arukku (p. 25) கிறேன், அருக்கினேன், வேன், அருக்க, v. a. To diminish, குறைக்க. 2. To make scarce, reduce in quantity, சுருக்க. 3. v. n. To keep back from others use, (as keeping up grain, making it scarce and dear,) to stand out in bargaining, stickle, haggle, அருக்காணிபண்ண. 4. To grudge, spare reluctantly, give sparingly, show unwillingness to serve or benefit another, அழுக்காறடைய. (திரிகடுகம்.) நீரருக்கிமோர்பெருக்கி நெய்யுருக்கியுண்பவர்தம் பே ருரைக்கப்போமே பிணி. He who drinks his water after boiling, his curds diluted, and his butter made ghee, will find sickness flee at the sound of his name. அருக்கு, v. noun. Scarceness, அ ருமை. 2. Haggling in a bargain, reluctance to do a kindness, &c., அருக்காணி. 3. Fearing, அஞ்சுகை. 5) *

il (p. 55) . A form of the fifth case, (see இன்), ஐந்தனுருபு, which denotes. 1. Removal, withdrawal, நீங்கல். (a) Literally --as தமரிற்றீர்ந்தான், he has left his relations, i. e. for ascetic life. (b) (fig.) In which it expresses speciality, disparity, &c., and includes the comparative degree --as அரசரிற்பெரியரந்தணர், the Brahman caste is superior to the royal. 2. Similitude, ஒப்பு--as திறல்வேனுதியிற்பூத்தகேணி. A tank whose flowers resemble the points of mighty lances. 3. The bearing of a place, எல்லை--as கருவூரில்வடக்கு, north of Caroor.--Note. This form of the fifth case is peculiar to the poetic dialect. 4. The primitive cause, ஏது--as பொன்னிற் செய்தமுடி, a crown made of gold. 24)

uṇṭi (p. 59) s. Food, sustenance, eatables, உணவு. 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. The food of carnivorous animals, இரை. (நிகண்டு and திவாகரம்.) 4. (பாரதிதீ.) The food of birds and beasts in general, பற வைவிலங்கிவற்றினுணவு. Four kinds of eating are enumerated, viz.: 1. உண்டல், eating without mastication--as boiled rice, &c. 2. தின்றல், masticating, chewing--as meat, curries, &c. 3. நக்கல், licking--as honey, molasses, lapping. 4. பருகல், drinking, sucking--as a child. Sometimes a fifth is added, viz.: மென்றல், chewing--as spices, pungents, leaves, &c. kept in the mouth. உண்டிசுருங்குதல்பெண்டிர்க்கழகு. It is becoming in a woman to eat little. பேருண்டி, s. A principal meal-as dinner, &c., போசனம். 2. Eating to excess, gluttony, gormandizing, பெருந் தீன். சிற்றுண்டி, s. A light meal--as luncheon, tiffin, பலகாரம். 2. Eating sparingly, சிறுதீன். 3. A kind of small cake, அப்பவருக்கத்தொன்று. 122)

ulvi (p. 66) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. and n. To be sparing in order to leave a supply for others, to forbear, or be reluctant, &c., be bashful in eating, &c., உலோபமாயிருக்க. 2. To evince diffidence in accepting favors, gifts, &c.; to be diffident, or backward in coming into company, கூசியொழுக. 3. To restrain one's self, forbear, ஒறுக்க.--Note. This word seems to be a causative of உலவு in a contracted form. உலவியரமற்சாப்பிடும். Eat without restraint, take as much as you like. சாப்பாட்டையுலவிக்க. To eat food sparingly. அவருடைய முகத்துக்காகவுலவித்துவிட்டுவிட்டேன். One his account I forbore (to act as otherwise I would have done). இங்கேசாப்பிடவுலவிப்பானேன்? Why should you be unwilling to eat here? தன்வயிற்றைத்தானுலவிக்கலாமா? Ought one to deprive himself of necessary food? 8)

