As an adjective, மை is dropped before a consonant with a change of that, when required in combination, and அரு may be changed into அரிய with or without து, or the last vowel may be dropped, and the first lengthened as in ஆருயிர், precious life. அருங்கலைநாயகன், s. Buddha, the lord of eminent sciences, புத்தன். அருங்கலைவினோதன், s. one devoted to learning; one whose time is spent in cultivating the arts and sciences. அருங்கிடை, s. Rigid austerities. அருந்தவர், s. Ascetics. அருந்தூதன், s. A tormentor, one who inflicts pain, வேதனைசெய்வோன். அருமருந்து, s. Nectar, அமிர்தம். In classical works, this in the form அருமருந்தன்னபிள்ளை is contracted to அருமந்த, precious as nectar, as, அருமந்தபிள்ளை. A very dear child, அருமந்ததேர். A very costly chariot. அருமறை, s. The sacred Vedas. Ell. 145. 4. அருமறைக்கொடியோன், s. A name of Dronácharya, the military preceptor of the Pandavas and Kurus, because of the Vedic device on his banner. அருமைப்படுத்த, inf. To make scarce, hard, difficult. 2. To impart reluctantly, make much of. அரும்பண்டம், s. A rare article, choice wares, valuable commodity. அரும்பிணி, s. An incurable disease. (நாலடி.) Ell. 118. அரும்பூட்டு, s. [prov.] A girdle, waist-string, necklace, &c., so short as scarcely to be brought to meet, a string, rope, &c., so short as to be tied with difficulty, a bow-string so short as to be liable to break if brought up too far, any thing too little, too short, too narrow, &c., எட்டாப்பூட்டு. 2. Difficulty in settling a negotiation, agreement, &c., இணக்கக்கூடாமை. 3. Entanglement, ensnarement, மோசத்திலகப்படுகை. 4. Forced connection in language, clauses disconnected or not joined naturally, difficult or unnatural; construction, தொடர்ச்சி யின்மை. சொற்களையரும்பூட்டாய்த் தொடுத்துப்பேசினான். He spoke in an unconnected manner. அரும்பொருள், s. Excellent advice, hard doctrine, a rare or difficult meaning. 2. A choice or precious article. அருவினை, s. A great sin. அருவினைகளைந்து. The five great sins. தெய்வமொருவனென்றேத்தி யொருமித்திருந்தால் அருவினைகளைந்துமறும். The five great sins will be forgiven him who worships the one God with singleness of heart. (கம்பன்.) 5)

irṇṭu (p. 49) s. and adj. Two, இரண்டா மெண்.-- As an adjective prefix, it often becomes இரு and ஈர், double, இரட்டிப்பான-as இருநிறம், two colors, a double color; ஈர லகு, two syllables. See அலகு. இரண்டிலொன்றுசொல்லு. Say either this or that. நாடிரண்டுபட்டது. The country is divided into two factions. இரட்ட, inf. To double, repeat a motion, sound, action, &c., to reiterate. See இரட்டிக்க. இரட்டாங்காலி, s. [prov. prop. இரட்டைமரம்.] A double tree--especially of the palmyra species. இரட்டி, s. Double quantity, twice as much, இருபங்கு. அதற்கிரட்டிதருவேன். I will give double the quantity. பத்திரட்டி, s. Twice ten. இரட்டிக்க, inf. To double, repeat, reiterate, இரட்ட. 2. (c.) To return --as a disease, வியாதிமக்களிக்க. 3. To plough the second time, always crosswise, இரண்டாமுறையுழ. 4. To differ from, be discrepant, &c., வேறுபட. 5. To disagree--as different kinds of food eaten at once, to be indigested, போசனம் ஒவ்வா திருக்க. இந்தச்சாட்சியந்தச்சாட்சிக்கிரட்டிக்கிறது. This evidence differs from the other. மகரமிரட்டித்தது. The consonant ம், is doubled. நோயிரட்டிக்கின்றது. The pain is double what it was. 2. The disease has returned. இரட்டித்தசெலவு, s. Double expense. இரட்டித்துச்சொல்ல, inf. To repeat, say a thing a second time. 2. To make a discrepant statement, or a statement different from that of another. உழவிரட்டிக்க, inf. To plough the second time. இரட்டிப்பு, s. Two-fold, twice as much, a double quantity. 