iẕu (p. 55) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To draw, pull, haul, drag, tug, drag to justice, to drag along the ground, ஈர்க்க. 2. To attract--as a magnet, ஊசி முதலியவீர்க்க. 3. To attract--as a snare, to entice, allure, inveigle, seduce, draw over to one's interests, வசமாக்க. 4. To strain, stretch, lengthen or attenuate by pulling, to draw out, நெடுகச்செய்ய. 5. To drag one into an affair, to cite, force one to court, &c., to drag one's name, &c. in support of an argument or practice, வலிகக. 6. To upbraid, drag out one's faults to view, to cast reproaches, insults, &c., புறத்திலிழு க்க. 7. To draw into, swallow up, engulph --as a stream, a whirl-pool, a whirl-wind, சுழித்துவாங்க. 7. To absorb--as a sponge, to absorb humors from the body, to draw-as a medicine or plaster, உறிஞ்ச. 8. To draw out the voice, lengthen the sound properly in singing, to draw in speaking, reading, &c., நீட்டிப்பேச. 9. To strain muscularly, distort the features or limbs in spasms, &c., to have the cramp, to be convulsed; in this sense, it is often used impersonally, வலியிழுக்க. 1. v. n. To linger, to be protracted, தாமதிக்க. இழுத்துப்பாடு. Sing, dwelling on the notes. தாய்வருமளவும்பேச்சிழுத்தாள். She protracted, continued the conversation, till her mother came. அந்தவழக்குவெகுபணமிழுத்துப்போட்டது. That law-suit has swallowed up a great deal of money. காரியமிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகின்றது. The affair is protracted, the business is delayed, being involved in various intricacies. இப்படியிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநின்றாலொன்றுந்தீராது. If you protract the matter so carelessly, you cannot expect a happy result. வழக்கிலேயிழுத்துவிட்டார்கள். They have dragged the matter into court. ஊர்க்காரியங்களையிழுக்க To make a long story, unnecessarily talking of other people's affairs. உன்காரியத்திலென்னையிழாதே. Do not draw me into your affairs, as a witness, party, &c. காரியத்திலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுநிற்கிறார்கள். They pull against or away from each other-as two parties, &c., they dissent, are unsettled (fig.), from the idea of two beasts tied together. இழுத்துக்கொண்டுவர, inf. To put off from day to day. என்கடனைத்தீர்க்காமலிழுத்துக்கொண்டுவருகிறான். He delays to pay the debt he owes me. இழுத்துப்பேச, inf. To speak drawlingly. இழுத்துவலிக்க, inf. To draw in a rope, or cord--as attached to a net, paper-kite, &c. இழுத்துவிட, inf. To put off, to protract, to delay, continue putting off and never fulfilling. 2. To bring into court, indict, prosecute, expose to the public. மடியைப்பற்றியிழுக்க, inf. To seize one's lap and pull him. காலிழுத்துநடக்க, inf. To trail the leg in walking--as a lame man. இழுபறி, s. A scuffle, a struggle, strife, squabble, வாது. இழுப்பு, v. noun. Drawing, pulling, draught, a pull, a tug, a twitch, இழுக் கை. 2. Attracting, attraction, allurement, inviting, engaging. 3. Distortion of the limbs or features by convulsions, cramp, &c. 4. Absorption. 5. Draught or force of a current, wind, &c. 6. Procrastination, tardiness, protraction, suspense, uncertainty. The meanings of the verb generally are applicable also to the verbal noun. அதிலே முன்னிழுப்புப்பின்னிழுப்பில்லை. In that matter, there can be no dispute one way or the other. இழுப்பறை, s. A box in a case, a drawer. இழுப்பாட்டம், s. Tardiness, protraction, procrastination. இழுப்பாட்டியம், s. [prov.] Procrastination, protraction, tardiness, delay--used instead of இழுப்பாட்டம். இழுப்பாணி, s. [prov.] A delayer, postponer, lingerer. 