ulvu (p. 66) கிறேன், உலவினேன், வேன், உலவ, v. n. To be modest, reluctant, sparing, parsimonious, கூசிக்குறைக்க 2. [a contraction of உலாவு.] To move about, walk, or ride about for recreation, or exercise. உலவலீரெனவோதுகின்றார்சிலர். Some said, Don't be afraid to eat. (ஸ்காந்.) உலவாவுலவாருமோதம். Waves which undulate without cessation. (அலங்காரம்.) உலவைவைகலுமூசலினீர்மையார். Their daily going and coming resembles the vibrations of a swing. 9)

ekkcckkm (p. 73) s. [vul.] Confusion, jumble, huddle, disorder, தாறுமாறு. 2. (Tel. எக்கஸக்கஎமு.) Unevenness, irregularity, ஒழுங்கின்மை. 3. Difference, Disparity, வித்தியாசம். 4. Scorn, derision, நிந்தை. எக்கச்சக்கமானஇடம் பத்திரமாய்ப்போ. This is an uneven, dangerous place, go cautiously. காரியமெக்கச்சக்கமாய்வந்திருக்கின்றது. The thing is ended in confusion. The affair has turned out disastrously; some danger is apprehended. எக்கச்சக்கமாய்ப்பேச, inf. To insult a person, use uncivil language. 2. To give an indirect answer, to speak at random. எக்கச்சக்கமானஆள், s. A faithless person. 2. An indecent person. 3. One who confuses every thing. எக்கச்சக்கம்பண்ண, inf. To derange things, put in confusion, huddle, jumble, தாறுமாறுசெய்ய. 2. To be insincere, to act differently from one's professions, or contrary to instructions, அகடவிகடஞ்செய்ய. 7)

ēktēcm (p. 76) s. Rareness, scarceness, a rare, extraordinary or prodigious occurrence, அருமை. 2. Anomaly, difference, excentricity, வேற்றுமை. 3. A blunder, a mistake; difference as above or below the mark; greater or less, disparity; unfitness, incongruity, disagreement, inconsistency, ஒவ்வாமை. 4. Exception to a general rule, ஒரோவிடத்துவிதிபிறழ்வு. 5. Undefinedness, uncertainty, fickleness, சந்தேகம். ஏகதேசத்திலுநினைத்திருக்கவில்லை. I never even once thought of it. ஏகதேசமில்லை. It is without error, not different, exact. இந்தநிலமேகதேசமாயிருக்கிறது. This ground is uneven. அதற்குமிதற்குமிகவுமேகதேசம். There is a great difference between that and this. இங்கேநின்றேகதேசமாய்ப்பேசப்படாது. Don't use scurrilous language here. 11)

ēṟṟm (p. 79) s. Rise, ascent, acclivity, உயர்வு. 2. Superiority, excellence, pre-eminence, மேன்மை. 3. Fame, புகழ். 4. Excess, preponderance, மிகுதி. 5. Increase, பெருக் கம். 6. The flow of the tide, நீரேற்றம். 7. A lever or shaft for drawing water for irrigation, ஏற்றமரம். ஏற்றக்கால், s. The supporters of a beam for irrigation, துலாவைத்தாங்குங்கால். ஏற்றக்குறைச்சல்--ஏற்றத்தாழ்ச்சி, ஏற்றத்தாழ்வு, s. Superiority and inferiority, highness and lowness, உயர்வு தாழ்வு. 2. Disparity, difference, disagreement, that which is greater or smaller, &c., வேற்றுமை. ஏற்றக்கோல், s. A bamboo pole with which water is drawn from a well, ஏற்றக்கழி. ஏற்றச்சால், s. A bucket used for irrigation, நிரிறைக்குஞ்சால். ஏற்றமடல், s. The supporting timbers on which the well-sweep oscillates, being generally attached to a pillar which is fixed in the ground. ஏற்றமரம், s. The well-sweep, the picotta. 85)