2. v. noun. Doubling, making two-fold. இரட்டு, s. Two-fold, இருமடங் கு. (p.) 2. (c.) Double-threaded cloth, either coarse or fine, sack-cloth, ஓர்வ கைச்சீலை. இரட்டுப்பை, s. A sack made of coarse cloth. இரட்டுறமொழிய, inf. To state a rule so that it may comprise another, the one plainly apparent, the other to be made out by study; or the use of terms of double meaning either of which serves to make good sense, though the ideas will be wholly different; or the use of terms by which one thing is employed and another implied. See உத்தி. (p.) இரட்டை, s. Two things naturally conjoined--as a double fruit, leaf, &c.; twins, two things alike, இரண்டொன் றானது. 2. (p.) Gemini in the zodiac, two females, மிதுனராசி. 3. Even, even numbers--opposed to ஒற்றை, இரட்டையெண்-as 6, 8, 24, &c. 4. A couple, tow, சேரடு. 5. A female songster, பாடுவிச்சி. ஒற்றையிரட்டைபிடித்தல். A kind of play, playing at odd and even. இரட்டைக்கிளவி, s. Double words imitating certain sounds, ஒலிக்கு றிப்பில்வருமிரட்டைமொழி--as சளசளவெனமழை த்தாரைகான்றன. (The clouds) poured a shower of rain, with a murmuring sound. (இராமா.) (p.) இரட்டைச்சுழி, s. The symbol ை of the vowel ஐ. 2. Two curls in horses, cattle, &c.--as இருசுழி. இரட்டைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the same word is repeated through the line, (see தொடை)--as ஒக் குமே யொக்குமே யொக்குமே யொக்கும் விளக்கினு ட்சீறெரியொக்குமே யொக்கும் குளக்கொட்டிப்பூவி னிறம், the color of the flower of the water-plant கொட்டி, resembles the delicate flame of the lamp. (p.) இரட்டைப்படவெண்ண, inf. To count even, making a series increasing by a common ratio--as 2, 4, 6, &c. இரட்டைப்பாக்கு, s. An arecanut with two eyes producing, if planted, two trees. இரட்டைப்பிள்ளை, s. Twins. 2. [prov.] A double young areca or cocoa-nut tree. இரட்டைப்புரிக்கயிறு, s. A rope or string made of two strands. இரட்டைமணிமாலை, s. A poem consisting of twenty verses of வெண்பா and கலித்துறை, or நேரிசைவெண்பா and ஆசி ரியவிருத்தம், and composed according to the rules of அந்தாதி. See பிரபந்தம். (p.) இரண்டகம், s. Treachery, perfidy, duplicity, dissimulation, double-dealing, துரோகம். (c.) இரண்டகம்நினைக்க, inf. To frame a treacherous design. இரண்டகம்பண்ண, inf. To betray, act treacherously, perfidiously. இரண்டகவாதி, s. A treacherous person, an insincere friend, துரோகி. இரண்டன்மை, s. Sameness, (lit.) being not two--as அத்துவைதம், which see. இரண்டாந்தரம், s. Secondary kind or class--as of cloth, tobacco, &c. 2. The second time. இரண்டாம்பட்சம், s. Second or secondary class, kind, &c., not the most approved. இரண்டாம்பாட்டன், s. A great grand-father, மூதாதை. இரண்டாவது, s. That which is the second. 2. adv. Secondly. இரண்டுக்குப்போக, inf. [vul.] To go to stool, (usage of children.) இரண்டுக்குற்றது, s. Critical juncture, a crisis in a disease, சாத்தியமோவசர த்தியமோவென்பது. 2. Dubiousness, possibility of two contrary impending issues, a double probability, இதுவோவதுவோவெ ன்கை. இரண்டுங்கெட்ட நேரம், s. [vul.] The dusk of the evening, used for an inauspicious or untimely season, &c. இரண்டுங்கெட்டவன், s. An indifferent man, neither good nor bad. இரண்டுசொல்ல, inf. To evade, refuse, give an indirect or evasive answer. இரண்டுசெய்ய, inf. To act perfidiously. 2. To act against one's command, to behave disobediently. இரண்டுநினைக்க, inf. To be hypocritical, to meditate treachery under a show of honesty. இரண்டுபட, inf. To vary from, differ in the issue or event, disagree, dissent, become opposed, வேறுபட. 2. To be discrepant, appear discordant, &c., ஒற்றுமையின்றாக. 3. To be doubtful, ஐயுற. இரண்டுபடுத்த, inf. To disjoin, disunite, cause to differ, sow dissension. இரண்டுபண்ண, inf. To act treacherously. இரு. Two, as இரண்டு and ஈர். இருகந்தம், s. Good and bad smell, இருமணம். (p.) இருகால், s. [vul. இருக்கால்.] Twice, இரண்டுவிசை. 