Moral or religious duty, virtue; the performance of good works according to the shasters--including justice, hospitality, liberality, &c., also what is prescribed as the duty to be practised by each particular caste. Compare தருமம். The thirty-two acts of charity are the following; viz.: 1. ஆதுலர்க்குச்சாலை, building houses for the poor. 2. ஓதுவார்க் குணவு, giving maintenance and education. 3. அறுசமயத்தார்க்குண்டி, feeding persons of either of the six religious sects. 4. பசுவுக்கு வாயுறை, feeding cows. 5. சிறைச்சோறு, feeding prisoners. 6. ஐயம், giving alms. 7. தின் பண்டநல்கல், providing for travellers. 8. அறவைச்சோறு, feeding the destitute. 9. மகப் பெறுவித்தல், rendering assistance in childbirth. 1. மகவுவளர்த்தல், nourishing children. 11. மகப்பால்வார்த்தல், giving milk to infants. 12. அறவைப்பிணஞ்சுடுதல், burning or burying the poor. 13. அறவைத்தூரியம், furnishing clothes to the destitute. 14. சுண்ணம், giving chunam to use with betel. 15. நோய்மருந்து, giving medicine to the sick. 16. வண்ணார், paying for washing the clothes of the poor. 17. நாவிதர், the same for shaving. 18. கண்ணாடி, giving a looking glass. 19. காதோலை, giving cadjan or palmyra leaves to women for their ears. 2. கண்மருந்து, giving black paint to women for the eyes. 21. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், giving oil for the head. 22. பெண்போகம், aid to enjoy a woman. 23. பிறர்துயர்காத்தல், redressing injuries. 24. தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல், keeping water pandals to give drink to the thirsty. 25. மடம், erecting inns or buildings for the reception of Brahmans, pilgrims, &c. 26. தடம், making tanks. 27. சோலை, planting topes, groves, &c. 28. ஆவுரிஞ்சுதறி, erecting stakes at which cows may rub themselves. 29. விலங்கிற்குணவு, feeding all kinds of animals. 3. ஏறுவிடுதல், giving a bull for covering a cow. 31. விலைகொடுத்துயிர்காத்தல், giving money to save life. 32. கன்னிகாதானம், giving assistance towards marriage. (p.) அறஞ்செயவிரும்பு. Desire to do charity. அறக்காடு, s. A desert place for burning the dead, சுடுகாடு. அறக்கொடியோன், s. God; He whose banner is charity, கடவுள். அறங்கடை--அறன்கடை, s. Sin, what is opposed to virtue; nonconformity to the shasters, பாவம். அறங்கடையிற்செல்லார். They who will not enter in the way of vice. அறச்சாலை, s. An alms-house, a hall or room where the thirty-two acts of charity are practised. அறச்செல்வி--அறத்தின்மூர்த்தி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி, famous for alms-giving. 2. A name of தருமதேவதை. அறத்தின்மைந்தன்--அறன்மகன், s. The elder of the five Pandavas. அறத்துப்பால்--அறப்பால், s. A section of the book குறள், which treats of அறம். அறத்துறுப்பு, s. The attributes or constituent parts of charity or virtue, including dispositions and actions. Eight are given; viz.: 1. ஐயப்படாமை, being void of doubt or scepticism. 2. விருப் பின்மை, freedom from covetousness or of inordinate desire for any supposed good. 3. வெறுப்பின்மை, freedom from disgust. 4. மயக்கமின்மை, being void of perplexity. 5. பழியை நீக்கல், avoiding reproaches, being void of censoriousness. 6. அழிந்தோ ரைநிறுத்தல், relieving the distressed or ruined. 