The nectarine principle in the head or brain from which the silent, motionless devotee is supposed to obtain nutrition, support and enjoyment, when living without external food. அமுதபுட்பம், s. A creeping plant, சிறுகுறிஞ்சா, Periploca, L. அமுதப்பார்வை, s. A favorable or propitious look. as of a lady towards her admirer, குளிர்ந்தபார்வை. அமதமேந்தல், v. noun. Giving food to ascetics and other virtuous persons, guests, as one of the nine kinds of புண்ணியம், and of the sixteen உபசாரம். அமுதயோகம், s. [in astrology.] The auspicious conjunction of a certain day of the week, phase of the moon and lunar constellation. See யோகம். அமுதர், s. Celestials, வானோர். 2. Herdsmen, இடையர். (p.) அமுதவல்லி, s. A creeper, as சீந்தில். அமுதவெழுத்து, s. Letters deemed propitious and proper to begin a poem, or to be in other important places. Most of the meanings of this word have reference to the mind. சாஸ்திரத்திற்கமைந்துநடக்கிறவன், He is one who obeyed the shasters. ஐம்புலனமைந்தவன், s. One who has suppressed the five senses, or to whom the senses are subject. இது என்விசாரணைக்கமைந்த காரியம். It is a matter at my disposal. என்விருப்பத்திற்கமைந்தபடிநடந்தது. It has occurred to my satisfaction. சுகதுக்கம் ஊழின்படி அமையும். Good and evil are appointed according to former character. செயுநீர்மைசெய்யாதமைகலாவாறு. Owing to dissatisfaction at inability to do charity. (குறள். 22. அதி.) அமையவுண்மின். Eat enough. இரட்சிப்பு இறைவனுக்கமைந்தது. Salvation is of God. அமையாமை, neg. v. noun. Unsubmission, insubordination, disquietness, unfitness, கீழ்ப்படியாமை. அமைவு, v. noun. Subjection, subordination, acquiescence, பொருந்துகை. 2. Composure of mind, tranquillity, contentment, மனவமைதி. 3. Repression of the senses, subjection of the mental powers, அடக்கம். அமைவடக்கம், s. Concealment, security, silence. அமைவன், s. iṟngku (p. 57) கிறேன், இறங்கினேன், வேன், இறங்க, v. n. To descend, pass down a declivity or ladder, sink lower; to get down a tree, a precipice, &c.; to step down, alight from a horse, &c.; to crawl down, சரிய. 2. To descend voluntarily--as a bird, தாழலிறங்க. 3. To descend by degrees through air, water, or any other resisting medium--as leaves or other light substances; to fall or sink gradually or slowly; to fall--as rain; to flow down--as a torrent; to fall--as grain from the ear, மழைமுதலிய வையிறங்க. 4. To disembark, get out of a boat, or from one boat into another of smaller size, கப்பலினின்றிறங்க. 5. To be taken down, unladed, unladen, disburdened, சாமானிறங்க. 6. To fall or sink into the appropriate place--as a post into its hole, to be driven home--as a nail, உள்ளிறங்க. 7. To sink--as a denser body, to settle to the bottom--as earth in water, water in oil, &c., அமிழ. 8. To arrive at a place other than one's home, to pitch, alight, encamp --as an army. to halt, பாளயமிறங்க. 9. To get into the right road, நேர்வழியிலிறங்க. 1. To be brought down or reduced, தாழ்வடைய. 11. To abate--as fever commencing with the head and descending to the extremities, சுரமிறங்க. 12. To become reduced, or to descend--as bile in the system (which rising to the brain is supposed to cause mental derangement); hence to be cured of mental aberration, பித்தமிறங்க. 13. To subside--as animal poison in the system (which is supposed to descend from the head to the extremities), விடமிறங்க. கபாலநீர்கண்ணிலேயிறங்குகிறது. The humors of the head have descended into the eyes, causing cataract, depriving the person of sight, &c. ஒருதுறையிலிறங்கிவிட்டான். He has found a resting place; his mind is settled. இறங்காத்துறை, s. A place not convenient or proper for landing, or lodging. 