அகோரை
akōrai (p. 3) s. An astrological division of the day into sections of one hour, or two and a half nalikies each, in which the seven planets reign successively, succeeding each other once in every cycle of seven hours. The order of succession is as follows, Sun, Venus, Mercury, Moon, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars. From this it follows as a matter of course, that the planet which gives name to the day commences its reign at sun-rise, ஓரையினுட்பிரிவு. 31)

alangkāram (p. 27) s. Ornament, decoration, embellishment, சிறப்பு. 2. Beauty, அழகு. 3. Rhetorical ornament, figures of language, rhetoric, அணியிலக்கணம். 4. One of the sixty-four கலைஞானம், கலைஞானமறுபத் துநான்கினொன்று. Wils. p. 73. ALANKARA. There are thirty-five figures of language; viz.: 1. தன்மை, a word or phrase expressing the nature of a thing. 2. உவமை, a parable. 3. உருவகம், metaphor. 4. தீவகம், a word once used and understood in the other parts of the sentence. 5. பின் வருநிலை, the repetition of the word beginning a sentence with the same or a different signification. 6. முன்னர்விலக்கு, rejecting a truth asserted, by showing its absurdity. 7. வேற்றுமைப்பொருள்வைப்பு, establishing the truth of a particular fact by a general truth. 8. வேற்றுமை, contrast. 9. விபாவனை separating effects from their proper causes and attributing them to other causes alluded to. 1. ஒட்டு, an allegory. 11. அதிசயம், hyperbole or exaggerated description. 12. தற்குறிப்பேற்றம், a principal kind of metaphor. 13. ஏது, a figure showing the cause, &c. 14. நுட்பம், a figure which presents a suitable idea, by a corresponding hint, &c. 15. இலேசம், a figure in which a trifling excuse is given, as a cloak for a thing of greater magnitude. 16. நிரனிறை, one of the eight kinds of construction of a sentence, i. e. the separate successive arrangements of a series of nouns and their verbs in natural or reverse order. 17. ஆர்வமொழி, an affectionate word or phrase. 18. சுவை, the passions or emotions of the mind expressed by gesture, exhibited in action and transferred to poetry. 19. தன்மேம்பாட் டுரை, self-adulation. 2. பரியாயம், a figure in rhetoric by which one thing is told and another connected with it is intended. 21. சமாயுதம், the accomplishing of one's object by indirect means. 22. உதாத்தம், a figure which expresses copiousness, richness, enterprise, &c. 23. அவநுதி, denying the character, quality or essence of a person or thing in order to attribute the same to others. 24. சிலேடை, a word of double interpretation. 25. விசேடம், distinguishing a cause by ascribing to it effects which it is inadequate to produce. 26. ஒப்புமைக்கூட்டம். enumeration of analogous words, &c. 27. விரோதம், opposition. 28. மாறுபடுபுகழ்நிலை, praising a person or thing to the disparagement of another. 29. புகழாப்புகழ்ச்சி, praise, flattery, &c., couched in terms of dispraise. 3. நிதரிசனம், feigning a thing in nature as doing good or evil to another, a species of personification as a mode of moral instruction. 31. புணர்நிலை, a figure in which the same epithets or attributes are adapted to two or more different subjects. 32. பரிவ ருத்தனை, a figure in rhetoric, describing an exchange of beauties, excellencies. 33. வாழ்த்து, congratulation. 34. சங்கீரணம், the blending of several figures. 35. பாவிகம், moral instruction, inference, applications, &c., from events related in epic poems. அலங்காரநைவேத்தியம், s. An offering made in front of a temple, for show. அலங்காரபஞ்சகம், s. A poem of a hundred verses, (lit.) the five forms of beauty. It is a series of five kinds of verses; viz.: வெண்பா, கலித்துறை, அக வல், ஆசிரியவிருத்தம், சந்தவிருத்தம். (இவ்வகை யே மாறிமாறி நூறுசெய்யுள் அந்தாதித்துப்பாடுவது.) அலங்காரப்படுத்த, inf. குலம்
