akattiyaṉ (p. 2) --அகஸ்தியன், s. A poet and sage celebrated in the Ramayanam, Skandam and other works of antiquity. He is regarded as the former of the Tamil language which he is said to have learned of Skanda the son of Siva. He is also the reputed author of several works, still extant, in whole or in part, in the Tamil language; such as, a Grammar, Materia Medica, a work on Astrology, Astronomy, and several essays on the unity of the divine being, as opposed to the popular system of polytheism, &c. He is regarded as the son of both Mythra and Varuna by Urvasi; is represented to be of very short stature, and to have been born in a water jar. He is famed for having compressed and swallowed the ocean, for the sake of the celestials. Other wonderful stories are also told of him, and received with undoubted credence. He is considered as the regent of the star Canopus, குறுமுனி. Wils. p. 5. AGASTYA. அகத்தியர்குழம்பு, s. A famous compound cathartic. See குழம்பு. 6)

amplm (p. 20) s. An open building in a village for public concourse or for transacting affairs of justice, சபை. 2. Open space, public, வெளி. 3. All ornamented or painted room, a room containing pictures and statues, சித்திரகூடம். (p.) அம்பலம்பண்ணுகிறாயோ. Do you transact public affairs? ஏழைபேச்சுஅம்பலமேறுமோ. Will the poor be heard in the court? 2. Justice is overruled by power. அரைச்சொற்கொண்டம்பலமேறலாமோ. Can one partially informed come before an assembly; i. e. for discussion. அம்பலக்காரன், s. A chief of the Karller caste, as கள்ளச்சாதித்தலைவன். 2. He who publishes the decrees of the assembly. (p.) அம்பலமாக, inf. To be left to the wide world, be abandoned. 2. To be emaciated--as one in disease, வடிவங்கெட. உருக்கொள்ள, inf. To become formed, or conceived in the womb, கருக் கொள்ள. 2. To assume shape, வடிவமெடு க்க. 3. [prov.] To possess a person--as a demon for the sake of uttering oracles, ஆவேசங்கொள்ள. உருச்செபிக்க--உருப்போட, inf. To repeat a course of prayers, &c, மந்திர முருப்போட. உருத்தரிக்க, inf. To become shaped, &c.--as the fetus when advancing towards maturity, வடிவங்கொள்ள. உருநாட்டு, s. [prov.] An idol, statue, விக்கிரகம்; [ex நாட்டு.] உருப்பட, inf. To be formed, shaped, உருவாக. 2. To prosper, rise to eminence, சீர்ப்பட. உருப்படி, s. A piece, any article counted. இங்கேநாற்பதுஉருப்படிசீலையிருக்கிறது. Here are forty pieces of cloth. பத்துருப்படி. Ten things, articles, utensils. உருப்படுத்த, inf. To form in the womb, கருவிலுருவாக்க. 2. To mould, shape, to form--as the work of a smith, a mason, &c., உருவாக்க. உருப்போட, inf. To reiterate incantations for expelling a disease, poison, &c. 2. To repeat or rehearse a lesson frequently, in order to learn it by heart. உருமாற, s. To change one's shape, metamorphose one's self as the Rishis are reputed to do, வேற்றுருக்கொ ள்ள. 2. To become changed in countenance--as by disease, &c., சரீரம்வேறுபட. உருவழிய, inf. To become disfigured by disease, to become deformed. உருவாக, inf. To obtain form, shape, &c., வடிவமாக. உருவாக்க, inf. To form, shape, fashion, make, mould--as the work of a smith or mason, உருச்செய்ய. 2. To repair, complete, சீர்ப்படுத்த. உருவிலி, s. Kama, காமன். (p.) உருவில்லாதது, s. A thing without form or shape, without beauty. உருவிழக்க, inf. To lose one's proper appearance, become changed in