2. A moveable peg that fastens the yoke to the beam of the plough. இழுப்புண்ண, inf. To be drawn unwillingly--as some persons when they are compelled to attend court; to be forced or dragged into an affair. 2. To be allured, seduced, decoyed; to be diverted from the business in hand, be tempted, be led away by lust, be ensnared, சிக்கிக்கொள்ள. இழுப்புப்பறிப்புப்பட, inf. [vul.] To scuffle, struggle, contend. 2. To pull one another--as persons intoxicated, or in play. இழுவல், v. noun. [prov.] The act of drawing. 2. Putting off, lingering, delaying, postponing. 3. One who neglects his own affairs and busies himself with those of others. அவனொரு இழுவல். He is a busy-body, drawn into every one's business. இழுவை, v. noun. A being drawn, draught, இழுப்பு. 2. Any thing drawn-as a draught of thorns, timbers, fishes, &c., இழுக்கப்பட்டவை. 3. A long rope for draught, இழுக்கும்வடம். 4. The mark or point made on the ground by a thing drawn, சுவடு. இழுவைகண்டாலடிப்பார்க்கிறதேன்? When the track in which the thing was dragged is plain, why look for footsteps? 37)

utṟu (p. 60) கிறேன், உதறினேன், வேன், உதற, v. a. To shake off, throw off by shaking, to shake a thing, especially a cloth; to shake the feet, hands, &c.; to shake itself --as an animal; to shake the head--as a dog having something in its mouth, உதறிப் போட. 2. To shake or thrust off a person, animal or thing that adheres to one; to extricate one's self from another in wrestling by shaking, pushing, &c., விதிர்க்க. 3. To shake off a business, affairs, office, &c., தள்ளிவிட. 4. To snatch or wrest one's self from the grasp of another. (See திமிற.) 5. (fig.) To renounce friends and social life for the desert--as an ascetic, நீக்க. 6. To strike--as the hands, feet, &c. through pain, grief, fear, anger, &c., துக்கமுதலியவற் றாற்கைவிதிர்க்க. 7. v. n. To shake with ague, fever, palsy, &c., நடுங்க. உதறிக்கொண்டுபோகிறான். He is refractory. இனஞ்சனம்யாவையுமுதறிவிட்டுப்போனான். He has utterly renounced his relations and friends--as a devotee, or to form other connections. என்வார்த்தையையுதறிவிடாதே. Do not reject what I say. உதறிமுறிப்பான், s. The விஷ்ணு காந்தை plant, Spharanthus Indicus. உதறுகாலி, s. A cow that kicks, or twitches away its leg and will not be milked, உதறுகாற்பசு. 2. A woman that shakes her feet in walking, உதறுகாற் பெண்--such a woman is supposed to bring evil upon her children and household. உள்ளதையுங்கெடுத்தாளுதறுகாலிவந்து. When this woman who shakes her feet in walking joined the family she destroyed all its wealth. கையையுதற, inf. To shake the hands when under the influence of strong emotion, especially grief. 4) *

