ōtu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஓதினேன், வேன், ஓத, v. a. To recite the vedas with appropriate intonations, aspirations, &c.--being one of the six duties of the brahman; to chant a sacred eulogy in the temple, வேத மோத. 2. To read, learn, recite audibly in order to commit to memory, படிக்க. 3. To speak, say, declare, சொல்ல. 4. To repeat prayers--as the Romanists and Mohomedans, செபமுச்சரிக்க. 5. The eulogist of the god of the temple whose duty it is to chant the verses directed by the attending priest, திருப்பாட்டுப்பாடுவோன். ஓதுவானெல்லாமுழுவான்றலைக்கடையில். The scholar must wait at the backdoor of the ploughman; i. e. learning is dependent on the plough. ஓதுவிக்க, inf. To teach the vedas, வேதங்கற்பிக்க. 2. The cloth with which the sacrificial pot is adorned. கும்பஸ்தாபனம், s. Setting up sacred pots for worship, religious ceremonies, &c. கும்பதக்கணை-கும்பதட்சிணை, s. Money for the sacrificial pot as an offering to the gods, and taken by the officiating priest. கும்பாபிஷேகம், s. The consecration of an idol, a king, &c., by pouring water from the sacrificial pots with appropriate ceremonies, &c., கும்பநீரபிஷேகம். கும்பமெடுக்க, inf. To carry in procession the sacred pot with appropriate ceremonies. கும்பம்நிறுத்த--கும்பம்வைக்க--கும்பம் ஸ்்தாபிக்க, inf. To set up a sacrificial pot for worship. கும்பம்போட--கும்பங்்கொட்ட, inf. One without knowledge, learning, strength, vigor, property, merit of austerities, &c. சாரஞ்சுட, inf. To burn the milkhedge, prickly pear shrub, &c., to get their ashes for making lye. சாரத்தண்ணீர், s. Lye, காரத்தண்ணீர். சாரந்தெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle lye on clothes to whiten them. சாரத்தின்சத்துரு, s. An egg, from its neutralizing qualities, முட்டை. சாரக்கட்டை, s. A temporary wall, made use of in turning an arch. (R.) சாரத்துளை, s. Scaffold-holes in a building. சாரம்போட--சாரங்கட்ட, inf. To erect a scaffolding. (c.) சாரஸ்திரி, s. [Com. சோரஸ்திரி.] A vicious woman, an adulteress, விபசாரி. (p.) சாரத்துவம், s. Adultery, விபசாரம். சாரவறுதி--சாரவிறுதி, v. noun. [prov.] Lightness, slightness--as of a blow, a fall, &c.; [ex சாரம், strength, et அறுதி or இறுதி, wanting.] சாரவறுதியாய்ப்பட்டது. It hit him but slightly. சாரவாக்கியம், s. [in astron.] A table or any tabular number in it for counting the progress of the planets.--Note. A copper needle; sometimes used as an instrument of torture thrust into the fingers. செப்போடு, s. Tiles of copper, used for roofing, (temples, &c.) செம்பிலேதண்ணீர்கொடுக்க, inf. To hand the water pot to the guests to rinse their mouths, as a notice that food is ready. செம்புக்களிம்பு, s. Verdigris of copper. செம்புக்காசு-செம்புநாணயம், s. Copper coins. See காசு. செம்புப்பற்று, s. Alloy of copper in gold. செம்புமலை, s. A mountain with copper ore. செம்பூறல், v. noun. [prov.] Oxidation of copper. செம்பூறிப்போக, inf. To deceive, to tantalize; from the story of a buffoon who obeyed the command literally, and showed water to his master's horse, but did not suffer him to drink. தண்ணீர்காண, inf. To appear or gush out, as water in a newly dug well. தண்ணீர்குடித்தபாடம்--தண்ணீர்ப்பா டம், s. An expression used to denote intimate acquaintance. 2. A lesson well learnt. 3. A science well mastered. (c.) தண்ணீர்க்கண்டம், s. Accident by water. See கண்டம். தண்ணீர்கலசம்-தண்ணீர்க்குடம், s. A water-pot. தண்ணீர்க்காரன், s. (fem. தண்ணீர்க்காரி. vul. தண்ணீர்க்காரிச்சி.) A man who draws or brings water. தண்ணீர்க்கால், s. A water-course, a channel for water. தண்ணீர்தெளிக்க, inf. To sprinkle water for the purification of sheep, for sacrifice. 2. (fig.) To give one over to his own way. நான்அவனைத்தண்ணீர்தெளித்துவிட்டுவிட்டேன். I have left him to himself. தண்ணீர்த்தவனம்--தண்ணீர்விடாய், s. Thirst. தண்ணீர்த்துறை, s. The entrance to a tank, river, &c., where men or cattle go for water. தண்ணீர்பட்டபாடு, v. noun. Like water; i. e. profuse, plentiful, free. (c.) தண்ணீர்ப்பந்தல்--தண்ணீர்ச்சாலை, s. A shed where water, butter-milk, lemonade, &c., are furnished. தண்ணீர்ப்பிடி--தண்ணீர்ப்பிடிப்பு, v. noun. Being watery as food or fruits. 2. Containing water, as pustules. 3. Being suffused with watery humors, as the body. 4. The limit of the water in a tank. See சீர்ப்பிடி. தண்ணீர்ச்சாரை, s. A kind of ratsnake living in tanks, as நீர்ச்சாரை. தண்ணீர்ப்பகை, s. Hurtfulness of some kinds of water. (Rare.) தண்ணீர்ப்பாம்பு, s. A water snake, whose bite is not venomous. தண்ணீர்மாற, s. [prov.] To lead water into garden-beds, to trees, &c. (c.) தண்ணீர்வார்க்க, s. To give water to travellers from a water shed. 2. To pour water for a low caste person to drink, who is not allowed to touch the cup. தலைக்குத்தண்ணீர்வார்த்தல். Bathing a girl with appropriate ceremonies, on her becoming marriageable; done by aged matrons, not widows, who are not allowed to be present. தண்ணீரொத்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To agree with one's constitution, as water. (c.) தண்ணீரோத--தண்ணீர்மந்திரிக்க, inf. To consecrate, or enchant water to be given to a woman in labor, &c., to dispel the effects of the evil eye, &c. தண்ணீர்விட்டான், appel. n.