kulam (p. 127) s. [in poet. குலன்.] Tribe, family, lineage, race; caste, nation, people, சாதி. 2. Herd, flock, shoal, assemblage, collection, கூட்டம். 3. Kind, class, species, sort, genus, இனம். 4. House, abode, மனை. 5. Royal palace, அரமனை. Wils. p. 233. KULA. 6. Family, rank, respectability or eminence of descent, உயர்குலம். 7. (Rott.) An inhabited country, குடி. 8. (பிங்.) The twentyseventh lunar asterism, or nacshatra; also, the time the moon accupies in traversing the nacshatra, இரேவதி. குரங்கானாலுங்குலத்திலெடு. Though an ape, let a wife be from one's own family. குலங்குப்பையிலே பணம்பந்தியிலே. Rank or caste is on the dung-hill, while wealth sits in state; i. e. the wealthy are honored. கோடாலிக்காம்பு குலத்துக்கீனம். The axehandle brings ruin to its race (by assisting to cut down trees)--spoken of a person who brings disgrace and ruin to his family. குலகன்மம், s. Customs attaching to a family, through successive generations, குலாசாரம். Wils. p. 233. KULAKARMMA. குலகாயம், s. The rules or regulations of caste, குலவொழுக்கம். இதுனக்குக்குலகாயமாயிருக்கிறது. This is the custom of your family or tribe. குலகூடஸ்தன், s. The first ancestor of a race or lineage. குலக்கொடி--குலஸ்திரீ--குலபத்தினி --குலாங்கனை, s. The lawful wife. 2. A woman reputed for chastity. 3. A woman of good family and caste, and of repute for chastity. குலக்கொழுந்து, s. A rare son, the sprout or hope of the family. குலவிளக்கு, s. A light to the family or caste-spoken of a chaste matron. குலங்கெட்டவன், s. One who has lost his caste; an object, low-caste fellow. குலசிரேட்டன்--குலஸ்தன்--குலத்தன்-குலமான், s. One born of a good family. குலட்சயம், s. The ruin or decay of a family or tribe. wills. p. 233. KULAKSHAYA. குலதருமம், s. The customs, duties, offices, &c., peculiar to, or proper for, a caste, &c. Wils. 233. KULAD'HARMMA. குலதிலகம்--குலதிலதம், s. One who is an honor to his family; the respectable head of a family. 2. Very pure lineage; eminence of caste. Wils. p. 233. KULATILAKA. குலதம்பிரான்--குலகுரு, s. A family guru, the guru of a race or tribe. குலதெய்வம், s. The family, tutelary deity. 2. The deity of the tribe. குலத்துக்குத்தக்ககுணம், s. Disposition, habits, or propensities peculiar to a caste. குலத்துக்குத்தக்கநடை, s. Behaviour suitable to one's caste. குலந்தெரிக்க, inf. To dwell on another's parentage--commonly in ridicule. குலபதி, s. The head of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 233. KULAPATI. குலப்பகை, s. Natural antagonism between different species--as between cats and dogs. 2. In-bred malice, hatred, &c., between tribes, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழி, s. Offence or malice, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழுது--குலவடு, s. Stigma on a family. 2. Meanness of caste. குலப்பரத்தை, s. A courtezan by birth, or ancestry. 2. A courtezan, not common but kept by one man; a kept mistress. குலமகள்--குலப்பெண், s. THe lawful wife. 2. A woman of good caste, reputed for chastity. குலமக்கட்கழகுதன்கொழுநனைப்பேணுதல். It is becoming in a lawful and virtuous wife to cherish and honor her husband. குலமகன், s. A man of respectable caste. 2. A legitimate son. குலமங்குதல், v. noun. Being reduced in respectability, circumstances, &c. குலமணி, s. A genuine gem; (fig.) one of an illustrious birth. குலமிலான்--குலவீனன், s. A man of low caste. குலமுறைகிளத்த--குலஞ்செப்ப, inf. To give the genealogy of a family. குலங்கூற--குலம்பேச, inf. To twit one of low parentage. 