ēcu (p. 78) கிறேன், ஏசினேன், வேன், ஏச, v. a. To abuse, to reproach, to rail at, to vilify, to insult grossly, இகழ. ஏசாதவர், appel. n. The unimpeachable, the good, நல்லோர். 2. The gods, தேவர். (சது.) (p.) ஏசிக்காட்ட, inf. To reproach one with a wrong he has done; to rail at, twit one. ஏசுகை, v. noun. Reproaching, railery, abuse. ஏச்சு, v. noun. Abuse, affront, insult, scurrility, calling opprobrious names, இகழ்ச்சி. ஓரூர்ப்பேச்சோரூர்க்கேச்சு. Good language of one district is abuse in another. ஏச்சுக்காட்ட, inf. kīccu (p. 113) s. The chirping of birds, புள் ளொலி. 2. The whining of infants, கீச்சழுகை. கீச்சிட, inf. to chirp--as birds, lizards, monkeys; to twitter; to speak or call with a shrill sound; to squeak, to cry-as an infant, to scream, கீச்சென்றுகத்த. கீச்சுக்குரல், s. A shrill voice, a feminine or childish voice, மெல்லியகுரல். கீச்சுக்குரலாய்ப்பேச, inf. To squeak, to speak in a shrill voice. 9)

kuṇṭi (p. 118) s. The buttocks, backside, fundament, seat, rump of an animal; any rump-like protuberance, ஆசனபக்கம். 2. The kidney, பிருக்கம். 3. The heart, இருதயம். 4. The roe or spawn of a fish, மீன்சினை. 5. The lower end of fruits, nuts, &c.; that opposite the stalk, பழத்தின்கீழ்ப்புறம். குண்டிகழுவ, inf. To wash after passing excrements. குண்டிகழுவாதவர்கள், s. Those who do not wash themselves; a term of reproach given to Europeans--the practice being regarded as filthy. குண்டிக்காய், s. Kidneys, பிருக்கம். குண்டிக்குப்பின்னேபேச, inf. To backbite, to speak ill of one behind his back; low, and in anger. குண்டிக்கொழுப்பு, s. Pride, wantonness, arrogance, sauciness, insolence. குண்்டிச்சீலையைப்போட்டுக்கடக்க, inf. [prov.] To take an oath by stepping over the cloth taken from the waist; as practised by the lower castes. குண்டிமண்ணைத்தட்டிவிட்டோட, inf. [prov.] To leave, renounce or desert a person, thing, &c.; lit. to wipe off the dust of the buttocks and run away, விட் டுவிட. 2. To outwit, to out-scheme, to out-do another in cheating, &c., தந்திரத் திலேவெல்ல. குண்டியடிபடவிழ, inf. To fall on the buttocks from a height. குண்டியும்வாயும்பொத்த, inf. To stand in great awe of a person; to be much afraid; lit. to stop the mouth by one hand and put the other behind to save a kick, &c. குண்டியெலும்பு, s. The os sacrum, ஆச னவென்பு. குண்டிவற்ற, s. inf. [prov.] To be reduced as the mettle, arrogance; lit. the buttocks to be dry, பெருமையடங்க.

kulam (p. 127) s. [in poet. குலன்.] Tribe, family, lineage, race; caste, nation, people, சாதி. 2. Herd, flock, shoal, assemblage, collection, கூட்டம். 3. Kind, class, species, sort, genus, இனம். 4. House, abode, மனை. 5. Royal palace, அரமனை. Wils. p. 233. KULA. 6. Family, rank, respectability or eminence of descent, உயர்குலம். 7. (Rott.) An inhabited country, குடி. 8. (பிங்.) The twentyseventh lunar asterism, or nacshatra; also, the time the moon accupies in traversing the nacshatra, இரேவதி. குரங்கானாலுங்குலத்திலெடு. Though an ape, let a wife be from one's own family. குலங்குப்பையிலே பணம்பந்தியிலே. Rank or caste is on the dung-hill, while wealth sits in state; i. e. the wealthy are honored. கோடாலிக்காம்பு குலத்துக்கீனம். The axehandle brings ruin to its race (by assisting to cut down trees)--spoken of a person who brings disgrace and ruin to his family. குலகன்மம், s. Customs attaching to a family, through successive generations, குலாசாரம். Wils. p. 233. KULAKARMMA. குலகாயம், s. The rules or regulations of caste, குலவொழுக்கம். இதுனக்குக்குலகாயமாயிருக்கிறது. This is the custom of your family or tribe. குலகூடஸ்தன், s. The first ancestor of a race or lineage. குலக்கொடி--குலஸ்திரீ--குலபத்தினி --குலாங்கனை, s. The lawful wife. 2. A woman reputed for chastity. 