ஒறு
oṟu (p. 84) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To reduce, suppress, subject, restrain the senses, desires, &c., to mortify the body, curb the appetites, to pinch, stint or deny one's self, to suppress the passions, அடக்க. 2. To afflict, distress, cause pain to one's self or others, அலைக்க. 3. To punish, chastise, தண்டிக்க. (கு. 964.) 4. To rebuke, reprove, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 5. To dislike, to be disgusted with, வெறுக்க. (p.) 6. v. n. To become scarce and dear, to fail or be scanty--as crops, rain, &c., to be sparing, குறைய. கொலையிற்கொடியாரைவேந்தொறுத்தல். Punishing the guilty by death--the prerogative of a prince. (குறள்.) அகமொறுக்கும். Corn will be scarce. அவனொருத்தருக்குமொறுக்கிறதில்லை. He submits to no one's reproof; he does not brook censure. கையொறாமற்கொடுக்கிறான். He gives liberally. அன்னத்தையொறு. Abstain from taking food. சற்றும்வாயொறுக்கிறானில்லை. He does not at all restrain himself (in speaking). 2. He does not conform to the prescribed diet. உடம்பினையொறுத்துநோற்பார். Those who mortify their bodies and do penance. (ஸ்காந்.) கொடுஞ்சொற்றாயரொறுப்பவும். When the mother rebukes with sharp language-ஒறுத்துக்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To be afflicted. விலையொறுக்க, inf. [prov.] To become dear. மழையொறுத்தகாலம், s. A drought. வயிற்றையொறுக்க, inf. To pinch one's self. ஒறுப்பு, v. noun. Scarcity, dearness, ஒறுக்கை. 2. Restraint of the passions, self-mortification, self-denial, உட ல்வருத்துகை. 3. Chastisement, punishment, correction, தண்டிப்பு. 4. Rebuke, reproof, கடிவு. 5. Dislike, disgust, வெறு ப்பு. 6. Privation, deprivation, குறைவு. 22)
தபம்
tapam (p. 223) s. Austerity, penance, self-mortifications, bodily tortures, தவம். 2. The month of February, மாசிமாதம். (சது.) தபாக்கினி, s. Fires kindled for selfmortification. 2. (fig.) The heat or fervor of devotion, religious austerities, &c. தபோதனர், s. (plu.) Hermits, sages, as தவந்தர். தபோநிதி, s. One rich in religious merit gained by austerity; (used in panegyric.) தபோபலம், s. Fruits of religious austerities. தபோபுண்ணியம், s. High religious merit acquired by austerities. தபோபுத்திரன், s. A son obtained by austerities. தபோமகிமை, s. The high dignity, and glory of austerities. தபோமயம், s. Wholly of an ascetic nature of character. 2. A name of a forest rendered sacred by the performance of austerities. தபோவனம், s. A sacred forest, frequented by ascetics. தபோலோகம், s. One of the seven upper worlds, மேலேழுலோகத்தொன்று. 59)
தவசு
tavacu (p. 227) s. (also தபசு.) Religious austerities, penance, and self-mortification, to obtain power, or favor with some god. (See தவம்.) 2. Religious fasting in performance of vows, விரதம். (c.) W. p. 366. TAPAS. பிள்ளைக்குத்தவசிருக்கிறான். He is practising religious austerities to obtain offspring. தவசிலேநிற்க, inf. To stand for a long time in a posture of penance. 2. To adhere rigidly to religious austerities. 9)