2. To boast or talk of one's own or another's high birth. குலம்புகுந்தவன், s. One who has mingled with persons of a strange caste, a term of reproach. குலம்பெயர, inf. [prov.] To be changed for the better or worse--as a tree by transplanting; to improve or degenerate. குலவித்தை, s. The arts, duties, or employments peculiar to a family or caste. குலவிருது, s. The standard or banner peculiar to a family. 2. A peculiarity or propensity in an individual, common to his family. குலாசாரம், s. The custom, usage, duties, rites, &c., of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARA. குலாசாரங்காட்டுகிறான். He betrays his family or caste propensities. குலாசாரியன், s. The family priest-as குலகுரு. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARYYA. குலாதிக்கன், s. One of high caste or family, குலசிரேட்டன். குலாபிமானம், s. Family pride, pride of birth. 2. Respectability of caste, family, &c., சாதிமானம். Wils. p. 234. KULAB'HIMANA. குலிஞன்--குலிஞ்சன், s. A person of a high family, of honorable descent, &c., குலமுள்ளோன். குலீனன், s. One of a high family, &c. Wils. p. 234. KULEENA. குலோத்துங்கன், s. The respectable chief of a family. 2. The name of an illustrious prince of the Chola dynasty. குலடன், s. An adopted son, a foster child, சுவீகாரபுத்திரன். Wils. p. 233. KULAT'A. குலகிரி--குலபர்வதம்--குலாசலம், s. The eight mountains in Jambu Dwipa, (See கிரி.) 2. Seven mountain which are supposed to be in each of the seven Dwipas. 3. The circular mountains which are fancied to surround the annular seas respectively, together with the one which sorrounds the Pushkara Dwipa. (காந்.) நற்குலம், s. A good caste or tribe. 2. An excellent kind. இதுநற்குலதீவிதிராட்சச்செடி. This is a very choice vine. இவன்நற்குலத்தான்--நற்குலத்தோன். He is a man of a high caste, or family. 20)

cangkalitam (p. 155) s. Blending, intermixture, கலப்பு. 2. [in arith.] Addition, aggregation; also summation, எண்கூட்டுகை. W. p. 88. SANKALITA. (சது.) 3. One of the treatises on jurisprudence and ethics, தருமநூலி லொன்று. 4. [in arith.] Progression; series of numbers, or quantities increasing or decreasing according to some mathematical law, also their sum, எண்களின்தொடர். The principal series are--1st. நற்சங்கலிதம். The series of numbers in their natural order--as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, &c., an arithmetical series, 2d. வர்க்கசங்கலிதம். The series of the squares of the successive numbers in நற்சங்கலிதம்--as 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, &c., 3d. கனசங்கலிதம். The series of the cubes of the successive numbers in நற்சங்கலிதம்--as 1, 8, 27, 64, 125, &c., 4th. வி யன்சங்கலிதம். The series of odd numbers-as 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, &c. 5th. சமன்சங்கலிதம். The series of even numbers--as 2, 4, 6, 8, 1, &c. 6th. வியன்சமன்சங்கலிதம். The series of odd numbers in an even number of terms --as 1 2 3 4/1,3,5,7 &c. 7th. வியன் வியன் சங்கலிதம். The series of odd number of terms--as 1,2,3,4,5/1,3,5,7,9 &c. 8th. சமன்வியன்சங்கலிதம். The series of even number in an odd number of terms--as 1,2,3,4,5/2,4,6,8,1, 9th. சமன் சமன்சங்கலி தம். The series of even number in an even number of terms--as 1,2,3,4/2,4,6,8,1, &c. 1th. அதி சங்கலிதம். The geometrical series whose first term is 1 and whose ratio is 2.