bond, a written contract, a title deed. உறுதிச்சுற்றம், s. The principal attendants on a king; they are five, viz.: நட்பாளர், அந்தணாளர், மடைத்தொழிலர், மருத்துவக்கலைஞர், நிமித்திகப்புலவர். உறுதிச்சொல், s. A word of assurance, நிச்சயமொழி. 2. A word of advice, நல்லுபதேசம். 3. An admonition, a warning, கண்டிப்பு. உறுதிபண்ண, inf. To confirm, to corroborate. உறுதிபூசுதல், s. The sacrament of confirmation among the Romanists. உறுதிபெறுதல், v. noun. Obtaining firmness of mind. உறுதிப்பட, inf. To be confirmed, assured, to be firmly established in a course of conduct, திடப்பட. உறுதிப்படுத்த, inf. To confirm in a religious sense, to corroborate, establish, பலப்படுத்த. 2. To make a verbal or written promise, உடன்படிக்கைசெய்ய. உறுதிப்பாடு, s. Firmness, fortitude, decision, திடம். 2. A promise, pledge, assurance. உறுதிப்பொருள், s. The Supreme Being, கடவுள். 2. ēṟu (p. 79) கிறேன், ஏறினேன், வேன், ஏற. v. n. [also used with the impers. terminations.] To rise, rise--as the heavenly bodies-as a kite, &c.; to emerge, இவர. 2. To get upon, mount, to ride a horse, a vehicle, வாகனமேற. 3. To enter, to penetrate--as a nail, a probe, a thorn; as thoughts or advice into the mind, &c., தைக்க. 4. To embark, to get into a boat or vessel, to be laden--as cargo, கப்பலேற. 5. To be elevated, high, beyond, &c.; to exceed mediocrity, to be excessive, redundant, superfluous, உயர. 6. To exceed in number, weight, measure, to rise in price, quality, &c., தொகைமுதலியவதிகரிக்க. 7. To pervade, to be diffused through the blood--as poison, நஞ்சேற. ஏறுகாலிறங்குகால்பார்க்க. To trace the track of an animal up and down a hill, to or from the water, &c.--as a hunter. குதிரையேறிவந்தான். He came on horseback. பயிரேறிவிட்டது. The corn is grown up. சொன்னதுமனதிலேறவில்லை. It did not enter his mind, he did not take notice of what was said. மாவேறமலையேறும். Small sums make a large total, lit. mountains are formed from atoms. இந்தத்தோணியிலெவ்வளவேறும். What is the tonnage of this dhoney? ஏற. [inf. of ஏறு, used adverbially.] High, much more, exceeding, மிக. அரைப்படிக்கேறக்கொடு. Give me more than half a measure. இதேறப்பெறும். This is worth more. விலையேறப்பெற்றது. That which is obtained at a high price. 2. That which is valuable, precious. ஏறக்கட்ட, inf. To build up, to edify, உயரக்கட்ட. 2. To refuse selling that the price may be increased, தானிய மேறக்கட்ட. 3. To be restrained, or to withhold as the clouds from raining, or a cow from giving milk, மழைமுதலியபெய் யாதிருக்க. 4. [local.] To collect scattered grain in a heap, இறைந்ததானியத்தைக்கூட்டிச் சேர்க்க. வானம்மழையேறக்கட்டிவிட்டது. The heaven has withheld the rain. ஏறக்கட்டித்தூக்க, inf. To hang up a thing. 