shape, color, &c., வடிவமிழக்க. உருவுவமம், s. [in rhetoric.] A kind of comparison from analogy--as when a ship at sea is compared to an elephant in an army, வடிவுவமை. உருவெடுக்க, inf. To become formed, conceived in the womb, (lit.) to take a body or form--as the soul according to the deeds of former births, வடிவெடுக்க. 2. To assume a shape--as in transmigrations, incarnations, and transient appearances of a deity, &c., வேஷங்கொள்ள. உருவெளி, s. An imaginary appearance of a person, or other objects, a visionary object, an illusion, chiefly applied to the supposed sight of an absent lover, உருவெளித்தோற்றம். (p.) உருவெளிக்காட்சி--உருவெளித் தோற்றம்--உருவெளிப்பாடு, s. The imaginary appearance of an absent lover. See above. உருவெளிப்பட, inf. To appear-as a visionary object, உருவம்வெள்ளிடை யிற்றோன்ற. உருவேற, inf. To rise or increase in numbers--as the repetition of prayers or incantations, மந்திரவுருவதிகரிக்க. 2. To be possessed of a demon for the utterance of oracles, ஆவேசமேற. 3. (fig.) To become furious, to fall into a fit, மூர்க்கமதிகரிக்க. உருவேறத்திருவேறும். Divine power will be acquired in proportion to the reiteration of the incantations. உருவேற்படுத்த, inf. To form, to fashion, உருவமுண்டாக்க. உருவேற்ற, inf. To reiterate incantations for expelling a disease, poison from the bite of a snake, &c., மந்திரத்தை யதிகமாய்ச்செபிக்க. 2. uruku (p. 65) கிறேன், உருகினேன், வேன், உருக, v. n. To dissolve with heat, to melt, liquify, to be fused, கரைய. 2. (fig.) To become tender, to melt as the heart, to be kind, be appeased, to sympathize, commiserate, pity, இரங்க. 3. To glow with love, மனங்கரைய. உருகோட்டன்பொடு. With melting love. (சித்தியார்.) நெருப்பினாலுருக்கப்பட்டவரக்குப்போலஉள்ளமுரு கி. His heart melting like wax before the fire-அரக்குப்பாவைபோலத்தேவர்களுடலுருகின. The gods whose bodies melted, through want of air, like wax statues. மனமுருக, inf. To be kind, to pity, sympathize. உருக்கம், v. noun. Melting (of heart), tenderness, pity, compassion, commiseration, sympathy, இரக்கம். 2. Tender or ardent love to a deity, or a dear friend, அன்பு. 3. Melting, உரு குகை. உருக்கங்காட்ட, s. To show kindness, to relent, &c. மனவுருக்கம், s. Tenderness of mind. 6)

uruvm (p. 65) s. Shape, form, figure, likeness, features, gestures, &c., வடிவம். 2. Beauty, symmetry, அழகு. 3. Image, idol, statue, சொரூபம். 4. Body, human or other, உடல். 5. (p.) Color, good color, நிறம். உருவத்தார்புனையவந்தவொண்டொடி. Adorned with bracelets, the damsel came to invest her lover with a beautiful garland. (நைட.) உருவங்காட்டி, s. A glass, mirror, looking glass. உருவசாத்திரம், s. The knowledge of the shape, feature, lines, &c., of the human body, including palmistry and physiognomy, considered as indicating the moral and mental characteristics of the individual. See கலைஞானம். உருவமாற, inf. To be transformed. உருவமெடுக்க, inf. To assume a form--as a deity, வடிவமெடுக்க. 35)