2. (fig.) An improper marriage, connection, &c. இறங்குதுறை, s. A place of debarkation. 2. (fig.) Means, ways for effecting a thing, வழிவகை. இறங்குபொழுது, s. The time of sunset, சாய்பொழுது. இறங்குபொழுதிலேமருந்துகுடி. Take medicine when the sun declines; implying that the disease will thereby decline. இறங்குமிராசி, s. The six signs through which the sun passes in its southern course, சூரியனிறங்குமாறிராசிகள். இறக்கம், v. noun. Descending-as of food into the stomach; descent of a bird, a stream; debarkation from a boat, going down a ladder, &c., இறங்கு கை. 2. A descent, declivity, slope, declination, சரிவு. 3. A ford, இறங்குதுறை. 4. The drying up of the pustules in the small pox, measles and other similar diseases--so applied because it is supposed to begin at the head and to descend, அம்மைமுதலியவிறக்கம். 5. Paths and tracks of beasts in a jungle, மிருகங்கள் செல்வழி. நோயாளிக்குச்சோற்றிறக்கமில்லை. The patient is unable to swallow his food. இறக்கத்திலிருக்க, inf. To be in a low place, to be below. அவன்காரியம்இறக்கத்திலிருக்கிறது. His business is on the decline. இறங்கல், v. noun. The swelling of the glandula by an excess of wind, &c., அண்டமிறங்கல். 2. uyir (p. 63) s. Life, soul, vitality, animal or vegetable life, சீவன். 2. Wind, காற்று. 3. A vowel, உயிரெழுத்து. 4. A living being, human, brute, or vegetable; an animal, ஓரறி வுயிர்முதலியசீவராசி. உயிருமுடலும்போல. As closely united as the soul and body. உயிர்போய்விட்டது. Life is gone. மன்னுயிர்க்கிரங்குகிறது. To be compassionate to other living creatures. உயிரடங்க, inf. To be in a state of insensibility, be in a swoon, to be suspended as the vital powers. உயிரடைய, inf. To revive, to be reanimated. உயிரளபு--உயிரளபெடை, s. The lengthening of a vowel in verse. See அளபெடை. உயிரறுதியும். Till the very end of life. உயிருதவி, s. Aid in a fatal juncture. 2. Aid by sacrificing life for another. உயிரெடுக்க, inf. To take away life. உயிரெழுத்து, s. A vowel, ஆவி. உயிரொடுங்க, inf. To be reduced as the powers before death, உயிரடங்க. 2. To die, சாவ. உயிரொளிக்க, inf. [prov.] To feign great weakness, sickness, inability, &c., in order to gain or effect an object, உயிர்மறைக்க. உயிரொளித்தகள்ளன், s. To live, maintain life, subsist, உயிர் வாழ. உயிர்போக, inf. To expire, to die. உயிர்ப்பழி, s. The guilt of murder, உயிர்க்கொலை. 2. Vengeance, divine or human, persuing the murderer to death, regarded as the ghost of the murdered person, பிரமகத்தி. உயிர்ப்பிராணி, s. uy (p. 63) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. To live as man, beast, or vegetables; to subsist, survive, revive or flourish--as trees, plants, &c., சீவிக்க. 2. (p.) To obtain benefits, privileges, &c.; to be blessed, to be happy, to prosper, flourish, to be relieved from distress, oppression, suffering, &c., உயிர்வாழ. 3. To obtain heavenly bliss, to gain exemption from transmigration, ஈடேற. 4. To escape from dangers, wild beasts, &c., to flee from, தப்ப. உய்கதியால்--உய்தடி, s. A live hedge-stick. உய்தவம், s. Austerities leading to bliss. உய்பயிர், s. Thriving crops, trees, &c. 2. (fig.) A person in thriving circumstances. உய்வனவு, v. noun. [prov.] Flourishing or reviving as a tree, செழிப்பு. 2. Living, subsistence, maintenance, சீவனம். 3. s. Means of attaining eternal bliss, ஈடேற்றம். This word properly must be உய்வு. உய்விக்க, inf. To save alive, cause to live, prosper, flourish, &c. This is the causative of உய். உய்வு--உய்தி, v. noun. Enjoyment of life, prosperity, felicity, உயிர்வா ழ்வு. 