puṇṇiyam (p. 324) s. Virtue, moral, or religious merit, from conformity to the Shastras, அறம். 2. Merit of virtuous actions performed in former births attaching to the soul, and bringing blessings, நல் வினைப்பயன். 3. Purity, holiness, தூய்மை. 4. Charity, good works, நல்வினை. (c.)) W. p. 54. PUN'YA. புண்ணியம்லபிக்கும். Virtue will bring a reward. புண்ணியம், 9. Nine charitable actions to a religious mendicant. See நவபுண் ணியம். புண்ணியம், 7. Seven good qualities and acts: 1. நகங்கிருதி, exemption from pride and self-importance; 2. தானம், bestowing gifts; 3. விரதம், fasting, penance, abstinence; 4. சினேகம், exercise of friendship or kindness; 5. நயபோசனம், hospitality; 6. கமை, patience, forbearance; 7. உற்சாகம், zeal, fortitude. புண்ணியகதை--புண்ணியசரித்திரம், s. Meritorious deeds especially of a former birth, resulting in present good, நல்வினை. புண்ணியகாலம், s. An auspicious time for the performance of religious duties, as the hour of an eclipse, &c. புண்ணியகேத்திரம்--புண்ணியக்ஷேத்தி ரம், s. Sacred land, or Central India, as புண்ணியபூமி. புண்ணியக்கருத்து, s. A virtuous or charitable disposition, தருமசிந்தை. புண்ணியசடம்--புண்ணியசரீரம்--புண் ணியதேகம், s. A meritorious, holy man. [in admiration.] புண்ணியசனேசுவரன், s. Kuvêra குபே ரன்; [ex புண்ணியசனம் et ஈசுவரன்.] புண்ணியசன்மம், s. One born with a virtuous disposition on account of good deeds in former births. புண்ணியசாலி, s. A charitable person. புண்ணியசுரூபி--புண்ணியசொரூபி, s. One remarkable for virtue; (lit.) the image or virtue. புண்ணியசாந்து, s. Cow-dung, சாணம். புண்ணியசேடம், s. Merit attaching to the soul at the expiration of each state of existence, to be enjoyed in other births, நல்லூழின்மீதி. புண்ணியதலம்--புண்ணியஸ்தலம், s. A place of resort for worship. புண்ணியதானம், s. Sacred gifts, made to brahmans, or others on special occasions. புண்ணியதிரணம், s. A sacrificial grass, white Kusa, வெண்டருப்பை; [ex திரணம், grass.] புண்ணியதினம். s. A holy day, adapted to religious duties. புண்ணியதீர்த்தம், s. Sacred bathing, a place for religious bathing. புண்ணியத்தானம்--புண்ணியஸ்தானம், [in astrol.] The ninth from the rising sign at birth. See தானம். 2. As புண்ணி யஸ்தலம். புண்ணியத்தோற்றம், 4. Four kinds of merit, attaching to the soul: 1. தவம், penance, self-mortifications, &c., 2. ஒழுக் கம், good conduct, moral and ceremonial; 3. கொடை, liberality, alms-giving; 4. கல்வி, education. புண்ணியநதி, s. A sacred river, as the Kâvery. புண்ணியபலம்--புண்ணியபலன், s. Fruit of meritorious deeds. புண்ணியபுத்திரன், s. A child of high religious merit. புண்ணியபுருஷன், s. As புண்ணியவா ளன். புண்ணியபூ--புண்ணியபூமி, s. [also திவ் வியபூமி.] The holy land of the Hindus, central Asia, bounded on the north by the Hymalayas, south by the Vindya mountains, and on the east and west by the sea. புண்ணியமுதல்வன்--புண்ணியமூர்த்தி, s. The first in merit--God, கடவுள். 2. Buddha, புத்தன். புண்ணியம்பலித்தல், v. noun. The resulting of merit in earthly prosperity. புண்ணியராத்திரம், s. A propitious night for ceremonies; [ex ராத்திரம்=இராத் திரி.] புண்ணியவதி--புண்ணியவாட்டி, s. A meritorious woman. புண்ணியவாளன்--புண்ணியவான், s. [fem. புண்ணியவாட்டி.] A man of high religious character. புண்ணியன், s. A righteous being, divine or human. 2. Siva, சிவன். 3. Argha of the Jainas, அருகன். புண்ணியாகவாசனம், s. An appeasing or propitious ceremony, a peace-offering, ஓர்சடங்கு. 2. Purification of a house from any ceremonial defilement, ஆசூசநி வாரணம்.--Sans. differs. See W. p. 541. PUN'YAHAVACHANA. புண்ணியாத்துமா, s. A righteous soul, a charitable person, male of female. புண்ணியோதயம், s. Manifestation of meritorious deeds, புண்ணியம்தோன்றுகை. 2)