eṇṇu (p. 73) கிறேன், எண்ணினேன், வேன், எண்ண, v. a. To think, consider, imagine, suppose, நினைக்க. 2. To intend, resolve, determine, குறிக்க. 3. To count, reckon, compute, கணிக்க. 4. To guess, conjecture, estimate, surmise, உத்தேசிக்க. 5. To esteem, appreciate, respect, honor, &c., மதிக்க. 6. To deliberate, take counsel, ஆலோசிக்க. 7. To hope, expect, நம்ப. 8. To care, to be anxious, to be perplexed with thoughts, கவலைபப்பட. 9. To be elated, to be self-conceited, இறுமாக்க. 1. To consider seriously, weigh consequences, யோ சிக்க. எண்ணாதவெல்லாமெண்ணினான். He was musing and perplexed with many thoughts. உனக்குநாசகாலத்தையெண்ணியிருக்கிறார்கள். They are meditating thy destruction. இதையொருகுற்றமாயெண்ணுவார்களா. Will they regard this as a fault? எண்ணப்பட, inf. To be counted, reckoned. 2. To be esteemed, respected. எண்ணத்தொலையாதது--எண்ணப் படாதது, appel. n. That which cannot be counted. எண்ணாதகண்டன்--எண்ணாதநெஞ் சன், s. A very bold man, destitute of fear; a rash, or heedless man. எண்ணாதவன், s. A reckless person, a desperate man. பாவபுண்ணியங்களையெண்ணாதவன். One who has no regard either for virtue or vice. எண்ணாமற்பேச, inf. To speak without due regard to rank, station, &c., மதியாமற்பேச. 2. To speak without thought, யோசியாமற்பேச. எண்ணார், s. Enemies, பகைவர். (p.) எண்ணிப்பார்க்க, inf. To count, number. 2. To consider maturely, deliberate, to weigh in the mind. எண்ணிப்பேச, inf. To speak considerately or deliberately. எண்பட, inf. [prov.] To be discovered, to be caught, to be found out, அகப்பட. எண்ணல், v. noun. Calculation, reckoning, கணக்குச்செய்தல். 2. Astronomical calculation, கணித்தல். 3. Counting with the fingers in astronomical calculations, &c. See கைத்தொழில். எண்ணலர், s. Foes, enemies, பகைவர். (p.) எண்ணலளவை, s. Computation. எண்ணலளவையாகுபெயர், s. One of the four kinds of அளவையாகுபெயர், according to which a number is put for the thing numbered--as காலாலேநடந்தான், he walked on one-fourth (of his length); i. e. his leg, which is so called because it bears that proportion to individual stature. எண்ணிக்கை, v. noun. Regard, esteem, honor, estimation, reverence, மதிப்பு. 2. Number, numbering, கணிப்பு. --Note. This word is irregular in its formation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குப்பிறந்தபிள்ளைகள். Children who seem born only to make up a number, being of no estimation. எண்ணிக்கைக்குள்ளடங்காதது. That which is innumerable. சேவகரையெண்ணிக்கைசெய்கிறது. To muster soldiers. எண்ணிக்கைகொடுக்க, inf. To deliver an account of things, to give in the number. 41)

eẕu (p. 75) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், எழ, v. n. To rise, ascend, get up, rise by one's own power, to rise as a thing by its own levity, rise as a heavenly body, a bird, a kite, &c., to soar, &c., எழும்ப. 2. To stir, be excited, roused, &c., மனங்கிளர. 3. To become resuscitated, rise to life, உயிரடைந்தெழும்ப. 4. To rise to eminence, தலைமைப்பட. 5. To rise and spread as a rumor, பரம்ப. 6. To rise as wind, clouds, &c., கிளம்ப. 7. To rise as a sound, singing, talking, clamor, &c., ஆரவாரமெழ. 8. To rise as a tree, grow larger, swell, to expand as breasts, increase in stature, rise as a building, shoot, sprout, spring up, உயர. 9. To happen, occur, arise, come on, சம்பவிக்க. 1. To become instrumental to, ஏதுவாக. 11. To remove from a dwelling, lodging, village, &c., குடியெழும்ப. 12. To rise in price, விலையேற. அவனுக்குக்கையெழவில்லை. His hand does not open to give any thing. அதைச்செய்யவெனக்குக்கைகாலெழவில்லை. My hands and feet would not stir (rise) to do such a thing. அதைச்சொல்லநாவெழாது. My tongue will not stir (rise) to speak so. கூரேயிறெழாதகுழவி. A babe that has not yet teethed. எழுஞாயிறு, s. The rising sun, உதயாதித்தன். 