2. To hang one up by the hands--as a school boy, a slave, &c., in order to flog him. ஏறக்குறைய--ஏறத்தாழ, s. More or less, about right, nearly. ஏறக்குறையப்பேச. to insult, to abuse. நூறுபேருக்கேறக்குறைய. About one-hundred persons. ஏறச்செலவழிக்க, inf. To spend extravagantly. ஏறவாங்க, inf. To buy cheaper, நயமாகவாங்க. 2. to be drawn up, distorted--as the neck by cold, &c., கழுத்தேற வாங்க. ஏறவிட, inf. To keep off a vessel from shore, மரக்கலத்தைக்கரைக்குத்தூரவிட. 2. To keep near to the wind--as a vessel, காற்றுமுகமாய்விட. 3. To turn a vessel to the shore, கரைசேரவிட. ஏறவிட்டேணியைவாங்கினதுபோல். Like removing the ladder a person has ascended. ஏறவிறங்கப்பார்க்க, inf. To stare at one, to gaze at one from head to foot, கேசாதிபாதமீறாகப்பார்க்க. நடந்தேற, inf. To be accomplished, to succeed. கரையேற, inf. To land, disembark. 2. To attain the shores of final salvation. ஏறாங்கடைசி, s. [prop. ஏறுகடை.] The very end, அறமுடிவு. ஏறாமேடு, s. A height which one cannot reach, or to which water cannot rise, உயர்ந்தமேடு. 2. An enterprise above one's power, செய்யக்கூடாதகாரியம். 3. An inconvenient engagement, unsuitable contract, &c.--as an unequal marriage, ஒவ்வாமை-- in use, ஏறாங்கடை ஏறிக்கொள்ள, inf. To establish one's self in a high office, &c., to arrive at a high state or sanctity, or to attain a higher degree in religion. See நிலை or பாதம். சாதியிலேயேறிக்கொண்டான். [prov.] He has risen in caste by marrying in a higher family (spoken sarcastically). ஏறிட, inf. To stick into, to cause to enter, to pierce, புகப்பண்ண. 2. To place, set up, fix, ஏற்ற. வில்லைவளைத்துநாணேறிட்டு. Bending the bow and fixing on the bowstring. பருவிற்சலாகையையேறிட்டான். He introduced the probe into the sore. ஏறிட்டுப்பார்க்க, inf. To look up. 2. To attend to one when speaking. 3. To look or stare at a person. என்னையேறிட்டுப்பார்க்கவில்லை. He did not even cast a look at me, he took no notice of me. Amongst the Hindus it is not deemed respectful to look at a superior in the face; even when addressing him or receiving his directions. ஏறுகடை, s. The very end, the extremity, முடிவானகடை. ஏறுகுதிரை, s. A riding horse. ஏறுக்குமாறு--ஏறுமாறு, s. Improper, unruly, or vicious behavior, தாறுமாறு. ஏறுசலாகை, s. [prov.] In building, a large lath passing through the ends of rafters, கைமரங்கோக்குஞ்சலாகை. ஏறுதுறை, s. A port, place of embarkation, exportation, &c., துறைமுகம். ஏறுநெற்றி, s. A high forehead (regarded as a fortunate mark in a man, but unlucky in a female--as calculated to cause an untimely death to her husband), also a mark of a masculine, imperious and irrascible temper, அகன்ற நெற்றி. ஏறுபடி, s. An extra batta or allowance above the stated proportion, to a servant, for expenditure in the temple, for an entertainment, &c., அதிகப்படி. ஏறுபெட்டி, s. [prov.] A toddydrawer's basket for carrying toddy, கள் ளேறுபெட்டி. ஏறுபொழுது, s. The sun as it rises toward the meridian. ஏறுமிராசி, s. The constellation in the sun's path from the equator to the northern solstitial point, உச்சத்திற்கேறு மிராசி. See இறங்குமிராசி. ஏறுவட்டம், s. The difference, less or more than sixty Indian hours, in the passage of the moon through any of the asterisms, also the difference in the கர ணம் and யோகம் as affected thereby, நட் சத்திரமுதலியனநாழிகையேறுமுறை. 2. In the division of the inheritance of lands, trades, &c., the excess above or the deficiency in equal shares, பங்கினளவுக்கதிகமா னநிலமுதலியன. ஏறுவால், s. A long tail--a good sign in certain animals, நீண்டவால். பசுஏறுவாலுமெருதுகூழைவாலும். A long tail for a cow and a short one for a bull are desirable. ஏறுவெய்யில். Increasing heat or sunshine as the sun rises towards the meridian, காலைவெய்யில்--opp. இறங்குவெய் யில். ஏறெடுக்க, inf. To lift up the head, eyes, &c., மேலெடுக்க. 82)

