eccil (p. 73) s. Remains, or refuse of food, crumbs, orts (deemed impure), சேஷம். 2. Any thing defiled by contact with the mouth, saliva, &c., மிச்சில்; [ex எஞ்சு.] எச்சிற்கையாற்காக்கையுமோட்டான். He will not even scare away a crow with his hand while eating, lest any grain of rice fall thereby. எச்சிலாக்க--எச்சிற்படுத்த, inf. To defile food or any thing, by bringing it into contact with the mouth; to defile food by the hand, or spoon in feeding, உச்சிட்டப்படுத்த. 2. To deflour a woman, deprive a damsel of her virginity, either by force or with consent, கன்னிமைகெடுக்க. எச்சிலார், s. Low-caste people, இழிஞர். (p.) எச்சிலிலை--எச்சிற்கல்லை, s. The leaf on which one has eaten. எச்சிலுமிய--எச்சிலுமிழ--எச்சில் துப்ப, inf. To spit. (c.) எச்சில்வாய், s. Mouth unwashed after eating, கழுவாதவாய். எச்சிற்கலக்க, inf. To eat the food left by the bridegroom--as a Hindu bride does on the occasion of her marriage. 2. To eat the food left by others--as friends. எச்சிற்கலப்பு, s. The above ceremony. எச்சிற்காறியுமிழ், inf. To force up the phlegm and spit it out. எச்சிற்கிதம்பாட, inf. To assent to what is wrong from an unworthy motive. எச்சிற்குழி, s. A cavity in a court-yard, used as a spittoon, எச்சில் போடுங்குழி. எச்சிற்பட, inf. To become defiled--as food, &c., by saliva, or contact with the mouth. எச்சிற்பருக்கை, s. Grains of rice fallen while eating, சிந்திக்கிடக்குஞ்சோறு. எச்சிற்பேய், s. A diminutive demon exceedingly voracious, ஓர்பிசாசம். 2. A person very fond of dainties, பெ ருந்தீனிக்காரன். எச்சிற்றழும்பு--எச்சிற்றேமல், s. A kind of ring-worm supposed to be induced by contact with the saliva of others, தழுதணை. எச்சின்மாற்ற, inf. To purify a place after eating by smearing it anew with cowdung. கண்ணெச்சில், s. Evil imagined to be caused by other people's eyes. கண்ணெச்சிற்கழிக்க, inf. To perform a ceremony for the removal of the imagined inauspicious effect of evil eyes. (நைட.) 25)

eḷ (p. 75) s. [vul. எள்ளு.] One of the nine kinds of grain, sesamum, from the seeds of which an oil is extracted, used for food, bathing, &c., திலம். Sesamum orientale. See தானியம் and எண்ணெய்.-Note. The ள் of this word becomes ட் and ண் by permutation. எள்ளத்தனையைமலையத்தனையாக்க. To make a mountain of a sesamum seed, to exaggerate. எள்ளளவு--எள்ளுப்போலே. As much as a sesamum seed, a very little. எள்ளளவுநம்பிக்கையுமில்லை. Utterly unworthy of confidence. 2. Destitute of belief, confidence, &c. எள்ளுக்குளெண்ணெய்போலெங்குநிறைந்தகடவுள். God who pervades the universe, as oil the sesamum seed. எட்கடை--எட்கிடை--எட்பிரமா ணம். As much as a sesamum seed, எள்ள ளவு. 2. A standard of measure in regard to space, ஓரளவு--eight எள் make a நெல் or grain or rice; eight grains of rice one அங்குலம், an inch, &c. எட்பாகு, s. A kind of porridge made of sesamum seed, எள்ளுப்பாகு. எண்ணெய், s. [impr. எண்ணை.] Rape-seed oil. 2. (fig.) A common name for oils of all kinds. எண்ணெயூற்ற, inf. To express oil, எண்ணெய்வடிக்க. எண்ணெயெரிக்க, inf. To prepare medicinal oils by burning, in which the drugs are rolled up in a bit of cloth which is dipped in oil and set on fire; the oil which drops from it is used as a medicine, தைலமெரிக்க. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பு, s. The color of rape-seed oil, or dark brown. எண்ணெய்க்கறுப்பி, s. A female whose skin resembles rape-seed oil, not so much in regard to its color as its soft and beautiful appearance. எண்ணெய்க்காப்பு, s. Oil for bathing an idol, எண்ணெயபிஷேகம். எண்ணெய்க்காரன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். எண்ணெய்ச்சாணை, s. A hone prepared for use by oiling. எண்ணெய்ச்சாயம், s. Oil paint, எண்ணெயாற்செய்யப்பட்டசாயம். 2. Dyeing a cloth red after soaking it in margosa oil, எண்ணெயிற்றோய்த்தேற்றப்பட்டசாயம். எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு, s. Indigestion produced by eating oily food, எண்ணெய் வயிற்றிற்றங்குகை. 2. A clotted state of the hair from the oil not being well washed out, எண்ணெய்மயிரில்விடாமை. 3. A bad smell--as of oil, எண்ணெய்நாற்றம். எண்ணெய்ச்சீலை, s. Cloth dipped in oil to be applied to wounds, எண் ணெய்த்துணி. 2. A piece of cloth put round the waist before bathing, எண் ணெய்க்கோவணம். எண்ணெய்தேய்க்க, inf. To rub oil. எண்ணெய்தொட்டுப்பொட்டுவைக் க. inf. To dip the finger in oil before bathing dropping seven drops on the floor for the சிரஞ்சிவியர், who are supposed in consequence to grant long life. எண்ணெய்பிறக்க, inf. To form as oil by boiling. எண்ணெய்பூச, inf. To oil, anoint, besmear with oil. எண்ணெய்பொருத்த, inf. To put medical oil on the head or other parts of the body, and to rub it in, மருந்தெண் ணெய்பூச. எண்ணெய்ப்பற்று, s. Adherence of oil or unctuous matter to the bowels, hair, clothes, &c., oil, greasy substance in food--as in fish or on the dress from cooking, எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. எண்ணெய்வழுக்கு, v. noun. Being greasy--as oil, &c., எண்ணெய்ச்சிக்கு. 2. Shining, sleek, glossy, bright, எண்ணெய் மினுக்கு. எண்ணெய்வாணிகன், s. An oilmonger, எண்ணெய்விற்போன். ஆமணக்கெண்ணெய், s. Castor oil. தலைக்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil for the head. விளக்கெண்ணெய், s. Lamp oil. புன்கெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from புன்கம் seeds. சூட்டெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from the residuum of the margosa berry. மருத்தெண்ணெய், s. Medical oil. குருந்தெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from குருந்தம் seeds. இலுப்பெண்ணெய், s. The இலுப் பை oil. வேப்பெண்ணெய், s. Margosa oil. தேங்காயெண்ணெய், s. Cocoanut oil. வடியெண்ணெய், s. Clarified medical oil. கொதியெண்ணெய், s. A species of boiled oil, used for medicinal purposes. புளியெண்ணெய், s. A medical oil. புன்னையெண்ணெய், s. The oil extracted from புன்னை seeds. நல்லெண்ணெய், s. Sesamum oil used for the hair and the skin, &c. மரவெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted from wood. தெளிவெண்ணெய், s. Clear margosa oil poured off from the sediment. ஊற்றெண்ணெய், s. Oil extracted by pressing or pounding the seeds. மீனெண்ணெய், s. Fish oil. எள்ளுண்டை--எள்ளுருண்டை, s. A pastry made into balls, said to be a very strengthening food, ஓர்சிற்றுண்டி. எள்ளுந்தண்ணீருமிறைக்க, inf. To pour water to the manes of deceased persons on sesamum seeds and sacrificial grass held in the hand. எள்ளோரை, s. Sesamum and rice boiled and mixed with ghee--one of the சித்திரான்னம். காட்டெள்ளு, s. A kind of sesamum found in uncultivated places. காரெள்ளு, s. The common எள். 2. A distinct species of எள். பேரெள்ளு, s. A large kind of sesamum. கடலெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum. வெள்ளெள்ளு, s. A species of sesamum bearing white seed. சிற்றெள்ளு, s. A small kind of sesamum. 25)