2. Quinsy, a mortal disease which begins with the rising sun; when it begins in the night it is termed படுஞாயிறு. (Mat. Ind. Opp.) எழுந்தபடி--எழுந்தமானம், s. At random, in an unpremeditated manner, carelessly, மனதிலேதோன்றியபடி. எழுந்தருள, inf. To rise, become present or manifest as the divinity in an idol on consecration; to be present as a great personage, &c., தோன்ற. 2. To repair to a place--as a sage, holy person, a king, &c., பெரியோர்வர. எழுந்தருளுநாயகர்--எழுந்தருளும் விக்கிரகம், s. The secondary idol in a temple, உச்சவவிக்கிரகம், representing the same deity as the first, carried about in processions while the other remains stationary--opp. to the மூலவிக்கிரகம். எழுந்தருள்படி, s. A procession of heathen gods. எழுந்திருக்க, inf. To rise, ascend, get up, &c., எழ, spoken chiefly of men. --Note. This is more full and expressive than எழ, alone. எழுந்துபோக, inf. To depart, to go to meet a person. எழுந்தேற்றம், s. A Roman catholic procession, உற்சவம். 2. Pride, selfconsequence, arrogance, பெருமை. 3. Rashness, presumptuousness, துணிவு. எழுமுகனை, s. The very beginning of a process, or period, தொடக்கம். எழுவான், s. The east, the place of sun-rising, oriens, கிழக்கு, eastern--opp. to படுவான். எழுவான்றொடங்கிப்படுவான்மட்டும். From east to west. என்வீட்டக்கெழுவானிலே. East of my house. எழல்--எழுகை, v. noun. Rising, ascent, எழுச்சி. எழுச்சி, v. noun. Rising, ascent, elevation, எழும்புகை. 2. Stir, excitement, activity, readiness, promptitude, முயற்சி. 3. Haughtiness, aspiring, ambition, resolution, இறுமாப்பு. 4. A disease, or soreness of the ears, காதிலெழும்புமோர்புண். 5. Inflammation of the eyes, கண்ணோயி லொன்று. எழுச்சிக்கொடி, s. Inflammation of the eyes causing red streaks, கண்ணிற் படருமோர்நோய். எழச்சிபாடுவோன், s. One who sings to rouse a prince, or a great man of a morning. துயிலெழுப்புதல்பாடுவோன். எழுச்சிமுரசம், s. A drum beaten to rouse a king, commandant, garrison, &c. of a morning, துயிலெழுப்புமுரசம். எழுச்சியிலை, s. A leaf to cure ophthalmia, கண்ணோய்மருந்திலை. படையெழுச்சி, s. A military expedition, marching to battle. பள்ளியெழுச்சி, s. A kind of poem sung to rouse princess, &c. from sleep. மேலெழுச்சி--மேலெழுந்தவாரி, [prov.] Superficiality. மேலெழுச்சியாய்ப்பேச, inf. To speak carelessly. மனவெழுச்சி, v. noun. Energy, persevering application. எழுமை, v. noun. Height, elevation, உயர்ச்சி. 11)

oḷvu (p. 84) கிறேன், ஔவினேன், வேன், ஔவ, v. a. To grasp or seize, or take hold with the mouth, to bite off, கடித்துப்பி டிக்க. 2. To graze, rub off the skin. burn or scald so as to excoriate, அழுந்தியெடுக்க. --Note. The meaning is similar to கௌவ, but less intense. ஓவியம், s. A picture, a portrait, சித் திரம். 2. A statue, a puppet, பிரதிமை. (p.) ஓவியத்துறைகைபோயவொருவன். One practised in painting-- (நைட.) ஓவியமானபிள்ளை, s. A very dear and beloved child. ஓவியர், s. Painters, sculptors, artists, சித்திரகாரர். 2. Mechanics, artificers, smiths, கம்மாளர். (p.) 145)

kṭukkeṉl (p. 87) v. noun. [prov.] Being grown up, increased in stature, வள ருதல். 2. Being tall, உயருதல். 3. Being increased in wealth or learning (sarcastically), மிகுதல். அவன்கடுக்கென்னநாட்செல்லும். It will be sometime before he is grown up. அதற்குள்அவன்கடுக்கென்றுவிடுவான். By that time he will be grown up. கடுக்கென்றபயிர், s. Corn grown up. கடுக்கென்றவன், s. A grown person, a young fellow. 2. A tall man. 81)