--as 1,2,4,8,16,32, &c. 11th. சங்கலிதசங்கலிதம். The series whose respective terms are the summation of the corresponding number of terms in the natural series--as 1 2 3 4/1,3,6,1, 5 6/15, 21, &c. 12th. இலாடசங்கலிதம். 13th. வர்க்க லாடசங்கலிதம். [in Chris. usage.] Original depravity--in opposition to கன்மபா வம். See பாவம். சன்மச்சனி, s. See under சனி. சன்மபூமி, s. One's native land. சன்மப்பகை, s. Hereditary feud, also hatred between very near relatives-as அண்ணன்தம்பிதானே சன்மப்பகையாளர். சன்மவாரம், s. Birth-day. (R.) சன்மாந்தரம், s. Transmigrations in endless variety; [ex அந்தரம்.] (c.) சன்மாந்தரபுண்ணியம், s. Aggregated merit of the good deeds of successive births. 72) *
சமயம்
camayam (p. 162) s. A convenient, suitable or proper time; leisure, convenience, opportunity, தருணம். 2. Time, season, occasion, juncture of time; emergency, extremity, காலம். 3. Any religious persuasion, faith or system, மார்க்கம். (c.) W. p. 894. SAMAYA. --Note.. There are twelve principal religious systems, of which six are approved and six rejected by the Saiva sect. 1. உட் சமையம், or the six systems considered orthodox by the Saivas are. 1. வைரவம், making Bhairava supreme. 2. வாமம், regarding the female principle in nature, as the primeval form of deity, and teaching the worship of the generative female organ. 3. காளாமுகம், similar to the வாமம். 4. மாவிரதம், teaching that the deity is a pure spirit. 5. பாசுபதம், similar to மாவிரதம். 6. சைவம், Saivism, which teaches that the deity is both spirit and matter; assuming forms for accomplishing his purposes. II. புறச்சமயம், or the six heterodox systems; viz.:-- 1. உலகாயதம். A species of Atheism regarding sensual gratifications as the chief good, as taught by the atheistical school of Charvaka. 2. புத் தம். Bhuddism, which rejects the notion of a Supreme being, maintains that all material existences proceed from a fortuitous combination of the four primitive elements, (earth, water, fire, and air,) and that mental phenomena are the mere results of organization. It regards Bhudd as a deified teacher and object of worship. 3. சமணம். The Jaina system which is a modification of Bhuddism, and regards Argha as the deified preceptor and object of worship. 4. மீமாஞ்சை. A system that regards Brahm as the soul of the universe. 5. பாஞ்சாரத்திரம். A system taught by Vishnu, during five successive nights. 6. பாட்டாசாரியம். The system of Battacharya whose followers regard the Vedas as god, and consider that virtuous actions of themselves result in felicity. III. Other systems derived from these twelve or in some respects similar to them are very numerous, some of them are கபாலம், சவுத்திராந்திகம், யோகசாரணம், ஆத்துமிகம், வைபாடிகம், நிகண்டவா தம், நையாயிகம், வைசேஷிகம், பதஞ்சலியம், சாங்கியம், சித்தாந்தம், வேதாந்தம், &c. The six orthodox systems among the Vaishnuvas are 1. யாதவம், that of Yádava Misra. 2. மாயாவாதம், that by Sankarachárya. 3. இரணியகர்ப்பம், that by Hiranyagarbha. 4. இராமானுசீயம், that by Rámánuja. 5. பாஸ்கரம், that by Bhaskara. 6. தத்துவவாதம், that by Mádhavácharya. சமயகருமம், s. Rites and duties of religion, மார்க்காசாரம். சமயகாரியம், s. Questions, matters, &c., of theology; religious concerns, subjects, &c. சமயக்கட்டு, s. Religious obligation. See கட்டு. சமயக்கொள்கை--சமயக்கோட்பாடு, s. Religious opinions, tenets, &c. சமயசாத்திரம், s. The theology of a sect. 2. Religious writings or shastras. சமயதீட்சை, s. The ceremony of initiating a disciple in the mantras, &c., peculiar to the sect. See தீட்சை. சமயத்தார், s. The followers of a religious system. சமயங்கடக்க, inf. To transcend all religions--as the supreme being. (p.) சமயநிந்தை, s. Scoffing at religion, profaneness, blasphemy, &c. சமயநிலை, s. The commands, tenets of a religion. 