oṉṟu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஒன்றினேன், வேன், ஒன்ற. v. n. To unite, coalesce, knit or grow together--as broken parts, two trees, &c.; to become one, to join, combine, இணைய. 2. To be engaged, be intent, &c. on an object, ஒன்றுபட. 3. To agree, suit, be agreeable, பொருந்த. 4. To copulate, புணர. ஒன்றவில்லை. It is not convenient. 2. They are not fit. 3. (They) (the things or parts) are not united, not joined well, &c. தேகத்தொன்றுநோய். Disease which befalls the body. (வைராக்கிய.) ஊழொன்றியிருப்பின். If destiny favor-ஒன்றப்பார்க்க, inf. To unite severed parts--as a magician by looking at them, lit. to look them into one, பொ ருந்தப்பார்க்க. 2. To join things to see if they fit or agree--as machinery, இசைக்க. ஒன்றாதவஞ்சித்தளை, s. See தளை. ஒன்றார்--ஒன்னாதார்--ஒன்னார், s. Foes, unfriendly persons. (p.) ஒன்றுகுடி, s. A family or person living in another's house, garden, &c. See ஒட்டுக்குடி and ஒதுக்குக்குடி. ஒன்றுகூட்டு, s. Concord, harmony, living on terms of friendship, ஒரு கூட்டு. ஒன்றுகூட்டாயிருக்க, inf. To be closely united, be in harmony, &c. ஒன்றுநர், s. Friends, relations, ந ண்பர். (p.) ஓ. The eleventh vowel, ஓகாரம். 2. A particle, இடைச்சொல். It has various uses; in நன்னூல், eight different meanings are given to it. (a) ஒழியிசை, a mark of ellipsis denoting the omission of a counter-part to what is expressed--as கொள லோகொண்டான், true he has obtained his object (but he will not prosper by it). (b) வினா, interrogatives--as சாத்தனோவந்தான், is it Sattan that came? (c) சிறப்பு, speciality, particularity, &c., an interjection of surprise. This is two-fold. 1. உயர்வுசிறப் பு, relating to objects of superiority, preeminence, &c.--as ஓஒ பெரியன், heigh day! he is an illustrious person. 2. இழிவுசிறப்பு, relating to objects of inferiority, baseness, &c.--as ஓஒ கொடியன், Oh! he is a cruel wretch. (d) எதிர்மறை, negation--as யானோ செய்வேன், will I do it? implying I will not. (e) தெரிநிலை, ascertainment, clear perception, appeal to the hearer, &c.-as ஆணோஅதுவுமன்றுபெண்ணோஅதுவுமன்று, it is neither male nor female. (f) கழிவு, bereavement, an interjection of pity--as ஓஒ தமக் கோருறுதியுணராரோ, alas, alas, they have found no way of salvation. (g) அசைநிலை, expletive--as காணியவம்மினோ, come let us see. (h) பிரிநிலை, distinguishing, marking-as அவனோகொண்டான், it was he who bought it. In addition to these it also serves to express doubt--as நீனிறமுகிலோபசியசைவல மோநெடுந்திரைகொழித்ததெள்ளறலோ, is the hair of the damsel analogous to the blue clouds, to the green moss, or the black sand on the shore drifted by the billows (நைட); அதென்னவோதெரியாது, What that can be I know not.