3. A woman of good family and caste, and of repute for chastity. குலக்கொழுந்து, s. A rare son, the sprout or hope of the family. குலவிளக்கு, s. A light to the family or caste-spoken of a chaste matron. குலங்கெட்டவன், s. One who has lost his caste; an object, low-caste fellow. குலசிரேட்டன்--குலஸ்தன்--குலத்தன்-குலமான், s. One born of a good family. குலட்சயம், s. The ruin or decay of a family or tribe. wills. p. 233. KULAKSHAYA. குலதருமம், s. The customs, duties, offices, &c., peculiar to, or proper for, a caste, &c. Wils. 233. KULAD'HARMMA. குலதிலகம்--குலதிலதம், s. One who is an honor to his family; the respectable head of a family. 2. Very pure lineage; eminence of caste. Wils. p. 233. KULATILAKA. குலதம்பிரான்--குலகுரு, s. A family guru, the guru of a race or tribe. குலதெய்வம், s. The family, tutelary deity. 2. The deity of the tribe. குலத்துக்குத்தக்ககுணம், s. Disposition, habits, or propensities peculiar to a caste. குலத்துக்குத்தக்கநடை, s. Behaviour suitable to one's caste. குலந்தெரிக்க, inf. To dwell on another's parentage--commonly in ridicule. குலபதி, s. The head of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 233. KULAPATI. குலப்பகை, s. Natural antagonism between different species--as between cats and dogs. 2. In-bred malice, hatred, &c., between tribes, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழி, s. Offence or malice, perpetuated from generation to generation. குலப்பழுது--குலவடு, s. Stigma on a family. 2. Meanness of caste. குலப்பரத்தை, s. A courtezan by birth, or ancestry. 2. A courtezan, not common but kept by one man; a kept mistress. குலமகள்--குலப்பெண், s. THe lawful wife. 2. A woman of good caste, reputed for chastity. குலமக்கட்கழகுதன்கொழுநனைப்பேணுதல். It is becoming in a lawful and virtuous wife to cherish and honor her husband. குலமகன், s. A man of respectable caste. 2. A legitimate son. குலமங்குதல், v. noun. Being reduced in respectability, circumstances, &c. குலமணி, s. A genuine gem; (fig.) one of an illustrious birth. குலமிலான்--குலவீனன், s. A man of low caste. குலமுறைகிளத்த--குலஞ்செப்ப, inf. To give the genealogy of a family. குலங்கூற--குலம்பேச, inf. To twit one of low parentage. 2. To boast or talk of one's own or another's high birth. குலம்புகுந்தவன், s. One who has mingled with persons of a strange caste, a term of reproach. குலம்பெயர, inf. [prov.] To be changed for the better or worse--as a tree by transplanting; to improve or degenerate. குலவித்தை, s. The arts, duties, or employments peculiar to a family or caste. குலவிருது, s. The standard or banner peculiar to a family. 2. A peculiarity or propensity in an individual, common to his family. குலாசாரம், s. The custom, usage, duties, rites, &c., of a caste or tribe. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARA. குலாசாரங்காட்டுகிறான். He betrays his family or caste propensities. குலாசாரியன், s. The family priest-as குலகுரு. Wils. p. 234. KULACHARYYA. குலாதிக்கன், s. One of high caste or family, குலசிரேட்டன். குலாபிமானம், s. Family pride, pride of birth. 2. Respectability of caste, family, &c., சாதிமானம். Wils. p. 234. KULAB'HIMANA. குலிஞன்--குலிஞ்சன், s. A person of a high family, of honorable descent, &c., குலமுள்ளோன். குலீனன், s. One of a high family, &c. Wils. p. 234. KULEENA. குலோத்துங்கன், s. The respectable chief of a family. 