7. அறம்விளக்கல், bringing into light the nature of benefaction and expounding it. 8. பேரன்புடைமை, the possession of abundant love. அறத்தைக்காப்போன், s. The god ஐயன். அறநிலை, s. The practice of virtue, a virtuous state or condition, தருமம். 2. One of the eight kinds of marriage --as பிரமமணம். See மணம். அறநிலைப்பொருள், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the collection of revenues justly. 2. Wealth gotten by continuance in a proper course of duty and by industry. அறநிலையறம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--the duty of a king to preserve his subjects from breaking the rules of the respective castes. அறநிலையின்பம், s. One of the six அரசியல்--pleasure from a virtuous course; marrying a virgin of proper age, caste and good manners (including conduct prescribed by the Shasters) and of good disposition. அறநெறி, s. The path of virtue. அறப்புறம், s. A place for the practice of virtuous actions. (See அறச்சாலை.) 2. A hall for learning or reciting the Vedas. அறவர்--அறவோர், s. The virtuous, those celebrated for charity and other good deeds, தருமநெறியோர். 2. Ascetics, துற வோர். 3. Brahmans, பார்ப்பார். 4. Sages, முனிவர். அறவன், s. Buddha, புத்தன். அறவாழி, s. The sea of virtue. அறவாழியந்தணன், s. Siva. 2. Vishnu. 3. Argha. அறவாழியந்தணன்றாள் சேர்ந்தார்க்கல்லாற் பிறவா ழிநீந்தலரிது. It is very difficult to swim and escape from the sea of vice, except for those who worship at the feet of him who is the sea of virtue. அறவாழிவேந்தன், s. God, கட வுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். அறவோன், s. A charitable man. 2. A sage, an anchorite. 3. A Brahman. 4. Argha. இல்லறம், s. Domestic life. துறவறம், s. Religious or ascetic life. ஈரறம், s. The two species of life above-mentioned. 47)

iṉi (p. 57) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To be sweet, delicious, savory, &c., to become sweet to the taste, தித்திக்க. 2. To be harmoniously pleasant to the ear, செவிக்கி னிதாக. 3. To be on terms of friendship and intimacy, இனியநட்பாக. 4. To have peculiar relish or love in or for any thing, practice, &c., ஒன்றினிடத்திலினிப்புக்கொள்ள. (c.) இனிக்கச்சொன்னான். He spoke sweetly, so as to please, to win, to fascinate, &c. இனிச்சபண்டம், s. [prop. இனித் தபண்டம்.] Confectionaries. இனிப்பு, v. noun. Sweet, sweetness, deliciousness, pleasantness, agreeableness, &c., இனிமை. வியாபாரத்திலேயவனுக்கினிப்புக்கொண்டது.... He has great pleasure in trade, he has found great profit in it. அவனுக்குமிவனுக்குமினிப்புக்கொண்டது..... These persons are very intimate. இனிப்புக்காட்ட, inf. To be sweet, melodious, delicious, இனிமையைத் தர. 2. To please one, allure, gratify, தித்திப்புக்காட்ட. இனிப்புத்தட்ட, inf. To be sweet to the taste, உருசிதட்ட. 2. To have a relish or desire for a thing, to smack, ஆசையுண்டாக. 47)

I endeavored to save him but could not. என்னாலானமட்டுமுன்னையிரட்சிப்பேன். I will protect thee as far as lies in my power. இரட்சித்துவிட, inf. To deliver, rid, set free from misery, peril. இரட்சிப்பு, v. noun. Preserving, protecting, saving, conferring eternal bliss, salvation, காப்பாற்றுகை. 50)