2. Bliss, salvation, ஈடேற்றம். 3. Living, life as spoken auspiciously, உயிர்க்கை. ஒருவன்செய்நன்றிகொன்றார்க்குய்தியில்லெனவ றம்பாடின்றே. The divine laws declare that to the ungrateful there is no happiness here or hereafter. uẕu (p. 67) கிறேன், தேன், வேன், உழ, v. a. To plough, ஏருழ. 2. [with the impersonal terminations.] To root up--as pigs, நிலத்தைக்கிளைக்க. பன்றிநிலத்தையெல்லாமுழுதுபோட்டது. The hogs have ploughed up all the field. உழக்கோல், s. A goad used to drive oxen when ploughing. உழத்தி, s. (plu. உழத்தியர்.) A female of the ploughman caste. See உழவர். உழத்திப்பாட்டு, s. A kind of poem. See பள்ளு. உழுதகாடு, s. A ploughed highland. உழுதநிலம், s. Ploughed land. உழுதுண்போர், s. Those who cultivate fields belonging to others and subsist upon a share of the produce. 2. The fourth or Vellale caste, வேளாளர். உழுதுண்டுவாழ்வாரேவாழ்வார்மற்றெல்லாந்தொ ழுதுண்டுபின்செல்பவர். Those who till the ground enjoy plenty and happiness, the rest being followers and servants of the great depend on their assistance. (குறள்.) தொழுதூண்சுவையிலுழுதூணினிது. To cultivate ground and live by it is more satisfactory than to procure maintenance from others by serving them. உழுதுபுழுதியாக்க, inf. To plough and harrow, to waste. உழுபடை, s. A plough, கலப்பை; [ex படை, implements.] உழுவளைப்பு, s. The turnings in ploughing, தொழுப்பு. உழவு, v. noun. Ploughing, உழு கை. 2. (fig.) (p.) Agriculture, husbandry, tillage, பயிர்செய்யுந்தொழில். உழவின்மிகுத்தஊதியமில்லை. There is no occupation which yields greater profit than agriculture. உழவடைக்க, inf. To make over to another a piece of land for purposes of cultivation. உழவர்--உழவோர், s. Ploughmen, cultivators, agriculturists, husbandmen, inhabitants of agricultural districts, மருதநிலமாக்கள். 2. The fourth or Vellale caste, வேளாளர். 3. (p.) [ex உழப்பு.] Warriors, heroes, படைவீரர். உழவிடை, s. Cessation from ploughing. உழவீரம், s. Condition of the ground when it is sufficiently moist to be ploughed. உழவுகட்ட, inf. [prov.] To take the lead--as the first of several teams in ploughing, to mark the course, &c., முதற்சால்போக. உழவுகட்டி, s. Clods in a ploughed field, உழும்பொழுதுபெயருமண்கட்டி. உழவுகாலம், s. Burnt earth will not adhere to that which is fresh. ஒட்டி யுலர்வாருறவு. That is friendship which adheres to and suffers with one, lit. which dries with one as the flowers in the tank. இதுனக்கொட்டுமோ. He will not permit me to speak. ஒட்டஅறுக்க, inf. To cut off short or level with the ground--as corn; to cut off altogether, to sever--as an ear, a tail, &c. ஒட்டஇணைகக, inf. To nail in close. ஒட்டக்கட்ட, inf. To tie short. 2. To tuck or gather up the clothes well so that no part may hang down. 3. To tie a necklace close to the neck. ஒட்டப்பட்டினிபோட--ஒட்டப் போட, inf. To make a patient fast in order to cure his disease, or to put on short commons a disobedient person for disciplinary purposes. ஒட்டவடிக்க, inf. To drain quite off. ஒட்டவிட, inf. To let one join or have access to one. 2. To set cocks together preparatory for fighting. ஒட்டாக்கொற்றி, s. A cow cruel to its calf. 2. A woman unkind to her child or inattentive, unyielding, &c., to her husband. ஒட்டாமலடிக்க, inf. To neglect one who has sought protection. ஒட்டார்--ஒட்டலர், s. To survive, be left, &c., after a general destruction, sacking clearing, to be out of sight, unnoticed. ஒட்டிப்போக, inf. To go jointly or together. 