oṭukku (p. 81) கிறேன், ஒடுக்கினேன், வே ன், ஒடுக்க, v. a. To reduce, compress, bring into a narrower compass, condense, to lessen, bring down--as another's pride, to keep down, keep under, அடக்க. 2. To press, oppress, tyrannize, vex, வருத்த. 3. To reduce the system by medicine or a sparing diet, உடம்பையொடுக்க. 4. To involve one in another--as the elements, cause to disappear--as the worlds, &c., at the close of an age, பூதங்களைலயிக்கச்செய்ய. 5. To close, to finish as a work, the harvest, &c., முடிக்க. 6. To pack in, to put in, to put things close in a bag, a box or other receptacle, செறிக்க. உலகப்பற்றையொவ்வொன்றாயொடுக்க. To relinquish worldly attachments one by one. ஒடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To compress and tie a thing close. 2. To tuck up the skirts and fasten the end behind-as in wet weather. 3. To hem an ola basket, fan, &c. ஒடக்கித்தட்ட, inf. To make a metal utensil thicker and narrower by beating. ஒடுக்கித்தைக்க, inf. To make a garment smaller. ஒடுக்கிவெட்ட, inf. To hew timber reducing the breadth. ஒடுக்குவாய், s. Distorted mouth, கோணல்வாய். வீட்டையொடுக்கிக்கட்ட, inf. To build a house narrow. உடம்பையொடுக்க, inf. To reduce the body by eating sparingly. 2. To contract the body--as a tiger, a cat, &c., to reduce the body to a smaller compass --as in a leaping, sneaking, or creeping posture. செலவையொடுக்க--செலவையொ டுக்கிப்பிடிக்க. inf. To retrench expenses. 2. To live frugally, sparingly, &c. வயிற்றையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the appetite, to reduce the quantity of food in order to save money. புலனையொடுக்க, inf. To restrain the senses--as ascetics or otherwise; to mortify the senses, passions, &c. 2. To call home the thoughts and fix them on divine things. ஒடுக்கு, v. noun. Contracting, closing, compression, narrowness, அடக் கம். 2. s. A corner to creep into, இடுக்கு. ஒடுக்கிடம், s. A corner, a narrow or confined place, மூலை. 2. A recess, a hiding place, மறைவிடம். ஒடுக்குச்சீட்டு--ஒடுக்குத்துண்டு, s. A receipt given by government for money, வரிச்சீட்டு. பணவொடுக்கு, v. noun. [prov.] A remittance of money. 48)