kṭai (p. 88) s. End, extremity, termination, conclusion, முடிவு. 2. A shop, bazaar, market, அங்காடி. 3. (p.) Inferiority, baseness, meanness, lowness, the least, lowest, or worst kind, &c., கீழ்மை. 4. Way, வழி. 5. Termination of a particle, வினையெச்சவி குதி. 6. Place, room, இடம். 7. A form of the seventh case used also with verbs, to express if, when, after, &c., ஏழனுருபு. 8. A door, a gate-way, வாயில். 9. The outer gate, புறவாயில். 1. The clasp or other fastening of a neck-ornament, பணிப்பூட்டு. 11. Side, பக்கம். நீத்தக்கடை. If he leave-- (குறள்.) ஈதலியையாக்கடை. If it be not possible to bestow-நள்ளிமுதற்கிள்ளிகடையாக. From Nalli to Killi (reigned sixty-four kings called சோழர்). நாயிற்கடையாநாயேனை. Me who am the most degraded of dogs-அவன்கடைச்சென்றான். He approached him. கடைகட்ட, inf. To close a shop, கடைசாத்த. 2. To suspend a work, to discontinue, to make an end of--spoken diminutively. கடைகாப்பாளர்--கடைகாவலர், s. Door-keepers, porters, வாயில்காப்போர். கடைகெட்டவன், s. [vul.] An abandoned person, a wretch, முழுதுங்கெட் டவன். கடைக்கண், s. The outside corner of the eye, கட்கடை. 2. A benign look, கடாட்சம். கடைக்கண்கிடைக்கவேண்டும். I am anxious to get a propitious look, glance of your eye. கடைக்கண்ணாற்பார்க்க, inf. To glance, look sidewise. 2. To cast a propitious or benignant look. கடைக்கண்பார்வை, v. noun. A side look, a glance. 2. A propitious or benignant look, approbation, a token of favor. கடைக்கனல்--கடையனல், s. The final deluge-fire, ஊழித்தீ. கடைக்காப்பு, s. To effect, to produce a result--as the actions of a former birth are supposed to do, வினைப் பயனுறுவிக்க. 2. To unite man and wife, or a male and female of the brute creation, as former deeds are imagined to do. கடைக்கூழை, s. A species of rhyme, ஓர்தொடை. 2. The rear division of an army, படைப்பின்னணி. See கூழை. கடைக்கொள்ளி, s. A fire-brand burnt to the end, குறைக்கொள்ளி. கடைக்கோடி, s. [vul.] The very extremity, the utmost limit, ஈறு. கடைசால், s. [prov.] The finishing of a business, முடிவு. 2. Stern of a vessel--also written கடையால். கடைசாலொதுக்க, inf. To finish a business in hand. கடைச்சங்கம், s. The third and last of the ancient Madura colleges consisting of forty-nine literati, இறுதிச்சங் கம். கடைச்சரக்கு, s. Curry stuff, spices, &c., drugs, medicines, &c., sold in the bazaar, கடையில்விற்கப்படுஞ்சரக்கு. கடைச்சன், s. The youngest son, கடைப்பிள்ளை. கடைஞர், s. The laboring caste in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். கடைதலைப்பூட்டு, s. An inverted construction in poetry, by which the last word in a verse is connected with the first, விற்பூட்டுப்பொருள்கோள். கடைதிறப்பு, v. noun. Opening a door. In erotics, the section which relates to an application made for the opening of a door to a coming or expected lover; or in war poems, to a warrior returning in triumph after a victory, கதவுதிறக்கை. (p.) கடைத்தடம், s. Gate-way, வாயில். (p.) கடைத்தரம், s. The last class, the lowest or worst kind, கீழ்த்தரம். கடைத்தலை--கடைத்தலைவாயில்-கடைத்தலைவாய்தல், s. The outer gate, the outer court or yard, தலைவாயில். கடைத்தெரு, s. A market-street, a bazaar, கடைவீதி. கடைத்தேற, inf. [prop. கடத்தேற.] To be saved, to escape all afflictions. கடைத்தேற்றம், s. [prop. கடத்தேற் றம்.] Salvation. கடைநாள்--கடைமீன், s. The twenty-seventh lunar asterism, இரேவதி. (p.) கடைநிலை, s. A poem uttered by holy persons coming from a distance to the hero of the poem at the door of whose residence they stand and desire the door-keeper to inform his master of their arrival, ஓர்பிரபந்தம். (See பிரபந்தம்.) 