A contracted form of the negative gerund, எதிர்மறை வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as உண்ணா வந்தான்; for உண்ணாமல்வந்தான், he came, not having eaten. 12. A contracted form of the neg. rel. participle, எதிர்மறைப்பெயரெச்ச விகுதி--as ஓடாக்குதிரை, for ஓடாதகுதிரை, a horse that will not run. 13. A poetic form of the gerund, வினையெச்சவிகுதி--as பாராவணங்காமகிழ்ந்தான், he saw, worshipped and rejoiced;--பாராவணங்கா for பார்த்துவண ங்கி. 14. A neg. particle which may be expressed or understood before the termination of any verb except the neut. plural--as நடவாதான், he will not walk; நட வாய், you will not walk, &c. 15. iyṟṟu (p. 48) கிறேன், இயற்றினேன், வே ன், இயற்ற, v. n. To do , make, effect, perform, execute, bring about, cause to take place, discharge a duty or obligation, exercise or use an art, செய்ய. 2. To transact, manage affairs, superintend, cause or excite one to do a thing, நடத்த. 3. To destine, appoint, assign, விதிக்க. (p.) இயற்றலுமீட்டலுங்காத்தலும். Devising means to increase the finances, collecting and keeping them. எல்லாத்தவமுமியற்றி. Performing every species of austerity. ஐந்துவேள்ளியுமியற்றி. oṭungku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுங்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுங்க, v. n. To shrink, become reduced, compressed, closed, contracted, narrow, to lessen, to abate, crouch, lie within a small compass, diminish, grow less--as a globe from the centre to the poles, அடங்க. 2. To be restrained--as the senses, desires, &c., புலனொங்க. 3. To give place, recede, pass on one side--as in meeting a superior; to shrink within one's self, showing reverence, taking off the mantle, turban, sandals, &c.; to creep along sideways, ஒதுங்க. 4. To be reduced in circumstances, power, prosperity, in show, in expenditure, in the mental or bodily faculties, energies, &c., to grow lean, be reduced in size, whether by disease, want of food, or otherwise, குறைய. 5. To cease-as noise, bustle, stir, &c., அமைய. 6. To sink or retire--as the soul in sleep, fainting, or through the different stages at death, சோர. 7. To become dissolved or involved one within another--as the elements, worlds, &c., till all is absorbed in the deity, பூதங்களொடுங்க. 8. To end, terminate, cease, முடிய. 9. To obey, submit, கீழ்ப்படிய. 1. To be concealed, பதுங்க. 11. To be packed, stowed away, செறிய. 12. To be retrenched, சுருங்க. 13. To disappear, become absorbed, dissolved--as salt in water, &c., கரைய. 14. To grow dim-as a light, a heavenly body, &c., to become extinct--as light by passing into its previous elements or ether, ஒளிமழுங்க. மாடுநுகத்தைக்கண்டொடுங்குகிறது. The ox has assumed a sickly appearance; or it shrinks at the sight of the yoke. ஊணொடுங்கவீணொடுங்கும். If his food be reduced, his dissipation will cease. உலகுதோன்றினமுறையேயொடுங்கும். The world will be reduced to its primeval elements in the order in which it was educed. ஆளொடுங்கினவேளைபார்த்துவந்தான். He watched for an opportunity and came when all was still (for plunder, &c.). கலிமுதிரமுதிரப்பெரியவர்களொடுங்கிவிட்டார்கள்... As the iron age advances, the great are reduced. ஒடுங்கலில்பல்கலை. The various sciences which are unlimited. குளிராலொடுங்க, inf. To shrink with cold. ஒடுங்கி, s. A tortoise, ஆமை. ஒடுக்கம், v. noun. Narrowness, straitness, closeness, வழியொடுக்கம். 2. Contraction into itself--as the tortoise, an elastic substance, &c., சுருங்குகை. 3. Retirement within doors, abatement, concealment by stooping and creeping along--as a man to shoot, or a tiger to spring on its prey, &c., பதுங்குகை. 4. Suppression, contraction, reduction, நெருக்கம். 5. Reverence, self-restraint, modesty, அ டக்கம். 6. Involution--as of the elements one into another, absorption, dissolution, disappearance--as of salt in water, ஒன்றிலொன்றடங்குகை. 7. Cessation (of noise, bustle, stir--as by night in time of epidemics, &c.), quietude, calmness, stillness, அமைவு. 8. Sinking as the soul through its different stages at death, gradual reduction--as of circumstances, the powers of the body by age, &c., பலமுதலியவொடுங்குகை. 9. s. End, close, termination, முடிவு. ஒடுக்கத்திலேயொன்றுமில்லை. At the end nothing (of earth) will accompany us, remain, avail, &c. அவனுக்குச்சாப்பாடொடுக்கமாய்ப்போயிற்று. His food is diminished in quantity. காரியமொடுக்கத்தில்வந்தது. The matter has resolved itself into a narrow compass. காரியமொடுக்கமாயிருக்கின்றது. The business, provision, ceremony, &c., is on a small scale. ஒடுக்கநாள், s. A day of distress. ஒடுக்கமில்லாதவன், s. One who does not restrain himself, his passions, desires, &c. 2. One who does not pay proper respect to his superiors. ஒடுக்கம்பார்த்துவர, inf. To attack a house, a city, when in a defenceless state, or by night when all are asleep. ஒடுக்கவணக்கம், s. Modest deportment, reverence, veneration. பனியொடுக்கம், s. The fall of heavy dew when all is still. காற்றொடுக்கம், s. A calm, a lull, absence of wind. புலனொடுக்கம், s. Restraint of the senses. 2. Absorption of the senses by sleep, syncope, the approach of death, &c., unconsciousness, stupor. 49)