iruḷ (p. 51) s. Darkness, obscurity, அந் தகாரம். 2. A dark color, black, blackness, கறுப்பு. 3. (p.) Ignorance, mental delusion, stupor, உன்மத்தம். 4. An elephant, யானை. 5. Hell, நரகம். ஓவென்ற இருளாயிருக்கின்றது. There is total, absolute darkness. இந்தவீடிருளடைந்துகிடக்கிறது. This house is become dark; i. e. ruined. இருட்படலம், s. Wide-spread darkness. இருட்பரப்பு, s. I have not the means to do so much. வினைக்கீடாகவனுபவமுண்டாம். Enjoyments and sufferings will accord with the deeds done within the periods of former births. அதற்கீடாகவிதுகொடுக்கிறேன். I give this for or instead of that. அவளுக்கவனீடல்ல. He is not a suitable match for her. ஈடழிய, inf. To suffer the loss of power, dignity, wealth, &c., to become poor, பெருமைகுன்ற. ஈடழிவு, v. noun. Loss of power, property, dignity, &c., சீர்கேடு. ஈடன், s. A strong, competent, wealthy man, பெருமையுடையோன். ஈடன்பாடஞ்சான். A wealthy man will not fear losses. ஈடாட, inf. To compete with another, நேர்நிற்க. 2. [prov.] To be loose--as a tooth, a nail, the spokes of a wheel, to joggle, உழல. ஈடாட்டம், v. noun. Competing or matching with another. 2. Pecuniary ability, the free use of money--as by a rich merchant, கொடுக்கல்வாங்கல். 3. Being loose--as a nail, &c., உழலுகை. ஈடுகட்ட--ஈடுபண்ண, inf. To give security, பிணைகொடுக்க. 2. To make amends, restitution, reprisals, &c., to identify, ஈடுசெய்ய. ஈடுகொடுக்க--ஈடுசெலுத்த, inf. To reward, give an equivalent, to content, பதிலளிக்க. 2. To bear, tolerate, endure, yield, &c., ஈடுகட்ட. அவனுக்கீடுகொடுக்கமுடியாது. It is impossible to give him satisfaction. வீடுபலக்கக்கட்டினாற்புயலுக்குமீடுகொடுக்கும். If the house be strongly built, it will endure the storm. அவனுக்கிவனீடுகொடுக்கமாட்டான். This person cannot compete with him. ஈடுபாடு, s. Loss and gain, நய நஷ்டம். 2. Substitution, ஒப்பு. ஈடேற, inf. To be emancipated from sin, births, &c., to obtain final happiness, உய்ய. 2. To be saved from ruin and be rendered secure, to rise from indigence to prosperity, to be completely rescued from distress, difficulty, danger, disease, &c., வாழ்வடைய. கன்னிகையீடேறிவிட்டாள். The girl has attained a marriage settlement. அந்தக்குடியீடேறிவிட்டது. That family is rescued from indigence, saved from ruin. &c. ஈடேற்ற, inf. To deliver, rescue, இரட்சிக்க. 2. To raise one from distress, indigence, &c. to the attainment of the desired good, to promote, to establish in good circumstances. வாழ்வடை யச்செய்ய. 3. To redeem, emancipate from births, &c., மீட்க. ஈடேற்றப்பட, inf. To be saved, delivered, rescued from ruin indigence, distress, &c., to be rendered secure against danger, &c., இரட்சிக்கப்பட. ஈடேற்றம், s. Final and eternal happiness, the liberation of the soul from the body and its exemption from further transmigrations, and translation to a permanent state of happiness, final emancipation, பேரின்பவாழ்வு. 2. Deliverance from a state of suffering, indigence, &c., உய்வு. 3. The marriage of a destitute girl under favorable auspices, கன்னிகையீடேற்றம். ஈட்டுக்கீடு, s. Like for like, retaliation, requital. கடையீடு, s. Ground the lowest in value and assessment. தலையீடு, s. A very fruitful soil, known to be such by its aspect. 6)