2. An outside door, புறவாயில். (நீதிநெறி.) 3. The last letter of a word or verse, ஈற்றெழுத்து. (p.) கடைநிலைத்தீபகம், s. A word at the end of a sentence understood in other parts--one of the தீவகம். கடைநிலையளபெடை, s. The rhyme in which the last letter of each verse is lengthened. கடைநிலையெழுத்து, s. [in grammar.] Letters proper to end a word, இறுதிநிலை. கடைபோக, inf. To end, terminate, conclude, முடிய. 2. To be fulfilled, நிறைவேற. கடைபோட--கடைவைக்க, inf. To set up a shop, open a shop. கடைப்பட, inf. To be inferior, below mediocrity, to be last in quality or estimation, degree or order, இழிவாக. 2. To be practicable, capable of completion, நிறைவேற. என்னாலிதுகடைப்படாது. This will not be completed by me. கடைப்பாடு, s. Determination, தீர் மானிப்பு. 2. Inferiority, baseness, இழிவு. கடைப்பந்தி, s. The lower end of a dining table or of a row of guests, கடைசிப்பந்தி. கடைப்பிடி, s. Bearing in mind, remembering, ஞாபகம். 2. Indelible impressions of gratitude for benefits received, of duties to be performed, of the importance of virtue and religion, மறவா மை. 3. Certainty, ascertainment, established truth, தேற்றம். 4. Firm belief in the essentials of religion serving as the hope and support of the mind in reference to a future state, the last grasp of the soul, உறுதி. 5. Firm determination, firm resolve, either for good or evil, கரும முடிக்குந்துணிவு. 6. Doctrines, truth firmly believed as necessary to salvation, உறுதி யானகொள்கை. கடைப்பிடிக்க, inf. To ascertain clearly, to know certainly, தெளிய. 2. To determine, resolve firmly, be decided in purpose either in a good or evil course, துணிய. 3. To remember, to bear in mind benefits, to be grateful, &c., to be deeply sensible of one's obligations for favor received, மறவாமலிருக்க. 4. To have an abiding sense of the importance of virtue and religion, சன்மார்க்கத்திலுறுதியாயி ருக்க. 5. To have an unwavering faith in the essentials of religion, to embrace or take firm hold of religious instructions, &c., தேவபத்தியிலுறுதியாயிருக்க. 6. To grasp, resort to--as the soul for its last refuge, பற்ற. 7. To provide, be provident, be economical, வீண்செலவுசெய்யாது வைக்க. (p.) கதவிலரேதற்சார்ந்தார்வண்ணங்கடைப்பிடியாதார். Unkind are they who are forgetful of the situation of their friends. (காரிகையுரை.) மற்றதன்கள்ளங்கடைப்பிடித்தனன்று. It is important to have an abiding sense of the wiles of Yama. வாழ்க்கைக்குவேண்டும்பொருளறிந்துகடைப்பிடி த்தலும். Knowing and duly providing all things necessary for her household-(குறளுரை.) நன்மைகடைப்பிடி. Persevere in good works. (ஔவை). கடைப்பிறப்பு, s. The meanest species of birth in any class of beings, இழிந்தபிறப்பு. கடைப்புணர்முரண்--கடைமுரண், s. A species of rhyme when the last foot of every line is of opposite meaning, ஓர்தொடை. கடைப்புணர்வு--கடைப்பூட்டு, s. [in jewelry.] Clasp, hasp, அணியின்கடைப் புணர்வு. கடைப்புத்தி, s. [prov.] Stupidity, இழிந்தபுத்தி. 