kāṭci (p. 103) s. Sight, view, பார்்வை. 2. An object of sight, visible appearance, தோற் றம். 3. The manifestation of a deity or the sight of a great personage, தரிசனம். 4. (p.) [in logic.] Perception, evidence of the senses, பிரத்தியட்சப்பிரமாணம். 5. Knowledge, intelligence, ascertainment, அறிவு. 6. [in erotics.] One of the ten அவத்்தை, the first view which a bridegroom has of his bride, விரகாவஸ்தைக்காட்சி. 7. (c.) Anomaly, a strange event, நூதனக்காட்சி.--Note. In the agama logic, seven species of perception are given, viz.: 1. ஐயக்காட்சி, Indistinct apprehension, doubt, uncertainty, hesitation. 2. திரிபுக்காட்சி, misapprehension, misconception, optical or mental illusion. 3. விகற் பக்காட்சி, discrimination or knowledge to distinguish things one from another in five particulars, viz.: in name, kind, quality, action, and substance. or matter. 4. பொ றிவாயிற்காட்சி, perception of the sences, with the aid of the mental faculties. 5. மனக் காட்சி, or மானதக்காட்சி, ideas formed in the mind of things perceived by the senses. 6. அனுபவக்காட்சி, perception by actual experience of the exercise of the affecions towards objects perceived. 7. யோகக்காட்சி, the spiritual perception of the Yoga, or knowledge of events past, present or future, by abstract devotion--Note. 2d. Each of the above has two divisions, one, புறம்-abroad, relating to external or secular affairs; the other, அகம்-- at home, to religious affairs. கண்ணுக்குக்காட்சிகடவுளுக்குங்காட்சி. What is pleasing to the sight is pleasing to the deity--referring to the ornaments of the temple, rich offerings, &c. கண்ணுள்ளபோதே காட்சி. Gratify your sight while you can. காட்சிகொடுக்க, inf. To manifest himself--as a deity. காட்சிப்பிரமாணம், s. [in logic.] One of the eight modes of ascertaining truth. See பிரத்தியட்சப்பிரமாணம். காட்சிப்பொருள், s. Things seen, objects of sight or sense--as distinguished from கருத்துப்பொருள். or mental objects. காட்சிமறைத்தல், v. noun. Hinderance in seeing or observing any thing. See அஷ்டகுற்றம். காட்சியர்-காட்சியவர்--காட்சியார், s. The wise, அறிஞர். காட்சியாக, inf. To appear in a vision. காட்சியுணர்வு, s. The sense of sight, காட்சியறிவு. காணாக்காட்சி, s. An extraordinary sight, a wonderful occurrence. 2. An ill omen. திருக்காட்சி, s. A divine meditation. காரணக்காட்சி, s. A great sight or event which may be the cause of future effects. 81) *

kuṉi (p. 132) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. (from Sans. Kun'a, contracted or curved.) To stoop, crouch, bend; to be bowed--as the head, வணங்க. 2. To bend or be bent-as a bow, வளைய. 3. (fig.) To stoop, condescend; to yield, தாழ. 4. (சது.) To pity, commiserate, relent, grieve, இரங்க. குனியநிமிரமாட்டான். He can neither stoop nor straighten himself--either from disease, fatness, or having eaten too much. வில்லுக்குனியாதெய்தால்விலகாதெதிர்த்தபகை. If the bow be not bent sufficiently, the enemy will not be put to flight. முட்டுமுன்குனியவேண்டும். Stoop before you strike your head; i. e. after-thoughts avail nothing. குனிந்துநடக்க, inf. To walk stooping. குனிந்துபார்க்க, inf. To stoop and look. குனியப்போட--குனியவைக்க, s. To place in a stooping posture or position. குனிதல்--குனிவு, v. noun. Stooping; inclination. 64)

Five apartments are enumerated in which Siva is said to manifest himself--as கனக சபை, சித்திரசபை, சிற்சபை, தேவசபை, நிருத்தசபை, which see. 2. (c.) See கோழை சபைச்சேகரத்தார், s. Parishioners. (R.) சபைப்பழக்கம், s. Acquaintance with society, etiquette, ceremony, &c. சபையார், s. The members of an assembly, society. 2. [among Christians.] Church-members, திருச்சபையார். சபையிருத்த, inf. To seat a company properly according to their respective rank, to keep them in order, &c. (Little used.) சபையிலிருந்துதள்ள--சபைக்குப்புறம் பாக்க, inf. To exclude or reject from society, to excommunicate. சபையேற, inf. To come before an assembly, to appear--as a performer, &c. 2. To join or mix in society. சபையேறினவன், s. A person accustomed to society. 2. A person of good manners, free from rusticity, &c. சபையுள்ளார், s. The chorus, or the chief singers, in a play, கூத்தாடிகட்கு உதவி யாய்ப்படிப்போர். (p.) சபைவளமை--சபைவண்மை, s. The authority or public acts of an assembly, சபையதிகாரம். (R.) சபையேற்ற, inf.