2. The name of an illustrious prince of the Chola dynasty. குலடன், s. An adopted son, a foster child, சுவீகாரபுத்திரன். Wils. p. 233. KULAT'A. குலகிரி--குலபர்வதம்--குலாசலம், s. The eight mountains in Jambu Dwipa, (See கிரி.) 2. Seven mountain which are supposed to be in each of the seven Dwipas. 3. The circular mountains which are fancied to surround the annular seas respectively, together with the one which sorrounds the Pushkara Dwipa. (காந்.) நற்குலம், s. A good caste or tribe. 2. An excellent kind. இதுநற்குலதீவிதிராட்சச்செடி. This is a very choice vine. இவன்நற்குலத்தான்--நற்குலத்தோன். He is a man of a high caste, or family. 20)

koḷ (p. 147) --கொள்ளு, கிறேன், கொண் டேன், வேன், கொள்ள, v a. To take, receive with the hand, வாங்கிக்கொள்ள. 2. To contain, hold, comprehend, have, comprise, embrace, அடக்கிக்கொள்ள. 3. To buy, purchase, விலைக்குக்கொள்ள. 4. To accept, approve of, admit, அங்கீகரிக்க. 5. To take a wife, to marry, பெண்கொள்ள. 6. To take --as food, medicine, sleep, rest, &c., உணவு முதலியகொள்ள. 7. To conceive--as in the womb, in the mind or in the heart. 8. To get, to acquire, பெற்றுக்கொள்ள. 9. v. n. To be contained in, அடங்க. As an auxiliary to other verbs, கொள் denotes, continuation, certainly, &c., of the action, and that the fruit of it reverts to the agent-as படித்துக்கொள்ளுகிறான். He continues to study, குதிரையைவாங்கிக்கொண்டேன். I bought a horse for myself. The verb is generally found in composition with other words --as வாங்கிக்கொள்ள, பெண்கொள்ள, உட்கொள்ள, &c., and very rarely in the personal finite forms in common usage, except in the third meaning. கொள்வாருமில்லைகொடுப்பாருமில்லை.... There are none who receive, none who give. கொண்டிருந்துகுலம்பேசுகிறதா? Would it be proper to twit a family after you have taken a wife from it? கொண்டான், s. A husband, புருஷன். 2. A play as கொண்டல். See under கொண் டு, for other words. கொண்டுபோக, inf. To carry, to convey; to take away. கொள்க, [obtative.] May take, accept, or may uderstand. உமதுசித்தத்தின்படிகொள்க. You may take it as you please. கொள்கலம், s. A vessel, a salver, a dish; a receptacle for sandal-paste, or other ointments, or for ornaments, &c., சாந்துமுதலியபெய்கலம். 2. A cup of palm leaf, or bamboo to eat from, பிழர. (சது.) A beggar's dish, இரப்போர்கலம். கொள்கை, v. noun. The act of taking, getting, &c. See, கொள், v. 2. Quality, nature, habit, state, குணம். 3. Liking, fondness, regard, attachment, intimacy, சினேகம். 4. Opinions, tenets, belief, கோ ட்பாடு. 5. Knowledge, instruction, அறிவு. அவருக்குமிவருக்குமிகுந்தகொள்கை. [prov.] They two are very intimate. கிழவியிவனோடேமிகுந்தகொள்கையாயிருக்கிறாள். The old woman is very fond of him. கொள்கொம்பு, s. A prop supporting vines. (R.) கொள்வனை--கொள்வனவு--கொள்வினை, v. noun. Buying, borrowing; taking receiving வியாபாரக்கொள்ளுகை. 2. Marrying a wife, பெண்கொள்ளுகை. கொள்வனைகொடுப்பனை, v. noun. Borrowing and lending. 2. Giving and receiving in marriage. 3. [vul. loc.] Taking, receiving; buying, borrowing, கொள்ளுகை. கொள்விலை--கொள்கிரயம், s. The first or prime cost, the sum paid for a thing exclusive of profit, &c., கொண்டவிலை. 2. [prov.] Purchase, purchased land or property, விலைக்குக்கொண்டது. 