2. A piece of folly, பின்புத்தி. கடைப்போக்கு, s. The flood-gate of tank. கடைமடக்கு, s. [in rhetoric.] Continued recurrence of the same words at the end of each line through a stanza, but with different meanings, சொல்லணி யிலொன்று. See மடக்கு. கடைமுறை, s. The last time, eventually, கடைசிமுறை. (நீதிநெறி. 48.) கடைமோனை--கடையாகுமோனை, s. (See மோனை.) A rhyme when the first letter of the last foot of every line is the same, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையயல், s. [in grammar.] The penultimate, ஈற்றயல். (p.) கடையர், s. (fem. கடைசியர்--க டைச்சியர்.) Laboring classes in agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். (p.) கடையழிய, inf. To be afflicted with a painful and lingering disease, to suffer extremely, வருந்த. 2. To be distressed with poverty, வறுமையுற. 3. To degenerate, கேடுற. கடையனல், s. The fire by which the world will finally be consumed. கடையன், s. A man of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோன். கடையாகெதுகை, s. A rhyme, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையாட்டம், s. [prov.] Lingering in disease, excessive suffering from disease, வருத்தம். 2. Vexation, teasing, imminence, trouble, annoyance, உலைவு, lit. mean work. கடையாட்டப்பட, inf. To drudge, to be employed in mean work. 2. To linger in disease, suffer exceedingly, வ ருந்த. 3. To be vexed. harassed. &c.-as a nurse by troublesome children, உ லைய. கடையாணி, s. A linch-pin, அச் சாணி. 2. A peg or pin used to keep a tenon in a mortise, or for any similar purpose, பூட்டாணி. கடையாந்தரம்--கடையீறு, s. [vul.] The very last, the extremity, &c.--as கடைசி. கடையாயார், s. Persons of the lowest rank, இழிந்தோர். கடையால், s. Stern of a vessel, தோணியின்பிற்புறம். See கடைசால், usage. கடையிணைமுரண், s. A rhyme when the last two feet of a line are of opposite meanings, ஓர்தொடை. (p.) கடையிணைமோனை, s. A consonance of the first letters in the last two feet of each line in a verse. (p.) கடையீடு, s. Land of the poorest quality, கடைத்தரமானநிலம். கடையுணி, s. [prov.] A mean fellow who eats what he can beg or pick up-- a worthless being, இழிந்தோன். கடையுண்ண, inf. [prov.] To linger in disease, வருத்தப்பட. 2. To be stinted or weak in growth--as a child, நசுங்க. 3. To be neglected, abused, &c.-- as a book, a utensil, &c.; in this meaning it is a term of displeasure, இகழப்பட. கடையுவா, s. The full moon, பௌரணை. (p.) கடையெழுஞ்சனி, s. The twelfth asterism in which Saturn is considered malignant in his influence, உத்திரம். See சனி. கடைவழி, s. Final salvation, the last path. கடைவழிக்குதவும். It will avail for the salvation of the soul. காதற்றஊசியும்வாராதுகாணுங்கடைவழிக்கே. Be assured that even an eyeless needle will not accompany you in that sad hour. கடைவளர, inf. To be enlarged-said of the genitals of a cow, &c., before yeaning, ஈனுங்காலத்திற்குறிவிரிய. கடைவள்ளல், s. The last of the third class of liberal men--he who bestows charity from motives of ostentation, கேட்டபின்கொடுப்போன். கடைவாய், s. The corner or extremities of the mouth, வாயின்கடை. கடைவாய்நக்கி, s. A great miser, உலுத்தன், lit. he who licks the corners of his mouth. கடைவாய்ப்பல், s. The double teeth, the grinders, the back teeth. கடைவாய்வழிய, inf. To drivel at the corners of the mouth--as old people or persons asleep, வாய்நீரொழுக. கடைவிரிக்க, inf. To spread out goods for sale in a shop or market, கடைதிறக்க. கடைவீதி, s. A market-street. கடைவைக்க, inf. To place goods for sale in a shop or bazaar. 