2. A நேரிசைவெண்பா, consisting of two குறள் வெண்பா, and a foot affixed to the second line for the sake of harmony, ஓர் வகைவெண்பா. (p.) இருக்கால், s. A treatise written in confutation of the above. இருசீரகம், s. The two different kinds of சீரகம்--as நற்சீரகம் and கருஞ்சீரகம், which see. இருசுடர், s. The two lights--the sun and moon, சூரியசந்திரர். (p.) இருசுடர்த்தோற்றம், s. One of the divisions of பெருங்காப்பியம், சூரியசந்திரோத யங்களின்வருணனை. (p.) இருசுழி, s. A double curl as a mark. இருசுழியிருந்துண்டாலுமுண்ணும் இரந்துண்டா லுமுண்ணும். A person of a double curl may live in luxury or be reduced to beggary. இருதலைக்கொள்ளி, s. A brand burning at both ends. ஒருதலைக்கொள்ளிநடுவிலெறும்பைப்போலானே ன். I am like an ant between two fires; i. e. I am in straits. இருதலைப்பட்சி, s. A kind of bird fabled to have two heads. இருதலைமணியன், s. A snake said to have two heads--one at each end. இருதாரைக்கத்தி, s. Two-edged sword or knife. இருதிணை, s. The two classes உயர்திணை and அஃறிணை into which Tamil nouns are divided. (See திணை.) 2. The two classes into which creatures are divided, இயங்குதிணை and இயங்கரத்திணை, which see. (p.) இருநிதிக்கிழவன், s. Kuvêra, கு பேரன். (p.) இருநினைவு, s. (p.) ஈரறம், s. The two kinds of அறம், or virtuous actions according to the shasters; viz.: இல்லறம், matrimony and its accompanying household virtues; and துறவறம், the virtues of ascetic practice. A slanderous tongue. ஈரநாவுக்கெலும்பில்லை. There is no bone in the tongue of a slanderer. ஈரந்துவட்டல், v. noun. Rubbing off moisture from the head and body after bathing. ஈரப்பசுமை--ஈரப்பசை, s. uḷ (p. 67) s. The inside, the interior, that which is intrinsic, private, secret, esoteric, உள்ளிடம், 2. Mind, heart, soul, breast, உள்ளம். 3. Place, இடம். 4. As a nominal affix or postposition, it governs the dative and expresses in, within, among, of, out of, inner, interior, intrinsic, esoteric, ஏழ னுருபு. உள்ளிருந்தார்க்குத்தெரியுமுள்வருத்தம். Those of the household only are acquainted with its secret sorrows. உட்கரணம், s. The intellectual faculties. See இந்திரியம் and கரணம். உட்கருத்து, s. The inmost thought, the real purpose or motive, அகக்கருத்து. 2. Cordial affection, உட்பட்சம். 3. The intrinsic meaning of a passage, &c., கருத்துரை. உட்கருத்தாகப்பேச, inf. To become emaciated by disease or otherwise. 2. To be firmly rooted--as disease. உட்குத்துப்புறவீச்சு, s. A species of hepatic complaint attended with convulsions, ஓர்நோய். உட்குயிர், s. The Deity regarded as the life, or identified with the life or soul of each individual, உள்ளுயிர். உட்குறிப்பு, s. Aim, object, intention, உள்ளக்குறிப்பு. உட்குற்றம், s. Innate depravity. See உட்பகை. உட்கூதல், s. Internal cold, chill, slight fever. உட்கை, s. Palm of the hand, உள்ளங்கை. 2. A person who is privy to, a secret hand--as in உள்ளுளவு. 3. To eat as a god, or great personage, உண்ண. 2. To take food that has been consecrated to a deity, தேவப்பிரசாதமுட்கொள்ள. 3. To take food, medicine, to swallow, take in, imbibeas the earth does the rain, &c., விழுங்க. 4. To receive into the mind, meditate, or reflect upon, மனதிற்கொள்ள. 5. To wish for an occurrence, or to express desires mentally--as a deity or holy sage (the thing desired instantly talking place), திருவுளங்கொள்ள. 6. To have a secret object in view, to have in view, உட்கருத. உட்கோபம், s. Interior anger, malice. உட்கோள், s. The will, determination, internal, or inmost thought, உட்கருத்து. 2. Wish of the heart. 3. Opinion, belief, tenet, கோட்பாடு. உட்சங்கம், s. A select society, a committee, அகச்சங்கம். உட்சட்டை, s. An inner vest or tunic. உட்சமயம், s. The six religious systems of the followers of Siva, அகச் சமயம். உட்சாடை, s. The real object of an affair, the real feeling of the heart, உட்கருத்து. 2. Exposure of secrets by one of a party by signs, இரகசியங்களைச்ச மிக்கையாலறிவிக்கை. 3. The meaning, thing, &c., told or known to one's own party and differing from that which is made known to others, குழூஉக்குறி. உட்சீலை, s. An under or inner cloth. 