[vul., prop. அச்சுவினி.] The first constellation, or lunar asterism, of the Hindus; which, besides indicating both the horns in the ram's head, and by two stars the base of the greater triangle of the head, comprehends one in the left foot of Andromeda. To lay a foundation for any building, அஸ்திவாரம்போட. 2. To take measures, undertake, make preparations, முயற்சிசெய்ய. அடிக்கடி, adv. Frequently, often repeatedly, reiteratedly, பலமுறை. அடிக்குடி, s. Suburbs; ex குடி, village. அடிக்குடில், s. The suburb of a town, 2. A village of the Vedda people. அடிக்குள்ளே. Within a moment, in the same moment, before the next step is taken. அடிச்சால், s. To discover one's footstep, காலடையாளம்பார்க்க. அடிபெயர, inf. To start, take a step, move from the spot where one stands, பேர. அடிப்பட, inf. To be in subjection, கீழ்ப்பட. அடிப்படுத்த, inf. To subdue, subject a country, a foe, bring into possession, கீழ்ப்படுத்த. அடிப்படை, s. The chief division of an army. 2. The first layer in a well, &c. அடிப்பட்டகாந்தி, s. one of the thirty-two kinds of prepared arsenic. அடிப்பட்டசாந்தி, s. Great meekness. அடிப்பட்டசான்றோர், s. Ancient sages. அடிப்பதற, inf. To tremble as the feet, கானடுங்க. 2. (fig.) [prov.] To fail in business, lose a situation, wife or property. 3. To be perplexed in consequence of failure, &c. அடிப்பந்தி, s. Head of the table or row of guests. அடிப்பலம், s. The first benefit or advantage received by a person, முதற்பலன். அடிப்பற்ற, inf. To be scorched-as rice by heat with want of water, &c., சுண்டுபற்ற, 2. To stick to the bottom of a vessel when boiling, அடியிலொட்ட. அடிப்பாடு, s. Path, way, beaten path, பாதை. 2. Usage, custom, பழக்கம். அடிப்பாய, inf. To leap as a child over a mark, play at leap-frog, தாண்ட. அடிப்பாரம், s. Ballast, the first layer of goods in a vessel. அடிப்பார்க்க, inf. To deliberate, think how to act யோசிக்க. 2. To measure time by the shadow, நிழலளந்து பொ ழுதுகுறிக்க. அடிப்பினை, s. Sand mixt with lead, வங்கமணல். அடிப்போட, inf. To begin, undertake, make the first effort, effect an object, தொடங்க. அடிமடக்கு, s. [in prosody.] Repetition of a word or words with different meanings in the beginning of a line, or the repetition of a line in a verse with different meanings, சித்திரக்கவியி லொன்று, as, ஆகங்கண்டகராலற்றவாடவர், ஆகங் கண்டகராலற்றவன்பினர். அடிமடி, s. A secret place in the waistcloth, உள்மடி. அடிமடை, s. The commencement of a water channel, முதல்மடை. அடிமண், s. The earth adhering to one's feet, taken for enchantments against him (வசியம்) or for witchcraft, காலிலொட்டியமண். அடிமயக்கு, s. Transposing the lines of a verse without destroying the sense, அடிமாற்றுகை. 2. A verse so formed, ஓர்பா, as, அங்கண்மதியமரவின்வாய்ப்பட்டென்ப, பூசல்வாயாப்புலம்புமனைகலங்கி. அடிமறிமண்டிலவாசிரியப்பா, s. One of the four kinds of ஆசிரியம், the lines of which are interchangeable at pleasure, the meaning remaining the same, ஓர்வகையாசிரியப்பா. அடிமறிமாற்றுப்பொருள்கோள், s. Construction in which the lines of a stanza are interchangeable, the harmony and meaning remaining the same, or the harmony only slightly affected. See பொருள்கோள், as, சுரையாழவம்மிமிதப்பவரையனை ய, யானைக்குநீத்துமுயற்குநிலையென்ப கானகநாடன் சுனை. அடிமுகனை, s. [vul.] Beginning-as of a story, &c. அடிமுடி, s. Order, regularity, வர லாறு. 