aṭai (p. 8) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To shut, close, stop up, சார்த்த. 2. To lock, பூட்ட. 3. To block up a passage, obstruct, தடுக்க, (see குறள். அன்புடைமை. Ellis 215.) 4. To enclose, encompass, shut up, encage, fold cattle, &c., புகுத்த. 5. To secure, keep safely, conceal, காப்புச்செய்ய. சுவாமிதிருவுளத்தடைத்தார். Swamy thought --kept in his mind. அடைகல், s. A stone placed at the entrance of a sluice to prevent the water from flowing, மதகடைக்குங்கல். அடைகுளம், s. [prov.] A tank with no outlet, pent up, stagnant water. அடைசீலை, s. Cloth steeped in a medical preparation and put in the mouth for a sore throat, &c., அடைசுபொட்டணம். அடைத்தகுரல், s. A hoarse, husky voice. அடைபட, inf. To be closed, shut up, அடைக்கப்பட. 2. To be obstructed, as a passage, &c., தடைபட. அடைப்பன், s. Obstruction of the throat, quinsy in cattle, ஓர்வியாதி. அடைப்பு, v. noun. Shutting, closing, stopping. 2. s. Obstruction. 3. Enclosure. 4. aẕu (p. 32) கிறேன், தேன், வேன், அழ, v. n. To weep, cry, இரங்க. 2. To bewail, lament, புலம்ப. 3. To whine, சிணுங்க. 4. To low, bellow, (as a cow for its call), bleat, (as a sheep), mew, (as a cat), caw, (as a crow), cry or hoot, (as an owl), கத்த. In some of these a cry of distress or anxiety is indicated as of the dam for its young. குடல்கூழுக்கழக்கொண்டைபூவுக்கழுகிறதா? Would you by adorning your hair with flowers while your belly is craving food? ஆண்டாண்டுதோறுமழுதுபுரண்டாலும் மாண்டார் வருவரோ மாநிலத்தில்? What though we roll in sorrow from year to year, can the deceased return again to this nether world? அழுகண்ணி, s. A species of plant from which water is continually oozing and dropping, ஓர்பூடு. அழுகள்ளன், s. A hypocritical weeper. அழுகுணி, s. A crying one, அ ழுவோன். அழுகை, v. noun. Weeping, crying. 12)

aviẕ (p. 31) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To loosen, slacken, untie, unbind, unpack, unfasten, unsew, முடியவிழ்க்க. 2. To cause to open, as the sun opens flowers. Humming insects are also described by poets as opening the flowers. மலரச்செய்ய. 3. To solve an enigma, unriddle, explain a difficulty, விடுகதைவிடுவிக்க. அவன்காலால்முடிந்ததைக் கையாலவிழ்க்கக்கூடாது. What he has bound with his foot, none can unbind with their hands; i. e. he is a crafty man whose schemes no body, though ever so skilful, can defeat. 13) *

ākkm (p. 35) s. An abstract from ஆகு தல், or ஆக்குதல், indicating change from one state or quality to another--as in இவன் நல்லவனானான், he has become a good man. 2. Gain, profit, acquisition, இலாபம். 3. Wealth, prosperity, riches, fortune, affluence, செல்வம். 4. Gold, பொன். 5. Lakshmi, இலக்குமி. 6. The front division of an army, கொடிப்படை. 7. Elevation, எழு ச்சி. 8. Enlargement, increase, பெருக்கம். (p.) ஆக்கச்சொல், s. A word or phrase used metonymically, ஆகுபெயர்ச்சொல்; such as, விட்டவாக்கச்சொல், விடாதவாக்கச் சொல், விட்டும்விடாதவாக்கச்சொல். ஆக்கஞ்செப்பல், v. noun. One of the ten அவத்தை--talking much of a loved one. ஆக்கப்பெயர், s. Nouns or names given at pleasure, arbitrary signs differing slightly from the pure, இடுகுறிப்பெயர். It is of two kinds; viz.: 1. இடுகுறியாக்கப் பெயர்; as முட்டை, though already an arbitrary sign to denote an egg has yet the signification of Subramanian, as a name given to him subsequently by பொய்யாமொழிப்புலவர், at his own request. 2. காரணவாக்கப்பெயர்; as மலைமகண்மகன், the son of Parvati--the above Subramanian himself. ஆக்கப்பொருள், s. A meaning given to a word or phrase not originally and directly belonging to it, ஆகுபெயர்ப் பொருள். ஆக்கவினைக்குறிப்பு, s. A verb indicating a natural change of state or quality, ஓர்குறிப்புவினை, as இவன் நல்லவனாயிருக் கிறான். 22) *

ār (p. 41) . Who, the interrogative pronoun common to both numbers and all persons, in the rational class, though properly the third person plural--contracted from யாவர் or யார். (c.) நீயார்? Who art thou? அவரார்? Who is he?--Note. When உம் is added to ஆர், it implies all, and with a negative, none--as யாரும், all, யாருமில்லை, no one--also when it is doubled, it is used distributively--as ஆராருக்குக் கொடுத் தான்? To whom did he give? 51)

āl (p. 43) . The chief form of the third case, or instrumental ablative--implying cause, agency, instrumentality, expressing by, by means of, with, by way of, in consequence of, மூன்றாம்வேற்றுமையுருபு. 2. A poetic expletive, usually annexed to the finite verb, also to nouns, அசைச்சொல். 3. A form of the subjunctive, joined to the gerund, or in poetry, to the finite verb, expressing if, வினையெச்சவிகுதி. 4. An optative termination expressing may, let, &c., வியங்கோள் விகுதி. 5. A negative form of the optative--as அழால், don't weep. 6. A form of affirmation, for yes, ஆமெனல். This definition, though given in Saturagarady and Negundu, is not proved by examples. 7. A form of the third case, expressing each, every, distributively. (p.) நீவந்தால். If you come. நாடாமால். It is a country, or one's native land. ஊராலொருதேவகுலம். A temple in every country. மரீஇ யதோரால். May you know--or know --know you what has happened. வாளால்வெட்டினான். He cut with a sword. அரசனாலாகியமனை. A house built by the king. 6)