kṭṭḷai (p. 88) s. An order, a command, law, precept, direction, appointment, institute, denunciation, injunction, warrant, charge, கற்பனை. 2. A mould for making bricks, செங்கலச்சு. 3. A rule or measure temporarily constructed for cutting ola leaves, &c., so as to make them of the right width, அளவோலை. (c.) 4. (p.) Balance, scales, நிறையறிகருவி. 5. Libra of the zodiac, துலாவிராசி. 6. Weight, நிறை. 7. A touch-stone, உரைகல். (பெரிய.) 8. Similitude, likeness, simile, உவமை. 9. Regularity, order, rule, ஒழுங்கு. 1. Restraint, restriction, தடை. 11. The matrix in general in which any thing is cast, or receives its form, a model, a symbol, a cast, a form, உருவங்கள்வார்க்குங்கருவி. தெரிவைமாருக்கோர்கட்டளையெனச்செய்ததிருவே. Oh! Lukshmi, who art created as the model of women. கட்டளைகேட்க, inf. To obey an order, to execute a commission, to listen or to attend to the issuing of orders. கட்டளைகொடுக்க, inf. To give permission, to grant privileges, warrant. கட்டளைக்கல், s. A touchstone, உரைகல். 2. Weight, நிறைகல். கட்டளைக்குரு--கட்டளைச்சுவாமி, s. The principal priest for the time being--so used by the Romanists. கட்டளைசொல்ல, inf. To give or publish an order, to publish a notice. கட்டளைச்சட்டம், s. Regulations, enactments, edicts, statutes. கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. One of a religious order who acts as an overseer or burser in a temple, or charitable institution, receiving the rents and dues, making disbursements and seeing that the services are properly conducted. வாரக்கட்டளைத்தம்பிரான், s. An overseer of a religious order who is gratuitously fed by the community, receiving food from the same family every seventh day. கட்டளைபண்ண, inf. To command, direct, order. கட்டளைபிடித்துவார, inf. [prov.] To cut ola by a rule. கட்டளைப்படிவர, inf. To come regularly. 2. To come according to order. கட்டளைமீற, inf. To break or violate an order. கட்டளையிட, inf. To order, command, direct, decree, prescribe, charge. 2. To grant, bestow. 3. To pass a law or edict, to utter a decision. நமக்கீசனிட்டகட்டளையிதுதான். This is just what God has allowed us. வாரக்கட்டளைமடம், s. An hotel where boiled rice is distributed weekly. 27)

kl (p. 96) s. A stone, gravel, pebble, grit, சிலை. 2. Precious stones, அரதனம். 3. A rock, a crag, பெருங்கல். 4. A brick--also called செங்கல். 5. (p.) A mountain, மலை. கல்நாட்ட, inf. To set up stones to show the limits of provinces, sometimes as a menace to an invading foe. 2. To set up a stone, or build a monument of some deceased person. கல்நாதம்--கல்வீரியம்--கல்வேகம், s. Green vitriol, அன்னபேதி. கல்நார்--கல்லின்காரம்--கற்சத்து-கற்சவளை s. A kind of fossil, an incombustible substance, asbestos--used for decayed gums, &c., ஓர்மருந்து. கல்நெஞ்சு, s. A stony heart, a hard heart, வன்்னெஞ்சு. அவன்நெஞ்சுகல்லாய்ப்போயிற்று. His heart is petrified. கல்நெஞ்சன்--கல்நெஞ்சுள்ளவன், s. A hard hearted, unfeeling, or unrelenting person. கல்மடி, s. [vul.] A hard udder of a cow, காய்மடி. கல்மதம்--கன்மதம், s. Rock alum-one of the one hundred and twenty kinds of minerals. கல்மலை--கன்மலை, s. A rock, கல் வெற்பு, Alum plumosum. கல்மழை--கல்மாரி--கன்மழை, s. Hail, a shower of hailstones. கல்முதிரை, s. The tree yielding satin wood, Chloroxylon swietenia. கல்மொந்தன், s. A species of plantain, ஓர்வாழை. கல்லகம், s. A rocky mountain, மலை. கல்லக்காரம், s. Candied molasses, candy, பனங்கற்கண்டு. கல்லக்காரம்விளைய, inf. To become candied-as the molasses of sweet toddy. கல்லங்காய், s. A fruit which becomes as hard as a stone, கற்காய். கல்லடிக்க, inf. To hew or cut stone. 