Five salts are spoken of as used by alchymists and சித்தாதிகள்; viz.: 1. கறியுப்பு, culinary salt. 2. வெடியுப்பு, salt-petre. 3. இந்துப்பு, a fossil, medicinal salt. 4. ஓட்டு ப்பு, salt supposed to be formed in the skull. 5. அமரியுப்பு, Urinary salt. இந்தப்பேச்சிலேஉப்பில்லை. Insipid discourse. உப்புக்கசனை--உப்பூறணி, s. Being impregnated with salt, as land. உப்புக்கட்டி, s. A granulation on a lump of salt. உப்புக்கண்டம், s. Salted meat, a piece of saltfish, flesh, &c. உப்புக்கண்டம்பறிகொடுத்தபார்ப்பாத்திபோல.... Like a Brahmanee who has lost her salted mutton [prov.], used when something is lost which cannot to inquired after. உப்புக்கரித்தல்--உப்புக்கூர்த்தல், v. noun. Having a saline taste. உப்புக்கீரை, s. A plant used for curry, ஓர்வகைக்கீரை. 2. A kind of curry made of that plant, ஓர்கறி. உப்புக்குத்தி, s. A kind of bird, ஓர்பட்சி. உப்புக்கொள்ளுகிறது, s. A play, taking a child on the back and crying, Salt for sale, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. உப்புச்செய்ய--உப்புவிளைவிக்க-உப்பமைக்க, inf. To make salt, உப்புண் டாக்க. உப்புத்தண்ணீர், s. Salt-water, brackish water. உப்புத்தரை--உப்புத்தரவை, s. Brackish soil. உப்புத்திராவகம், s. Muriatic acid, இலவணதிராவகம். உப்புத்திரி, s. A twist dipped in a preparation of salt, to serve as an injection for a child, மலங்கழிக்கஏற்றுந்திரி. உப்புப்பட, inf. To form as salt in pans, &c., by natural process, உப்புண் டாக. உப்புப்பாத்தி, s. The division or beds in salt-pans. உப்புப்பாத்திகட்ட, inf. To make salt-pans. உப்புப்பார்க்க, inf. To try the seasoning of curry, &c. by the taste, உப்புருசிபார்க்க. உப்புப்பால், s. The milk of the mother after child birth for three days. உப்புப்புல்லு, s. Grass growing in salt soil. உப்புப்பூக்க--உப்புப்பொரிய, inf. To begin to form--as salt; to form as the lamina, உப்புமலர. 2. To have a pale color on the skin, perhaps a concretion from perspiration, சரீரத்திலுப்புப்படர. உப்புப்புளிதள்ள, inf. To abstain from salt and acid things--a regimen in medical prescriptions. உப்புப்புளிப்புப்பார்க்க, inf. To examine the taste of curries, சுவையினிசை வுபார்க்க. 2. (fig.) To examine, make inquiry beforehand. பரீட்சைபார்க்க. 3. (fig.) To try or examine a part of a work, &c. in order to form an estimate of the whole. உப்புவாணிகர், s. Salt dealers, the caste, உமணர். உப்புவாணிகனறிவானோகர்ப்பூரவிலை? Is a salt dealer acquainted with the price of camphor? உப்புறைப்பு, s. Saltishness, flavoring of salt, உப்புக்கரிப்பு. காய்ச்சுப்பு or சவட்டுப்பு, s. Alkali, salt produced from the earth impregnated with soda. வழலையுப்பு, s. Soap. கறியுப்பு--கடலுப்பு, s. Sea-salt. காருப்பு, s. Salt produced from sesamum seed, கடுந்திலாலவணம். வளையலுப்பு, s. Fel vitri, glassgall; a very white salt. கல்லுப்பு, s. Salt in lumps. கந்தகவுப்பு, s. Salt produced from sulphur. கறுத்தவுப்பு, s. Black salt produced from the ashes of certain plants. மரவுப்பு, s. Potash. 63)

uy (p. 63) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To live as man, beast, or vegetables; to subsist, survive, revive or flourish--as trees, plants, &c., சீவிக்க. 2. (p.) To obtain benefits, privileges, &c.; to be blessed, to be happy, to prosper, flourish, to be relieved from distress, oppression, suffering, &c., உயிர்வாழ. 3. To obtain heavenly bliss, to gain exemption from transmigration, ஈடேற. 4. To escape from dangers, wild beasts, &c., to flee from, தப்ப. உய்கதியால்--உய்தடி, s. A live hedge-stick. உய்தவம், s. Austerities leading to bliss. உய்பயிர், s. Thriving crops, trees, &c. 2. (fig.) A person in thriving circumstances. உய்வனவு, v. noun. [prov.] Flourishing or reviving as a tree, செழிப்பு. 