āẕm (p. 43) s. Depth, profundity, great depth, abyss, குட்டம். 2. Mature thought, learning, discrimination, comprehensiveness of mind, ஆழ்ந்தகருத்து. That which cannot be easily understood, அறிதற்கரியது. (c.) ஆழஞ்சோதிக்க, inf. To prove, examine, examine one`s depth of knowledge, &c. ஆழமானகருத்து, s. Abstruse idea, profundity of meaning, deep or profound wisdom, sense. ஆழமுடைத்தாதல், Comprehensiveness of language--being one of the ten beauties of composition, நூலழகுபத்தி னொன்று. ஆழம்பார்க்க, inf. To sound the depth of any place. 2. To sound or sift one. ஆழியன், s. An impostor, deceiver, one who conceals his opinion. 46)

ingkitam (p. 45) s. A hint, sign, indication of feeling or sentiment by gesture, குறி ப்பு. 2. Purpose, intention, நினைவு. Wils. p. 129. INGITA. 3. Sweetness, agreeableness, இனிமை. (p.) அந்த இங்கிதத்தினாலே மனோவிகாரமாய். Being disturbed in mind by (her) gestures. தங்களைக்காத்திங்கிதம் பேசுகிறவர்கள். Those who wait about them, (for opportunity) and then make known their wishes. இங்கிதகவி, s. A poem in which the poet expresses the object or wish of his patron, having ascertained it by signs, gestures, &c., பாட்டுடைத்தலைவன்கருத் தைவிளக்குங்கவி. 2. A poet who expresses his thoughts sweetly, இனிப்பைத்தருங் கவி பாடுவோன். 3. A sweet poem, இன்பந்த ருங்கவி. இங்கிதக்காரன், s. One who accommodates himself to another's views, a flatterer, இன்சொற்சொல்வோன். இங்கிதமானபேச்சு, s. Language accommodated to circumstances, flattery. 24)

intiriyam (p. 46) s. [contracted into இந்தியம்.] An organ of sense, or organ of the body, பொறி; [ex இந்திர, the soul or self, or what is with difficulty restrained by the soul.] There are three kinds of இந்திரியம், or sensual organs; viz.: those of perception, those of action and the intellectual organs. Wils. p. 133. INDRYA. I. ஞானேந்திரியம், the organs of sense or perception are five; viz.: 1. சக்கு, சட்சு or கண், the eye, the organ of sight having உருவம் or visible forms as its object. 2. சோத்திரம் or செவி, the ear, the organ of hearing, having சத்தம், (sound) as its object. 3. ஆக்கிராணம் or மூக்கு, the nose, the organ of smelling, having கந்தம், (odors) as its object. 4. சிங்குவை or நா, the tongue, the organ of tasting, having இரசம், (flavors) as its object. 5. தொக்கு or துவக்கு or உடம்பு, the surface of the body, the organ of feeling, having பரிசம், (touch or contact) as its object. II. கன்மேந்திரியம், or organs of actions are five; viz.: 1. வாக்கு, the mouth or organ of speech. 2. பாதம், the feet. 3. பாணி, the hands. 4. பாயுரு, the anus. 5. உபஸ்தம், the genitals. III. அந்தக்கரணம் or அந்தரிந்திரியம், the intellectual powers are four; viz.: 1. மனம், the organ of thought or perception, emotion. 2. புத்தி, understanding, conception, reason, intellect--the organs of examination, investigation, reflection, comparison, device, experiment. 3. ஆங்காரம், emotion, self-importance, inflation, presumption, energy, impulse, the organ of excitement, resolution, effort, &c. 4. சித்தம், volition, will, purpose, determination, that power of the mind which leads to the accomplishment of objects. 2. The sperm, seed of men, விந்து. இந்திரியகோசரம், s. Perceptibleness, capability of being determined by the senses, இந்திரியத்துக்குவிஷயமாகுகை. Wils. p. 132. INDRYAGOCHARA. இந்திரியக்காட்சி--இந்திரியப்பிரத் தியட்சம், s. Evidence of the senses. இந்திரியத்துவாரம், s. The inlets or avenues of the senses--as means of perception. இந்திரியநிக்கிரகம், s. The subjugation of the passions, இந்திரியமடக்குகை. இந்திரியநுகர்ச்சி, s. Enjoyment of sense, இந்திரியானுபவம். இந்திரியாசங்கம், s. iṉ (p. 57) adj. Sweet, pleasant, agreeable, இனிமையான. இன்சொல், s. See இனியசொல். இன்சொல்லுவமை, s. [in rhetoric.] A comparison between two things, one of which, though excelling, bears a resemblance to the other, உவமையணியி லொன்று. இன்னலம், s. Delight, merit, virtue, இனியநலம். இன்னிசை, s. Melody, harmony, இன்பமானவோசை. 2. A tune, இராகம். 3. (fig.) A kind of lute with seven strings, ஏழுநரம்புள்ளவீணை. இன்னிசைகாரர், s. Players on the lute, musicians, பாணர். இன்னிசைச்சிந்தியல்வெண்பா, s. The three-lined இன்னிசைவெண்பா, of which the two first have four சீர், the last only three, சிந்தியல்வெண்பாவிரண்டனு ளொன்று. இன்னிசைவெண்பா, s.