2. The lining of a garment. உட்சவர், s. An inner wall, அகச் சுவர். 2. The interior of a wall, சுவரி னிடை. உட்சுவரிருக்கப்புறச்சுவர்தீற்றுகிறது. To whitewash the outside wall while neglecting the inside; i. e. to be scrupulously exact in external conduct, while the heart is full of wickedness; to attend to things remote while those at hand are neglected. உட்சூத்திரம், s. The main spring in a machine, any internal power or operation concealed from view, மூலசூத் திரம். 2. A clue, or key to an affair, உள்ளுபாயம். 3. The main spring in a business, மூலகாரணம். 4. A skilfully contrived rule in numbers, &c., நுட்பமான வகை. 5. A short, compendious and subtle method of ascertaining, or effecting a thing, இலேசானவகை. 6. (fig.) Internal meaning of a passage, real object in view, உட்குறிப்பு. உட்செல்ல, inf. To enter, insinuate one's self, உள்ளேபோக. உட்டுளை, s. Hollowness--as of a pipe or tube. உட்டுளைப்பொருள், s. Any thing tubular. உட்டெளிவு, s. Cleverness of mind, freedom from doubt, profound knowledge, அகத்தெளிவு. 2. The clear part of the liquid--as poured off from the sediment, வடித்தசாறு. 3. Soundness--as in timber, &c., உள்வைரம். 4. Inner measurment. உட்டேட்டம், s. The secret object or pursuit, as differing from profession, or appearances, மனநாட்டம். 2. Property acquired and kept secretly, உட்சம்பத்து. உட்பகை, s. Internal enmity, hatred or grudge, rancor at heart with professions of friendship. 2. Internal, innate, or secret foes attached to the soul, causing actions, &c., காமாதிக்குற்றங் கள். (For the six உட்பகை, see பகை.) 3. Hatred of a king by his professed friends, civil conspiracy, அரசருட்பகை. எட்பகவன்சிறுமைத்தேயாயினுமுட்பகையுள்ள தாங்கேடு. Though the internal hatred be as the fragment of a grain of rape seed, the consequent evil may be very great. உட்பக்கம், s. Subject of investigation or deduction in things of a mental, mystic, or spiritual character. See பக்கம். உட்பட, inf. To enter, be within, or under--as in age, உள்ளாக. 2. To engage in, be concerned in, to be, or become one of a party, or community; to be involved in, to be subject to, to yield to, to be obedient to, உடன்பட. 3. adv. Together with, inclusive. மூன்றுவயதுக்குட்பட்டபிள்ளை. A child under three years of age. அதுட்பட. That inclusive. மோசத்துக்குட்பட, inf. To fall into danger. உட்படி, s. A make-weight, உட்ப டிக்கல். உட்படுத்த, inf. To cause to enter, to introduce, அகப்படுத்த. 2. To persuade, proselyte, bring one into, or over to one's party, மதத்துக்குள்ளாக்க. 3. To include, involve, entrap, ensnare, சிக்கப்பண்ண. உட்பத்தியம், s. Abstinence from venery as a regimen while taking medicine, &c.; sometimes அகப்பத்தியம். உட்பந்தி, s. Vehemence, impetuosity, forcibleness, furiousness, மூர்க்கம். 4. Rapidity, speed, haste, velocity, விரைவு. 5. Hardness, tenacity, firmness, roughness, ruggedness, கடினம். 6. Excessiveness, intensity, immoderateness, vastness, exorbitancy, flagrancy, atrocity, malignity, heinousness, desperateness, மி குதி. 7. Ferocity, savageness, furiousness, violence, கோபம். 8. Strength, powerfulness, வன்மை. 9. Cutting in language, offensiveness, satiricalness, injuriousness, குரூரம். The leading character of this word in its different meanings is intensity. (See கொடுமை.) From this word id derived the symbolic verb கடிது. (3d person sing.) It is severe, &c., with any of the meanings of கடுமை. கடிசு, v. noun. Cheif persons, the eminent, பெரியோர். (நீதிநெறி.) தலையாய்ச்சல், v. noun. [prov.] The first process, time, &c., the front part. தலையாரி, s. Bailiff, peon, a village watchman, or any native officer to execute the commands of a Magistrate. அதிகாரிவீட்டிலே திருடித் தலையாரிவீட்டிலே வைத்தான். To write one's