2. To wax lean, pine. ஒட்டியபுண், s. A contagious eruption. ஒட்டியமேளம், s. A kind of drum. ஒட்டுவியாதி, s. An infectious disease, தொத்துவியாதி. ஒட்டுறவு, s. Near relationship, great friendship. அறுந்தகாதொட்ட, inf. To join an ear that has been torn or cut. பந்தயமொட்ட, inf. To lay a wager. ஒட்டல், v. noun. Sticking, adhering, pasting, &c. 2. s. Shortness. ஒட்டல்வயிறு, s. A shrunk belly. ஒட்டற்காது, s. Short ears or ears with the lobes not hanging. ஒட்டு, v. noun. Adhesion, contact, attachment, conjunction, friendship, cement, சேர்க்கை. 2. Being close to a wall, tree, &c., generally for some bad purpose, lurking to over-hear, to ensnare birds, &c., பதிவிருக்கை. 3. Bidding more--as at a sale, விலையுயர்த்திக்கேட்கை. ஒட்டுக்கண், s. Inflamed eyes with the lids adhering. ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சல், s. A contagious fever, தொத்துக்காய்ச்சல். ஒட்டுக்காய்ச்சலாய்க்காய, inf. To have a contagious fever. ஒட்டுக்குஞ்சு, s. A small young one of birds, சிறுகுஞ்சு. 2. [prov.] A small white louse, பேன்குஞ்சு. ஒட்டுக்குடி, s. A family or person, lodging or dwelling in another's house, garden, &c. ஒட்டுக்கும், adv. Wholly, entirely, முழுதும். ஒட்டுக்கேட்க, inf. [prop. ஒற்றுக் கேட்க.] To over-hear by listening in a hiding place, &c. ஒட்டுக்கொடுக்க, s. inf. To allow access, to be accessible. 2. To comply with, to yield, grant one's request, இடங் கொடுக்க. ஒட்டுடந்தை--ஒட்டுப்பற்று--ஒட் டுரிமை, s. A slight participation in an act, ஒட்டுடன்பாடு. 2. Distant relationship--as regards title to inheritance, சொற்பசம்பந்தம். ஒட்டுப்பற்றில்லாமற்போயிற்று. All friendship has ceased between us. ஒட்டுப்பற்ற, inf. [used adverbially.] Totally extinct, quite out, utterly exhausted. ஒட்டுத்தையல், s. Botching, mending, patching. ஒட்டுநர்--ஒட்டினர், s. A kind of grass, ஓர்புல், Panicum verticillatum, L. ஒட்டுப்போட, inf. To stick on-as a piece, to insert by sticking, வட்டம் போ. 2. To lie in wait, சமயம்பார்க்க. ஒட்டுமயிர், s. Short hair in the margin, not gathered into the tie, குறுகி யமயிர். 2. Hair stuck together, or pasted--as by dancers, ஒட்டப்படுமயிர். ஒட்டுவிசேஷம், s. An ingrafted, patched up story, கட்டுக்கதை. 2. A story learned by stealth, ஒளித்துக்கேட்கும்வார்த்தை. ஒட்டுவிட, inf. To become loose, to separate as boards, &c., glued together, பொருத்தநீங்க. ஒட்டுவித்தை, s. The art of sticking persons together to the ground or otherwise by magical drugs, incantations, &c., ஓர்வித்தை. ஒட்டுவேலை, s. Joining, veneering, sticking on, patching, இணைக்கும்வேலை. 2. otungku (p. 82) கிறேன், ஒதுங்கினேன், வேன், ஒதுங்க, v. n. To subside, recede, retreat, retire--as for shelter, drift ashore, to a hedge or wall on one side, &c., to be put into a corner, on one side, to pass one side-ways, with marks of respect, &c., பதுங்க. 2. To walk, pass, go, நடக்க. 3. [used impersonally.] To become furnished, settled, adjusted, to come to an end, தீர. காரியமொதுங்கியிருக்கிறது. The affair is settled. அவருடையபெருமையெல்லாமொதுங்கிப்போயிற்று. All his pride is brought down. செந்தளிரொதுங்கமிளிர்சீறடியொதுங்கி. Place of retreat, shelter, resort, ஒதுங்குமிடம். ஒதுங்கிநடக்க, inf. To pass sideways as an act of reverence, or as one of the inferior castes. 2. To keep out of the way of an evil person, a wild beast, &c. ஒதுங்கிப்போக, inf. To get out of the way of a person. ஒதுங்கிவர, inf. To turn in. ஒதுக்கம், v. noun. Seclusion, sequestration, separation, ஒதுங்கியிருக்கை. 2. Walking, gait, நடை. 3. Crouching, stooping, humbling one's self, பதுங்குகை. 