A circle of idols. சுற்றுக்கோயில், s. Smaller temples around the larger. சுற்றுச்சுழல்--சுற்றுச்சுழற்சி, v. noun. Meanderings of a labyrinth. 2. Intricacy of an affair. 3. Involution in style; an intricate form of expression. 4. Circumlocution, paraphrase, &c. 5. Reverse or intricate arrangement of ideas in the construction of verse. (c.) இந்தச்சுற்றுச்சுழல்களெனக்குத்தெரியாது. I don't understand this round about way of proceeding. சுற்றுப்படாகை--சுற்றுவட்டகை, s. The country or villages round about. சுற்றுப்பலி--சுற்றுப்பூசை, s. [prov.] Offerings placed on the ground round a temple in the direction of the eight cardinal paints, for the guardian regents. 2. (fig.) Bribing all persons in authority, இலஞ்சங்கொடுக்கை. சுற்றுப்பட்டு--சுற்றுப்புறம், s. Place or region round about. See பட்டு. சுற்றுப்பட்டுக்கிராமம், s. Suburbs, villages adjoining a town. சுற்றுப்பிரகாரம், s. The circular area around a temple. 2. An outer court. சுற்றுமதில், s. A surronding wall, commonly of a temple. சுற்றுமுற்றும், adv. [prov. சுற்றும் பிற்றும்.] All about, all round. c. சுற்றுமுற்றும்பார்க்க, inf. To look on all sides. சுற்றுவழி, s. As சுற்று, 4. 2. cūlai (p. 201) s. A class of diseases including arthritic complaints a stiffness or contraction of the muscles or nerves, scrofula, rheumatism, gout, colic, &c., also complaints from irregularity of the menses, ஓர்நோய். (c.) W. p. 855. S'OOLA.--Note. The following are given by Rottler, as arising from the supposed vitiation. excess, or derangement of the humors. viz.: 1. பித்தசூலை, arthritis from bile, 2. வாதசூலை, from bad and cold humors. 3. சிலேட்டுமசூலை, from phlegm. 4. வாத பித்தசூலை, from bad humors and bile. 5. சிலேட்டுமபித்தசூலை, from phlegm and bile. 6. ஐயக்கணசூலை, from phlegm and heat. In some cases, the disease takes its name from the part affected. Besides these six, the following are given by the Hindus, viz.: 1. அக்ஷசூலை. 2. ஆம சூலை. 3. உலர்த்்்்துசூலை. 4. உற்காரசூலை. 5. கர்ப்பசூலை. 6. கன்னசூலை. 7. கிருமிசூலை. 8. குன்மசூலை. 9. கரசூலை. 1. தூரசூலை. 11. நிதம்பசூலை. 12. பக்கசூலை. 13. முறிதிரிசூலை. 14. மேகசூலை, which see in their places. சூலைக்கட்டு, v. noun. Stiffness or contraction of the limbs. (c.) சூலைக்கட்டி, s. A local swelling. சூலைக்குடைச்சல், v. noun. See குடை, v. a. சூலைக்குத்து, s. Pains from சூலை, obstructions of the menses. சூலைக்குன்மம், s. tirumāl (p. 240) s. Vishnu, as lord of illusion, in the universe, விட்டுணு; [ex மால், illusion.] திருமாலவதாரம், 1. Ten incarnations of Vishnu. 1. Matsya, மச்சம், a fish assumed to kill சோமுகன், an Asura who had stolen the Vedas and hidden them in the sea. 2. Kurma, கூர்மம். tortoise, assumed to support Mount Mandara, used as a churning stick in churning the sea of milk to obtain Amrita, or nectar. 3. Varáha, வராகம், a boar, assumed to open and spread out the earth which இரணியாக்கன் had rolled up, as a scroll, and sunk in the ocean; and to kill him. 4. Narasingha, நரசிங்கம், manlion, assumed to destroy இரணியகசிபன், the younger brother of இரணியாக்கன், who, to avenge the death of his brother, had abolished the worship of Vishnu.--Note. These four were assumed without parents. 5. Váhmana, வாமனம், the dwarf born of காசிபன் and அதிதி to overcome மாபலி by deceit, coming to him as a beggar. 6. Parasurama, பரசுராமன், or the axe bearing Rama, born of சமதக்கினி and இரேணுகை to kill the Kshtriyas who oppressed the brahmans. 7. Ramachandra, இராமன், king of Ayodhya, born of தசரதன் and கோசலை, to kill Ravana, king of Lanka, and other Rakshasas. 8. Balab'hadra, பலபத் திரன், half brother of krishna; his father's name was வசுதேவன், and he had two mothers, தேவகி and உரோகணி. He come to destroy பிரலம்பன் and his Rakshasas. 9. Krishna, கண்ணன், son of வசு தேவன் and தேவகி, came to excite the wars of the Bharata, and to relieve the earth of its over-burdened population. 1. The horse, கற்கி, yet future, and for the purpose of destroying the universe.--Note. The poet Jayadeva places Krishna as the eighth and makes the ninth, Buddha. Another class of fifteen incarnations of Vishnu is given. 1. சனகன், Sanaka. 2. சனந்தனன், Sanandana. 3. சனாதன், Sanáta. 4. சனற்குமாரன், Sanatkumara. Rishis regarded as representatives of Brahma and celebrated in the Bagavata. 5. நரநாராயணன், Naranarayana, a great personage mentioned in the Maha B'harata. 6. கபிலன், Capila, founder of the Sank'hya philosophy. 7. இடபன், Vrishab'ha-Yogi, the first of the twenty-four Jaina saints. 