oṟu (p. 84) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To reduce, suppress, subject, restrain the senses, desires, &c., to mortify the body, curb the appetites, to pinch, stint or deny one's self, to suppress the passions, அடக்க. 2. To afflict, distress, cause pain to one's self or others, அலைக்க. 3. To punish, chastise, தண்டிக்க. (கு. 964.) 4. To rebuke, reprove, கடிந்துகொள்ள. 5. To dislike, to be disgusted with, வெறுக்க. (p.) 6. v. n. To become scarce and dear, to fail or be scanty--as crops, rain, &c., to be sparing, குறைய. கொலையிற்கொடியாரைவேந்தொறுத்தல். Punishing the guilty by death--the prerogative of a prince. (குறள்.) அகமொறுக்கும். Corn will be scarce. அவனொருத்தருக்குமொறுக்கிறதில்லை. He submits to no one's reproof; he does not brook censure. கையொறாமற்கொடுக்கிறான். He gives liberally. அன்னத்தையொறு. Abstain from taking food. சற்றும்வாயொறுக்கிறானில்லை. He does not at all restrain himself (in speaking). 2. He does not conform to the prescribed diet. உடம்பினையொறுத்துநோற்பார். Those who mortify their bodies and do penance. (ஸ்காந்.) கொடுஞ்சொற்றாயரொறுப்பவும். When the mother rebukes with sharp language-ஒறுத்துக்கொண்டிருக்க, inf. To be afflicted. விலையொறுக்க, inf. [prov.] To become dear. மழையொறுத்தகாலம், s. A drought. வயிற்றையொறுக்க, inf. To pinch one's self. ஒறுப்பு, v. noun. Scarcity, dearness, ஒறுக்கை. 2. Restraint of the passions, self-mortification, self-denial, உட ல்வருத்துகை. 3. Chastisement, punishment, correction, தண்டிப்பு. 4. Rebuke, reproof, கடிவு. 5. Dislike, disgust, வெறு ப்பு. 6. kiḷḷu (p. 112) கிறேன், கிள்ளினேன், வேன், கிள்ள, v. a. To pinch with the finger and thump, the nails, &c., கையாற்கிள்ள. 2. To pinch off, to pluck, to nip, to pick--as a leaf, &c., இலைமுதலியகிள்ள. 3. To hold, take up, carry, &.--as with the beak, the fingers and thump, &c.; to take up a little, a pinch, &c., கொஞ்சமாயெடுக்க. வயிறுகிள்ளுகிறது. I am pinched with hunger. கிள்ளாக்கு, s. A bit of leaf, especially an ola given as a token of being sent by some superior, அதிகாரநறுக்கு. 2. A note of hand, a bit of leaf, a token from a person in authority--as a passport, warrant, letter of introduction, &c., உத்தார ச்சீட்டு. கிள்ளாப்பிறாண்டு, s. [prov.] A kind of child's play, pinching, ஓர்விளையாட்டு. 2. fig. Want of attention to guests, at a feast; distribution to them in small quantities, அலட்சியம். கிள்ளாப்பிறாண்டுபண்ண, inf. To supply guests too sparingly. 2. To take sparingly at a feast from modesty, delicacy, &c. 3. To give stintingly in charity, &c. கிள்ளிக்காட்ட, inf. To give a hint, a signal; also a summery, &c.; lit. a pinch. கிள்ளிக்கொடுக்க, inf. To give a little from a great quantity. 2. To give but little, a pinch, &c. கிள்ளித்தெளிக்கமாட்டான். local. He will not even give a jerk. கிள்ளிப்பிடுங்க, inf. To pinch and pluck off. கிள்ளிவிட, inf. To stir up; to excite, to instigate. கிள்ளிவைக்க, inf. To set or take a little from a heap--as the small mnemonic heaps in measuring grain. கிள்ளுகீரை, s. Greens plucked off from the root. அவன்உனக்குக்கிள்ளுக்கீரையோ. Is he a mere youngster, that you may cuff him as you please? கிள்ளுக்கீரைப்பண்ண, inf. To insult, to treat insultingly. கிள்ளுக்கீரையாய்நினைத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak contemptibly. கிள்ளு, v. noun. A pinch, a nip; a little piece of betel-leaf, tobacco, &c., கிள்ளப் பட்டதுண்டு. 2. A pinch in quantity, துணி க்கை. கிள்ளுங்கிழியுமாய்ப்போகக்கடவது. Deficiency in a month. குறைமாதத்துப்பிள்ளை, s. A child of premature birth. குறையுடல்--குறைத்தலை, s. A headless body, which is said sometimes to dance on the field of battle; trunks divested of heads. குறைக்கொள்ளி, s. A brand partially consumed. குறைச்சால், s. The balk in ploughing, உழவறாவிடம். See சால். குறைவயிறு, s. Stomach partially supplied; hunger not fully satisfied. குறைவயிறாய்சாப்பிட்டேன். I ate sparingly. குறைவேலை, s. An incomplete, unfinished work. தலைக்குறை, s. cāṭṭu (p. 174) கிறேன், சாட்டினேன், வேன், சாட் ட, v. a. To transfer as a debt; to devolve, lay or cast on; to assign unto, ascribe to, ஒப்பிக்க. 2. To impute, to accuse, to attribute falsely, to impugn, குற்றஞ்சாற்ற. 3. To make excuse or pretext of a thing, to act under cover of something else, to evade, போக்குச்சொல்ல. (c.) 4. (R.) To beat or strike, அடிக்க. கோவிலைச்சாட்டிவயிறுவளர்க்கிறான். He maintains himself under the pretence of serving (begging for) the temple. சாட்டிக்கழிக்க, inf. To shift off; to get rid of by a reference to some other thing; to manage artfully. 2. To give sparingly, to distribute scantily. சாட்டிக்கொள்ள, inf. To take on one a debt due by another, to take the responsibility of a debt. சாட்டிவிட, inf. To transfer a debt to another. சாட்டு, v. noun. Consigning, transferring, ஒப்பிக்கை. 2. ciṟuku (p. 189) --சிறு, கிறேன், சிறுகினேன், வேன், சிறுக, v. n. To grow small, shorten, diminish, to be reduced, சுருங்க. 2. To be small, to appear diminutive, to be made small. short, சிறியதாக. 3. To be impoverished, to sink in circumstances, தரித்திரமடைய. 4. To degenerate in morals, or religious practice, &c., சீர்குன்ற. சிறுக, inf. (adverbially.)