destiny in his head; ascribed to Brahma. தலையிலேறப்பார்க்க, inf. To endeavor to lord over others, or to treat them with disrespect. தலையிறக்கம், v. noun. Hanging the head through grief, chagri &c. தலையீற்று, v. noun. The first calving, yeaning, &c. 2. The firstling of cattle. தலையீற்றுப்பசு--தலையீற்றுக்கடாரி, s. A cow that has calved but once. தலையுடைக்க, inf. To break the head; i. e. to rack the brains and take great trouble in calculations, intricate business, &c. எவ்வளவாய்த்தலையுடைத்துக்கொண்டாலுங்கே ட்கிறானில்லை. Though I break me head for him. ever so much, he does not regard me. தலையுவா,s. The new moon. (p.) தலையெடுக்க, inf. To rise in circumstances, to recover one's standing. 2. To return to the attack when beaten by force. 3. To become eminent, celebrated. distinguished. 4. (lit.) To raise the head. தத்திக்குத்தித்தலையெடுத்துக்கொண்டான். He has risen in life, after many misfortunes. தலையெடுப்பு, v. noun. Amendment of circumstance. 2. Recovery from ruin. 3. Growing up, and establishing one's self in life, as a youth. 4. Loftiness. eminence, superiority, distinction. 5. Holding the head erect. தலையெடுப்பாய்ப்பேசாதே. Don't be arrogant in your remarks. தலையெடுப்பானகோபுரம். A lofty tower. தலையெழுத்து, s. Destiny, fate, as supposed to be written in the head by Brahma, according to the actions of previous births, தலைவிதி. 2. Signature to a bond or instrument, inserted at the beginning. 3. The heading or title of a book. 4. The first or capital letter in a writing. தலையேறுதண்டம், s. [prov.] Punishment above what one is able to bear. 2. (fig.) Excessive trouble or labour; compulsory service, அநியாயதண்டம். தலையைக்கொடுக்க--தலைகொடுக்க, inf. To step forward in one's behalf, in a case of exigency. 2. To expose one's self to danger for another. தலையைச்சுற்றியெறிய, inf. To detest utterly; to reject with disgust, disdain and scorn. தலையைநடுக்க, inf. To feel dizziness, sickness, slight intoxication--as from betel, tobacco, spirits, &c. தலையோடு, s. The skull. தலைவணங்க, inf. To do homage. 2. To fall or bend down--as corn in the field. See தலைமடங்க. தலைவரி, s. Poll-tax. 2. Heading. தலைவலி--தலைநோ, s. Headache. இதுதலைவலிதான். This is a task uselessly imposed. தலைவலியுங்காய்ச்சலுந் தனக்குவந்தாலல்லோதெ ரியும். Headache and fever, are know to the sufferer; i. e. each one knows his own trials. தலைவழிய, inf. To over-flow, as a cup or vessel. தலைவறை, s. A head land, cape, promontory. (Rare.) தலைவன், s. (plu. தலைவர், தலைவமார்.) A chief, a head man. 2. A king, a ruler, a governor. 3. An elder brother. 4. A husband. 5. A superior, a senior. (சது.) 6. A guru. 7. A master. தலைவாசகம், s. Introduction of a writing; preface, salutation, &c. முகவுரை. தலைவாசல்--தலைவாயில்--தலைவாய்தல், s. The main gate to a city, castle, house, &c. தலைவாரை--தலைவாரைப்பட்டை, s. [prov.] A basket cap, as தலைப்பட்டை. தலைவாழையிலை, s. The top leaf of a plantain tree. தலைவி, s. (mas. தலைவன்.) A lady, a mistress, a matron. 2. A wife, மனைவி. தலைவிதி, s. Fate written in the head. See தலையெழுத்து. தலைவிரிகோலம், s. Dishevelled locks of persons in a fright, in sorrow, &c. தலைவிரிச்சான், appel. n. One with matted hair, தலைமயிர்முடியாதவன். 2. A plant, சாரணை. 3. The plant செருப்படை. தலைவிரிச்சான்கூட்டம், s. A nickname given to the female sex, ஸ்திரீசனம். தலைவிரிச்சான் கூட்டந் தடியெடுத்தாலோட்டம். An effeminate mob is routed with a staff. தலைவிலை, s. The first or harvest price of grain, when it is plentiful, &c. தலைவிழுவான், appel. n. He (his head) will lie low--an expression of ill will. தலைவெட்ட, inf. To strike off the measure. 2. To behead, to decapitate. 3. (fig.) To do a treacherous act. தலைவெட்டுகிறவன். A villain. தலைவெட்டுங்காரியமோ. Is it a capital crime? தலைவெட்டு, v. noun. The first cutting. தலைவைக்க, inf.