8. நாரதன், Nárada,, inventor of the lute, messenger of the gods, and first of the ten principal Munis. 9. அயக்கிரீவன் ((lit.) the horse-headed), Hayagriva, of the Maha Bharata, to be distinguished from the Asura of the same name. 1. தத்தாத்திரேயன், Dattatreya, mentioned in Bagavata. 11. மோகினி, Mohini, a fascinating female. (See மோ கினி.) 12. யாகபதி, Yágapati, the lord of sacrifices, always receiving the first of the offerings. 13. வியாதன், Vyasa, son of Parásara, arranger of the Vedas. 14. தன்வந்தரி, D'hanvantari, a physician of the gods. (See தன்வந்தரி.) 15. பௌத் தன், Budha, the head of the Buddhist system; by some considered the ninth principal Avatar. திருமாலாயுதம், 5, s. The five weapons of Vishnu. 1. சங்கம் or பாஞ்சசன்னியம், chank; 2. சக்கரம் or சுதரிசனம், a wheellike missile; 3. தனுசு or சாரங்கம், bow. 4. வாள் or நாந்தகம், sword; 5. தண்டு or கௌமோதகி, club.--Note. These are pictured on a metal plate, and worn on the neck as an ornament, or amulet, by children, which is called பஞ்சாயுதம். திருமாலுந்தி, s. The mountain town of Parlany, பழனி, one of the six places sacred to Skanda, முருகர்ஸ்தலம். திருவாழ்ங்கோடு--திருவான்கோடு, s. Travancore, a town and country at the S. A lighted lamp as representing a god. திருவிளையாடல், v. noun. Sports of the deity, commonly of a wonderful, or miraculous character, தெய்வவிளையாட்டு. 2. A book treating on the sixty-four wonderful sports of Siva at Madura. அறுபத்துநாலுதிருவிளையாடல். The sixty-four sacred sports of Siva at Madura. திருவிளையாட்டு, v. noun. The wonderful sports of a deity, தெய்வலீலை. 2. [in burlesque.] Tricks, roguishness, frolics, பாடி. திருவுந்தியார், s. A section of திருவா சகம், composed by மாணிக்கவாசகர், Manikavasakar, திருவாசகத்தோருறுப்பு. திருவுளம்--திருவுள்ளம், s. The will of a god, a king, a guru, &c., [ex உளம், உள்ளம், mind.] 2. (fig.) The Supreme Being, கடவுள். திருவுளங்கொள்ள, inf. To approve, in case of a deity, or holy person; to deign, to be pleased. சுவாமிஅப்படியேதிருவுளங்கொண்டிருக்கிருக்கிறார்.... God is pleased to have it so. திருவுளச்சீட்டு, s. A lot cast or drawn. திருவுளச்செயல், s. Providential occurrence, providence. திருவுளமத்தியஸ்தம், s. Appeal to the deity. திருவுளமறிய, inf. To be witness--as the Supreme Being; used only in some form of the verb. திருவுளமறியச்சொல்லுகிறேன். I say it, God being witness. திருவுளம்பற்ற, inf. To speak, said of a deity or great person; to condescend to speak. திருவுளம்வைத்தல், v. noun. A deity, a guru, &c., exercising grace, deigning, vouchsafing. திருவுறுப்பு, s. A female ornament of solid gold bearing the figure of Lukshmi, worn on the forehead, நுதன்மே லணி. See உத்தி. திருவூசல்--திருவூஞ்சல், s. A swing for the idol, used on the last day of the annual festival, and on some other special occasions; a kind of cot, தேவவூச லாட்டு. திருவூஞ்சலாட, inf. To swing the idol. திருவேங்கடம், s. A place sacred to Vishnu, திருப்பதி. See திசை. திருவேடம், s. Sacred dress of siva, or of his followers, such as red cloths, sacred beads, &c. 2. Ear-rings made of gold or copper worn by the பண்டாரம், the தம்பிரான், &c., சிவனடியார்காதணி. திருவேடம்பூண, inf. To wear the distinguishing marks of the Saiva sect. திருவேரகம், s. Trivaraka near Pondichery, one of the six places sacred to Skanda, குமரன்ஸ்தலம். திருவொற்றாடை, s. Cloth for wiping the body of the idol after bathing, or anointing it, விக்கிரகங்களையொற்றுஞ்சீலை. திருவொற்றியூர், s. A place sacred to Siva, ஓர்சிவஸ்தலம். திருவோணம், s. The twenty-second lunar asterism, containing three stars in the neck of the eagle, ஓணம். திருவோலக்கம், s. The assembly in the temple before an idol. See ஓலக்கம். 5)

piḷvai (p. 318) s. Cancer, fungus, carbuncle, polypus, scrofulus, ஓர்வகைச்சிலந்தி-- Of this are different kinds; இறைப்பிளவை, இராசபிள வை, உச்சிப்பிளவை, கும்பப்பிளவை, பக்கப்பிளவை, பனிச்சைப்பிளவை, which see. (c.) பிளவைபுறப்படுதல், v. noun. Coming out, appearing--as a cancer. 9)

puṟṟu (p. 328) s. [vul. புத்து, Tel. புட்ட.] Anthill, any hillock thrown up by animals. See கறையான். 2. Any thing scurvy, scrofulous, or cancerous, considered as resembling ant-hills, &c., as கன்னப்புற்று. 3. Hole of snakes ants, rats, &c., வளை. (c.) புற்றுப்புற்றாய்ப்புறப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. He is covered with scrofulous eruptions. புற்றிலேகிடந்தபுடையனெழும்பினதுபோல. As if a concealed beaver-snake should rush at one. புற்றாஞ்சோறு--புற்றாம்பழஞ்சோறு, s.
