iṭi (p. 45) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To pound, beat in a mortar, comminute, pulverize, reduce to flour, தூளாக்க. 2. To strike with the fist, a club or any thing blunt, slantingly, not with a direct blow, தாக்க. 3. To push, gore as a beast, to thrust, to butt--as an old calf in sucking, முட்ட. 4. To thunder, eject thunder-bolts, இடியிடிக்க. 5. To beat so as to break, bruise or batter to pieces, demolish, shatter, தகர்க்க. 6. To speak forcibly and emphatically, to use strong language in order to make an impression, to urge, insist upon with earnestness, உறுதிசொல்ல. 7. v. n. To throb, beat-as the head when aching: to beat, pant, palpitate, துடிக்க. 8. To strike--as a vessel against the shore--as a gun fired, &c., உதைக்க. 9. To sound, make a noise, ஒலிக்க. இடிக்குந் துணையாரை யாள்வாரையாரே கெடுக்குந் தகைமையவர்? uṇ (p. 59) --உண்ணு, கிறேன், உண்டே ன், உண்பேன் or உண்ணுவேன், உண்ண, v. a. To eat, drink, suck--as a child; to take food, whether solids, liquids or other kinds, to taste, அருந்த. 2. To feed, make a full meal --as a dinner, &c., புசிக்க. 3. To enjoy, suffer, experience, or receive the fruits of actions performed in former births, or in future the actions of the present, அனுபவிக்க. 4. To imbibe, absorb, விழுங்க.--Note. With verbal roots and sometimes with verbal nouns it forms a passive--as அடியுண்ண, to be beaten; அலையுண்ண, to be distressed. உண்டசுற்றமுருகும். Relations or friends who have eaten together will cherish towards each other kindly feelings. உண்டசோற்றுக்கிரண்டகம்பண்ணப்படாது. One ought not to be ungrateful to his benefactor. உண்டார்மேனிகண்டாற்றெரியும். A person's diet may be known by his appearance. உண்ணக்கைசலிக்க. To be so delicate as to tire by eating--as a dainty child, &c. 2. To be wearied, cloyed, sated, &c. by too profuse a supply of food. உய்யாவினைப்பயனுண்ணுங்காலை. While experiencing the inevitable fruits of former births. உண்கலம், s. A plate or dish to cat from, a porringer, commonly brass, தாலம். உண்டாட்டு, s. Play of females, மகளிர்விளையாட்டு. 2. Play, sport, விளையாட்டு. 3. Festivity, drinking, joviality, மதுவுண் டாடுகை. உண்ணி, s. An appellative termination often contracted to உணி--as தூக்குணி, &c., one who eats, an eater. உண்ணீர், s. Water to drink. உண்பிக்க, inf. To cause to eat, drink, &c., feed one, உண்ணுவிக்க. தூக்குணி, s. One so vile and daring as not to fear hanging. 2. A malefactor who is hanged. 3. One who hangs about to get food. அழுகுணி, s. One who is always weeping; also one who is disposed to weep. அடியுணி--குட்டுணி, s. One who is beaten. குத்துணி, s. One who is stabbed. 2. A dastard, mean spirited person. இரப்புணி, s. A beggar, one who eats what he begs. அடையுணி, s. One dependent for food. கட்டுண்ண, inf. To be tied up. வெட்டுண்ண, inf. To be cut down. தடையுண்ண, inf. To be hindered. மையுண்கண்ணி, s. A woman with painted eyes, (lit.) she whose eyes have absorbed paint. முலையுண்ணுங்குழந்தை, s. An infant at the breast. நீலுண்டுகிலிலை. The pencil which has imbibed blue paint. (நன்னூலுரை.) கள்ளுண்ணி, s. A drunkard. தள்ளுண்ண, inf. To be rejected. வீண்சோறுண்ணி, s. A rice consumer, a worthless person. உண்டல். A past verbal form of உண்ணல், eating. 119)

uṇṭi (p. 59) s. Food, sustenance, eatables, உணவு. 2. Boiled rice, சோறு. 3. The food of carnivorous animals, இரை. (நிகண்டு and திவாகரம்.) 4. (பாரதிதீ.) The food of birds and beasts in general, பற வைவிலங்கிவற்றினுணவு. Four kinds of eating are enumerated, viz.: 1. உண்டல், eating without mastication--as boiled rice, &c. 2. தின்றல், masticating, chewing--as meat, curries, &c. 3. நக்கல், licking--as honey, molasses, lapping. 4. பருகல், drinking, sucking--as a child. Sometimes a fifth is added, viz.: மென்றல், chewing--as spices, pungents, leaves, &c. kept in the mouth. உண்டிசுருங்குதல்பெண்டிர்க்கழகு. It is becoming in a woman to eat little. பேருண்டி, s. A principal meal-as dinner, &c., போசனம். 2. Eating to excess, gluttony, gormandizing, பெருந் தீன். சிற்றுண்டி, s. A light meal--as luncheon, tiffin, பலகாரம். 2. Eating sparingly, சிறுதீன். 3. A kind of small cake, அப்பவருக்கத்தொன்று. 122)