2. Living, subsistence, maintenance, சீவனம். 3. s. Means of attaining eternal bliss, ஈடேற்றம். This word properly must be உய்வு. உய்விக்க, inf. To save alive, cause to live, prosper, flourish, &c. This is the causative of உய். உய்வு--உய்தி, v. noun. Enjoyment of life, prosperity, felicity, உயிர்வா ழ்வு. 2. Bliss, salvation, ஈடேற்றம். 3. Living, life as spoken auspiciously, உயிர்க்கை. ஒருவன்செய்நன்றிகொன்றார்க்குய்தியில்லெனவ றம்பாடின்றே. The divine laws declare that to the ungrateful there is no happiness here or hereafter. (அலங்.) உலகமாதா, s. The mother of the world--applied to Sarasvati, சரச்சுவதி. 2. Lukshmi, இலக்குமி. 3. Parvati, பார்ப் பதி. (p.) உலகமீன்றாள், s. Relative duties, the customs, rites or duties to be performed according to the country, caste, rank, relation, &c., of persons respectively. உலகாயிதம், s. A system of materialism, or atheistical epicurianism, அறுசமயங்களிலொன்று. See சமயம். (p.) உலகாள--உலகோம்ப, inf. To govern, protect his country--as one of the duties of a king. உலகாள்வோன், s. A monarch, உலோகாதிபன். உலகியல், s. The customs of the world, உலகநடை. உலகோம்பல், v. noun. Preserving the world--one of the six occupations of kings. See தொழில். உலகோற்பத்தி, s. The origin, or development of worlds. மேலுலகு, s. The upper worlds, which are seven in number, viz.: பூலோ கம், புவர்லோகம், சுவர்லோகம், மகாலோகம், சன லோகம், தபோலோகம், சத்தியலோகம். கீழுலகு, s. The lower worlds or regions; which are also seven, அதலம், விதலம், சுதலம், தராதலம், இரசாதலம், மகாதலம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகம், s. The three worlds, viz.: சொர்க்கம், மத்தியம், பாதாளம். மூவுலகாளி, s. God, (lit.) the sovereign of the three worlds, கடவுள். (p.) மூவுலகுணர்ந்தோன், s. He who comprehends the three worlds, God, க டவுள். 2. Argha, அருகன். (p.) மூவுலகேந்தி, s. To oppose, to disobey, to be contumacious, எதிர்த்துப் பேச. 2. To answer, retort, மறுமொழிசொ ல்ல. 3. To cavil, dispute, to be petulant, morose, cross, வாதுசெய்ய. எதிரூன்ற, inf. Counter magic, magic resorted to in retaliation, sorcery, &c., எதிரேவல். எதிரொலி, s. Echo, reverberation of sound. பிரதித்தொனி. எதிரொலித்தல், v. noun. Echoing, resounding. எதிர்கொள்ள--எதிர்கொண்டழைக் க, inf. To meet and receive a guest, a great person, a wedding party, &c., coming to one's house, சந்திக்க. எதிர்கோள், v. noun. Meeting in the way, meeting or receiving a person, எதிர்கொள்ளுகை. விருந்தெதிர்கோடல், v. noun. Inviting guests, or devotees, religious mendicants, &c.--one of the duties enjoined on a householder as the condition of his own participation of the good things of providence. See இல், house. (சிலப்பதிகாரம்.) எதிர்க்கடை, s. An opposition bazaar. கீரைக்கடைக்குமெதிர்க்கடைவேண்டும். An opposition stall is necessary even among green grocers. [prov.] எதிர்க்கட்சி, s. A slanting timber forming a continued line with the ridge and uniting in an angle formed by the slanting hip-rafters on either end of a hipped or bungalo roof. எதிர்ச்சாட்சி, s. Counter testimony; a witness brought to disprove previous testimony, மாறானசாட்சி. எதிர்ச்செட்டு, s. Competition in trade, ஒருவன்விற்பதற்குமாறாகவிற்கை. 