ōmam (p. 84) s. A burnt offering, the casting of clarified butter, the nine kinds of grain, &c., into the sacred fire, accompanied with prayers, &c. It forms an essential part of the marriage ceremony and is performed at the அந்தியேட்டி, a chief ceremony for deceased persons and in the worship of the temple, &c. In poetry the burnt sacrifice of animals, யாகம். Wils. p. 98. HOMA. ஓமகுண்டம், s. A hole made in the ground for sacrificial fire. Wils. p. 78. HOMAKUNDA. ஓமசாந்தி, s. Mitigating, propitiating by fire, அக்கினிசாந்தி. 2. Burnt offering at a marriage to propitiate the god of fire who is thus invoked as a witness of the transaction, விவாகத்திற்செய்யுமோம சாந்தி. 3. Any additional sacrifice performed to obtain pardon for having omitted certain ceremonies in a sacrifice, யாகசாந்தி. ஓமஞ்செய்ய, inf. To perform a burnt sacrifice, அக்கினிகாரியஞ்செய்ய. ஓமதிரவியம், s. The requisites for a sacrifice including the firewood, &c., யாகஉபகரணம். ஓமப்பொடி, s. The ashes of the ஓமம்--deemed sacred, and used for smearing the person, யாகநீறு. ஓமமண்டபம், s. A sacrificial hall, யாகசாலை. ஓமம்வளர்க்க, inf. To kindle and feed the sacrificial fire which should never be suffered to go out; to attend to this is the special duty of the student or பிரமசாரி. ஓமவிறகு, s. Sacrificial fire-wood of different kinds. See சமித்து. ஓமாக்கினி, s. Sacrificial fire, ஓ மத்தழல். Wils. p. 18. HOMAGNI. ஓமல், s. [vul.] A rumor, report, spreading as a rumor, ஊர்ப்பேச்சு. ஊருக்கோமல்வீட்டுக்குவயிற்றெரிச்சல். He has the name of being a rich man, but in his house there is want and misery. ஓமற்படுதல்--ஊரோமல், v. noun. Spreading as a rumor, being rumored. உன்னாலிந்தாகசியம்ஊரோமலாச்சுதே. The secret has been bruited throughout the town by you. 98)

cāṇi (p. 174) s. Dung of cows and buffaloes, and very rarely of some other animals, ஆப்பிமுதலியன. 2. [in combination.] A farrier, horse-doctor, குதிரைச்சாணி; which see. (c.) சாணிதெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle macerated cow-dung, for purification, in the morning before the house--also inside, before and after eating--after the entrance of an impure person-around a corn-heap for threshing, &c. சாணிதட்ட, inf. To make cow-dung into cakes for fuel. சாணிப்பால், s. The juice or essence extracted from cow-dung. சாணிப்பிணம், s. A useless, worthless, dull fellow, (lit.) a mere mass of cowdung. சாணிமெழுக, inf. To smear with cow-dung--as a floor, &c. சாணிபோட, inf. To evacuate dung --as a cow or buffaloe. 2. To sprinkle macerated cow-dung--as சாணிதெளிக்க. சாணிக்கெண்டை, s. [prov.] A kind of carp fish, which when boiled in unpleasant to the taste, ஓர்மீன். 91) *