2. Religion as observed, believed, practised, &c., by its professors. சமயநூல், s. The religious writings of a sect. சமயப்பற்று, v. noun. Attachment to a religion. சமயபத்தி, s. Religious devotedness to a creed. சமயபேதம், s. Heresy, heterodoxy. 2. Diversity of religions. 3. Schism. 4. (c.) Unseasonableness. சமயபேதி, s. A heretic. 2. Schismatic. 3. One of another religion. சமயப்போலி, s. A spurious system of religion. (p.) சமயப்போக்கு, v. noun. The substance, scope, &c., of a religion. (Little used.) சமயமதம், s. Bigotry, enthusiasm, conceit in religion. சமயமதங்கொண்டாட, inf. To be enthusiastic, to act the bigot. சமயமானம், s. A natural regard to one's own religion. (c.) 2. (Rott.) Constancy or firmness in a religion. சந்நியாசிக்குஞ் சாதிமானஞ் சமயமானம்விடாது.... The ascetic who has relinquished every thing will not relinquish his caste or sect. சமயவாதம், s. Religious controversy. சமயவாதி, s. A disputant for religion. 2. A professor of religion. சமயாசாரம், s. The rites and ceremonies, of a religion according to a prescribed institute. 2. Religious practice, observance of rites. (c.) சமயாதீதன், s. The supreme Being-as transcending all religions, சமயங்கடந்த கடவுள். (p.) சமயி, s. [com. சமயத்தான்.] A religionist, a sectarian, the follower of any religion, sect, &c., a sectary. (p.) சமயமாயிருக்கையில், [adverbially.] At a particular juncture, in an emergency. சமயங்கடத்த, inf. [prov.] To while away time, to loiter. சமயங்கிடைக்க, inf. To obtain an opportunity. (c.) சமயங்கெட்டவேளை, s. An unseasonable time. (Limited usage.) சமயத்துக்குதவ, inf. To help in an emergency. சமயம்பார்க்க--சமயந்தேட, inf. To watch an opportunity. சமயாசமயம், s. Urgent or pressing occasion, unfavorable opportunity. (c.) தற்சமயம், s. The very juncture or moment. 2. A special opportunity. நற்சமயம், s. A good opportunity. சமயந்தப்பிவந்தான். He came unseasonably. சமயத்திலே கையைவிரித்தான். He refrained from helping in time of need. 2) *
சாந்தபனம்
cāntapaṉam (p. 176) s. A kind of light fast, eating curds, &c., for a day, and abstaining from food the next day. A severer kind is to feed on பஞ்சகவ்வியம் or some one article for six successive days with entire fasting the seventh day, ஓர்தபவிரதம். W. p. 918. S'A'NTAPANA.--not used in Tamil. 47) *

cuẕlu (p. 198) கிறேன், சுழன்றேன், வேன், சுழல, v. n. To whirl, spin, eddy, swing round, turn on an axis, சுலவ. To revolve in an orbit, சுற்ற. 3. To be rotary, to turn as the wheel of a carriage, உருள. 4. To revolve, as the soul through successive births, பிறவியிற்சுழல. 5. To be agitated, troubled, distressed in mind, மனஞ்சுழல. 6. To be tossed about, to be driven to and fro, உழல. 7. To droop, faint, languish, சோர. 8. To be engrossed by the objects of sense, பொறிசுழல் (c.) சுழன்றுதிரிய, inf. To be revolving. 2. To be agitated, மனங்கலங்க. சுழன்றுபோக, inf. To become faint or fatigued, சோர்ந்துபோக. பசியினாற்சுழன்றுபோனான். He has become faint with hunger. சுழன்றடிக்க, inf. To rush on all sides as whirlwinds, epidemics, &c. சுழலல்--சுழல்வு--சுழற்சி. v. noun. Whirling, spinning, gyration, rotation, brandishing, flourishing. 2. Trouble, agitation, being tossed about, vicissitude, மனக்கலக்கம். 3. Moving to and fro, அலைதல். சுழற்காற்று--சுழல்கால், s. Whirlwind. சுழல்சக்கரம், s. Revolving wheel. சுழல்நோய், s. [prov.] A disease in cattle, causing them to whirl round and fall down. சுழல்மரம், s. [loc.] A winding screw made of wood. சுழல்படை, s. A club, commonly cast, சக்கரம். 2. (R.) A curved club, வளைதடி. சுழல்வண்டு, s. A species of beetle. சுழல்தண்ணீர், s. Rolling and flowing water. செனனமரணங்களிலேசுழன்றுதிரிய, inf. To revolve through different births and deaths. 52)