2. From beginning to end, ஆதியந் தம். 3. Upside down, கீழ்மேல். 4. Head and foot, காலுந்தலையும். அடிமுரண்டொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which the first word of a line has a meaning opposite to that of the next, செய்யுட்டொடை யிலொன்று, as, இருள்பரந்தன்னமாநீர்மருங்கின், நிலவுகுவித்தன்னவெண்மணலொருசிறை, where darkness and moonlight are opposite. அடிமோனைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhyme in which each line begins with the same letter, ஓர் வகை மோனைத்தொடை. அடியடியாக, adv. [prov.] In succession, as the descent of title, &c., தலைமுறை தலைமுறையாக. அடியந்தாதி, s. A repetition in verse. See அந்தாதி. அடியளபெடை, s. Prolonging the sounds of long vowels at the beginning of every line, தொடைவிகற்பத்தொன்று. அடியறுக்கி, s. A flat piece of wood by which the potter marks his work and cuts it from the wheel below, மட்கலமறுக்குங்கருவி. அடியனாதி, s. Time immemorial, antiquity, தொன்றுதொட்டுள்ளகாலம். அடியார், s. [sing. அடியான்--அடி யாள்.] Slaves, servants as applied to devotees in reference to their deity, and used by persons of themselves in addressing superiors, to show respect, obedience or submission, தொண்டர். அடியிட, inf. To set on foot, commence an undertaking, a law suit, &c., தொடங்க. 2. To make a beginning in braiding--as the bottom of a basket, the first end of a mat, &c., பாய்முதலியவை முடைதற்கு அடியிட. அடியுரம், s. [prov.] Ancestral property, original stock. 2. Crop of a past year reserved for the sustenance of the following. 3. Manure put on the soil round a tree, &c., எரு. 4. Strength from food, power of wealth, &c.; ex உரம், strength. அடியெடுத்துவைக்க, inf. To begin to walk as children. அடியெதுகைத்தொடை, s. One of the forty-three kinds of rhymes in which the second letters of each line are of the same class, ஓரெதுகைத்தொடை. அடியேன், s. I your slave, your humble servant. அடியோடுகெட, inf. To be destroyed utterly, extirpated. அடியோட்டி, s. A triangular instrument with spikes, which, however placed, has one spike upward to pierce the feet of men or cattle; used in war, &c., a caltrop. அடிவயிறு, s. The lower part of the belly, the abdomen, கீழ்வயிறு. அடிவரலாறு, s. Source, principle, cause, காரணம். 2. Beginning, origin, bottom of a thing, தொடக்கம். 3. Ancient lines of ancestry, வமிசவரலாறு. அடிவரலாறாகத்தெரிதல். Understanding from the first. அடிவருட, inf. To chafe, stroke, or shampoo the legs of another. அடிவாரம், s. The foot of a hill, சாரல். அடிவானம், s. Horizon, திகாந்தம். அடிவிட--அடிவிரிய--அடிவிள்ள, inf. [prov.] To be cracked as the bottom of a chatty, &c. by use, அடியுடைய. அடிவைக்க, inf. To step, set a step, காலடிவைக்க. 2. To begin to walk as a child, நடக்கத்தொடங்க. 3. To intrude one's self into an affair, தலையிட. 4. To begin a work, ஆரம்பிக்க. மலையடிப்பட்டி, s. āṟu (p. 43) s. and adj. Six (6.) six things, ஓரெண். 2. As a prefix to words beginning with consonants, the initial is often shortened, especially when the number is specific--as அறுசுவை, the six flavors. (c.) அவ்வாறு. Six by six, six to each, six of each. அறுகுணன், s. The deity--he who possesses the six attributes, கடவுள்; [ex குணம், quality.] (p.) அறுகோணம், s. A hexagon. 