2. [prov.] Trading at second hand, buying and selling again directly at a small profit. எதிர்நடை, s. The act of doing perversely. 2. Opposite course. எதிர்நடைக்கணக்கு, s. A register or account kept by each partner in a concern, that one may be examined by the other. எதிர்நிரைநிறை--எதிர்நிரனிறை, s. An arrangement of a series of verbs, &c. in the contrary order to that in which their nouns occur. See முறை நிரனிறை. எதிர்நிலை, s. Resistance, opposition, எதிர்நிற்கை. எதிர்நிலையகத்திணை, s. [in amatory verse.] The rule for elucidating a circumstance by the opposite case, contrast. எதிர்நிற்க, inf. To stand before one, முன்னிற்க. 2. To oppose, to be perverse, or contumacious, மாறுபட்டுநிற்க. 3. To stand against, withstand, cope with, போர்செய்ய. எதிர்நோக்குநட்சத்திரம், s. A nutchattra whose influence has respect to movements and interests in the different points of the compass, not an astrological, but a common phrase; the same as எதிர்நாள், or more properly, பக்கநாள். எதிர்பார்க்க, inf. To wait for an expected person, வரவுபார்த்திருக்க. 2. To expect, to look forward, காத்திருக்க. இருகாரியத்திற்கெதிர்பார்த்துக்கொண்டிருக்கிறது. To hope for a thing, to be in expectation of it. எதிர்போக, inf. To go against, oppose, meet as an army, assail, எதிராய் போக. எதிர்ப்பட, inf. To meet as in the way, சந்திக்க. 2. To happen, occur, தோன்ற. எதிர்ப்படுத்த, inf. To confront, எதிராக்க. 2. To stir up strife, cause opposition, பகையாக்க. எதிர்ப்பாடு, v. noun. Meeting, எதிர் ப்படுகை. எதிர்ப்பாய்ச்சல், s. A contrary current; leaping in a contrary direction. எதிர்மறை, s. [in grammar.] The negative forms of expression, மறை--அ, அந், ந், கி, கு, வி, &c. are Sanscrit prefixes expressing negation. எதிர்மறைவினை, s. [in grammar.] The negative verb, மறைவினை. எதிர்முகம், s. oṭukku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுக்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுக்க, v. a. To reduce, compress, bring into a narrower compass, condense, to lessen, bring down--as another's pride, to keep down, keep under, அடக்க. 2. To press, oppress, tyrannize, vex, வருத்த. 3. To reduce the system by medicine or a sparing diet, உடம்பையொடுக்க. 4. To involve one in another--as the elements, cause to disappear--as the worlds, &c., at the close of an age, பூதங்களைலயிக்கச்செய்ய. 5. To close, to finish as a work, the harvest, &c., முடிக்க. 6. Distorted mouth, கோணல்வாய். வீட்டையொடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To build a house narrow. உடம்பையொடுக்க, inf. To reduce the body by eating sparingly. 2. To contract the body--as a tiger, a cat, &c., to reduce the body to a smaller compass --as in a leaping, sneaking, or creeping posture. செலவையொடுக்க--செலவையொ டுக்கிப்பிடிக்க. inf. To retrench expenses. 2. To live frugally, sparingly, &c. வயிற்றையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the appetite, to reduce the quantity of food in order to save money. புலனையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the senses--as ascetics or otherwise; to mortify the senses, passions, &c. 2. To call home the thoughts and fix them on divine things. ஒடுக்கு, v. noun.