cāttu (p. 176) கிறேன், சாத்தினேன், வேன், சாத்த, v. a. To daub, smear, anoint--as sandal, or other unguents, சந்தனமுதலியஅப்ப. 2. To put a cloth, an ornament, or flowers on an idol, a holy personage, &c., ஆடைமுதலிய அ ணிய. 3. To slap, strike, tap, beat, அடிக்க. 4. To shut, put to, to close--as a door, &c., கதவுமுதலியமூட. 5. (impr. for சார்த்து.) To place against, ஒன்றின்மேற்சார்த்த. (c.) சாத்தாதவர், s. (pl.) Those who do not wear the sacred thread, or the tuft of hair. A mixed class of Vaishnuvas--opposed, to சாத்தினவர். They have their principal occupation, as flower-gatherers, minstrels or mendicants. (R.) Compare சாத்தானியன். சாத்திக்கழிக்க, inf. To adorn the idol with flower or garlands, and afterwards remove them. சாத்திக்கொள்ள, inf. [prov.] To dress one's self with garlands, costly attire, &c., in contempt. சாத்துப்படி--சாத்துகாப்பு, s. Flowers, jewels and vestments as the attire of an idol. 2. [in burlesque.] A good drubbing, நல்லடி. சாத்துக்கவி, s. A poem prefixed or affixed to a work, by a different hand. சாத்துநாற்று--சாத்துநாறு, s. Young plants planted in the place of those which have died. (R.) திருக்கடைக்காப்புச்சாத்த, inf. To shut the door of the temple, கோயிற்கதவுமூட. 2. To finish a poem addressed to a deity by making the last verse. See under திரு. வில்வஞ்சாத்த, inf. To cast the fragrant leaves of the வில்வம் tree at the feet of the idol. See வில்வம். 41) *

Unguents for the hair, hair-ointment. (p.) செஞ்சாந்து, s. A fragrant ointment of a red sandal. 2. Paste of red sandal used in offerings to the sun. மூடுசாந்து, s. [prov.] An entire roof of plaster. See மூடு, v. வெண்சாந்து, s. White mortar. சாந்தணிய, inf. To put on sandal marks. சாந்தின்குழம்பு, s. Odoriferous ointment. (R.) சாந்துவாரி, s. A domestic scavenger. சாந்துப்பொடி, s. Perfume in powders, pulvil. (p.) சாந்துப்பொட்டு, s. [com. சந்தனப்பொ ட்டு.] A spot of sandal or other paste on the forehead. See பொட்டு. சாந்துக்காறை, s. An ornament. See காறை. 2) *

[prov.] To immerse itself in ashes, as a brooding hen; to bathe in ashes. சாம்பல்வண்ணம்--சாம்பனிறம், s. Ashcolor, grey color. சாம்பல்வாழை--சாம்பல்மொந்தன், s. [loc.] An ash-colored plantain tree. சாம்பற்பூக்க, inf. To form, as ashes on coals, or the appearance of ashes on fruits, or on the body; to grow ashy. (c.) சாம்பற்பூசுணிக்காய், s. A kind of pumpkin. cēmam (p. 208) s. (also க்ஷேமம்.) Preserving, protection, safety, preservation, காவல். 2. Safeguard, defence, security, தஞ்சம். 3. Hoard, treasure buried, things reserved, புதைபொருள் 4. Binding and shrouding a corpse for burning or interment, சவச்சேமம். 5. (c.) Happiness, well-being, welfare, இன்பம். 6. A secure place, a room, well guarded, அரணானவிடம். 7. A prison, cage, dungeon, or subterraneous prison, காராக் கிரகம். 8. A guard-house, சிறைச்சாலை. சேமம்புகினுஞ்சாமத்துறங்கு. Though you are in a prison sleep only three hours. சேமக்காரன், s. [prov.] A guard. 2. A trusty, confidential person. 3. A thrifty. careful person. சேமங்களைவிசாரிக்க, inf. as சேதிவிசா ரிக்க.) To inquire after one's welfare. சேமங்கொள்ள, inf. [prov.] To smear a place with cowdung, lay a corpse there and dress it, for the funeral pile, or the grave. சேமகாலம், s. Time of prosperity or plenty--opposite to சாமகாலம். சேமதருமம், s. Substantial, or permanent merit, virtue, &c.