2. A magical diagram of two equilateral triangles, one laid over the other so that their sides may be parallel, making six outward and six inward angles. அறுசமயம், s. The six systems of religion maintained by Hindus. See சமயம். அறுதொழிலோர், s. Brahmans-from the six duties prescribed to them, வேதியர். See தொழில், office. அறுபகை, s. The six hurtful propensities--as காமம், &c. See பகை. அறுபருவம், s. The six seasons of the year--as கார், கூதிர், &c. See பருவம். அறுபொழுது, s. The six different portions of the day; 1. மாலை, the first four hours after sunset, or ten nalikies. 2. யாமம், four hours, or ten nalikies after மாலை. 3. வைகறை, four hours after யாமம் or before sunrise. 4. காலை or விடியல், four hours after sunrise or வைகறை. 5. நண்பகல், from eleven A. M. to two P. M. 6. ஏற்பாடு, from three to six P. M. அறுவர், s. Six persons--men or women. (p.)--Note. For other similar words, see அறு. ஆறங்கம், s. The six subjects embraced in வேதாங்கம்; which see. A swelling in the cheek from the venereal disease, கன்னத்தில்வருமோர்நோய். கன்னக்கோல், s. An implement for breaking through the walls of houses, கன்னகம். கன்னக்கோல்வைக்க--கன்னமிட, inf. To commit burglary by breaking through a wall. கன்னசூலை, s. A tumor in the region of the cheek, one of the arthritic class of diseases. See சூலை. கன்னத்தட்டு, s. [as கன்னம்.] The dish of a balance, சிறுதராசுத்தட்டு. கன்னத்திலேயடிக்க--கன்னத்திலே யறைய--கன்னத்திற்போட inf. To slap the face, to box the ears. கன்னபரம்பரைஞானம்--கன்னபா ரம்பரியம். s. Tradition, oral transmission of intelligence, history, news, meaning, &c., பரம்பரைக்கேள்வியால்வந்தஞானம். கன்னபாகம், s. The ear, காது. கன்னபூரம், s. A kind of ear-ornament, காதணியினொன்று. 2. The ear, காது. கன்னபூஷணம், s. Ear-ornaments, காதணி. கன்னப்பரிசை, s. The whiskers or beard on the cheek. கன்னப்பள்ளம், s. The hollow of the cheek. கன்னப்பிளவை, s. A cancer or scirrous affection in the cheek--as கபோ லப்பிளவை. கன்னப்பூ, s. A kind of female ear-ornament, காதணியிலொன்று. கன்னப்பொறி, s. The temples, the upper part of the side of the head, காதினருகானபொறி. கன்னமதம், s. Secretion from the temples of the elephant, யானைமும்மதத்தி லொன்று. கன்னமீசை, s. [prov.] The whiskers. கன்னமூலம், s. A poem in which each verse has three things for its theme, முச்சொல்லலங்காரம்-as ஆறுநேராகிவூரும் அரசனோடேறுமாறானகுடியும் புருஷனோடுதாறுமாறானமனைவியும்இம்மூன்றும்நீறுநீறா கிவிடும், a town near a river, subjects in rebellion against their king, a wife disobedient to her husband; these three will go to ashes. திரிகண்டகம், s. Solder, நவக்ஷாரம். 2. Alkaline salt, எவக்ஷாரம். 3. Another kind of salt, சத்திசாரம். திருசிரபுரம்--திரிசிராப்பள்ளி, s. Trichinopoly, so called, it is said, from a Rakshasa who first dwelt in the place, and had three heads. திரிசூலம், s. The trident, முத்தலைவேல். See பினாகம். திருச்சிரமம், s. As திரிதண்டசந்நியாசி. appel. n. An ascetic who has acquired the command over his mind, body and speech, கரணமூன்றுமடக்கினோன். திரிதிகை--திரிதியை, s. The third day of the moon, either in its increase or decrease, மூன்றாந்திதி. திரிதீர்க்கம், s. One of the ten points in the horoscope of the bride and the bridegroom. See தசப்பொருத்தம். திரிதேகம், s. Three kinds of bodies. See சரீரத்திரயம். திரிதோஷம், s. The three humors of the body, முப்பிணி. 