2. To open a shop on an auspicious day after the new-year, கடைதிறக்க. பலசரக்குக்கடை, s. A shop where commodities of various kinds are sold. மளிகைக்கடை, s. A wholesale ware-house. காசுக்கடை, s. An exchange. அடிக்கடை, s. The first shop in a market-street. மருந்துக்கடை, s. An apothecary's shop. கசாய்க்கடை, s. (Tel.) A butcher's shop. சாராயக்கடை, s. An arrack shop. கீரைக்கடை, s. A green-grocer's shop. சவுளிக்கடை, s. A cloth-merchant's shop. விரற்கடை, s. karuṭaṉ (p. 96) s. The Brahmany kite, கலுழன். 2. The bird and vehicle of Vishnu. He is generally represented as a being something between a man and a bird, and considered to be sovereign of the feathered race; he is the son of Kasyapa and Vinata and the younger brother of Aruns, விட்டு ணுவாகனம், Falco pondischerianus. Wils. p. 283. GARUDA. கருடகம்பம், s. A species of lamp used by one of the Vaishnava sects at religious festivals. கருடகேதனன்-கருடக்கொடியோ ன்--கருடத்துவசன், s. Vishnu, விட்டுணு, whose flag is the kite. Wils. p. 283. GARUDATHVAJA. கருடக்கல்--கருடப்பச்சைக்கல்-கருடபட்சிக்கல் s. A kind of medicinal stone or mineral taken for the bite of a snake or put on the wound with the repetition of incantations, ஓர்கல். கருடக்கொடி, s. A flag in which the picture of a kite is drawn, கருடத்துவ சம். 2. A plant called பெருமருந்து, Aristolochia Indica. 3. Another plant called குறிஞ்சா, Gymnema sylvestra. கருடக்கொவ்வை--கருடத்தொண் டை, s. A climbing plant, ஓர்கொடி Clitoria, L. கருடசாரம், s. Sea salt, சிந்துல வணம். கருடதரிசனம், s. The worship of the kite as the representative of Vishnu on special days; the sight of the bird at such seasons is deemed very auspicious, கருடனைத்தரிசிக்கை. கருடதிசை, s. East, கீழ்த்திசை-used in astrology. கருடத்தியானம், s. Devotion addressed by the enchanter to the god Garuda in case of venomous bites, கருட னைத்தியானிக்கை. கருடபஞ்சாக்கரம், s. An incantation of five letters sacred to Garuda. கருடபாடாணம்--கருடபாஷாண ம், s. A species of arsenic. கருடபார்வை, s. A squint eye, மாறுபார்வை. 2. [prov.] An expressive, penetrating look. கருடவாகனன், s. A Vishnu regarded mounted on Garuda. கருடவித்தை, s. Incantations, &c., connected with Garuda. கருடற்கண்ணன், s. [as புதன்.] The elder brother of கருடன் and son of சந்திரன். (சது.) கருடன்கிழங்கு, s. A kind of root. கருடன்தாய், s. The same as விநதை. கருடாஞ்சனம், s. Eye-salve for a person bitten by a snake, or for cases of apoplexy, விஷந்தீர்க்கக்கண்ணிலிடுமருந்து. ஆகாசகருடன், s. A climbing plant whose root resembles the head of a Brahmany kite, கொல்லன்்கோவை, Bryonia epigea. 132)

klikkm (p. 96) s. A very pungent eye-salve applied as a stimulant in apoplectic stupor or apathy of the system, கண்ணிலிடு மருந்து. (c.). கலிக்கம்போட--கலிக்கமிட, inf. To apply pungent eye-salve. பூதகலிக்கம், s. A kind of collyrium used by magicians to drive away evil spirits from persons said to be possessed by them. அஞ்சனக்கலிக்கம், s. A magic ointment rubbed on the eyes, or palms of one who wishes to discover any thing lost. 243) *