2. To strike the foot against a stone. கல்லடிமூலம், s. A kind of arsenic, ஓர்பாஷாணம். கல்லடைப்பு, s. Retention of urine by gravel, நீரடைக்குமோர்நோய், Calculus. கல்லளை--கல்வளை, s. A cleft or chasm in a rock or mountain. மலைமுழைஞ்சு. கல்லறுக்க, inf. To make bricks, commonly, கல்லரிய. கல்லறை, s. A vault, a cave hewn out in a rock, sepulchre, a tomb, பிரேதக் குழி. 2. A cavern, குகை. 3. A room with a mortar or stone roof and floor, கல்வீடு. கல்லாங்காசு, s. A small round tile with which children play. கல்லாசாரி, s. A master-mason, an architect, கற்றச்சரின்தலைவன். கல்லிலேநாருரிக்க, inf. To strip fibres from a stone; i. e. to seek for what is unattainable or impossible--an absurdity. 2. To obtain by very great labor. கல்லிழைக்க, inf. To set precious stones, கற்பதிக்க. கல்லீயம், s. A hard kind of lead, pewter, வன்மையானஈயம். கல்லுக்காரர், s. Lapidaries, இரத் தினம்விற்போர். கல்லுக்குத்த, inf. [prov.] To frustrate a business by accusations or underhand representation, காரியத்தைத்தடைசெய்ய. கல்லுதிரி, s. A species of small pox with hard pustules, ஓரம்மை. (See உதிரி.) 2. [prov.] A kind of rice, ஓர்நெல். கல்லுத்தீர, inf. To cut and polish gems. கல்வெட்ட. கல்லுத்தூக்க, inf. To take up the anchor of a dhoney, to weigh anchor, நங் கூரந்தூக்க.--Note. Small boats and catamarans have frequently a stone for an anchor, and hence the preceding form. கல்லுப்பார், s. A rocky stratum, reefs, கற்பார். கல்லுப்பாவ--கற்பாவ, inf. To pave, to floor with stone, flag. கல்லுப்பாவினதரை, s. A pavement, stone floor. கல்லுப்பு, s. A kind of mineral salt, salt in lumps, ஓருப்பு. கல்லுப்பொளிய--கற்பொளிய, inf. [com.] To hew and pick grind stones, கல்லுக்கொத்த. கல்லுப்பொறுக்கி--கற்பொறுக்கி, s. A bird that eats little stones, தூதுணு ம்புறா. கல்லுப்போட, inf. To cast a stoneanchor, நங்கூரம்போட. 2. (fig.) A stanza, foretelling or commemorating some important event; such stanzas appear sometimes to have been engraven in stone (whence the name), a recorded prediction, அழியாதசொல். 3. [prov.] A stanza commemorative of the death of an ancestor, mentioning the day and hour of the moon when it happened, kept by the descendants to assist in determining the precise time for the annual funeral rites, புகழ்ச்சிசெய்யுள். 4. [prov.] The mane of a well-known stanza, believed to have been written during the period of a Tamil Dynasty in Ceylon, foretelling, as it is interpreted, a succession of different foreign powers, and the final restoration of native rule, in those regions. It is as follows: முன்னைக்குளக்கோட்டன்மூட்டுந்திருப்பணியைப்பின்னைப்பரங்கிபிரிப்பனே--மன்னா கேள்--பூனைக் கண்செங்கண்புகைக்கண்ணனாண்டபின்பு--மரனே வடுகாய்வரும். 'The sacred edifices which the king Koolakottan reared, the Portuguese will demolish, listen O king-after the reign of the cat-eyed, the redeyed and the smoke-eyed, O thou deereyed, the Vaduca will succeed.' There is a different version of the last line, but it does not affect the general meaning-the smoke-eyed are said to be the present dominant power. கல்வெள்ளி, s.