4. Rare phenomena in nature, unseen planets, real, or imaginary, &c., கரந்துறை கோள். காணாத்தலம்--காணாஸ்தலம் s. The privities, genitals, உபத்தம். காணாதேபோக--காணாமற்போக. inf. To be lost. காணாமற்றிருடினவன், appel. n. One who has taken a thing slyly, clandestinely. காணாமை, s. Invisibility. காணார், appel. n. Enemies--those who will not bow, பகைவர். செய்கைகாண, inf. To be newly cultivated, or cultivated anew, as land. உண்மையைக்காண, inf. To discover, perceive, or understand the truth, especially divine truth. ஈரங்காண, inf. To become moist --as a floor, land, &c. ஈரங்கண்டால்முளைக்கும். If it feel the moisture, the seed will sprout. ஈரங்கண்டாற்கால்வைக்கக்கூடாது. If the ground becomes wet, one cannot walk well. காணும், (the future of காண் in the third pers. neuter.) This form, in colloquial use, is equivalent to sir. 2. In poetry, it is often expletive. போங்காணும். Go, sir. தரியாதுகாணுந்தனம். Wealth is unstable. (நல்வழி.) அப்படியல்லகாணும். It is not so. காண், An expletive of the second person, ஓரிடைச்சொல். காண்டக்க, rel. part. Beautiful, graceful, as காணத்தக்க. காணல்--காண்டல் v. noun. Seeing, காணுகை. 2. Appearance, தோற்றம். 3. Reverence, வணங்கல். 4. The act of abtaining, பெறுதல். காண்பிக்க, inf. To cause to be, to convince, காட்ட. 2. To show, exhibit, adduce, display, represent, தெரிவிக்க. 3. To point, direct, சுட்டிக்காட்ட. காண்பித்துக்கொள்ள, inf. To chide, reprimand, blame, reprove. காண்பித்தல், v. noun. Showing, காட்டல்.

kāṟṟu (p. 107) s. Wind, a breeze, the air, atmosphere, வாயு. 2. The wind that passes downward, அபானவாயு. 3. The fifteenth lunar asterism, or nacshatra, சோதிநட்சத் திரம். 4. A ghost, an apparition, a spectre, an evil spirit.--Note. This word is from the third person neut. sing. of a symbolic verb from கால், air. காற்றுள்ளபோதே தூற்று. Winnow while the wind blows; i.e. attend to a thing at a favorable time. காற்றசைகிறது, The wind moves (after a lull). காற்றடங்கிற்று--காற்றமர்ந்தது. The wind has subsided. காற்றடிக்கிறது, The wind blows. 2. The storm beats. காற்றருந்த, inf. To feed on wind--as snakes. 2. [vul.] To be gaping, listless, idle. காற்றாடவைக்க, inf. To air a thing; to expose it to the wind. காற்றாடி, s. A wind-whirl, a child's toy, கறங்கு. 2. A paper kite, காற்றாடிப்பட் டம். 3. (fig.) A changeable person, a waverer, நிலையிலி. காற்றாடிக்கொள்ள, inf. To cool, to refresh one's self. காற்றின்சகாயன், s. Fire, lit. the helper of wind; that which invites wind for winnowing, as a fire. காற்றுக்கழிய--காற்றுப்பறிய, inf. To break wind. காற்றுக்காலம், s. The windy season. காற்றுக்கிளம்பிற்று. The wind has sprung up or risen. காற்றுக்கிளம்பவில்லை. No wind rises. காற்றுக்குமறைவிடம். A shelter from the wind. காற்றுச்சங்கை, s. Possession by a demon. காற்றுத்திரும்பிவிட்டுது--மாறிவிட்டுது. A kind of shrub yielding bitter fruit of an unpleasant smell, said to expel flatulency. It is fried and eaten on some fasts as a mode of selfmortification, ஓர்முட்செடி, Obtuse-leaved hibiscus. இளங்காற்று, s. A gentle breeze. ஊதைக்காற்று--பனிக்காற்று, s. A cold wind, in the dewy season. எதிர்காற்று--எதிர்க்காற்று, s. A contrary wind. கீழ்காற்று, s. East wind. குளிர்காற்று, s. A cold wind. சிறுகாற்று, s. A gentle wind. சுழல்காற்று--சூறைக்காற்று, s. A whirlwind. சுழிக்காற்று, s. A whirl-wind, limited to a small space, and tearing up trees, &c., that stand in its way. தீக்காற்று, s. A scorching, blasting wind. தென்காற்று, s. South wind. நச்சுக்காற்று, s. A noxious air, miasma --as in time of epidemics. நல்லகாற்று, s. A favorable wind. பெருங்காற்று, s. A strong or violent wind. மேல்காற்று, s. West wind. வடகாற்று, s.