umi (p. 62) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. n. [probably a contraction of உமிழ்.] To spit. 2. v. a. [prov.] To suck, உறிஞ்ச. 3. To rinse the mouth, கொப்பளிக்க. மாம்பழத்தையுமிய. To suck the juice of a mango. கரும்பைச்சப்பியுமிய. To chew and suck sugar-cane. அவனைப்பேயுமிந்துபோட்டது. A devil has sucked out the juices of his body, emaciating him. முலையுமிந்துகுடிக்க. uṟi (p. 67) கிறேன், ந்தேன், வேன், ய, v. a. To snuff up by the nose, &c.--as உறிஞ்ச. 2. To sip up, suck up, to take in by draughts. 76)

uṟiñcu (p. 67) கிறேன், உறிஞ்சினேன், வே ன், உறிஞ்ச, v. a. To sip, suck up, draw into the mouth (as hot liquids or as from spoons, &c.), வாய்க்குள்ளிழுக்க. 2. To snuff up, sniff, inhale forcibly through the nose, ஆக்கிராணிக்க. 3. (fig.) To imbibe, absorb as a spunge, as the earth does rain, &c., உள்ளேயிழுக்க. நன்குறிஞ்சிப்பேய்த்தனஞ்சுவைத்தார். Sucking well he has fed on the breast of a female vampire. (வேங்கட.) இந்த மருந்துபுண்ணிற்கள்ளத்தையுறிஞ்சியெடுத்துப் போடும். This medicament will absorb the noxious humors. மூக்கினாலுறிஞ்ச, inf. To snuff up any thing. மூக்குறிஞ்ச, inf. To snuff for the purpose of retaining the mucus. 77)

ūṭṭu (p. 69) கிறேன், ஊட்டினேன், வே ன், ஊட்ட, v. a. To put into the mouth-as of children, sick people, &c., உண்பிக்க. 2. To deal out food--as a wife to her husband, &c., to impart, cherish, உணவுகொடுக்க. 3. To entertain a guest, &c., விருந்திட. 4. To saturate, infuse, steep, impregnate, tincture, புகைமுதலியவூட்ட. 5. To cause to experience joys and sufferings--as the fruits of action, இன்பதுன்பங்களையருத்த. 6. (fig.) To instil--as knowledge, &c., நினைப்பூட்ட. (p.) 7. v. n. To suck--as the young of beasts, கன்றூட்ட. அவரைவைத்துக்கொண்டூட்டுகிறார்கள். They entertain him with great attention--an expression of envy. இரண்டாட்டிலூட்டினகுட்டியானான். He is like a kid that sucks two she-goats; i. e. he gets nothing by serving two masters. கன்றூட்டுகிறது. The calf sucks. ஊட்டக்கொடுக்க, inf. To let the calf suck (the act of the cow). ஊட்டவிட, inf. To lead the calf to the cow to suck. ஊட்டுந்தாய், s. a foster-mother, செவிலி. See தாய். பிழைப்பூட்ட, inf. To reanimate, restore to life. 2. To furnish means of sustenance. இந்தவைத்தியன்போகுமுயிரைப்பிழைப்பூட்டினான். The doctor has restored him to life. நினைப்பூட்ட, inf. To remind, to put in mind. நினைப்பூட்டி, s. A monument. ஊட்டு, v. noun. Feeding, உண் பிக்கை. 2. s. A morsel, or portion given to a child, a sick person, &c., கவளம். ஊட்டுக்கன்று, s. A sucking calf. ஊட்டுமறந்தகன்று, s. kuṭi (p. 116) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To drink, to take drink, பருக. 2. To inhale, உறிஞ்ச. 3. To tipple, to guzzle, to drink toddy or arrack, to drink to excess, மதுவுண்ண. 4. To suck--as infants or other young creatures, முலையுண்ண. 5. To devour, to quaff, மண்ட. 6. To take or swallow-as liquid medicines, &c., மருந்துகுடிக்க. 7. (fig.) To absorb, to imbibe, உட்கொள்ள. 8. To smoke--as tobacco, &c. உயிர்குடித்தன்றிநில்லா. Not stopping except to drink the lives of those around. குடியாதவீடுவிடியாது. No tippler is content unless he drinks. குடிவெறிஅடிபடத்தீரும். Flogging is a sure remedy for intoxication. நல்லபால்குடித்துவளர்ந்தவன். One who has been virtuously brought up. நிலந்தண்ணீரைக்குடித்துவிட்டது. The earth has drunk up or absorbed the water. பால்குடிக்கிறகுழந்தை. A child at the breast. குடிகாரன்--குடியன் s. A drunkard, a tippler, வெறியன். குடிமதம், s. Excitement of spirits by drinking. குடிவெறி, s. Intoxication by drinking, intemperance. குடிநீர், s. A decoction, a tincture, a medical infusion, a diet-drink. குடி, v. noun.