--oppos. to மா யாதருமம். சேமத்திரவியம்-சேமநிதி, s. Gold, gems, &c, kept with great care. (p.) சேமத்தில்வைக்க, inf. [in ancient history.] To put in custody--as children born under an unlucky horoscope, who are kept from the sight of their parents a certain number of years, according to the prescription of an astrologer. 2. tṭvu (p. 221) கிறேன், தடவினேன், வேன், தடவ, v. a. and v. n. To stroke, embrace, fondle, to soothe, by patting or stroking, தடவர. 2. To grope, to feel one's way with the hands or feet as in the dark, to feel about, தெரியாமற்தடவ. 3. To anoint--as with liniment, to smear softly, to spread on lightly, எண்ணெய்முதலியதடவ. 4. To bedaub, besmear; to dirty, பூச. 5. To play on a lute with a bow, வீணைவாசிக்க. 6. To measure out very scantily, to strike off the measure too closely, முகந்தளந்துதடவ. 7. (fig.) To wave in the air, as tops or branches of trees, or banners, as if feeling around, நுனியசைய,--Note. Stroking the back shows affection; the feet, submission; the face or chin, pity, affection, or supplication. தடவக்கொடுக்க, inf. to let one stroke the back. 2. [prov.] To yield too much, to be too submissive. தடவிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To stroke a person, beast, &c. 2. To give short measure. இருந்துதடவ, inf. To sit groping; from great age, blindness, &c. தடவிக்கொண்டுதிரிய, inf. To walk about groping. தடவியளக்க, inf. To measure scantily, with the measure. தட்டித்தடவிவர, inf. To come stumbling and groping. தாடியைத்தடவ, inf. To stroke the chin as supplicating favors. வீடெல்லாந்தடவிப்பார். Search for it all over the house. எல்லாந்தடவிக்கொண்டுபோய்விட்டான். He has scraped up all, and gone. அவனைத்தலைதடவிப்போட்டார்கள்.....They have stripped him of every thing. மரமெல்லாந்தடவிக்கொண்டுவந்துவிட்டான். He has climbed every tree; i. e. has plucked and brought away every thing. 73)

tṭi (p. 222) க்கிறது, த்தது, க்கும், க்க, v. n. To thicken as a liquid, be inspissated, to congeal, உறைய. 2. To cohere; to form as primitive, subtile matter, into atoms, atoms into moulds or bodies; to consolidate, to assume a tangible form, திரண்டு தடிக்க. 3. To swell as the flesh from a stroke, to form a wale, வீங்க. 4. To grow large, full, plump as the breasts, &c., to become stout as a person, பூரிக்க. 5. To delay, linger, to be protracted, தாமதிக்க. 6. To become heavier, to be aggravated or enhanced--as an accusation, அதிகரிக்க. 7. [in burlesque.] To enlarge--as in pregnancy, புடைக்க. 8. To thicken, harden, indurate as the skin by slight poison, the contact of a caterpillar, &c., கடியினாற் றடிக்க. 9. To be thick, stout, hard, stiff --as a board, &c., வைரப்பட. In this sense used only in some parts of the verb. தடிக்கக்காய்ச்ச, inf. To thicken by boiling. தடிக்கப்பூச, inf. To daub, smear or paint thickly. தடித்தஆள், s. A stout, thick person. தடித்தபால், s. Thick milk. தடித்தமை, s. Thick ink, or paint. நாக்குத்தடிக்க, inf. To grow stiff or rigid, as the tongue by chewing betel. காரியந்தடித்துப்போயிற்று. The affair has become more aggravated. 8) *