3. One of the three species of real property. See சீதனம் and பிதிரார்ச்சிதம். கொள்விலைக்காணி, s. [prov.] Land attained by purchase, as distinguished from lands by dowry and inheritance. கொள்விலைக்காரன், s. The purchaser of land, &c. கொள்வோன், s. One who buys, or one who accepts any thing. 2. (நன்.) a pupil, student, learner, கற்போன். கொள்ள, [adverbially.] While, when-as நான்வரக்கொள்ள, while I was coming. 2. Since, therefore, because, as இருக்கக்கொ ள்ள, since it is so. ஆகக்கொள்ள, in the phrase நாளையவன்வருவானாகக்கொள்ள, he will come tomorrow, therefore, [tarry.] 3. (Rott.) as கொள்க in the phrase கொள் ளாதநோய்கொள்ள, may you be seized with an insupportable disease--a malediction. 4. [prov.] More, further on, in or under --as கொஞ்சங்கொள்ளவார், pour out a little more; also in கொள்ளக்கொடு, insert a lever, or land, further in, further under, &c., or let a pair of scissors or pincers take a good hold; and in கொள்ளப்பிடி, take hold further in measuring cloth. கொளல்வினா, s. [in gram.] One of the six kinds of interrogation, implying a desire to obtain the thing mentioned --as அரிசியுளதோ, have you got any rice? wishing to buy some. கொள்ளல்--கொளல், v. noun. Taking, receiving, obtaining, buying, &c. கொள்ளற்பாடு, [prov.] Estimation, worth, honor, மேன்மை. கொள்ளாதசெய்கை, s. A fragrantly wicked, unbearable act. கொள்ளாதசிறை, s. One assiduous as a slave--spoken of an affectionate, faithful wife, or a dependent. கொள்ளாதபுகழ், s. Unbounded praise. கொள்ளாமை, v. noun. (neg.) Excessiveness transcedency, pre-eminence in good or evil. 2. Disagreement, discordance, enmity, பகை. வாய்கொள்ளாப்பேச்சு. Language not proper to be used. கொள்ளார், s. Haters, enemies, பகை வர். To avenge, to revenge, பழிவாங்க. 19. To fall heavily on one, as charges, expenses, profits, &c., on goods coming upon the last buyer, சுமத்த. 2. To hobble, to limp, நெளிக்க. --Note. Most of the meanings are used in cant. மனதிலேதாக்கவில்லை. This has not reached the mind. பழையகோபமெல்லாம்வைத்துத்தாக்குகிறார். Keeping in mind all his old grudges, he is now revenging himself. சரீரத்திலேதாக்கும். It will have lasting effects of he body. செலவிலேதாக்கும். Expenses will increase 2. The expence will be heavy. நிறையத்தாக்கிவிட்டான். He is quite intoxicated; (lit.) full of liquor. 14)

pṟi (p. 303) க்கிறேன், த்தேன், ப்பேன், க்க, v. a. To pluck, to crop, to pick off with a twist, கொய்ய. 2. To weed, eradicate, பிடுங்க. 3. To snatch, twitch away, tear off, wrench, திருகிப்பறிக்க. 4. To take by force, to usurp, to grasp, to extort, to rob, to plunder, to confiscate, வலிதிற்கவர. 5. To dig out, to excavate, தோண்ட. 6. To unload, unlade, discharge, இறக்க.--Note The most common compounds are, அஸ்தி வாரம்பறிக்க, to dig for a foundation; களைபறிக்க, to weed; தேங்காய்பறிக்க, to pluck cocoa-nuts; தட்டிப்பறிக்க, to get by stratagem; பூப்பறிக்க, மலர்பறிக்க, to crop flowers; பணம்பறிக்க, to juggle away money; மண்பறிக்க, to dig out earth; வெட்டிப்பறிக்க, to root up a tree, or undermine a wall. பறித்தகாட்டுக்குப்பயமில்லை. There is nothing to fear in a jungle, where a robbery has just been committed பறிமுதல், s. Confiscated property. 2. Things plundered from a single person. பறி, v. noun. A highway-man. பறிகொடுத்தல், v. noun. Being robbed, bereaved, &c. பறிதலைச்சமணர்--பறிதலையர், s. One of the two classes of Jainas, so called because they pluck all the hair from their heads to avoid vermin and so to prevent taking away life. செடிகொள்பறிதலையமணர்.