தத்து
tttu (p. 223) கிறேன், தத்தினேன், வேன், தத்த, v. n. and v. a. To leap, jump, skip, hop, &c., குதிக்க. 2. To go by leaps or jumps, தத் திப்பாய. 3. To roll, as successive waves, அலைபாய. 4. To move by jerks, and starts, as cockroaches and some other insects, பூச் சிதாண்ட. 5. To jump over, கடக்க. (c.) தத்தடி, s. [prov.] The hesitating walk of a young child. தத்தித்தத்திநடக்க, inf. [prov. தத்தடி யிட்டுநடக்க.] To step hesitatingly, as a child. தத்திப்பாய, inf. To hop, to go by jerks and starts; jump over. நீர்தத்ததிப்பாய்கிறது. The water flows in a rippling manner. தத்துபரி, s. An ambling horse. (p.) தத்துமடை, s. Side courses in a waterchannel. (c.) தத்துவெடியன்--தத்துவெட்டியன், s. [prov.] As தத்துப்பூச்சி. வீடுதத்தி, appel. n. [prov.] One who goes from house to house, stopping but a little time in a place. 44) *

மனு
maṉu (p. 346) s. Menu, the great legislator and saint, regarded as the son of Brahma, or a personification of that god, and the author of மானவம் or Institutes of Menu. He is called Swayambhuva, மனுச்சக்கிரவர்த்தி. 2. A generic term, applied to the fourteen successive Menus who preside over the universe, each for the period of a Manuvantara--In the present Kalpa there have already been six, of whom Swayambhuva was the first. The seventh, or now ruling Menu, is Vaivaswata. 3. Man in general, மனுஷன். 4. Mantra, a mystical verse, or formula, மந்திரம். W. p. 641. MANU. 5. One of the treatises of jurisprudence. An irascible disposition. மூலக்கடுப்பு, v. noun. Pain from piles. See கடுப்பு. மூலக்கரப்பன், s. A spreading eruption. மூலக்காரன், s. One who has the piles. 2. [com. மூலகுணக்காரன்.] A hasty tempered man. மூலக்கிரந்தி, s. A kind of disease from morbid humors in the body. மூலக்கூறு, s. The radical parts of any substance; or its essential nature. மூலக்கிராணி, s. Hemorrhoids or piles with flux. See கிராணி. மூலக்கொதி, s. A kind of disease or pain from the piles, said to cause peevishness, and anger. மூலசம், s. All the vegetable productions which have roots or a bulb; [ex சம்.] மூலச்சூடு, s. As மூலக்கொதி. மூலச்சோதி, s. The original or primeval light, i. e. God, கடவுள். மூலதனம்--மூலத்திரவியம், s. Capital or stock, முதற்பணம். 2. A treasure accumulated by ancestors, பிதிரார்ச்சிதம். மூலத்தம்பம், s. A Sanscrit treatise on Architecture, ஓர்சிற்பநூல். மூலத்தன்மை, s. Principle, பிரகிருதி. மூலத்தானம்--மூலஸ்தானம், s. Maya as the cause of visible creation. மூலப்பொருள், s. The original or first cause, God, கடவுள். (p.) மூலமந்திரம், s. The chief mantra of each sect, as distinguished from the Gayatri common to all, especially to the brahmans. மூலமலம், s. The original principle of good and evil, causing successive births. See ஆணவம். மூலமுளை, s. A hemorrhoidal shoot. மூலவாயு, s. Wind in the intestines. மூலவாயுவையெழுப்புதல், v. noun. Driving upwards the internal wind. மூலவிக்கிரகம், s. The chief or stationary idol in a temple, usually of unwrought black granite--oppos. to எழுந் தருளுநாயகர். மூலவிருள், s. The original darkness of the soul. See மாயை. மூலவேர், s. The first or principal root of a tree, or its stem. மூலாக்கிரம், s. The root and the top. See ஆமூலாக்கிரம். மூலாக்கினி, s. The warmth of the stomach, as உதராக்கினி. 2.