kāṇikkai (p. 103) s. A voluntary oblation, commonly in money, gold, fruits, &c. set before an idol to obtain favor, a sacrifice, தட்சணை. 2. A present to a guru or other great person, பாதகாணிக்கை. காணிக்கைகொடுக்க, inf. To present an oblation. காணிக்கைத்தட்டு, s. A salver for receiving gifts. காணிக்கைப்பொருள், s. A famous medicinal oil compounded of castor, margosa and rape-seed oils. கூட்டுக்கால்கட்ட, inf. To tie a beast's forelegs together. கூட்டாகுழப்பம், s. koḷ (p. 147) --கொள்ளு, கிறேன், கொண் டேன், வேன், கொள்ள, v a. To take, receive with the hand, வாங்கிக்கொள்ள. 2. To contain, hold, comprehend, have, comprise, embrace, அடக்கிக்கொள்ள. 3. To buy, purchase, விலைக்குக்கொள்ள. 4. To accept, approve of, admit, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. To take a wife, to marry, பெண்கொள்ள. 6. To take --as food, medicine, sleep, rest, &c., உணவு முதலியகொள்ள. 7. To conceive--as in the womb, in the mind or in the heart. 8. To get, to acquire, பெற்றுக்கொள்ள. 9. v. n. To be contained in, அடங்க. As an auxiliary to other verbs, கொள் denotes, continuation, certainly, &c., of the action, and that the fruit of it reverts to the agent-as படித்துக்கொள்ளுகிறான். He continues to study, குதிரையைவாங்கிக்கொண்டேன். I bought a horse for myself. The verb is generally found in composition with other words --as வாங்கிக்கொள்ள, பெண்கொள்ள, உட்கொள்ள, &c., and very rarely in the personal finite forms in common usage, except in the third meaning. கொள்வாருமில்லைகொடுப்பாருமில்லை.... There are none who receive, none who give. கொண்டிருந்துகுலம்பேசுகிறதா? Would it be proper to twit a family after you have taken a wife from it? கொண்டான், s. A husband, புருஷன். 2. A play as கொண்டல். See under கொண் டு, for other words. கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry, to convey; to take away. கொள்க, [obtative.] May take, accept, or may uderstand. உமதுசித்தத்தின்படிகொள்க. You may take it as you please. கொள்கலம், s. A vessel, a salver, a dish; a receptacle for sandal-paste, or other ointments, or for ornaments, &c., சாந்துமுதலியபெய்கலம். 2. A cup of palm leaf, or bamboo to eat from, பிழர. (சது.) A beggar's dish, இரப்போர்கலம். கொள்கை, v. noun. The act of taking, getting, &c. See, கொள், v. 2. Quality, nature, habit, state, குணம். 3. Liking, fondness, regard, attachment, intimacy, சினேகம். 4. Opinions, tenets, belief, கோ ட்பாடு. 5. Knowledge, instruction, அறிவு. அவருக்குமிவருக்குமிகுந்தகொள்கை. [prov.] They two are very intimate. கிழவியிவனோடேமிகுந்தகொள்கையாயிருக்கிறாள். The old woman is very fond of him. கொள்கொம்பு, s. A prop supporting vines. (R.) கொள்வனை--கொள்வனவு--கொள்வினை, v. noun. Buying, borrowing; taking receiving வியாபாரக்கொள்ளுகை. 2. Marrying a wife, பெண்கொள்ளுகை. கொள்வனைகொடுப்பனை, v. noun. Borrowing and lending. 2. Giving and receiving in marriage. 3. [vul. loc.] Taking, receiving; buying, borrowing, கொள்ளுகை. கொள்விலை--கொள்கிரயம், s. The first or prime cost, the sum paid for a thing exclusive of profit, &c., கொண்டவிலை. 2. [prov.] Purchase, purchased land or property, விலைக்குக்கொண்டது. 3. One of the three species of real property. See சீதனம் and பிதிரார்ச்சிதம். கொள்விலைக்காணி, s. [prov.] Land attained by purchase, as distinguished from lands by dowry and inheritance. கொள்விலைக்காரன், s. The purchaser of land, &c. கொள்வோன், s. One who buys, or one who accepts any thing. 2. (நன்.) a pupil, student, learner, கற்போன். கொள்ள, [adverbially.] While, when-as நான்வரக்கொள்ள, while I was coming. 2.