2. Vitiation of the three humors, as the cause of diseases, ஓர்நோய். திரிதோஷசன்னி, s. A fit from the above disease. திரித்துவம்--திரியத்துவம், s. (Chris. usage.) The Trinity. திரிநேத்திரன், s. Siva, the three-eyed, சிவன். Compare முக்கண்ணன். திரிபங்கி, s. A curiously wrought poem, one of the மிறைக்கவி, a stanza which may be turned into three others, and give three different meanings. See சித் திரகவி. திரிபதார்த்தம், s. The three eternal unoriginated things in the universe. as treated of in the சித்தாந்தம் philosophy, viz.: 1. பசு, soul; 2. பதி, deity; 3. பாசம், natural or moral evil. Among Vedantists சித்து, அசித்து, ஈச்சுரன். திரிபதகை, s. The Ganges, fancied to run through three worlds கங்கை. திரிபதாகி, s. One of the மிறைக்கவி, or curious poems. திரிபதாகை, s. A mode of using the hands in dancing. See காலட்சணம். திரிபலம்--திரிபலை, s. The three Myrobalan or medicinal fruits, often used in Indian medicines, 1. கடுக்காய், gallnuts, Terminalia chebula; 2. நெல்லிக் காய், Phyllanthus emblica; 3. தான்றிக்காய், Terminalia bellerica. திரிபலையேனாதி, s. An electuary compounded of the three fruits and other ingredients. திரிபழுகம், s. The three delicacies, milk, பால்; clarified butter, நெய்; and honey, தேன். திரிபாகி, s. One of the மிறைக்கவி, a curious poem in which a word of three letters when taken regularity gives one meaning, and when the first, second or third letter is taken away will give in each case a different meaning. திரிபுசம், s. Triangle. (Sa. Tribhaja.) திரிபுடி, s. The three qualities, 1. ஞாதுரு, soul, ஆன்மா; 2. ஞானம், wisdom. knowledge, அறிவு; 3. ஞேயம், that which is known, அறியப்படுபொருள். திரிபுடை--திரிபுடைதாளம், s. A mode of beating time, &c. திரிபுண்டரம், s. The three lined mark of the Saiva sect, three streaks of ashes on the forehead, நெற்றியில்விபூதி. திரிபுரம், s. [in mythol.] The three cities, or castles, severally of iron, silver, and gold, floating in the sky one above another; destroyed by Siva for embracing the Jaina tenets, முப்புரம். The chiefs of the castles were, கமலன், கமலாட் சன், and விச்சுவமாலி. திரிபுரசுந்தரி, s. Parvati, பார்வதி. திரிபுரதகனன், s. (St.) Siva, சிவன்; [ex தகனன், who burnt.] திரிபுரமல்லிகை, s. (St.) A medicinal plant, apparently a kind of jasmine. திரிபுரமெரித்தான், appel. n. Siva, who burnt and destroyed திரிபுரம், சிவன். 2. A tree, நொச்சி, Vitex. 3. The மாவிலிங்கு tree. திரிபுராந்தகன், s. Siva, as destroyer of the three cities, சிவன்; [ex அந்தகன்.] திரிபுரி, s. A plant. See சாரணை. (R.) திரிபுரை, s. The Indian triad, Brahma, Vishnu and Siva. திரிமூலம், s. Three kinds of medicinal roots, 1. திப்பிலிமூலம், of long-pepper; 2. சித்திரமூலம், of plumbago; 3. கண்டு மூலம், of a medicinal plant. திரியத்துவம்--திரியேகத்துவம்--திரியே கம். s. (Chris. usage.) Triune, trinity. திரியம்பகன், s. Siva, as the threeeyed, சிவன்; sometimes Vishnu; [ex அம் பகம், eye.] திரியவத்தை--திரியாவஸ்தை, The Three states of the mind. See அவத்தை. திரியாங்கம், s. A calendar embracing three parts or members, out of the five given in the native calendars; viz.: திதி, வாரம், நட்சத்திரம். See பஞ்சாங்கம். திருயேககடவுள்--திரியேகன், s. (Chris. usage.) God the Father, the son, and the Holy Ghost, which three are one. திரிலிங்கம், s. A mode of using the hands in dancing. (See காலட்சணம்.) 2.
